I have taught for 18 years, giving both private and group lessons. I am a professional musician, having played in numerous bands, recorded and played shows. I have taugh all ages, and all elvels, and all styles. I play a number of instruments including piano, guitar, bass, violin, banjo, mandolin, and harmonica, in addition to writing and singing. I took private lessons for over 10 years, and also studied music in both high school and college. *** Lesson Details *** A student can expect to be treated with respect, and have a lesson tailored around their abilities, interests, and amount of practice time. I make the lessons fun but also informative. I try to get to know my students so that they feel comfortable. I am laid back, but also determined that a student practice well, and learn not only the instrument but music fundamentals as well. I try to show students that learning music is a lifelong pursuit that can provide all types of fun and personal fulfillment, in addition to being a potential career and social outlet. After 3-6 months, the student will be playing songs, good ones, not just scales. They will also have learned basics, such as chords and scales, as well as sight reading. *** Studio Equipment *** Basement converted into music studio with instruments, and piano and keyboard. Parents can sit in on lessons. Street parking available. *** Travel Equipment *** I provide all lesson materials, listening examples, and, on occassion, an instrument. I often use my laptop to play songs and tutorials for students (who don't buy records like we did in the old days.) Generally, students must provide instrument. *** Specialties *** I tailor my lessons based on three factors: a student's interests, their ability, and their amount of practice time. I do not use a cookie cutter method of teaching because each student is different. I have studied, formally and informally, rock, pop, blues, jazz and classical. My specialties are rock and blues. On occasion, I will use method books, such as the Schirmer books for piano, but only if the student clearly seems to benefiting from them.

Gordon L.

Gordon L.

4.7(30)
Gordon L. began playing music at a very early age but didn't begin to learn the saxophone until he was in fifth grade. Gordon's interest in music grew when he began to work sound systems for bluegrass bands and eventually he started to experiment more with music. Soon after he would pick up guitar which would spark his interest in further pursuing his playing of music. After he bought a guitar, Gordon would practice relentlessly, sometimes for as long as 12 hours a day. This passion for music allowed Gordon to go to a summer rock band camp in San Diego where he learned everything you need to know about touring, playing in a band, making a music video etc. When Gordon reached his senior year of high school he attended Perpich Center of the Performing arts in Golden Valley, Minnesota. While he was learned he took classes in ear training and music theory. He also took a Taiko drum class while he was at Perpich. Along with learning new musical concepts, Gordon also learned how the music business works which got him more interested in marketing the bands he performed in. Gordon also was able to take guitar lessons at Macphail in Minneapolis under the apprenticeship of James Allen. Gordon went on to Mesabi Range Community College where he received his Associates Degree. While there he played saxophone in the Community Band and guitar in bands he started himself. Gordon also took a banjo class, piano class and a music history class at Mesabi Range Community College. His main focus in the past years has been working with bands doing studio work, mini tours and CD production/marketing for those groups. After Community College, Gordon went to Evangel University in Missouri where he continued to study Guitar and Saxophone while picking up more woodwind and string instruments. Gordon took private guitar lessons and attended a Guitar Master Class at this college. He also attended Missouri State University where he learned about theory and composition. He also played Saxophone in the jazz band. While he attended school in Missouri he relentlessly continued to play in multiple groups live and recorded a Ska/Reggae CD (guitar and saxophone tracks) with the band Bringers of the Dawn. Gordon can fluently play and teach Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Clarinet, and Saxophone. Gordon is also willing to teach harmonica and banjo to those interested in learning. Gordon also has knowledge of several other cultural instruments with a background in piano lessons from high school and college. He got superior and excellent ratings at musical competitions for voice and saxophone in high school where he performed songs such as the Hungarian Dance #5 and Beautiful Dreamer. Gordon loves all genres of music and enjoys learning every style he can in order to improve his musical instruction. For the moment Gordon is pursuing songwriting particularly in the field of cultural music. Focusing on the students immediate musical needs, Gordon is able to encourage students to set goals in order to efficiently practice, concentrate and focus during the lesson time. Gordon is very patient with every student so that they refrain from becoming frustrated, overwhelmed or intimidated. Realizing the importance of music, Gordon makes sure that every student leaves each lesson having learned something new.

I picked up the harmonica in Los Angeles while headlining my own blues band. I am no pro but I can play beginning to intermediate harmonica solos well and love to teach the basics to beginners. I have played for the last 18 years or so and have taught novices doing it for fun and to lead singers who wish to add this skill to their bag o tricks! I love helping people explore this wonderful, small but powerful instrument. If you've got a mouth and a pair of lungs, you can play the harmonica! My goal is to help students learn how to play harmonica through a combination of basic music theory for the instrument, exercises to work on breath support and embouchure and song material. I'll have you playing a harmonica solo on lesson #1 if you’re up for it! For those who want to, we can learn new song material at every lesson. There's nothing more fun than whipping out your harmonica at a party and playing a little song or two or three! If you've been thinking about taking this up but don’t know where to start, don't wait any longer, it's easier to learn than you might think and it's just a message away!

Harmonica, also known as the "Mouth Harp" is a very easy, practical and fun little instrument for all ages! You can take this little gem of an instrument wherever you go. We will start with the very basics of how to hold the harmonica correctly, proper mouth position, how to achieve a nice, clean sound when blowing and drawing (putting it simply, drawing your breath back in, inhaling.) The items you will need is a Harmonica in the key of C and a Lesson Book. Harmonicas come in various keys, but the key you will need to learn when signing up in the TakeLessons platform will be the KEY OF C. Once you have signed up, either for yourself, or a child, I will then send you an email with the link where you can purchase the lesson book that we will work out of. Once you have a good foundation and are comfortable playing the harmonica, we can then determine what genre or style of music you would like to play. There are books that have a nice selection of songs that cover bluegrass, country, hits, gospel and more. NEW! Starting on 9/1/2021: I have decided to offer all new students an "indefinite discount" for not only back-to-school students, but for all ages. To be a bit of a financial help, I've lowered my current prices to give a long term discount. A 30 minute lesson is usually $28.00. With the discount, it will be $23. A 45 minute lesson is usually $39, with the discount, it will be $34. A 60 minute lesson is usually $50, with the discount, it will be $45. I am looking forward to helping you learn how to play this fun and very unique little "pocket" instrument!
