About Jonathan
About

I am a Florida native, active doctoral student, teacher and practitioner. My career includes performing and recording as a guitarist and teaching subjects such as music or math. Grade-school academic strengths in mathematics represent my enthusiasm for the subject. The math equivalent in music can be considered music theory, which is another passion of mine. I hope to take these well-rounded characteristics to teach and influence others with what I have learned in my education and career thus far.

Education & Teaching Experience:

I am currently pursuing my Doctorate of Musical Arts from Shenandoah University and hold a Masters of Music from the University of Akron and a Bachelor of Music from Stetson University (all degrees with a guitar performance emphasis). I also have a temporary teaching certificate for Music K-12 fro
m the Florida Department of Education. I have taught in Florida as a preferred substitute for general music classes, K-12. In college, I have given study sessions for music theory levels ranging from 4-part writing to post-serialism.

Degrees:
Doctorate of Musical Arts: Guitar Performance; Shenandoah University, expected May 2019
Master of Music: Guitar Performance; University of Akron, May 2014
Bachelor of Music: Guitar Performance; Stetson University, 2011

While giving lessons:
I ensure that every student receives fundamental foundation pertaining to the subject. While learning the basics, I advise that the student organizes their lessons and materials in a way that displays progress over time. With the proper knowledge, we can treat the heart of a subject with refinement in order to grasp its purpose and reason---whether its music or math.

Why?
My students have grown with confidence through a sense of accomplishment. Success does not only affect a person's well-being but can also impact other dimensions of their lives.

I have been teaching guitar for more than 15 years.
Every student is unique. We all have different ways of learning and retaining information: by rote, from a printed score, by ear, etc... Each student is interviewed and consulted to gain an understanding of how they learn most effectively and to create customized private lessons on the guitar.
For classical guitar, there again are strict technical guidelines to achieve a beautiful tone and effective movement. To supplement my private instruction, I use different method of books and others for technical training and basic music theory as they relate to the guitar.

About Kelvin
I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I str
ongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

Kelvin is a great teacher. He understands and teaches in a way that makes sense to me. If you’ve played the Banjo you know the teacher needs a lot of patience and he does. He provides the right direction and more importantly listens to my questions. There is no doubt in my mind if you have to learn or improve your banjo skills Kelvin can help.

I have a BA in Classical Guitar Performance from The College of Mt. St. Joseph. I have studied under Robert Mercer, Richard Goering, and Joseph Fratiani.

About Jon
I have been playing guitar since the age of 9. I have studied Classical, and Jazz at CCM's Prep Dept. in middle school and throughout high school as well as rock, folk, country etc. with other local teachers. I started teaching lessons at the age of 18 in local music stores and have never stopped. While doing this I attended The College of Mount St. Joseph where I studied Classical and Jazz guitar as well as Music Ed. In addition to my 22 years of private lesson experience, I have 2 years of classroom experience teaching general music in elementary schools. I believe it is my years as a student and instructor that enable me to be an effective teacher, having had learned what worked for me as a student, and what has shown to work as a teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
I cater my lesson to the individual. I like for students to have
a structured practice routine and working knowledge of music and their instrument, but it has to be fun. I have students who learn Classical, rock, and Jazz. Each lesson is different. Some people just want to be able to play their favorite songs by a camp fire, and others want to go on to perform at Carnegie Hall. I enjoy teaching both lessons and put forth the same enthusiasm for each one. You get out of the guitar or bass what you put into it in terms of learning and practicing. The level of achievement is up to you, I will help guide you to meet your goals regardless of how large or small they are.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Spare music room: guitars, amps, bass; computer with recording software, ProTools seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have all the equipment necessary. I would like the student to have an instrument, but if not I can provide one for the lesson.

*** Specialties ***
I'm really pretty versatile. Over 18 years of teaching anywhere from 80 to 100 students a week will do that.

From beginner melodies using rest stroke to advanced chord melody players welcome.

About Marc
I teach all styles of guitar, as I have been in many different types of music situations: Soloist (Classical) Ensemble (Classical and Jazz) Lead and Rhythm (Various Rock and Roll bands) Songwriting and Recording. I am a people person that learned the guitar from many different sources. Most of my learning came from watching others and communicating with others. I like to learn about the people I am teaching so that I can better understand their needs as a musician. My education came as a practical necessity in order to get better as a teacher and performer, as well as make a living doing it. But, by no means do I preach the need to be "educated" but only to be a working, practical musician. I will surely go over the need to read music once the need becomes evident, enlighten you as to why it may be important to understand certain aspect
s of music as opposed to just "picking and grinning", IE learning only "By Ear." I do specialize in music theory, and have many students taking lessons simply for this excellent foundation for songwriting also.

