TakeLessons.com Instructor since 2005, Jason M. is now available for online lessons worldwide featuring multiple-camera angles and a share screen experience leaving no stone un-turned!
Jason has been playing guitar for over 15 years and teaching music since 1996. Although trained in standard teaching methods, he has developed his own method of teaching to positively enhance the students strength, dexterity, ear-training, memorization and techniques. His goal as a teacher is specifically designed to help you achieve your goals as an artist and a musician.
This year Jason was also the Music Director at the National Guitar Workshop Day Jams Rock Music Day Camp where students ages 7-15 came out to form bands, record original material and master their craft. He also taught beginning to advanced guitar/ vocals/ performance and songwri
ting as hosted a recording clinic at the end of each day.
Jason has host student showcases/charity benefits where his students were able to get on stage and show off their new talent and perform with other musicians. It wasn't mandatory though, if you were just looking to come out and support there was no pressure other than to come out and have fun.
Jason has been transcribing for guitar and bass since the age of 18 and since then has become a master of the craft including both 5 line staff and tablature, hand-crafted exercises and deconstructions to better enhance the students learning. Artists and genres that Jason has experience with range from Classic Rock, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Guns N' Roses, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Robert Johnson, Pierce the Veil, Paramore, All Time Low, Demi Lava to, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold, The White Stripes, Green Day, Old Crow Medicine Show, Taylor Swift, Mumford and Sons, Bruno Mars, Rob Zombie, John 5, Audioslave, Rage Against the Machine, Van Morrison, the Beatles, AC/DC, ZZ-Top, Bullet For My Valentine, All That Remains, Ozzy, Black Label Society, Sublime, Aerosmith, At the Drive In, Type O Negative, the Black Keys, the Pixies, the Toadies, Black Sabbath, Jason Mraz, Lady GaGa, John Mayer and Journey.
Jason attended the University of Alaska, Anchorage where his degree is in Music and Business. He is constantly continuing his education with music theory courses as well as private guitar instruction. He attends guitar workshops and seminars by artists such as John5 and Kerry King who are known as some of the worlds finest guitar players. He reviews every day from a wide range of over 1000 sources working to become a better musician and instructor.
Another nice feature that you might enjoy from one on one sessions with Jason is learning the ability to craft and record your own songs using state of the art technology that caters to your own unique personality. There are no limits!
Jason teaches all experience levels from beginner to intermediate and advanced as well as artists that are signed to labels.
Local news outlet Fox 5 did a segment with one of his students who overcame issues with ADD and depression as a result of taking guitar lessons.
His students advance quickly, some have released albums, been in Guitar World Magazine as well as its online companion and won awards for their music websites.
*** Lesson Details *** Lessons are scheduled to best fit to the student's schedule when possible. Students receive complimentary audio lessons and transcriptions of songs upon their first or second session. Jason is a very patient instructor and understands that students learn at a different pace, after all everyone is an individual.
Jason was very patient with me and very nice. I loved what I've learned so far and can't wait to learn more!

Great lesson. Jason is working with my mom to tailor the lessons to her level. Mom enjoyed the lesson and is looking forward to more.

We feel that we totally lucked out with finding Jason who is a complete gem! He showed up on time and quickly inspired my son with the drawing lessons by having him draw Superheroes! So my son is having a great time with Jason who has a great way of giving feedback and steering Cody using a balance of instructions and positive feedback. Cody is definitely enjoying his lessons and I am seeing real progress. I feel like I did the right thing investing in these lessons and giving Cody a great summer with a wonderful instructor. I couldn't have asked for more. Thank you Jason for being so great at what you do!
Beginners Learn to find the notes on your instrument and read simple pieces, as well as all the theory to back up all concepts. Explore the basic methods of fretting and finger picking. Play simple pieces primarily in first position in major keys.
Intermediate Expand upon your theory to include all three types of minor keys (natural, harmonic, and melodic). Start to traverse the neck in pieces.
Advanced Start to apply prior concepts to arrangement and improvisation. Take music off the page, and begin to live it.
