In my lessons, I foucus on the techniques on drums, music listening, rhythm understanding and musicality as a musician. My goal as a teacher is to help my students to find out what their goals are musically, encourage them to do the practices and guide them into the right direction, so that in the end of the day, they would be able to play what they really like, be better on the instrument and have fun with it!

I teach drum set and marching percussion, teaching for four years. I teach both tenor and snare drum for marching.

Lessons are tailored to the individual student and their experience, goals, and materials available. Having the respective instrument at the teaching location is preferred, but the minimum materials required are drumsticks, a drum pad, and a stand for the drum pad.

Drum set students should expect to learn the basics of technique and drum set-up. From there, lessons are tailored to the individual student, specifically what genres they are interested in. For beginners, I use "The Best Beginner Drum Book" by Drumeo.

Marching percussion students learn a heavier emphasis on technique, constantly being implemented into lessons. Students learn a variety of musical pieces and see technical and musical growth through each piece.

About Kevin

I've been involved in music since fifth grade loved it since! As a performer, I was heavily involved in my high school's music program being involved in: the advanced jazz band (drum set), advanced choir (baritone), musical pit (drum set/auxiliary percussion), show band (vibraphone/tenor drums), an

My music lessons are fun and educational. Students are busy and dealing with life. Music should not be another thing you "get through". Whether you're young and dealing with multiple subjects in school or you're an adult with a job and responsibilities, music should be the place to escape all of that. I want to teach you whatever you would like to learn and develop a curriculum based on your own wants.

Want to learn songs from your favorite bands? Great! Let's do that!

Want to prepare for college auditions to become a music major? I can help you with that!

Want to play music with your friends and be a part of a cool band? I've been there and done that, and can help you with that too.

Whatever your reason for playing music, whether its for fun or scholarships or auditions or whatever, music should be FUN! I want to help you with that.

There are materials like "Stick Control" and "Survival Guide for the Modern Drummer" but at the end of the day, I want to help you play music, ...

Luther stays where I’m at and then helps me go the next step. That is useful for consistent gradual progress without the frustrations of moving either too slow or too fast (I am a beginning tenor saxophone player). Nice interpersonal style, patient and easy going, while methodical.
Geoff K.
I think Luther is great. He works with my 10-year old son on piano, singing and even trumpet and violin as needed. My son has to work hard to progress, and Luther customizes the lesson plan for him and seems to understand him well. I'm really excited about them working together.

Experienced drummer with 13 years of experience, performing in multiple bands genres ranging from Rock, Blues, Jazz, Punk, Country, and more.

I began learning drums through Rock Band, yes.. I said a video game. After a month or two I was playing songs on hard or expert difficulty and I soon began applying the rhythms and rudiments I was learning in Rock Band to a real drum set. I began playing drums every day. I played in a few different bands in my teen years, recorded in studios and currently I accompany musicians around San Diego regularly.

About Kevin

I am a Multi-Instrumentalist with a main focus in Guitar, Drums, & Bass. I have experience performing live, recording, and songwriting for 13 years. I focus my lessons around the understanding of music theory (chord progressions, scales, rudiments, rhythmic structures, picking techniques, etc) and

My daughter went to Kevin for instructions on guitar. She had no experience, no guitar, and we weren’t sure if she’d like it. Kevin gave us affordable suggestions for a guitar to buy, and she has looked forward to his lessons each week. She really wanted to learn how to play an Adele song and after a few weeks she has mastered it. Kevin is personable, reasonable, intelligent, and thoughtful. I’ve been recommending him to our friends who have children that have been considering lessons.

Kevin is great! i’ve been playing drums in bands for 15 years and took a couple lessons with him to tighten some things up! i learned a lot of great things from Kevin. made me a better drummer!

Kevin worked with me on drums for a few months and was incredibly patient with me as he helped breakdown songs bit by bit, was super encouraging along the way, and extremely fun to be around. I couldn't recommend him enough!!

"If You Want Beyond a Great Teacher, Then Go With Matt

I have been taking lessons with Matt for over a year. I can honestly say, if you want drum lessons, then he's your guy! He is professional, personable, highly knowledgeable, patient, explains things very well, and very reliable. I have had 3 guitar teachers, 1 voice teacher, and 1 drum teacher before Matt and out of all those teachers, he was by far the best. There is a big difference between someone who does it for a hobby or just a little extra income and some one who has a passion and Matt has the passion and he really cares about his students. I can be really bad about practicing but he hasn't given up on me and is always encouraging. From my past experiences with teachers, a teacher that believes in you is a very important element in teaching, Matt has that element. If you want the best, I mean really the best you can find, then go with Matt. You will NOT regret it and nor will your child."

"Outstanding Drum Instructor

Casey has been instructing our 9-year old son for over a year. He is an outstanding drum instructor and I highly recommend him. Casey goes above and beyond as an instructor and his passion for music AND teaching is always evident. Casey connected with our son by taking the time and effort to get to know him to understand how he learns and what he likes. He adapts his approach to ensure our son is having fun while learning. Best of all, the results are tangible ... our son enjoys his lessons, looks forward to practicing, and has learned how to play and read music. I would not hesitate in the least in hiring Casey as an instructor."

5 Resources for Finding Drum Tutorials Online

Playing the drums can be a ton of fun - and it’s certainly a popular instrument to learn, as is clear by the number of drum tutorials you can find online. Like anything else on the Internet, however, you really have to be careful about the sources you’re learning from. It's far too easy to learn things incorrectly, and some bad habits can be very difficult to break! When it comes to drum techniques like your grip, it can be particularly detrimental to learn incorrectly, and may even lead to …
