Traditional music education is not for everyone! As somebody who learned the fundamentals of the drum kit through unorthodox methods, I aim to be a source of guidance and advocacy for self-discipline in understanding the musical world. With over a decade of experience under my belt, I offer insight on technique, feel, performance, recording, and instrument maintenance; all of which are important skills in the life of the modern gigging musician. While I may not be able to work you through the fundamentals of jazz, I can provide fun and valuable insight to being the best drummer you can be, on and off stage.

Do you have two left arms and two left feet (or two rights of each if you're left-handed), and have no idea how to coordinate behind your drumset?

Do you want to be able to accurately listen to a song and "play it" on your steering wheel as you drive?

Do you constantly have trouble maintaining speed, slowing down or speeding up for no reason?

How about wanting to go all-out and learning those crazy double-bass parts and snare rolls popular in today's extreme metal?

I require a practice pad for lessons to learn rudiments and coordination techniques, even if it's just a mouse pad taped to a heavy book to start with. If you continue taking lessons, I can recommend the best practice pad for you.

I typically will teach and write drums using a combination of tablature and standard sheet music. Tablature a simple set of lines and X marks that are much easier to read, and once learned will instantly give you access to thousands of songs.

You'll learn how to keep time with ...

As an educator, I strive to provide my students with the tools that they will need to explore the direction that they want to take with their instrument. This can include from enjoying drumming as a hobby, performing in small jazz ensembles, recording electronic and acoustic drums in major recording studios, to performing with a full orchestra! There is literally no limit to what you can do.

My focus is to get hobbyists to enjoy performing drums in the comfort of their own home or with friends, and to have my professionally-minded students go out into the world of performing and recording music. All of these environments are where the ultimate joy of playing an instrument can be expressed.

As a gigging and studio musicians, I understand what it takes to get to the stage or studio, apply oneself in that environment, and come away with a satisfying experience that you can then build upon for the rest of your life.

Jim has been a fantastic teacher to our son. He explains everything patiently and approaches his lessons very systematically. He selects songs that incorporate essential drumming skills (e.g. songs that include doubles, paradiddles, accented notes, etc.). This way, the the student is able to develop an understanding of how theory fits practice.

"Hunter loves his teacher, we are very happy with him. He is good at teaching the fundamentals of music theory, like notation and scales but also keeps it relevant and fun. He asks Hunter what type of music he's into so that it isn't a chore to practice- it is pretty cool that a 10 year old is playing The White Stripes!"

"Andy is an excellent instructor.

My 14 year old son had been playing drums for an hour or more every day for several months, and was making fair progress. He was convinced he could learn the drums on his own. But between his first and second lesson he improved exponentially. We were clearly going down the right path.

While my son was uncomfortable with the idea of taking lessons from someone he didn’t really know, Andy established a strong rapport with him by the end of lesson 1. And he was very eager to come back for lesson 2.

We intend to continue lessons with Andy for the foreseeable future."