*Disclaimer* I'm currently not taking beginner students on voice/singing, guitar, bass, drums, piano, and ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Melissa though. Please check out her profile:
I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.
Philosophy of Learning
Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. It's really important to know though that everyone makes their own experience. The process of learning music involves you learning as much about your own mind and body as it does any external concepts, so please keep in mind only you can move yourself forward.
I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.
I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!) Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.
Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype. (*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)
*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
My studio is equipped with:
*A P.A. System
*Vocal and instrument microphones
*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc
*Two guitar amps and a bass amp
*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set
*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set
*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ
*A MicroKorg Synthesizer
*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute
*An extensive physical and virtual music library
*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to
*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype
Jesse has given directions on how to successfully become a better musician. His approach and explanation on musical theories was much more understandable than what I was previously reading. Overall, I found the lessons to be very usefull.
June 28, 2019
Super kind, patient and teaches a lot in each session!
March 25, 2019
Jesse is very friendly and a fun teacher to be around.
I have been playing guitar since I was 10 and loving music my whole life. I have been in numerous rock bands, the high-school jazz band, classical guitar duos, trios, chamber ensembles, and even played mandolin in a bluegrass band. I received my Bachelor of Music at Guilford College as a student of Kami Rowan. During my third year of study there, I was nominated for the Guilford College Art Award as the outstanding student and performer in the music department. In February of 2010, I had the honor of being a member of the guitar orchestra during a performance of Shingo Fuji’s Concierto de los Angeles, alongside soloist, William Kanengiser. I recently completed my Master of Music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music where I studied with Grammy winning guitarist, Jason Vieaux. There I was awarded the Rosalia Ablan Memorial Prize for m
y accomplishments on the guitar. In addition to guitar performance, I have studied music theory, jazz theory, and pedagogy. I am a native of San Francisco and have been teaching privately since 2007. No matter what a student's interests are, I can give them a rock solid foundation in technique, performance, reading, and theory.
*** Lesson Details *** In my lessons I make it a priority to create an easy-going, non-intimidating environment, so that you, the student, can focus on your goals and learning, approach music at your own pace, and really look forward to coming in to lessons. Whether you are interested in electric, steel-string, or classical, Metallica, Mozart, or anything in between, I can teach you technique, musicianship skills, and songs that fit your personal interests. For beginning students I like to teach a mixture of basic theory, music-reading, and chords/scales. Soon after, the student can begin to bring in songs that s/he is interested in, and I can start to build lessons around specific styles/pieces. I teach all levels and all ages, and I would love to share my passion and knowledge with you, and gain you skill and confidence on the guitar, as well as a deep understanding of music.
*** Studio Equipment *** Living room w/ seating for parents
*** Specialties *** I specialize in classical guitar, and am very familiar with the teachings of Aaron Shearer. His methods and practices provide the basis for how I teach technique and how i approach learning pieces. I also supplement his ideas with those of Pepe Romero, William Kanengiser, and Scott Tenant (particularly their views on the right-hand). I also love teaching pop/rock guitar on steel-string or electric, and TAB-ing/teaching songs the student brings in. I use Troy Grady's method for developing right-hand picking/string-crossing technique. Whether the student prefers classical or popular s/he will get a great foundation in technique, music theory and music reading.
An Excellent instructor! He has lot of patience specially with beginners. He is very knowledgeable in regards to music/ guitar. He is so kind to share his expertise with you.He is easy going and he show enthusiasm in what he does which invite you to keep going in you guitar journey. His studio is a peaceful, welcoming and inviting environment to play your guitar. He’s open in whatever music you feel comfortable to play with. He adapted to your needs and he knows how far you can go. He is an expert in what he does! You’re the best Aidan! I highly recommend him! Thank you so much for all your patience, enthusiasm and support!

Aidan is such a patient and awesome teacher. His in-depth knowledge is what helps me learn how to play the guitar. Aidan has also taken in consideration the type of music I want to learn and has catered his lessons towards it. I’m so glad I have Aidan teaching me!
