Private Harp Teacher

The harp is my favorite instrument. I currently offer lessons from beginner to intermediate levels. My method of teaching harp is unique because I teach both learning styles of "right-brained" (intuitive, creative, expressive, and improvising) with the "left-brained" style of logic, order, organization, theory, structure, and sight-reading.

You will learn proper technique, grace, and expression, as well as the ability to flow with the music, or let the music play "through" you. For this, there are different patterns which are learned in the left hand while the right hand improvises melodies. You will learn how to embody music and carry it through your instrument.

In addition, I can also teach about therapeutic music according to the ancient "modes" of music and their effects on our different emotional states. In this way, you can help to comfort others (and yourself) through your harp playing--making practicing a fun and enjoyable activity!

Each lesson utilizes both ...

The harp has honestly taught me so many valuable lessons and I would not be the same person without it. I highly recommend it because it is a glorious instrument that will change your life. You will learn technique, theory, dynamics, and different styles of playing the harp. Anyone can play the harp regardless of age. I would say a lesson with me is encouraging, yet challenging. I would you to fall in love with the harp, just as much as I am in love with it and I also want you to feel as though you are being stretched. Happy harping!

About Lauren

Hello, my name is Lauren and I am a harpist living in Oxnard, California. I first fell in love with the harp when I was five years old. I attended a wedding in Minnesota where I saw a beautiful pedal harp and immediately took an affinity to the instrument. It took my mom and I three years to find

Lauren is getting me started with harp basics. I was using a cell phone with zoom and it really would be much better if I used the laptop. Lauren is very encouraging and it'll be tedious until I learn the hand and finger positions very well.

Lauren has taught my then 5 year old harp. She was very patient, kind, and encouraging. I highly recommend her as a teacher. She taught my daughter not only harp, but some piano as well. She made the lessons fun and interactive. My daughter looked forward to her lessons and was even motivated to practice!

If you have an opportunity to study harp with Catherine, jump at the chance and count yourself fortunate! I have taken lessons with Catherine for over 10 years and she has guided me from a relative newcomer to the harp all the way into my professional career (playing for symphonies, opera, ballet, concerts, etc..). Catherine shares her vast knowledge and beautiful musical artistry in the most patient, kind and nurturing way I can imagine. It's a joy and an inspiration to study with Catherine and I always eagerly look forward to any time spent working with her!

I have known Mrs Cathy for over 8 years. She has always been very understanding and you can see how much she loves the harp. Our lessons are productive and challenging, but Mrs Cathy still makes it fun! I look forward to our lessons and feel like I’m learning a lot.
Angelle
Cathy is a gifted musician and an excellent teacher. For me, an adult student with a limited background in music, taking lessons with Cathy (both online and in person) has been the perfect fit. She is patient, makes lessons fun and interesting, understands my musical interests, and helps me find music that I enjoy playing. She has taught me not only technique but also some music theory, which has been very helpful. I am so pleased with my progress. Also, when I first started lessons, I had so many questions about caring for my harp. Cathy taught me how to tune my harp properly, transport it, and even change strings. She also taught me how to position myself properly when playing. Cathy is a wonderful resource for all things related to harps. I highly recommend her as a teacher.

In general, Great experience with Cindy! She is the best harpist and great instructor!
I feel lucky that I find Cindy on TakeLessons as first harp teacher, she really knows how to level you up based on your situation, no matter how much knowledge you know about harp or music and what kind of equipment you have at home, she will totally work things out with you. Don’t worry about the remote classroom when learning an instrument, Cindy can change your mind and make lessons functional and fun. Already looking forward to my next lesson this weekend. :)