I am a classically trained guitarist that performs both as a soloist and for ensemble in a wide variety of styles. I graduated in 1996 from Schoolcraft College with an Associates degree in Music performance, and then, studying under the tutelage of Brian Roberts went on to receive my Bachelor's degree in Guitar Performance with a secondary in Jazz from Wayne State University in 2004. While at Wayne State and along the way I've performed and participated in several masterclasses with renowned artists: William Kanengiser, John Holmquest, Philip Candelaria, Jason Vieaux, Scott Tennant, and Antigoni Goni. I have also completed the teacher requirements for books 1-a and 1-b for the Suzuki Guitar Institute.

Many of my classical guitar and electric guitar students have went on to study further at the collegiate level, some achieving scholarships. My most recent students are current Berklee school of music graduates now in a band called "Flight of Fire", recently opened for Bonjovi this past summer and are getting air time on local radio stations... well on their way to living the dream! …the bulk of my students become full time professional musicians.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am an extremely patient person who has been teaching for over 20 years. I am laid back so there will be no pressure. With my electric and steel string guitar students, I host a special "Jam Session" 2 - 3 times a year to which will be one of your goals to participate in. This includes playing with a drummer, bassist, singer and another guitar player (usually me) and having it recorded. This should serve as your motivation to practice. This really eliminates the need for me to pull out a "yardstick" and "smack" your hands over the knuckles when not practicing your scales as many old traditional teachers may have done!

At your first lesson I will talk with you and give you examples of music that is played with a Flat-Pick, or music that uses the Finger-Style technique. This will be an important process as it will dictate which direction you will go in as a musician and especially during our lessons.

For the most part, playing with a Flat-Pick is generally used with the electric guitar and with most mainstream styles of music like "Rock and Roll", "Blues", "Rock-a-Billy" "Funk", and playing with the Finger-Style technique is used in styles like "Classical" and "Folk." After a while, I will introduce you to the other style of playing as well, as most great guitar players use both techniques in their playing...musicians (guitarists) such as: “Jimmy Page“, “Brian Setzer”, “Stevie Ray Vaughan”, “Joe Satriani”, “Lindsey Buckingham”, “Paul McCartney”, “John Mayer”, and many, many more.

To make learning the guitar Fun, I make sure to incorporate your main interest(s) first. Whether it be learning your new favorite song(s), learning how to write a song, or just learning some basics that you can use for when sitting around the campfire. This will be intertwined with which style you choose to start with: Flat-Pick or Finger-Style.

Pending on the level that you are starting at, (beginner, intermediate, advanced) I will include tidbits of music theory that will be used in a consistent manner. These will usually be progressive, pending on your level. For example, the songs you learn will be written out in an easy to understand chart that will have the fundamental aspects of theory (IE, chords, key, and rhythm pattern) that all musicians should understand.

With Children learning with a Flat-Pick, I encourage the use of a basic guitar instruction book.
Level One (beginners) :

"Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book One" by Will Schmid.

I will also use as a substitute for Level One:
"Alfred's Basic Guitar Method" by Alfred's Publishing Co.

More advanced players who can read music already (and graduates from book one) I prefer;
"Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book Two"

With Adults, I will ask if learning to read music interests you. It is a vital part of a practicing musician, but sometimes your needs may require a more one dimensional approach as time may be of essence. Again, I learned by ear and educated myself later...so I understand the person who wants to hold off on reading right away.

Students who want to learn the Classical (Finger-Style) approach will be encouraged to purchase a beginners book that I use written by one of my first instructors/mentor. It is a very intuitive book that covers the technique in great detail yet is very easy to understand (along with my help.) I will provide means of acquiring this book at your first lesson.

Students who want to learn the Folk (Finger-Style) approach will usually start in the above book, unless your an adult who just wants to learn some basics.

At your first lesson I will also provide you with documentation that goes more in depth about the various styles of guitar as the above info is scaled down.

*** Studio Equipment ***
-Amps

-Guitars (Electric, Acoustic, Classical, Bass)

- PA (loud speakers so you can Turn it Up! When playing along)

- Pro Tools (recording gear for all needs)

- Guitar Pro and Finale (to transpose music into sheet music)

-Skype (for out of town interactivity. Can do lessons via Skype)

-Basement with plenty of seating for parents, and or observers.

I only got to take lessons from Marc for a couple of months in the summer of 2016 (I had to move away for work), but he is hands down the best music teacher I've ever encountered. **NEW STUDENT PROMOTION*--New students get their first 5 lessons for $100 or a reduced hourly rate before rates go back to $28/30-min session!* A guitarist since 1996, I have trained in classical guitar using the Christopher Parkening method, and also teach from the Suzuki method. I've taught from ages 4 to 74 on guitar in my teaching studio, which has been kicking since 2001, after earning my degree in music performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Students describe me as patient, fun, and encouraging! As your teacher, you can expect me to work with you from where you are, and with subjects and curriculum that match what you are interested in learning. **PLEASE CHECK MY AVAILABILITY BEFORE SIGNING UP FOR LESSONS, AS MY TIMES ARE QUITE LIMITED NOW** I look forward to meeting you! About Rachel
I am currently running a new student promotion! Prices displayed on profile are for the first 5 pack of lessons. Afterward, rates are as follows.:

30 minutes for $28.00
60 minutes for $56.00

Many students begin with hour lessons, then switch to 30 minute lessons once we have a good foundation and momentum, which also keeps their budget the same for lessons!