I started playing guitar in the 5th grade and in middle school began playing in rock groups. At the beginning of high school, I started teaching in some of the local music stores in the area. While wanting more from my playing, I started classical guitar lessons with an Andre Segovia student, Rani Cochran, and soon started lessons from Warren Nunes, a top jazz guitarist in the Bay Area. While continuing to take lessons in both types of music, I majored in Music at the local college. There I played in the jazz band and in guitar ensembles. After receiving my A.A. degree, I took classical guitar lessons with Larry Ferrara at the Conservatory of Music in San Francisco. At this point I transferred to San Jose State University and received a B.A. in guitar performance and a B.A. in Psychology, graduating with honors. My latest performing exp
erience has been playing in the worship band at my church for the past several years. I enjoy teaching guitar and sharing what I’ve learned over the years of playing. We all never stop being students and learning new things on our instrument.
*** Lesson Details *** Lessons are provided in a comfortable, fun environment and are private and on a weekly basis. Initially the student will complete a questionnaire before the first lesson to allow me to better understand what experiences the student has had with the guitar and with music in general. Additionally, I try to find out what groups and guitarists he or she likes. Finally, discuss what goals the student has or put another way, what he or she wants to do with the guitar. When we have completed the first lesson, I will better understand what the student’s playing level is and be able to provide a lesson plan based on that level and current experience. The lessons are tailored to each student’s capability and desire to play/practice. The lessons will be challenging but not “out of reach”. The student will feel successful and see the difference in playing within a relatively short time.
I will assess the student’s progress each week, by reviewing the previous week’s work. Based on the student’s progress, I will advance to new material or stay within the same material. The student and I will agree on how much time the student will devote to practicing each week. The student will keep a three ring notebook for adding handouts as they are given. I usually use a guitar book, to have structure, along with supplementary material that fills in the gaps. It is vital to practice on a regular basis in order to improve. I provide teaching with patience and motivation. Being a parent of a child with ADHD (I homeschooled for one year), I incorporate learning from my parental experiences into lessons as needed. There have been several studies done that show how early music lessons have longtime benefits.
*** Studio Equipment *** The studio lessons are taught in a music room upstairs with large windows facing the street with guitars, amps, a computer, stereo and seating. The house has 3 cats which are kept separate from lessons. Street parking and/or driveway if needed.
*** Specialties *** I've taught rock, blues, jazz, classical, contemporary Christian, and music theory. I try to get my students to play along with CD's and listen to others playing what they want to learn. I draw material from the hundreds of books I have collected over the years.
Through a combination of standard textbooks ("Pumping Nylon" by Scott Tennant, "The Christopher Parkening Guitar Method", and other graded classical studies), we will explore the basics of classical guitar method with a strong emphasis on technique and form. After the beginner level, the student will progress through different eras of music and explore different compositional styles.
Extensive musical training, including thirteen years of jazz and classical guitar performance and theory, coupled with real-life experience as a studio and touring guitarist offers me a unique approach to music instruction focused on your individual goals and needs.
*** Lesson Details *** While I do have a general method for education, the priority is always on what the student wants to learn. If you have specific subject material you would like to explore, contact me, I'll certainly help you out in any way I can!
*** Studio Equipment ***
Depending on the situation, I can bring some of my recording and performance gear to lessons for demonstrations and exercises, including:
-Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier -Gibson Les Paul Standard -Carvin DC400 Custom Build -Music Man JP12 seven string -A whole host of other amplifiers, mando
lins, acoustics, classicals, and folk instruments -Home studio equipped with Pro Tools 11 and Logic Pro X for recording
*** Travel Equipment *** I bring with me basic gear for teaching (not much more than sheet music and a guitar), but I can not leave gear with students. If a student had questions about specific types of gear I may have, including effects processors and amplifiers, and would like a hands-on learning approach, they can contact me in advance and I can demo the equipment for them.
*** Specialties *** Music: - I have been working recently as a touring musician and recording artist for rock and metal bands for the past few years. If you need assistance with breaking through stage fright, I can help your live presence dramatically. Check out my band, Love District!
