Private Classical Guitar Teacher

Music lessons with me are one of a kind. My experience as both a classical guitarist and an electric guitarist who has played with successful rock bands puts me in a unique position to provide a breadth and depth of skills to my students. I earned a Doctorate in music composition; this education allows me to offer a deep understanding of the music a student and I will study using music theory and music history. In short, lessons with me are not only fun and vibrant--they are also intellectually invigorating!

Private Classical Guitar Teacher

I have been playing guitar for 33 years and teaching since I was in high school. I majored in jazz guitar in college. I have taught guitar at the university and high school levels as well as privately to students from age 7 to 70. I am patient, kind and customize my lessons to various learning styles and aim to help my students stay motivated by helping them play music they really love from the beginning.
I would love to help you or your child become a better guitarist!

About Chris

I am originally from Houston, TX and began playing the guitar at the age of eight and began studying classical guitar at age ten. While studying jazz at the High School for the Visual and Performing Arts in Houston TX, I began working professionally as a guitarist, playing locally in clubs and

I am a novice guitar player who knew a few basic chords before enrolling with lessons from Chris. Since i had an elementary knowledge of playing, Chris asked some questions before we got started on what I was struggling with, and hurdles i was facing.

From there each successive lesson we attacked those weak areas of my play. I was able to get incrementally better each week from the advice and handouts he offered, overall elevating my ability to play dramatically.

Chris is a very down to earth guy - and despite being an excellent musician was not even a little pretentious in carefully explaining concepts that were basic, but that i needed to know.

Overall, Chris takes the time to very effectively communicate how you can improve your guitar skills, and if you put in the practice from his instruction - you'll see the results.

He's also a nice guy and very easy to talk to.

About Joshua

Guitar is the most amazing instrument to me. I got really lucky because someone gave me an electric when i was 12 and I just played it. I didn't even know they had to be tuned at first! Once I started playing with people I learned so much so fast. I also went to school for recording and am able

Alex is an excellent teacher! He worked at my pace and gave me a good foundation of exercises and instructions on how to build hand strength and proper posturing for playing classical guitar. He's very down to earth and makes you feel comfortable and capable throughout each lesson. My favorite songs we worked on were the duets.

David is the rare combination of a true artist who wants to help others discover their own musical voice. He is always able to find a solution to my technical problems, with the goal of helping me play more musically. He takes me seriously as a student, challenging and encouraging me with understanding, patience and kindness.

David was very knowledgeable about music and made it easy to understand. This was especially important to me since I am starting new, not having any musical background other than a love for music and a passion to play. This instructor helped me realize I have potential which is also important. After just one lesson I was able to take what he taught me and put some of his advice together musically and it is starting to make sense. I am looking forward to my future lessons!

"Jessie has taught my daughter classical and regular guitar for a couple of years. There are many, many thing I like about Jesse's teaching. One of the things that I like most is that he asks my daughter what she wants to learn and then teaches it to her. He mixes up the theory and it's application with what she wants to learn keeping interest and motivation at a high. Another thing that I like is the breadth of material he brings. His students end up well versed in all types of music and are able to play well known pieces in many different genres. Yet another thing that I like is his creditability. He walks the walk. His group plays regularly. Any doubts that your teenager may have about him can be quickly and easily put to rest just by going to hear him perform. Jesse is a good teacher and I highly recommend him."

Having moved from Barcelona Spain we were interested in continuing our daughter's classical guitar lessons. "I appreciate Diego's teaching and how he is able to catch the subtle things I am doing wrong over a web cam no less. His pedagogy sets a high standard for playing, but the lessons progress naturally and logically.

As a teacher, Diego is very patient while encouraging me and knowing when the teaching pace should pick up or slow down. This makes his teaching very efficient while ensuring strong fundamentals.

I look forward to many more years of instruction by Diego and am happy to have found such a knowledgeable and skillful maestro."

"I have been a student of Bill's for almost three years. Bill's teaching is characterized by clarity of expression, high standards, patience and an upbeat and pleasant disposition. He is always clear and direct when explaining the technical aspects of playing- no matter how complex the matter at hand. He holds you (and himself) to a high standard- no shortcuts- you learn to do it right. Yet he is so pleasant to be with that every minute of every lesson is truly enjoyable. Every time I leave I am ready to practice and can't wait to return."

Should Classical Violinists Learn to Improvise?

A few weeks ago the Washington Post published an article about musician Hannah Hanh and her struggles with improvisation.  As a classical violinist, she hadn't had much training for spontaneity, naturally. The article points out improvisation as a technique that has fallen by the wayside for many performers these days. And it asks an interesting question: Can (and should) classical musicians learn to improvise? We've talked a lot about improvising on the guitar and drums, but where do classi …
