I teach the very basics in playing the classical guitar such as how to hold the guitar, correct finger placement, picking and strumming techniques, learning notes on the guitar, reading tablature, guitar scales, music theory, and learning to play simple classical songs. I have been playing the guitar since I was 10 years old and have had a great deal of experience playing all genres of music including Classical music.

Classical guitar students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are a part of basic music vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Chords are also basic vocabulary of the musical language.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the students' goals. However, I strongly encourage everyone learn to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Classical repertoire (songs) utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. And by the way, they are really fun to play.

A beginning student will practice all these subjects as part of the daily practice routine. A half hour practice session will ...

My two daughters, 13 and 16, have been taking lessons from Rachel for about a year now. They were beginning and intermediate levels. Both of them have enjoyed working with Rachel. She has kept lessons fun and engaging and we have seen a lot of progress. My daughters love celtic fiddle songs and Rachel has helped them play more on pitch and taught them some neat techniques. Rachel has also been very patient with our scheduling changes and is a great communicator.

Rachel is a terrific and inspiring fiddle teacher. Lessons were focused on achieving my goals (which I did) but lots of fun too. Rachel is great at suggesting a number of approaches to improving your skills and also suggested some great new fiddle tunes! I highly recommend Rachel for fiddle lessons.

My goal as an instructor is to keep the lessons fresh, fun, interesting, and to ultimately guide the students to better teach themselves as they gain experience and familiarity with the instrument and music. Students can have their lessons catered to the music and styles they wish to pursue. Lessons are tailored to each individual student so that we can build upon their strengths and focus on lessons to improve weaker areas. Students will learn how to build dexterity, use proper technique, and be creative. Every student has different goals, some really want to learn theory and read music. Others may simply want to learn to strum a few chords. Whatever the goal, I can provide the instructions to help the student succeed!

"Matt is a great teacher. Patient, knowledgeable, and always adding little interesting bits to the lessons. He pointed out my mistakes and was guiding me to make my playing much better. He opened me to the various interesting topics in music theory and pointed out importance of posture and exercise – playing scales and various simple arrangements. He has a great repertoire of songs of different genres at different levels, for his students – even those like me, who like classical music. I would very strongly recommend him for anyone wanting to learn or improve guitar playing skills."

"I feel it's safe to say that Jason would be a great teacher for anyone. I am a 78 yr old who has been self-teaching classical/fingerstyle for years but to really make progress I need instruction from a good teacher. I had my first lesson with Jason and am confident that he will prove to be the right instructor for me. He is extremely skilled, versatile, patient, and definitely personalizes his instruction for the student. I am more enthused about playing than I’ve been for years – and only after one lesson!!"

"I had been playing primarily heavy metal guitar for the past decade or so, but recently I had been itching to give classical guitar a shot. I chose Shaun primarily because he lived in my area and because he offered in-home lessons at a very reasonable rate.

After 6 months of lessons or so, I have to say I've had every expectation met and exceeded. He puts a lot of effort into designing his own instructional materials (exercises, theory work, etc), and he always comes to the lesson with a plan. He's also done a great job helping me develop proper technique (particularly in the right hand) and certain musicianship skills (e.g., improv, inflection/mood). The pieces he has chosen for me to work on have been both challenging for my skill level but also musically compelling.

Most importantly, he's just the nicest guy in the world, always has a lot of enthusiasm (but isn't over the top), and has an open mind when it comes to others' taste in music and what his students want to get out of the guitar.

In sum: my lessons with him have been very effective and have been a blast, I highly recommend him!"

4 Essential Classic Rock Guitar Solos That Will Make You a Better Player

Learning to play other people's guitar solos is a great way to begin learning to write your own! Guitar teacher Nils B. shares his tips to learning four classic rock solos so you can develop your technique... An essential part of every musician's development is to imitate those who have already mastered their instrument. After settling on a song, give it a couple of close listens (preferably on headphones or a decent stereo), pick up a good transcription, then learn the rhythm parts, while …