- Folk stringed instruments and odd tunings. - Sight Reading, both classical compositions and big band charts. - Improvisational techniques. - Theory and Songwriting. - Recording techniques.
Anthony starts from where you are with your skills and opens doors for your improvement.
May 9, 2017
I am to restarting an activity that I once enjoyed years ago. Anthony is the perfect instructor for this re-start: His style of teaching is positive and patient and his approach, with me at least, is focused on my stated desires of incorporating new runs, fingerings and a more melodic approach to my playing guitar: to rely more on the guitar and less on the voice. I look forward to practicing and to the sessions themselves since I started to see the improvement immediately.
Why these lessons are different: - Formally trained conductor/composer/producer - Individual or group session options including full band production - A long roster of satisfied clients - Broad base of musical styles (rock, classical, jazz, blues, metal, bluegrass, folk, theater, big band, symphonic, pop, punk, country, march, gospel, avant-garde...) - Over 20 yrs teaching experience and work with recognized professionals including work in some of the top-rated private schools in the United States - Over 30 years performing experience
My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to
) the Classical approach to Western tonal harmony and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Whatever level they are at when I start with them, I guide their efforts into bringing the students up to a certain level of comprehension regarding the mathematical aspects of music and how it relates to their instruments. This understanding of theoretical principles of sound allows the students to play any style of music they wish, no matter how their tastes may change throughout their lives.

Darrell helped me a lot to get a handle on my Ableton rig. I needed to set up midi tracks, locate presets to create cool sounds from plugins. Then I needed to export the audio of a couple of those tracks to import into a separate Pro Tools project. Lot of progress, thanks Darrell! -- Frank S

I find a student's strengths and weaknesses using various ways to encourage each student. I am very patient, kind, flexible, and enthusiastic and I love working with children as much as adults. I strongly support basic skills: sight-reading, pitch and tone.
I have 25 years experience teaching kids and adults guitar. Also performing live and in the studio.
*** Lesson Details *** My objectives: to help students powerfully communicate through the essence of music and aid the development of children and adults by finding their strengths and weaknesses and to develop their skills and show their musical talents. I emphasize basic skills, good sight-reading, guitar technique, and theory.
Lessons are held at either your home, or mine using composers from various time periods that speaks to the individual student. Also,I do prefer to work weekly with my students. A beginner lesson may be 10-15 min. for warm-ups and scales, 10-15 min. theory and rest playtime. In three to six months the student will be able to read sheet music and should be able to perform simple songs.
An intermediate lesson has more focus on music and technique from a specific genre. A specialty is preparation for guitar auditions or doing live or studio gigs.
I enjoy teaching children from age 5 up to adults.
*** Specialties *** I teach the basic skills very strongly, and also encourage students and challenge them, as well. I also have new techniques for teaching Electric, Acoustic & CLassical Guitar. I do prefer to teach a weekly lesson.
I have been taking guitar lessons with Ahmad Since 2011. Music has always been important to me and my lessons with Ahmad have been a continual source of inspiration and joy. I love Ahmad's musical philosophy and regardless of what I'm interested in he is always able to help me better myself. I continue to be very busy in my life but always find myself coming back to music. Through taking lessons with Ahmad I have been able to achieve many of my musical goals and know that if I keep practicing I will be able to achieve even more of my goals.
Ahmad is extremely talented, intelligent, and friendly and is always there to support me in whatever new musical concept I wish to learn next. He can help anyone looking to better themselves in a wide variety of areas regardless of the style of music you are interested in. I have been studying country and jazz with him primarily, as my goal is to be able to write my own music and put together a band some day. I have no intention of stopping music lessons with Ahmad as they continue to be something I look forward to every week. Anyone would be lucky to have such a great teacher.

I've had the pleasure of taking lessons from Ahmad for a couple of years. He is a very knowledgeable and patient instructor with the ability to find minor technical flaws in my playing and easily correct them. I really enjoy his philosophy and musical understanding with a really high ability to dissect and explain elements of a song and relate it to music theory that's easily understandable. On top of that he is a super nice guy that exudes nothing but a positive attitude and gives one the impression that anything is possible in one's musical effort that is really infectious. Don't hesitate to give Ahmad a try.

