I started studying the Drums when I was a teenager. I wanted to learn in order to improve my rhythm and timing on the guitar but I fell in love with the drums and continued private lessons and studied on my own so that I could create and record my own material. I started teaching in 2009 and have worked with over 100 students. Some of my favorite drummers are Chad Smith from RHCP's, Dave Grohl from Nirvana and Foo Fighters, Jimmy Chamberlin from Smashing Pumpkins, Roger Taylor from Queen, and many many more.
There is not just one book that will give you everything you need so I teach from a number of books by different companies like Alfred, KJOS, Hal Leonard, Railroad media, song books, to individual pieces from music notes. I also create, print, and email custom lessons created on a program in my Mac.
I use Pearl drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Roland electronic set, Sabian pad, LP cow bell and bongos, Vick Firth sticks, Tama Iron cobra double bass pedal, Evens and Remo heads.

About Christian
Music is my passion. I've been playing music since I was a child but didn't get serious with it until I was 14, that's when I got my first electric guitar. So, from then on I've been playing and studying music for over 16 years. I play and teach guitar, piano, drums, and bass guitar. Aside from taking years of private lessons with a number of teachers I also studied music and audio engineering in college. I'm constantly learning more. I keep my chops up by practicing and reading books by other professionals and songwriters. So, I have an arsenal of books and musical knowledge. When I'm not teaching I spend most of my time writing and recording my original solo music. I have a rock band that I've been playing with for over a decade. We are currently in the studio recording our first professional album.

I'm a ver
y patient teacher. I understand that not everyone learns the same way so I specialize in breaking things down and making music as simple as it can be for each kind of student. I don't use just one method, I pull from my arsenal of acquired knowledge, books, and my own studies. I keep lessons fun and interesting. A normal lesson with me would consist of two parts the first 30 minutes we would focus on learning and practicing warm ups, exercises, licks, notes, scales, chords, arpeggios, timing, rudiments, dynamics, ear training, theory, technique, etc. And the second half we would work on a song or jam together. Depending on the age and level of student, after spending six months studying with me you will be a rock star! LOL. Well, you may not have a recording contract, but you will have gained a volume of knowledge and taken your playing up a few levels. It's all about how much time and practice you put in and how much you want it. Every student has there own pace and desire so I do my part to help them become the best that they want to be.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home Studio: drum set, practice pad, piano and keyboard, guitar amps, chairs, parents can sit in on lesson.

Broken Arrow Music Studio: drum set, guitar amp, piano, and lobby room for parents.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in working with beginner to advanced level students. I teach all styles of music.

The drum set is a important instrument for every musician to try out, and it can be a ton of fun! A beginning student can expect to play along to many of their favorite songs in just a few weeks. An intermediate to advanced student can expect to have a skillset that will propel them into auditions with bands in whatever genre most interests them. This would entail an understanding of polyrhythm, feel (swing vs. straight, for example), consistent tempo and the ability to replicate basic drumbeats in any genre on their instrument. Any drum beat can be simplified or made more complex to suit the students ability level, so we can delve in to whatever kind of drum-beats inspire you!

About Julian
My musical background is uniquely rooted in classical training and popular music (non-classical) experience. I have professionally played toured and/or taught on a variety of instuments including Bass, Drums, Guitar, Piano, Ukulele and Voice for the past 8 years all over the world. My main focus has been bass guitar, on which I've played in over a dozen local bands. In addition, I received my Music BA from CU Boulder in 2014. My classical training in combination with my experience as a song writer, multi-instrumentalist and band leader gives me a uniquely well-rounded teaching style. I aim to teach and inspire students to use music as a joyful platform for learning important skills such as diligent practice, cognitive flexibilty, and creative expression.

Growing up and playing in Hawaii and Colorado, I have had the opportunity to l
earn from prolific, passionate and talented musicians from all over the globe. With my students, I love to share my experience, appreciation for eclecticism, nuance and groove while also emphasizing the importance of a theoretical foundation in music and comprehension of aural skills (hearing music in a theoretical context) as a means to fluent apprehension in any genre. Ultimately, this makes me a very flexible and expeditious teacher. What would you like to learn?

