I teach Celtic (lever) and pedal harp. Strong technical foundation based on blend of Renie, Salzedo and Russian technical schools. Repertoire dependent on each student's individual goals, but including popular and jazz music. Emphasis on musicality and expression.

About Vanessa
A concertizing musician since age 9, I hold a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music in instrumental performance from the California State University Los Angeles, where I was named the CSU system's youngest to receive a graduate degree. In 2005 I earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Arizona, where I was the Graduate Teaching Assistant. I have also been honored as the University of Arizona's youngest doctoral graduate, receiving my degree at age 19.

I have performed as a member and guest soloist with countless chamber ensembles, orchestras, and bands across the United States. Highlights of my international tours include concerts in Shanghai, Seoul, South Africa, Madrid and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In addition to playing for such notables as Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou, Tippi Hedren, Barbara Sinatra, and
Florence Henderson, I have played as an honorary guest at UCLA, the Colburn School, UC Santa Cruz, for the Japanese Ambassador and Embassy, and appeared as guest artist with the Anderson String Quartet, Barry Manilow, and most recently with Il Divo, as well as made several television appearances. My extensive performing experience means that no matter your skill level, as my student I will have you performing, sharing your music with others, and becoming an artist.

I have been the recipient of numerous awards for both my musical and academic performance, including the Valeria Finzi Memorial Harp Competition two years consecutively, the Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, and have been named as a Medici Scholar and on the Who's Who Among American Women and National Dean's List. I am also active as a composer, arranger, and transcriber, and have taught for the past 16 years. Teaching has always been a special joy of mine, and I have experience teaching students of every age and skill level. I believe in an individualized approach for each student and love to inspire students with my own love of music and lifelong learning. I have worked as a teaching artist with the McCallum Theatre Institute (with elementary-age children) and an instructor for the Osher Institute (age 55+). With a solid background in Classical masterworks, my technical skill and artistic vision allows for interpretations of a variety of music spanning Celtic, Latin, pop, jazz, and rock genres. I teach piano, harp, music theory and musicianship at Mt. San Jacinto College, music history at College of the Desert and provide private instruction from my studio in Palm Springs.

What do you want to learn? If you are passionate about music and interested in improving your skills I will mentor you to help you achieve your personal goals. I will personalize our curriculum depending on your experience level, needs, and desires. I believe in a well-rounded approach so we'll focus not only on leaning the notes, but the inflections and expressions of music, performance techniques, technical dexterity, music theory, and music history. In this way not only can you be a skilled performer, but an informed one as well, no matter what your age. My students are my highest priority- I love working with children, introducing them to music for the first time, as well as with the adult student who "always wanted to take lessons" but hasn't been able to yet. Furthering the talents of experienced musicians is also a pleasure. I will be honored to help you in your musical journey!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio: quarter grand piano, pedal harp, Celtic harp, electroacoustic harp. There is an adjacent seating area so parents are always welcome to sit in on lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Under special circumstances I am happy to travel to students who have their instrument and related equipment.

*** Specialties ***
I teach both Classical and popular styles and can specialize according to my students' needs/interests.

First lesson went FAR better than I would have predicted. I needed help accessing Lydia, on line. She was helpful and patient. It worked! I look forward to being a harp candidate for a chair at the Boston Symphony Orchestra. There may be one open during my harp tutelage with Lydia.

FAQs:

Do I need to have any musical experience to learn to play the Celtic harp?

It's not necessary to have any prior musical background before embarking on harp lessons. If you have never taken up an instrument before, Anne will teach you harp technique and how to read music, too. It's a plus if you have some past musical experience, because you'll already know the rudiments of reading sheet music. Anne teaches from ages 7 and up. If your child is younger than 7 and anxious to play the harp, get them started on the piano first. This way, when they come to Anne at an older age, they will already know how to read music (harp sheet music and piano sheet music look alike).

Is the harp difficult to learn?

It's no more difficult to learn than any other instrument. If you really want to learn and you practice, you'll learn quickly. It's all about motivation.

Do I need to own a harp to learn to play?

For online lessons, you'll need to have your own harp. You can also buy a harp from Anne. She uses Triplett Harps as rentals and can help you get started on a rent-to-own harp, and is an authorized dealer if you decide you want to purchase a harp in the future. (Note: Anne only rents to students taking lessons from her in her studio. Rentals are not available to students taking online lessons.)

What does Anne teach?

Anne assesses your goals and your experience before designing a learning path that is right for you. For this reason, her lessons are always one-on-one and not taught in a group fashion. Of course, parents are welcome to sit in on their child's lesson.

What is Anne's experience?

Anne studied music theory and received her formal music education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). When the Celtic harp piqued her interest, she studied harp techniques from world-renowned harpist Sylvia Woods and later contributed to her book Music Theory & Arranging Techniques for Folk Harps. Anne also studied professional stage performance with Ed Hooks (San Francisco, CA) and at the Living History Centre (Novato, CA). Anne applied her formal training to teaching music for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She continues to work with students presenting educational demonstrations for school assemblies. Anne has given workshops to students in the Sacramento Waldorf School, El Dorado Union School District, Merced Union High School District, and Minden Elementary School. She has taught harp since 1987, offering educational demonstrations, focused workshops, and taking on private students. She performed on the 2015 GRAMMY® Award Winning Best New Age Album, "Winds of Samsara".

I teach harp lessons to students of all ages. I believe in positive encouragement, goal-setting, and a balance of technical discipline and fun! I have nearly 15 years of experience teaching all skill levels, and 7 of those years were spent as a full-time harp instructor teachings hundreds of students in Atlanta Public School system. I would love to meet you and help you discover the joy and confidence that comes from playing beautiful music. I am always happy to help students get started on the harp and will guide you through every facet of renting/purchasing an instrument.

About Carolyn
Sharing my love of music and teaching others is my passion. I began teaching piano and harp lessons when I was in high school. After earning two degrees in music performance at the University of Arizona, I continued my love of teaching by working as the Artistic Director of the Urban Youth Harp Ensemble for 7 years. There I taught harp lessons to hundreds of students, and tried to make music fun and accessible to everyone regardless of their background. I believe that students learn best when the teacher is able to balance hard work and discipline with joy, humor, and a caring relationship with each student.

Harp lessons are a great way to learn the FUNdamentals of music at any age! Whether you want to perform, or just experience harp for yourself, private lessons offer an easy way to try it out, even before buying your own instrument!
Lessons are available for beginners or experienced players with this certified music teacher.

About Sarah
I am a music teacher in Southeastern Wisconsin, specializing in clarinet and harp. I graduated from VanderCook College of Music, and previously studied clarinet at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. I have been playing harp for more than 15 years, performing for various events, both as a soloist and in ensembles. Clarinet and Saxophone were next, widening my performance experience, and inspiring me to continue learning to play and teach various instruments. I added other woodwind and brass instruments into my repertoire until I became a certified K-12 music teacher. I still perform, but my main focus will always be teaching!

Instrumental lessons are ideal for school music students, but are available for anyone who wants to learn. Your goals determine our progression, and it's never too late to start!

Harp can be a daunting instrument
for beginners, and I strive to make it as accessible as possible. Students may choose to play on my harp for as long as they would like before purchasing their own instrument.