Great teacher...I would highly recommend Ahmad as a Guitar Instructor. Each week I am getting better at playing the guitar. I just gave a Gift Certificate to my friend to get a guitar lesson from Ahmad.
I am a trained Classical guitarist with a BA in Music.
Whether you want to learn a few songs, improve your chops or all-out shred, your lessons are designed to get your playing where you want it to be. Your lesson plan will be custom-tailored to your ability and geared toward your goals as a guitarist.
In addition to private lessons, I am currently a guitar/bass instructor at a local academy with students of all ages and skill levels.
I have over 20 years of guitar-playing under my belt, 10 years of teaching experience and a B.A. in Music to boot! I played guitar in a bunch of bands and currently play bass in Light Creates Shadow, a rock band here in Portland, OR. I love music of all styles and am passionate about passing along my music knowledge to my students.
Your lesson plan (Roadmap) will include the following:
Technique - You will learn proper playing technique to
ensure accurate playing as well as an injury-free career.
The Fretboard - Learn notes, scales, arpeggios and know your way around your instrument.
Harmony - Learn how to play chords, how to write music using chords, chord inversions and more.
Musicianship - Music theory, improvisation, songwriting, sight-reading, and everything an aspiring guitarist needs.
Progress Reports (Checkpoints) - Don't worry, this isn't a report card! This is just a check in every so often to remind us how far we have come and where we want to go from here.
My teaching style is based on the following core values:
"Keith is very exacting and wants me to do it right. Even if I know how to read music and meter, ifI made a mistake because I couldn't find the place on th
e guitar, he would make me start over. Perfect for me"
"I've really enjoyed being taught by Cole. He is very patient and has been great at answering all my questions. I'm still a beginner but I've tried various
methods of learning classical guitar and from what I've seen through the various methods I've used, I believe I've learned more information that is going to project me forward faster through Cole in just a few classes than I have through the other methods I've tried so far."
"Remi is an excellent teacher. He is patient, kind, and encouraging. I also enjoy using the books he developed. The more challenging the lessons become, th
e more I appreciate his patience. Thank you, Remin!"
"I moved to San Diego for a few months for work and decided while I was there I would start to learn classical guitar. By luck or aligning of the stars or
whatever you want to call it I found Francesca as an instructor. When it came time for my first lesson, and first time playing a guitar, I was a bit nervous and didn't know what to expect. With that first hug and incredible positive attitude all worries shed away. I walked away from every lesson feeling like I had really learned something because you can tell she has a genuine desire to teach people. I'm really going to miss our weekly lessons but I walked away with a lifelong desire to play the guitar and a lifelong friend."
"Zander is extremely knowledgable and has the ability to communicate that knowledge in an easy tower and way. Great teacher!"
"I appreciate Diego's teaching and how he is able to catch the subtle things I am doing wrong over a web cam no less. His pedagogy sets a high standard for
playing, but the lessons progress naturally and logically.
As a teacher, Diego is very patient while encouraging me and knowing when the teaching pace should pick up or slow down. This makes his teaching very efficient while ensuring strong fundamentals.
I look forward to many more years of instruction by Diego and am happy to have found such a knowledgeable and skillful maestro."
"Great and motivational teacher who cares about your progress."
"He is a patient man!"
"It goes without saying that Jaxon is an outstanding teacher - I think that anyone who studies with him would agree. Both Jaxon's verbal instruction and hi
s playing demonstrations are clear and well articulated. His ability to select interesting repertoire seems limitless, for even an advanced student such as myself. He will guide you with techniques and tips while also keeping in consideration your own interests and goals."
With so much amazing classical guitar music to choose from, how do you decide which pieces are absolutely essential to learn to play? Here, we'll share our top picks for classical guitar students to study and play.
To study the classical guitar is a great and noble pursuit. Bringing back music that is centuries old is not a easy task, especially when the documentation and the preservation of sound was increasingly difficult the farther you get from the 1900’s. This makes the job of a classi …
