I divide my lessons into technique (mostly done on a practice pad) and coordination (playing drums).
Learning the rudiments is essential for any drum set player or a percussionist. First, I focus on getting a nice clean single roll, double roll and a buzz roll which are the building blocks of all styles of drumming.
Once the student masters that he will be able to play with a nice feel and groove and have a natural approach to the drums so he can express himself effortless and with ease.
It will be lots of fun and you will groove with a smile on your face!

About Kolja

Kolja is a wonderful teacher. He's very laid-back and easy-going and all around a very pleasant guy to get along with. He is also very willing to work with people in whatever desires they have for the drums. Don't get me wrong though, you're not goofing off during the lesson. He's very focused on teaching the drums well and wants to make sure you're solid in whatever it is you're learning. He has a good balance between patience and making sure you're not falling into bad habits by using poor technique repeatedly. No matter what skill level you're at, I'm positive that you have something to learn from Kolja.

Kolja is great! I've taken lessons for various instruments since I was young and never had as much fun as I do in drum lessons. He has a great energy and gives positive, constructive feedback. His years of experience as a drummer and instructor were immediately evident. I felt improvement even after the first week of practice! I appreciated that he took time to understand what I wanted out of drum lessons and how I prefer to learn. I have been wanting to start drumming for years and am so glad that I found Kolja!

I studied drums when I was younger and wanted to reacquaint myself with my long lost art. I am so happy I chose Kolja, He has this amazing joyful energy. He's an amazing drummer and can explain how to do it. Wow! He made me feel really comfortable from the get go. He was very thorough assessing my skill level, my goals and how much time I actually have to give to practicing. He is teaching me how to reread drum notation and really making sure I have the proper posture and holding the sticks correctly. I am very interested in jazz drumming and poly-rhythm. I think with him I will reach my goals. I'm slowly getting there. He is really good at explaining and showing. I think I really lucked out.

About Kate
Originally from Buffalo, drummer/composer/improviser Kate Gentile has played and recorded with a panoply of renowned musicians since moving to NYC in 2011.

Kate has played with Anthony Braxton, Dustin Carlson, Andrew D'Angelo, Kris Davis, Marty Ehrlich, Michael Formanek, Ben Gerstein, Jon Irabagon, Chris Lightcap, Terry McManus, Matt Mitchell, Helado Negro, Ted Reichman, Chris Speed, and the Asphalt Orchestra, and has recorded with Jasmine Lovell-Smith's Towering Poppies and David Aaron's Flip City.

"...[G.'s] inventive drumming...eads the listener into a gentle place." -Step Tempest

"[G.'s] drum work on this [Fortune Songs] is exquisite." -“Bird Is The Worm

In addition to being a frequently used sideman and collaborator, Kate also leads bands exploring her own music, which often tend towards dense, long-form compositions with
unconventional rhythms and harmony. Her music has been described as "...hyper-detailed...designed to spur multi-faceted improvisation". Her most recently formed trio with pianist Matt Mitchell deals with a new book of compositions containing varied forms and harmonic and rhythmic structures that demand a spectrum of improvisational creativity.

Kate holds a dual degree in Jazz Performance and Music Education from the Eastman School of Music. Kate has also studied independently with a host of great drummers, improvisers, and composers, including Dan Weiss, Tim Berne, Tony Malaby, Marc Ducret, Miles Okazaki, and John Riley.

Kate has enjoyed teaching drum lessons independently for 10 years and has taught at the NYSMF summer jazz program and several schools.

When my 7-year-old son asked for guitar lesson's, my wife and I were at a loss. As we are not musically inclined at all. We found Jimmy from a friends recommendation and could not be happier. Our son, loves his lesson's with Jimmy, he is learning music theory , how to read music and how to make his guitar sing (for a 7-year-old, at least). Jimmy is very patient and attentive to the needs of such a small learner. We would highly recommend him to anyone looking to play.

Learning drums is extremely fun and satisfying! It involves the entire body and the mind, challenging in many different ways and extremely rewarding.

While it can be demanding to learn an instrument, it can be as easy as you want it to be. Our lessons can be designed to fit your personal goal. In the lessons we will play songs, study technique and reading and learn different genres of music - all while having fun!

I have been teaching for over 10 years, with experience in all levels (Beginner to Advanced) and in every age group. I am very passionate about teaching music, I believe it has the power to change lives, and also helps with just putting a smile on your face :)

About Noam
I have always been in love with music. Since I was a kid, listening to 90s Rock and Pop music, through my teenage years listening to 60s Rock, Progressive Rock and Jazz and up to today - listening and playing practically anything. The drums have always attracted me, so I started playing when I was 12 years old. The first album I've recorded with my friends came out when I was 16, and was heavily influenced by Prog Rock music. Around the same time, I started listening to Jazz which became my passion in music and life. I went on to study in an arts high-school, and later went to Berklee College of Music, from which I've graduated with a Masters degree in music performance and production and sound engineering.

I have been teaching for over 10 years now, and I am extremely passionate about it. I believe music can change lives, and instill
extremely important values. I am proud to say some of my students have already made impressive musical achievements, some have begun studying in Berklee themselves (with impressive scholarships) and all of them are having fun playing drums.