If you have any questions, or would like to chat, please feel free to call me at three O three 5032572 or message me via my Take Lessons profile. I look forward to it!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide most necessary lesson materials, however it is necessary that students have their own instruments on which to play and practice. I may request that students buy some materials such as tuners (for stringed instruments), lesson books, or music applications, but these are optional purchases.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I can teach in my home studio in South Boulder if that is your preference. The studio has keyboard, bass, drums, guitar, ukulele and vocal microphones. Students should bring their own instruments to the studio lessons (drums and piano provided in the studio) Parents may attend the lessons if they choose.

*** Specialties ***
Pop, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Reggae, West-African Highlife, Funk, and Soul

***Some additional background to my experience***
I grew up "noodling". I avoided the difficult task of learning to read proficiently until I was almost 18. Looking back I realize that for me, music was a way to relax and pause internal dialogue. I would create music, especially on the piano that was entirely my own, and based solely on intuition. I got by in piano lessons and choir for so many years as kid by relying on an intuitive ability to aurally recall music and "play by ear". Eventually, I was turned on to the necessity of being able to read when I was accepted into a nationally competitive choral program at Fairview High School under the direction of Ron Revier. Shortly after that, I picked up a guitar and discovered music theory.
Realizing that reading, and theory were inherently different things allowed by to accelerate quickly at music theory which opened so many doors for me creatively. Suddenly, my ability to improvise in context and write my own songs was born.
I realized that every note I sang or played was part of an essential structure, whether or not I was paying attention to it. This is why I particularly enjoy teaching aural skills, sight reading, and music theory in conjunction with whatever repertoire or skillset a student wants to learn. These things facilitate becoming one's own teacher which is the most important thing I can pass on to a student. If you can contextualize everything you hear, you can more easily pursue whatever type of music inspires you.
Understanding theoretical things like musical modes creates a structure around the seemingly elusive nature of musical improvisation. It comes naturally to some, but is stubbornly avoided by others. I assure you, anyone can do it with some guidance. Through the years, I have developed a handful of shortcuts and tools that allow elementary musicians to start creating their own music that is not necessarily oriented in genre or style, but can be applied to all of them. I look forward to sharing my passion with new students!

This was my 14 y/o and my very first lesson. We learned chords, strum patterns, and melody. Super fun evening! Julian even gave my 12 y/o a lesson on his drum set while we practiced on our guitars. Now the family is hooked! Excited for our lesson next week.

Julian has spent lots and lots of fun time with his nephews and nieces (age 13-2), playing music with and teaching--ukulele, piano, guitar and drums over the last few years, and as a result they all have some great skills, confidence, and excitement about music. He's kind and very tuned in to where his students are.
I'm his Dad so I've seen how rewarding it can be for his students. He's also given me a basic set of skills on the guitar. It goes without saying, I recommend him highly!!

There are many ways to cultivate your musical skill whether it's visual, kinesthetic, or auditory. Let's find out which way works best for you!

Most schools do not offer the flexibility in learning styles necessary for you to find your ideal way of processing new information, whether it be visual, auditorial, kinesthetic, memetic, right brain/left brain, etc.

That's why I'm here! I pride myself on working with each individual student on the subtle ways that they learn and form healthy habits. If you have any questions about my teaching styles or methods please ask!

A little more about me:

I have over 10 years of guitar experience, studying under Jazz heavyweights Corey Christiansen, Oteil Burbridge, and Dan Miller. I pride myself in putting my students needs and wants above all else. I wish to impart a love for music onto my students that can only be cultivated by the bond a teacher and their student share, let us learn and grow together!

About Grant
Hello!

My name is Grant and I’ve been helping students grow for almost 10 years now! How time flies! I have also earned a degree in Creative Writing from Louisiana State University for all of the students wishing improve their writing skills!

In addition to freelance work, (weddings, jazz brunch gigs, etc.) I am the lead guitarist for the Funk/R&B band Water Seed and the soul project RetroFit. I attended Indiana University for jazz guitar and have studied under jazz greats Dan Miller, Corey Christiansen, and Oteil Burbridge.

I pride myself in taking a students learning needs and using that as my basis for their specific lesson plan, always on a case-by-c
ase basis, tailored to each individual student. Everyone is at a different waypoint on their path so why would I use a predetermined formula to try and help them, am I right? I am excited to meet and grow with every single one of you, let's learn to love the life we have and let our studies become radiant!

I teach all kinds of disciplines from guitar, mandolin, banjo, and clarinet, to creative writing, meditation, and even astrology. If you have any questions about my teaching methods, skill level in a certain discipline, or anything thing you can think of I would be more than happy to answer you!

