This teacher did not pay close attention as I explained by goals, which resulted in a lesson that was not aligned with my goals for drumming. I would recommend searching for a different teacher if you have specific goals. This teacher either did not understand what I was explaining or not able to translate make goals into specific practice routines.

I took lessons with Aya when I was in high school 13 years ago. She was very inspiring and because of her I decided to major in Music. I’m currently finishing my doctorate in Music and I am much indebted to her for exposing me to such a high level of artistry and instilling me with so much confidence at such a young age. I have very fond memories of Aya’s wonderful teaching.

Drum lessons are taught one-on-one and from a beginner level to an advanced level. Ages of students start at 6-years-old and up. I have many adult students as well. It's never too late to start a new instrument.

About Rob
I have over 18 years of professional teaching experience on drum set, snare drum and percussion (timpani, two- & four-mallets, accessory percussion and hand drums), guitar, piano, electric bass and ukulele. I have been playing music since the age of two.

Some of my most noteworthy performances have included Late Show with David Letterman (Justin Townes Earle and Allison Moorer), Tonight Show with Jay Leno (Allison Moorer), Levon Helm'™s Midnight Ramble (Allison Moorer), The Conan O'™Brien Show (Julia Nunes) and Budokan in Tokyo, Japan (Jim Campilongo Trio).

My Bachelor of Music is from Capital University where I studied with three great teachers:
Robert Breithaupt - Classical percussion and jazz drum set
Jim Ed Cobbs - Drum set, tabla and frame drums
Eric Paton - Taiko, samba, Afro-Cuban drums

*** Lesson Details ***
I treat
each student individually, catering to specific goals and needs that we will decide upon and plan together. Some students want to seriously study a craft. Others want a hobby that will be fun and interesting. I have had success teaching to both, and will impart basic fundamentals and musicianship to all types of students.

I see my primary job as keeping the student inspired, intellectually fed and sprinting in the right direction. The student's job is to do the work. Daily practice is essential to move forward in any craft.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My Brooklyn studio is a dedicated music space with two drum sets, PA, amplifiers and recording capabilities.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide books, a drum pad, sticks or mallets, an iPod with two sets of headphones, and a metronome. Additionally, I can bring small hand drums, special instruments and percussion that might be needed for specialty lessons. I expect students to have some sort of pad or drum to practice on at home; a full drum set is not necessary.

*** Specialties ***
Drum set (rock, jazz, R&B, folk, pop, electro, Afro-Cuban)
Snare drum
Timpani
Two- and four-mallets (marimba, vibraphone, xylophone)
Accessory percussion

Rob was an awesome teacher and even better guy. The lesson environment was comfortable, but always focused and professional. I am an adult learner with substantial time commitments, so things do not come to me as easy as they do for younger people. Mr. Blackwell totally understands this and uses a teaching method, that while challenging, it is not overwhelming. He also covers all the bases like sight reading, theory and improvisation, as well as a broad array is different styles of music. I really enjoy my lessons and my playing has greatly improved.

I teach the foundational concepts needed to benefit the most from playing the drums, whatever your goals might be. I use a lingual approach in order to empower students to excel in any musical situation.

My teaching approach is designed to lend the student control and expressive ability on the instrument. Rather than teaching specific beats and licks to regurgitate, I help lay a rhythmic and technical foundation that will enable you to play whatever you hear, efficiently. That way, your taste and personality will inform your drumming, rather than the technical hurdles of playing the drums.

Learning a relaxed technique is extremely important to provide a solid foundation for self-expression and to prevent potential injuries later on. I also expose students to many different styles of music, because diversity makes students’ playing more creative and opens their mind to other cultures and musical traditions.

I base my lessons around recordings of mine and the student’s ...

About Jack
Hi! I’m glad you’re interested in taking drum lessons. I’m all about making learning to play fun. I’ve found that encouraging the student’s interest and enjoyment of music-making is the most important contributor to progress.

In the first lesson, it’s most important for us to communicate about what your goals are with the drum set. Whether you want to play in your local church, school, or even just play along to your favorite records, my job is to help you obtain the skills you need to make it happen and have a lot of fun in the process.

I tailor each lesson to each individual student – a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t usually work because each student has different strengths, weaknesses, and goals.

I welcome students of all ages and skill levels, even complete beginners!

I have a Bachelor’s degree in music from the Univ
ersity of Miami. I’ve studied the drum set formally for many years, and have spent thousands of hours rigorously studying and practicing many styles of music – everything from hip-hop, to jazz, to samba. I have also been performing professionally since I was a teenager and frequently perform locally in mine and others’ groups.

I'd stopped and started lessons a few times in the past, but never really found a teacher who clicked- until now. Jack has made learning the drums seem fun and approachable. He's great at helping me divide practice into bite sized, simple tasks to work on, and has helped me to build the confidence I needed to keep going with it. I can break down the fundamentals of drumming and show you how to construct simple to complex beats that will fit any musical opportunity thrown your way!

About Adrian
A great teacher or mentor or even friend can help shape one's life. I have had the great privilege to have been taught by some of the best and brightest musicians around the world and know first hand how mentors can awe one with infinite possibilities and opportunities that await in the world of sound. I only aim to give back some of this magic, and keep this wonder alive and spreading among everyone.

I have been playing guitar since I was 11 years old, producing music since I was 12 years old and have been actively involved in the recording and live music scenes of Las Vegas since the age of 14. I attended the Las Vegas Academy as a Guitar Major and recently graduated with my Associates of Business degree from CSN. I'm now 20 years old, and although that may seem young, I have a wealth of experience and knowledge that I would absolut
ely love to share with you. I can teach anything from guitar, bass, vocals, drums, some beginner piano, music theory, production and so much more.

To learn something, you must become obsessed with the craft- I've been obsessed with this craft since before my mind could even conceive what I was hearing! What better way to learn is there than to jump straight into the madness with someone (yours truly) who is already obsessed and constantly learning new things about all music and sounds?!

Let me help you realize and actualize the musical potential that you never knew you had!

As an educator, I strive to provide my students with the tools that they will need to explore the direction that they want to take with their instrument. This can include from enjoying drumming as a hobby, performing in small jazz ensembles, recording electronic and acoustic drums in major recording studios, to performing with a full orchestra!
