Songwriting can include many skills. The main one being to extensively learn music theory to write out charts in order to compose (and express) your musical ideas. Some writer particularly focus on lyric writing, while others use computer tracking or scoring to help them compose. Having written many songs myself (and studied various styles and methods of music) I am pleased to assist you in this area of musicianship.

About Lauren

I am a graduate of The University of The arts with a BA in music performance. The University of The Arts has allowed me to gain a reputable amount of performance and educational work. In my training at the University was able to concentrate on many styles of performance such as classical technique as well as Broadway and jazz. With that in mind, it is also important to stay current on today’s music as well. Music has allowed me to travel the world with various groups and perform with musicals greats like the Philly Pops, bassist Gerald Veasly and the great Bernard “Pretty “ Purdie.
I have taught voice and piano for high school students entering college for music. My experience in teaching is not only with high school students but spans all ages. After completing college I continued my training with Mrs. Jackie’s Piano Fun Class for

ages 4-6. This gave me confidence to complete training for The Music Class and various other infant and toddlers music programs. Currently I have many adult students, some learning for performance reasons and others to just have fun with playing. One of my theory’s behind music training is “you must love the music you play”. It may be something new but always something for you.

*** Lesson Details ***
Motivation and commitment are important in my lessons. I believe with these two things and proper encouragement for your teacher every student is a winner! I like to start my lesson by assessing what skills and goals each student has or would like to reach for within their lesson. It also important to talk about you expectations for me as the teacher and what tools you will need going forward. (Music books, songs, tape recording etc…). I lessons to be enjoyable but also productive. I use lots of games and techniques to help each student learn

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano and microphone

*** Travel Equipment ***
keyboard

*** Specialties ***
My style comes from university training and personal experience. I have performed with many different ensembles as well as performance groups. Particularly I specialize in the classic style of jazz and scat singing. Other aspect of my teaching include classical operatic voice training as a vocal bases for any style of music.

Lauren was very skillful at what she does and this conveys well in the lessons with her. I learned a lot from Lauren in my time with her but I would prefer the lessons to be a little more organized. All in all a good experience, Thank you Lauren.

Lauren is the real deal. Point blank period. I initially signed up for singing lessons, but she has helped me with piano, music theory, and other skills as well. She has a much more wholesome approach for developing as an artist than simply a linear "sing these notes" type of lesson.

Lauren is a good balance of stern and silly. She has a great sense of humor, so I feel comfortable singing & playing for her (even if my skills are limited and sound like a dying horse). However, that doesn't mean you just goof around. She takes it very seriously and pushes you as a student. I couldn't recommend Lauren more.

Five stars.

About Benjamin

I grew up in Glenside moved to Pittsburgh for school and came back because I love it here...I've been playing for 17 years and have a smorgasbord of influences from Zeppelin to the Beatles to Phish to Radiohead to the dirty projectors to Jay Z to Kurt Rosenwinkel & John Scofield. I have been composing and working with original bands for some 11 years and play regularly in the city and up and down the east coast. I have also been teaching for the past 11 years all over the Philadelphia area. i teach from a method I derived myself from years of learning both in and out of school. I think teaching music is both aural as well as visual and encourage students to listen to music a lot. most of all i feel that music is fun and the students should enjoy learning so i incorporate their favorite artists and favorite songs into our studies. for seri

ous students I love theory and love sharing what I've discovered over the years.

I'm a very laid back guy but I take my playing seriously. music is my life and there's nothing I enjoy sharing and expressing more. I learned to love playing guitar when I was 12 from the coolest guitar teacher ever. he had a vibe that i gravitated toward and encouraged me in just the right ways to get me believing in myself. I try to encourage my students the same way. music should be fun above all and sculpt my lessons to each students individual needs so that they are better equipped to succeed.

Private Songwriting Teacher
About Daniel

Music has been my passion for my entire life. I have over 20 years of experience playing guitar, and other instruments on tour and in the recording studio. I have a degree in music and audio and music production. I believe that music should be fun to make the most of it. I can get you to wherever YOU want to get to. You choose your goals, I know I can get you there, and have fun while getting there.

*** Lesson Details ***
In learning any instrument there are 3 key areas that I believe are the keys to success. Keeping the interest, patience, and repetition. My method of teaching is usually to start with the basics. Slow everything down until it becomes second nature and build, build, build. With the right exercises, and the right way to think about the instrument, letting muscle memory do what it does best, you will notice imp

rovement quick. Above all, I make sure enthusiasm is never lost because without it, there is no point. I make the lessons fun and laid back, but always take my job seriously.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect them to provide their own instruments. I can bring an extra guitar for lessons but it is extremely encouraged to have an instrument to practice on.

*** Specialties ***
Although I specialize in rock instrumentation and song writing, I also have the knowledge of classical music theory and jazz. As far as rock music goes, I have plenty of experience in blues based rock and jazz based rock with a very wide catalog of styles under my belt.

