Classical guitar students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are a part of basic music vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Chords are also basic vocabulary of the musical language.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the students' goals. However, I strongly encourage everyone learn to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Classical repertoire (songs) utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. And by the way, they are really fun to play.

A beginning student will practice all these subjects as part of the daily practice routine. A half hour practice session will ...

Taylor was so patient and kind with our 6 year old son. He was very accommodating and explained in simple terms the beginning of playing the electric guitar. He was kind and soft spoken which helped with an energetic 6 year old. He was able to redirect my son’s attention when he would wonder. I am so glad we picked him as our son’s instructor.

I have developed a standardized, systematic approach to guitar instruction based on the belt system used by traditional martial arts. As students progress through the ranks, they are awarded different color “belts”. Beginners are white belts. The next level is yellow belt. Orange is next followed by red, purple, blue, and finally a black belt! I use pre existing text books so that the learning material is organized and easily accessible. I have had great success with my methods and my system makes the learning a lot more fun. I can also customize lessons for intermediate to advanced students who need to focus on certain key areas and can also prepare students for college entrance auditions. Group classes are available in special subject such as theory, note reading and advanced harmonic and melodic concepts. I am an energetic and enthusiastic instructor who insures that students enjoy their learning experience while being able to gauge their progress toward their personal musical ...

About Billy

Most of what I do as an instructor stems from my frustration as a student. I am convinced that the way I was taught to play music on the guitar is NOT the best way to learn it. I have spent a great deal of time developing my own methodology and feel as though I have a much better way to convey info

"Mark played for my wedding, and I was incredibly impressed. I had certain musical portions of my wedding pre-arranged, but those plans ended up falling apart. Mark was able to pick up and play beautiful music right when I needed him to. His flexibility and willingness to go the extra mile helped make my wedding as successful as it was! He really saved the day, and I'm so thankful he was there! Read on as Grand Rapids, MI teacher Marty L. explains...   As musicians or music-appreciators, we all have our favorite genres. You will most likely find me grooving to the new Red Jumpsuit Apparatus EP (which is pretty cool) or exp …