Well, there are a lot of good things to say about my time studying with Noam. He was always very versatile with teaching different genres and how to play each and every one of them (in dynamic ways, styles, independence wise and etc.) He helped me so much master my own craft. He also taught me how to read music and to think musically as a drummer and a side man, when I'm playing with a band, and even as a solo player. He would always make sure I was at my best when I showed him each new assignment that he gave me, and he always encouraged me to be at my best. He knows how to unlock potential in his students, and teach them how to build up that same potential. Even after all of this, He was always down to earth, generous, a one of kind soul and a loving teacher, and I always looked up to him and till this day, I see him as one of my mentors. I really wish I could learn more from him, if I wasn't in a far away country.

I've toured the world many times over, performing drums with Funk/R&B/Jazz/World music acts. I attended Berklee College of Music on a full ride scholarship, and have been teaching professionally for over 10 years, from clinics in Colombia, Costa Rica, West Africa, to workshops to students of all ages across the US, with award-winning groups such as Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, A.R. Rahman, & Women of the World. I listen to each students' needs and level, and in just a few lessons, I have seen students go from not knowing how to hold the sticks, to playing the drum parts to their favorite songs. I work hard to see my students reach their full potential as the next great drummers. Shoot me a message. I'm looking forward to getting started!

About Patrick
I live, breathe, eat, and sleep drumming. There's nothing more uplifting and meaningful as playing the drums to me, and I would love to have the honor to teach you.

I'm an award-winning world class touring/recording drummer and educator. I've lead drum & rhythm masterclasses across the US & Canada, as well as many other countries (Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica, West Africa, and more...) to students of ALL levels. After graduating from Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship in 2013, I went to Senegal, West Africa, to study the drumming language of one of the oldest drum cultures and perform with my mentors.

My goal is to bring each drummer I teach to their fullest potential, teaching drum technique, rudiments, coordination, independence, how to find the "pocket" and make the grooves feel GOOD so you get hired again and again
as a first-call drummer. My teaching is rooted in tradition, yet exploring ways to keep things fresh and exciting.

I am well versed in Jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop, Funk, Rock, Fusion, Afrobeat, Reggae, and many traditional folkloric styles from Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, Haiti, Senegal, Morocco, and more. The drum lessons are specific to each student's needs and interests, and the amount of practice material will be relative the student's level of commitment. Each student will be guided to become the best drummer they can possibly be, while having loads of fun doing it.

I'm looking forward to being your drum teacher!

There are a number of ways that we can approach your studies. My primary area of teaching is with jazz concepts and techniques (which is a great way to hone the skills necessary for most drum set styles) but I like bringing in other approaches as well. For example, I like using some of the ideas I picked up while studying in West Africa to deepen the groove when approaching rock, pop, and funk. I enjoy the diversity of using different ideas and repertoire to meet individual interests and goals.

About Daniel
I am currently earning my M.A in musicology at Hunter College and have been studying, teaching, and performing in NYC since 2002. My musical training really took off when I was awarded the Lundquist International Fellowship in 2001. This supported a year of study in Ghana, West Africa, and inspired me to continue my musical training at a professional level when I returned home to NY.

Upon returning, my interest in jazz grew immensely and I studied diligently with drummers Vinnie Sperrazza and Dan Weiss, and vibraphonist Tommy Mattioli. After years of intensive study and performing I began teaching in 2010. I have toured the U.S multiple times with different ensembles and also compose my own music for quintet.

I absolutely love teaching and will be applying to PhD programs next year to further this wonderful endeavor. I feel fort
unate to have been taught the lineage and progression of Western drumming from its African roots to its current manifestations in jazz and rock music. It is my honor to take students through the stages of practice that so many of the greats went through, while also demonstrating newer techniques and concepts as the styles evolve. It is my sincere pleasure to share this excellent art form.

I have been fortunate enough to discover a wonderful teacher and his name is Daniel Schubmehl. A humble, kind and nurturing teacher, I would recommend Daniel to anyone looking to improve their understanding of music theory, basic composition, drumming (kit or hand drum) and even piano. I found Daniel to be very sensitive to my needs as a student. While tailoring lessons designed to my interests, he also finds ways to introduce other exercises or perspectives that have proven helpful in my development as a musician. If I ever asked Daniel a question that he did not know the answer to, we would seek out the answer together, or he would take the time between our lessons to research my question. I very much appreciate his patience, attentiveness and perspectives. Daniel has helped me become a more sensitive musician and has strengthened my desire to pursue deeper understanding. His lessons are fun while also being incredibly effective and informative.

I have been an independent musician for my whole life, and I know a wide variety of instruments. I have been in a band setting for many years as well. I know what the most things are to teach because at one point, I was an aspiring drummer just like whoever I teach. Anyone who studies with me will also be provided a good amount of music theory knowledge and how to rock!

About Mason
Be my first student!

My students don't only learn how to drum, my students in the past have learned how to rock. I teach drum set, rudimentary percussion, and any marching band percussion instrument. I have been a percussionist my whole life, so I know the very steps needed to becoming a great drummer. My lessons are unorthodox, but in a way that's good for engagement and precision. My skill sets include leadership and encouragement, so I am a good teacher for beginning to more advanced students.
