Darrell helped me a lot to get a handle on my Ableton rig. I needed to set up midi tracks, locate presets to create cool sounds from plugins. Then I needed to export the audio of a couple of those tracks to import into a separate Pro Tools project. Lot of progress, thanks Darrell! -- Frank S

For anyone starting out at any age, I spend some time doing an "introduction" section. We talk a bit about favorite musical artists, and try to map out a long term goal (ex. learn their favorite artists songs, play with a group, learn a style, etc.). Even if the student does not know right away any particular goal- at least a reason to play the instrument is good enough. From there, we can set attainable goals.

Anyone can feel a rhythm and better yet make one. I want to help bring that out!

About Joe

Growing up in a musical family, I have studied piano as a child before falling in love with jazz music and drums when I got older. In school I studied jazz theory, played in Honors and All Catholic band while playing with different local artists in the Philadelphia area eventually branching out to

I came to Joe with no serious interest in playing music. After speaking with him a few times I was intrigued and began lessons. His, obvious lifelong passion and understanding of the drums encouraged me to continue along my musical journey. He is a masterful guide and I look forward to my first performance.

Vir is a gifted teacher. He has taught my son guitar for more than a year. He meets my son where ever he's at in his practice, attention and interests with calm, skilled focus and intention . Vir's background as performing musician infuses his teaching with an enthusiasm and creativity of practicing his teaching. We are truly grateful for Vir.

Vir is beyond your typical vocal coach. He was a huge help on things like pitch accuracy and phrasing, but more than anything, his focus on getting me to tap into and harness my inner power has already paid huge dividends in my recordings and performances. Further, Vir is an amazing person to know and his home-studio in Berkeley is magnificent!

"I'm an older student with no ambitions of making drums a career at this stage in my life. I just wanted to learn what I had been putting of for decades and become a respectable amateur. Keith starts with the fundamentals and mixes in a bit of "fun' now and again to keep things interesting. His experience is evident and he tailors the lessons to the student's skill level and goals which is important since no two students are alike. While not directly relevant to me, his industry experience and the stories he shares are fascinating and keeps the lessons interesting. There is more to music then just notes on a page. I highly recommend Keith to anyone who want to learn this wonderfully frustrating instrument."

"Michael is a patient and encouraging teacher. His lessons are energetic and we always get a lot done. You can tell, too, that he is knowledgeable and passionate about the material. He can apply both technical skill and professional experience to his lessons, while also adapting to the student and allowing them to advance at their own pace. He motivates with praise but will tell you when something needs work/practice. I leave every lesson excited to continue learning and improving. I recommend lessons with Michael!"

"Great experience!

My 7 yr old has been taking drum lessons with Henri for aobut 2 months. He is always excited to go, and never wants to leave at the end. He is learning rhythms and other drum basics. Henri is great at keeping him on track, but allowing for enough fun/free play as well. It is great that Henri has two drum kits so they can both play the whole lesson."

"I am 39 years old now and have been playing drums since I was a kid. I also learned to read music when I was a kid too. However, I had stopped playing for many years and consequently my playing and reading became really rusty. But then I decided to pick it up again and reverb signed me up with Keith. After 24 lessons, my playing and reading have improved substantially and Keith helped me regain my passion for playing and confidence behind the kit. He is a great teacher and drummer, which shouldn't surprise anyone since he has decades of experience as a drummer/musician in the music industry. His easy-going personality made challenging lessons fun and his encouragement helped really motivate me to get better. I would definitely recommend Keith as an instructor, whether you're young or old, beginner or advanced. You'll even get a good friend out of it too."

Learn to Play Drums in the Music Capital of the World

By Aaron P. - Austin Drum Teacher

Hi, my name is Aaron, and I teach drum lessons in Austin. I've played drums for 17 years, and I've been teaching students for 11 years. My favorite rhythms and grooves are derived from jazz, progressive rock, Latin, Indian, and African music.

If you want to take drum lessons in Austin, you’re in luck; it’s a great place for drummers! I play in eight different groups, and I get called to play with several other groups when their main drummer has another gig. Austin is full of talented singer-songwriters who need great drummers to play their tunes. If you play the songs right, you will get called again and again. If you are disciplined enough to follow through with your drum lessons, you will have rewarding results. The greatest thing that I have learned over the years is that there is something rewarding in every style of music, and learning drums will open your mind up to many other styles.

Need some inspiration to practice drums? Here are some great local venues where you can hear live music.

Central Market

Yes, it’s a grocery store, but there’s also a deli and coffee bar, and from 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Saturdays, you can witness some of the greatest music in Austin. If you live further south, head over to the Westgate location. The best thing about Central Market - you can listen to live music for free!

Strange Brew

Strange Brew is a coffeehouse where talented local bands play 90-minute sets from early in the morning to late at night. I’ve seen and played with some of the top musicians in town at Strange Brew. They take music seriously here, and it’s one of the best places in town.

One-2-One Bar

This place has a very eclectic vibe, and the music is always great. One awesome thing about this venue is the interactive drum clinics. I know a handful of great drummers who run the clinics, and I recommend checking them out.

The best way to improve as a drummer is to play with more experienced musicians. There are lots of opportunities to play with other great drummers in Austin. On Monday nights, you can join a jazz jam at the Elephant Room or check out a blues jam at Maggie Mae’s. For your middle-of-the-week music fix, stop by the Brass House for a Wednesday night jazz jam, or head over to Dozen Street to hear some awesome funk music.

With awesome drum teachers and an amazing music scene, Austin is a great place to learn drums. I wish you the best of luck on your musical journey!

Drum on, Aaron P.