Anthony focuses on practicality with his lessons. A strong foundation and a good sense of time is key to being a working drummer. Once that foundation is set it is up to the student's interests on which path to take with the lessons and what styles and drummers to study.

About Anthony
Hailing from New York, Anthony picked up his first pair of sticks at the ripe young age of 9. After high school, he attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where Anthony was immersed in music for three years before graduating in 2016.

Anthony has studied with teachers such as Neal Smith, Bob Gullotti, Tony ‘Thunder’ Smith, Casey Scheuerell and Gustavo Agatiello during his time at Berklee and was also greatly influenced by classes and conversations with Ralph Peterson jr, Steve Wilkes and John Pierce. These people have shaped Anthony’s musicianship and professionalism, giving him the right tools for just about any musical situation.

I to teach the foundational concepts needed to benefit the most from playing the drums, whatever your goals might be. I use a lingual approach to the drums in order to empower students to excel in any situation or style of music.

My teaching approach is designed to lend the student control and expressive ability on the instrument. Rather than teaching specific beats and licks to regurgitate, I help lay a rhythmic and technical foundation that will enable you to play whatever you hear, efficiently. That way, your taste and personality will inform your drumming, rather than the technical hurdles of playing the drums.

Learning a relaxed technique is extremely important to provide a solid foundation for self-expression and to prevent potential injuries later on. I also expose students to many different styles of music, because diversity makes students’ playing more creative and opens their mind to other cultures and musical traditions.

I base my lessons around ...

About Jack
Hi! I’m glad you’re interested in taking drum lessons. I’m all about making learning to play fun. I’ve found that encouraging the student’s interest and enjoyment of music-making is the most important contributor to progress.

In the first lesson, it’s most important for us to communicate about what your goals are with the drum set. Whether you want to play in your local church, school, or even just play along to your favorite records, my job is to help you obtain the skills you need to make it happen and have a lot of fun in the process.

I tailor each lesson to each individual student – a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t usually work because each student has different strengths, weaknesses, and goals.

I welcome students of all ages and skill levels, even complete beginners!

I have a Bachelor’s degree in music from the Univ
ersity of Miami. I’ve studied the drum set formally for many years, and have spent thousands of hours rigorously studying and practicing many styles of music – everything from hip-hop, to jazz, to samba. I have also been performing professionally since I was a teenager and frequently perform locally in mine and others’ groups.

I was a self taught musician until college. My experiences are a little different in the sense that I never had a jazz band or marching band in school. Instead I started looking outside of school for musicians to play with and ended up playing with church bands all the way to world music ensembles. When I got to college I started to expand my music as much as I could and sang in my university choir for a year. After a year of college I moved down to Los Angeles and studied there while playing with multiple groups. I played in the craziest venues ranging from small bars to Comic Con and even places in Hollywood! I want to offer my students a unique but practical experience in my lessons and base it on my experiences while also ensuring that they are able to read and write music.

About Johnathan
I'm a drummer from a little town in New Mexico. I've had recording, performing and teaching experience since I was in high school and graduated from Los Angeles College of Music with an A.A in Drum Performance. I also studied Music Education for a year at Whitworth University in Spokane, WA.

My early music experience involves playing for my high school choir as well as leading worship in churches. I also played in local bars and pubs. In terms of drums I was completely self taught until college and also picked up other instruments on the side like guitar, bass and ukelele. The music I played ranged from CCM all the way to indie rock and punk as well as world music and classic rock n roll. My fondest music memories growing up were nights like playing Brown Eyed Girl in a old railroad cafe or playing John Mayer at a rodeo.

Once I graduat
ed high school I knew I wanted to learn music theory so I spent my first year studying music education at Whitworth. Even though academics weren't my favorite thing I learned a lot and took those lessons to LA a year later. I would encourage anyone pursuing music to work in Los Angeles. I made the best connections and lifelong friendships there and never had a dull day. I played shows and recorded with friends and even taught a drumline in Hollywood. I've attended and performed at places like NAMM, Comic Con and MUSEXPO in Hollywood. All of my teachers at LACM were working musicians as well. Some of the people I studied under includes Ralph Humphrey, Joey Heredia and Russ Miller.

In my lessons I always take a practical approach and build my lessons around the student. If you want to learn metal music, I will teach you how to function in a band setting and play fast. If you want to learn how to read charts, I have many books that I can recommend and teach out of. I hope that all my students can strive to learn discipline but also remember that music is a communication and conversation tool.
