In my lessons I strive to make the maximum progress possible, while also having as much fun as possible. This is accomplished by imparting the most valuable, useful, and beneficial information in a fun and relaxed, low pressure environment, always with the students goals and priorities first and foremost. I also like to keep the student challenged at their current ability level.
For beginning students I stress basic fundamentals, just as you would in sports. It makes progress come at a much faster clip and avoids making time consuming corrections later. The longer you play with bad habits, the harder they are to break.
For more advanced students, I assess their current abilities, determine if any problems need to be addressed, and with their goals in mind, come up with the proper plan of action.
Having been self taught till entering college I understand all ends of the spectrum. In my career I have come across three separate groups of musicians:
1) Those who have good ...

My goal is to unlock your creativity! As an active musician, producer, and teacher, I love helping people learn to read, write, and play the music they love and envision. My teaching philosophy is that every aspect of music is connected and therefore to really get it, you have to learn it all! I take a wide ground up approach inching away at rhythm, melody, theory, technique, and feel altogether, advancing all musical skills equally over time.
About Joshua
I am a Nashville-based musician and record producer, originally from just north of Chicago in Gurnee, IL. I began my musical journey at the early age of three. My parents recount me banging on pots and pans before I could speak, so they placed me in piano lessons at three years old and drum lessons

I can’t speak more highly of Murray and highly recommend him."

I had never played drums before my first lesson but I had a singing background which gave me a good rythm. Colin was able to assess my coordination and abilities within that first lesson and understand how hard to push me. Colin is very good at the drums but knows what it takes to get there. Despite his elite skills he is able to relate well to the beginner, understand the different issues they are having, and provide a solution. I've been taking lessons at Colin's house where he has a couple of drum sets in the basement. The equipment he has is very good. It can be a little cold in the basement during a minnesota winter but when you're drumming it's not a big deal. I would say that his basement is an average place to play, but he's got good equipment which is most important. While teaching he doesn't follow a lesson book. He provides a good progression of excersises that allow you to gradually learn while using the entire drum set. Colin is a great teacher who is always willing to answer your questions and provides very fun lessons."

Mr. Mike is not only my drum teacher, he is also my friend. Every time I arrive at his studio, he always asks me about my life and how I’ve been, and he makes me laugh all the time. I hardly remember my life before Mr. Mike. I look up to him, and he has always been a great role model to me. Mr. Mike has inspired me to be as accomplished as he is on the drums when I grow up. Even when I am struggling to learn hard parts, he is always supportive and helps me through it. Mr. Mike never makes me feel bad about myself; in fact, he has made me more confident not only as a drummer but as a person. I think the world of Mr. Mike. I think he has helped to shape me to be the person I am today.
Mr. Mike is one of the kindest and warm-hearted people I have ever met. He inspires me to be the best drummer I can be. Mr. Mike is a huge part of my life, and I hope he always will be. I am so lucky to have him as my teacher. They don’t make words to express how highly I recommend him to be your drum teacher."
