I have 17 years experience performing drum set, hand drums, mallets and many other percussion instruments. I received a Bachelor's in Music for Percussion Performance and Music Education from the Sacramento State School of Music and I received my Master's in Music for Percussion Performance from the University of Nevada, Reno. I have experience teaching in public schools (high school and middle school levels), the collegiate level, music camps, and I have maintained a private studio for over two years. I have a method of teaching based on what you want to learn while also going over technique, posture, musicianship and music theory. My teaching is based entirely on the student as many people have different ways of learning so I do my best to make myself clear. My goal is to make lessons fun and informative, so let's enjoy the journey of making music!

This is a play-by-ear approach. Virtually all pop music bands, regardless of genre, have for the past 65 years used drumming that is played by ear. This means, without the use of written music. Few venues today require drumming to written "drum" music charts.
You will learn the basics of music structure, how to provide a rhythmic foundation and then to embellish from there. We will play along with live music (basic Rock-n-Roll) learning to hear and interpret what's going on in the music and how drums help create that sound. Stick control, posture, maneuvers and techniques along with hardware management and maintenance are all included with the focus on becoming a working and productive member of a band.
Student should have access to at least a basic drum set.

My 6 year old is well... a 6 year old but Dr. J is so patient with her and has already taught her so many new skills in just a few short lessons. He keeps the lessons fun but is able to refocus her on her lessons. Dr. J is an overall amazing musician that is very skilled in a variety of musical techniques. He is also very professional and extremely reliable (even in inclement weather). I would recommend Dr. J to any family that is wanting their child to learn how to play music.

I have been working with students of all ages and levels for over 26 years and have learned something meaningful from each and every one them. Nothing makes me happier when I see them getting into great schools and acquiring lucrative jobs that make them happy, My students walk away with tools to not just play a musical instrument but a skill set strong enough to tackle any task.
I am equally versed in performing on and teaching drum-set (Pop, Rock, Jazz, Latin etc...), all the percussion instruments of the orchestra (ask about my state of the art recording studio where all of these instruments live), and hand drums including congas, bongos, Djembe etc... Anything you can strike scrape or shake is available for study either online or at my studios.

Over the past 12 years, we've given over 3,000,000 lessons to happy customers around the world.
Brent has the ability to incorporate his musical training and knowledge in an easy-going yet structured manner, which has been very relatable to my son. Always mindful, Brent would express interest in what my son enjoys listening to, and/or would like to play on the drums, and integrate that with exposure to other genres, necessary musical theory, musicianship and technical skills. He would also provide valuable tidbits throughout the lesson and has pointed us to numerous helpful resources to aid in my son’s skill advancement. My son enjoys every lesson and actually practices without check-ins from Mom - no small feat for a 14-year old boy! (We have had the opportunity to see Brent play live a few times, which has been tremendously inspirational to my son.)
Brent is a great communicator and a wonderful resource when we have technical questions. He also lets us know in advance when a lesson may need to be rescheduled.
We feel very fortunate to have Brent as a teacher, as not only is my son learning about music, there are life lessons incorporated as well.
Thank you Brent!"

Super chill guy, and I’m sure he’s great for every skill level and age. Thanks Kevin, will be back soon for follow up sessions!"