Dr. Desmond was a really great instructor! He was very kind and patient with me, he was able to teach me at ability level. He encouraged me to believe in myself and to practice in order to become a better player. He made me feel comfortable and and gave be positive reinforcements when I was doing well as well as positive constructive criticism when I was slacking. I look forward to continuing my courses with Dr. Desmond, I would recommend him to any one interested in learning how to play any instrument.

About Michael

Michael C. was eleven years old when he began to play the electric bass guitar. He decided to get an electric bass because it was the one instrument needed to start a band among his friends. In addition to playing the electric bass, Michael enjoyed time practicing on the guitar and piano in high school. Transferring the knowledge and finger technique to the guitar came easy because of the similarities between guitar and the bass. And growing up with an upright piano in the house always lead to tinkering and eventually became a proficiency after college. In 1996 Michael enrolled at the the Philadelphia University of the Arts. He was awarded a presidential merit scholarship and a university grant based on his entrance audition. During his studies Michael was recruited for a student ensemble also know as Metagroove. During this time Michael

had shared stages with guitarist John Scofield, Singer Ike Willis (Frank Zappa Band), Medeski Martin and Wood and The Disco Biscuits among countless others.

Michael has completed a Master of Arts in music education as well as Bachelor of Music in bass performance. Michael is qualified to teach on bass, upright bass, guitar, drums, piano, voice and a rare instrument called steel pan (steel drum) among others. Michael performs as a freelance musician. Among these styles are Pop, R & B, Blues, Hip Hop, Jazz, Calypso, Flamenco, Latin, Pop, Musical Theater and Rock & Roll.

Michael is a trained professional and prefers to cater his lessons to the individual need of each student. He believes that each student is unique and will encounter challenges in their own manner. Michael likes to supplement his lessons using musical interests of the student. C. has been known to arrange popular pieces for recital performances for his students. Some of the pieces he has arranged for his students include Something in the Way She Moves (Beetles), Long distance Run Around (The Who), Iron Man (Black Sabbath), That' €™s What Makes You Beautiful (One Direction), Hall of Fame (The Script) among many more. Michael encourages his students to use the music they love to challenge their ability and cognitive processes. Michael has the experience and training required to inspire and motivate you to become successful not only in music but in your daily endeavors.

Many students are satisfied learning covers, which is great, but the real fun and creativity is in writing your own music. Writing takes confidence and freedom and everyone has to start somewhere. I help new writers with laying down basic songs, and more advanced writers with nuance and innovation - how to borrow ideas from songs they love, use music theory to create harmony for lead melodies on guitar, piano, and voice

I also offer music recording on Garageband, guiding writers on how to select a beat, add tracks, and connect musical ideas. I've been writing and recording my music since 2004, which stretches from Pop and Country to Soul and Hard Rock. I share my process and allow writers to explore the process of artists they love to see the progression even the greatest artists go through.

About Adam

Learn to play your favorite songs, sing while playing, or even write your own songs!

I have been passionate about music all of my life. I have been teaching guitar and piano for 10 years. I'm a doctoral student at Chestnut Hill College pursuing a degree in clinical psychology with plans to become a music therapist. I learned guitar and classical piano under 2 private teachers while pursuing my Psychology degree and music minor at Rutgers University in NJ.

Music was a way for me to find peace, structure, confidence, and an outlet for personal expression and creativity outside of my everyday life. I've grown as a person and a musician through music. I get excited when I see my students learn enjoy playing something new. I love music more than anything else and that love is something I try to bring out in my students. Once there is l

ove for music, everything grows naturally. I teach to help my students find those strengths in themselves to live a fulfilling life through their instrument.

I took acoustic guitar lessons with Adam and he was a wonderful teacher. I had little knowledge of the guitar and felt I developed my skills quickly. Adam was patient, nice and came up with fun exercises and song selections. Would highly recommend Adam as a teacher!

Adam’s superpowers as a guitar teacher are commitment and a calm demeanor. It was clear from my first lesson that Adam was singularly dedicated to my advancement even at times when my dedication wavered. I was able to successfully learn a Death Can for Cutie song that I had loved for years (I will follow you into the dark). Though i had taken lessons in the past, i felt i had the most chemistry with Adam’s thoughtful approach to teaching guitar. Our lessons were fun and laced with lighthearted humor. I moved to NYC and Adam was 100% committed to ensuring our lessons continued via Skype. Unfortunately the move was a big life change that refocused my priorities. I wish that Adam lived in NY so we could continue playing together!

10 Proven Steps For Writing Lyrics That Stick

By Suzy S.

The late Amy Winehouse tribute album Lioness: Hidden Treasures has been making waves on the UK music charts, securing the #1 spot just days after its release.  Although the posthumous album has had its share of drama and questionable reviews, the collection - with its mix of covers and raw, unfinished tunes polished up by the producers - seems fitting in depicting Amy as the troubled, tattered star that she was. As she sings at the start of "Best Friends, Right?": "I can't wait to get away f …