Once you are ready to take on music lessons, your life will never be the same. Music enriches our minds and lives in many ways, including expanding our expectations past what we think is possible for ourselves! I've taught hundreds of students over almost 20 years, and have loved helping my students learn to read and play, discover their own love of music, and conquer their fears of performing. I've been described by students as encouraging and fun, and my teaching style
is warm, positive, and relaxed. I have worked with many students, including some with learning disabilities, physical limitations, PTSD, and just plain ol' stage fright! I work with you to set your own goals, and I look forward to helping you reach them... It's what I love about what I do.

I began my violin studies at age 9, with my humble public school string program. I continued through high school and into college, playing and singing with auditioned district ensembles, school musicals, and chamber choirs, coming in as runner up in my high school's concerto competition, and performing twice in Carnegie Hall. I studied opera, vocal pedagogy, and passed my piano proficiency exam from the advanced class.

In 2003, I earned my violin performance degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and soon after, joined the Kansas City-based Celtic folk group, Tullamore. I have enjoyed 13 seasons with this lauded regional group, playing countless esteemed Celtic festivals across the country and embarking on five international tours of Ireland and Scotland, as well as a Caribbean cruise hosted for our fans. Our sixth international tour is scheduled for 2019 in Scotland.

In 2014, I relocated to Hampton, Virginia, where I auditioned for the Hampton Roads Philharmonic, and currently play as a first violinist.

From 2015-2018, I had the joy of fiddling and singing with Brackish Water Jamboree, an award-winning Americana band, featured on NPR's Blue Plate Special and Out of the Box series with Paul Shugrue, and host of the NorFOLK Festival.

Throughout this time, I have enjoyed teaching a full and enriching music studio of students: hosting recitals, open mics, and ensemble rehearsals, and watching students achieve goals they didn't know were even possible. I continue to teach online via Skype, Zoom, and Take Lessons Classroom, and I look forward to working with you to accomplish your own musical aspirations!

My son took lessons with Rachel mostly online and sometimes in person. She was excellent at challenging him and letting him persue his interest in music, not just a book of lessons that sound "babyish". He learned some music theory, proper technique, form, and the fundamentals for lifelong playing. Few instructors can inspire a kid to want to sit in front of a webcam but Rachel can. She is an excellent instructor for all age levels.

I have been a classical guitar student of Bill's for the past 6 months. In retirement, I have decided to take what was an "off and on" affair with the classical guitar (I'm not a beginner) and, instead, commit the necessary time and energy to truly learning the instrument. These have been my first serious classical guitar lessons. Prior to these lessons, I was entirely "self-taught" which means I created a whole bunch of bad habits for myself and was not progressing at all. Bill refers to me as a "remedial" student which I think is a perfect description of my playing. Through Bill, I have learned proper technique which, in turn, has improved my tonality and musicality with the classical guitar. Bill has identified my bad habits, broken them down, shown the proper way to overcome them and makes sure I don't "back-slide" into my bad habits again. Bill paces the lessons according to ability, not covering material that's too advanced while still ensuring that the lesson is challenging. In each lesson, Bill is positive, encouraging yet kindly critical so that I know I am making progress yet always aware of what areas I need to work on. Bill has the right "make-up" for a teacher and I am pleased, and without reservation, to give Bill a 5 star rating.

I have been a student of Bill's for almost three years. Bill's teaching is characterized by clarity of expression, high standards, patience and an upbeat and pleasant disposition. He is always clear and direct when explaining the technical aspects of playing- no matter how complex the matter at hand. He holds you (and himself) to a high standard- no shortcuts- you learn to do it right. Yet he is so pleasant to be with that every minute of every lesson is truly enjoyable. Every time I leave I am ready to practice and can't wait to return.

One of the most important duties of a competent instructor is teaching students how to practice. This is just as true for the rank beginner as it is for the advanced student, or even professional. Everyone can learn to play music and play it well if given competent instruction. Learning to play well is learning about the mind and body, and how to use it to one's potential. I have been teaching guitar professionally for over 4 years in the Atlanta area. As a recent graduate of Kennesaw State University with a degree in Jazz Guitar Performance, I have developed a deep love for music and the guitar which I thoroughly enjoy sharing with my students. I currently teach and perform, traveling across the United States with various groups performing a multitude of genres, all of which I love teaching and sharing with eager students! I was not a "natural" guitarist, so I have a great method for making guitar/music make sense so that all of my students can be successful. I look forward to working with you!

About Patrick
I am a professional guitarist, composer, and educator living in the Greater Atlanta Area. I started playing guitar while in high school at Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School. I owe a lot of my success to my time spent here as this school is consistently ranked one of the top schools in the nation.
I wasn't a "naturally gifted' musician, so if you are just starting out don't worry! I've been there and I have picked up a lot of tips and tricks along the way to help you out!
After high school, I decided to further pursue my passion for music and was accepted to Kennesaw State University as a Jazz Performance Major. Shortly after arriving in Kennesaw I began performing all over Atlanta as a sideman in various groups and even started a few groups of my own. I have had some great opportunities to tour and travel across the United States playing
music, it is a really great feeling.I was a recipient of the GA Music Hall of Fame Talent Award in 2014 where I performed on national television for the first time. In 2016 I recorded an album with a good friend of mine, Morgan Guerin, entitled "The Saga" which reached #3 on the iTunes Jazz Charts on the first day of its release.

I have recently graduated from KSU with my Jazz Degree and have been teaching and performing extensively. Teaching has been a very rewarding part of my life, it has given me the opportunity to learn and grow as a musician in ways that performing simply cannot compete with. I really look forward to working with you and being a part of your musical journey!

Hello There!

My teaching method molds to the necessities and interests of my students, but in general lessons have a theory section followed up by a practice lesson.

At the end of the day my main goal is to teach you how to play what you want to play, providing you with the knowledge you'll need to advance on your own time. Always in a fun, dynamic way.

About Marco
Are we ready to rock?

Hello there!

My name is Marco, I'm an international musician and producer engineer with more than 10 years of experience playing guitar and a degree in Music Production from the University of New Haven.

My guitar students can expect to see improvement in their technique and musical affinities starting lesson one. I always like to prepare my lessons according to my student's interest, since everybody is different there is more than one method to learn how to play an instrument.

I also welcome those who wish to become proficient in the craft of music production, or even take your first steps in this amazing art form. I can teach you the fundamentals of recording and producing your own music, as well as insight to "tips and tricks" the pros use.

Finally and most importantly, my relationship with students
will be a two way street so I can learn from you guys as much as you do from me.

DISCLAIMER!

Having fun is a must! after all we are talking music here

The lesson Marco is doing is a joint lesson with me and my brother, Glenn. Marco was very thorough in the time we had to give us some great begginner information, and some homework to practice later. He also worked with us through technical difficulties, and provided us with reference materials and homework, and made sure we knew we could ask questions later while practicing on our own.
We learned the anatomy of a guitar, tricks on how to tune it, how to hold a pick, how to strum, the order of strings on a guitar, and the types of notes.
Our homework was a simple exercise to learn how to strum individual strings with a pick, and keep time.

Wow! You're lucky if you came across Marcos TakeLessons page. Marco knows absolutely everything about protools, and he is skilled at communicating his knowledge! He also has a music theory and audio recording background so he can speak to those areas as well, as an added bonus. You can't go wrong with Marco, he is a font of knowledge and he loves to share it.

I am a classical trained, professional level classical guitarist with experience teaching all ages and levels. We can learn the theory behind your original compositions, how to improvise on your favorite tunes, or we can make you the next great classical guitarist!

About Emma
Hello aspiring guitarists!

My name is Emma, I'm a classical guitarist with a huge variety of teaching experience. I trained at the Ithaca College Conservatory of Music, worked for many years at the Guitar Foundation of America, and have taught privately since 2010 (first on flute, but that was a while ago!). I've taught children ages 5 and up, adult amateurs, flamenco enthusiasts, song writers, rockers and more. I want to work with you to achieve your musical goals - not mine. I will meet you or your child where they are and we will make guitar lessons an engaging, inspiring and educational process. Feel free to ask me any questions about myself or my teaching style - I look forward to meeting you!

When I hit '5 stars' it inserted 'best instructor ever' -- and I would have to agree!

Emma came to our home to teach my two young sons guitar, and was amazing! She was patient, systematic, and well-prepared. With young children it is hard to maintain their focus, but they did great with her! I speak from experience, because we went through 3 guitar teachers before finding Emma. She truly was the best ever, and it was a sad day when she moved away from us. I encourage anyone to pursue lessons with her -- and can personally vouch for her ability with children!

Emma is everything I could ask for in a guitar teacher. She is patient yet has discipline in my practice. She is always very encouraging and is a very clear instructor making everything super easy to understand. Emma takes you through the basics and helps you work your way up at your own pace. I would highly recommended her to anyone who is interested in learning classical guitar!
