Mr. Ray J is a great teacher with patience. My 13yrs old boy is an international student who doesn’t speak English very well and
only had chance to have 6 hours class during our trip to US. But my boy likes Mr. Ray’s class very much, we hope to come back to DC and learn from Ray again.

Raycurt was very flexible in his planning, charming in person and very good (and patient!) with my six-year-old would-be drummer.
If you want to really rock on the drums I can get you started. I have MANY years of playing, performing, and teaching experience. Want to learn to play your favorite songs? And hopefully develope your own style! Let's rock!
I have been playing drums for over 47 years. For 16 years I played and performed professionally with my band Black Widow USA. We toured the US several times in support of our two internationally released CDs. For about 30 years of my time behind a drum set I had given drum lessons on and off. But because of my super strong passion for the drums and my desire to share my knowledge of the instrument I decided to start teaching on a more regular basis about four years ago. Several of my first regular students have now gone on to do very well themselves. Drumming in bands of their own. Although I can teach most styles of drumming I have been a die hard rock and roller most of my life. With my main influences on the instrument being Carmine Appice, Don Brewer from Grand Funk, John Bonham, Ian Paice from Deep Purple and for double bass Tommy Al
dridge. So I really specialize in the old rock and roll, classic rock, hard rock and metal from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, all the way up to today's rock, metal and pop music. I believe my years of experience are valuable in relating to each students musical interests ,desires and accomplishments on the drums. After my original band Black Widow decided to go on a long break several years ago I was offered a drumming position in a local classic rock and metal cover band. So besides teaching I have continued to satisfy my love for playing drums and performing with that band. Which gigs out on a regular monthly bases. *** Lesson Details *** I make sure that I find out from the get go what each and every new student likes musically and what they want to learn and how far they want to go on the drums. Then I try to tailor all the lessons to each students interests and abilities. Making sure that it's fun for them in the process. This can't be work or a chore or they won't stick with it. But I will say I do believe that every beginning student who has NEVER sat behind a kit before should know and start with the fundamentals ( the building blocks so to speak) of drumming such as holding the sticks, proper stick control and technique, and how to execute some important basic rudiments and keep good time. Also I think learning to read some drum notation is important so you know and understand what you are playing when you play it, but can teach by ear also. I can also teach double bass technique if a student is interested in that.
*** Studio Equipment *** Works space w/two drum sets, one double-bass and one single. Instruction material (books, CDs, videos). Seating for parents.
*** Travel Equipment *** If necessary to travel to a students home, they should have a drum kit there or at least a practice pad to get started on. I will bring sticks, a metronome if needed and the necessary instruction books for the lessons. Also willing to travel to a students home if they are just getting started and need help setting up their kit or need help tuning the drums.
*** Specialties *** Mostly specialize in beginner to intermediate ages 7 and up teaching rock ( which includes old rock and roll from the 50's, blues), classic rock ( 60's and 70's) , hard rock and metal from the 80's all the way up to today's rock, pop and metal music. Believe it or not, it's all tied together. Let me show and teach you how.
Tom is a great instructor! Cam is learning so much and making great progress on the drums!

This is our first Drum instructor and we are thrilled with Thomas. He is patient, kind, and enthusiastic about teaching. His approach is positive in nature, meeting the student where they are at, takes their interest as the lead, and starts teaching there. My 11 year old son really likes him too! We go to our 4th lesson this afternoon.

These lessons were great. Regarding drums, I was an absolute beginner, and Tommy's lessons turned out to be an excellent jump-start. I used to play keyboards and guitars before, and I enjoy picking up by ear rather than reading notation, so I really liked informal and 'non-notational' way the lessons went. There was no hard notation drill, and yet Tommy had covered most rudiments, basic techniques, and patterns needed to rock in about 10 lessons. I'd recommend this for anyone who doesn't know how to hold sticks but want to get introduced into rock drumming.
Whether hand percussion or on a full drum set I can help you develop your rudiments in a fun way to the songs you love
My name is Aleksis B., but many of my students know me as Mr. B. I am a professional instructor and performing musician who combines a love of music with a desire to help others who want to achieve their highest musical potential. I try to make that passion show in everything I do.
My education includes classical voice training with Michele Howard Hansen, an opera singer that often performs at the Kennedy Center. I studied piano with Geoffrey Chappell, who writes for Jazz Times. I also received compositional training on multiple instruments from Stanley Cowell, who recorded and performed with legends like Miles Davis.
I have been performing professionally since 1992. I studied education in college and did my student teaching in a music class at Goshen Elementary School in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
I have been teaching music pr
ofessionally now for over twenty years. Some students want to take a few lessons to see if it is something they will enjoy, others have worked with me for over a decade. I have mentored several students who have gone on to professional careers. I have experienced a lot of success teaching young children and those with special needs. I have been blessed with a tremendous amount of patience and truly enjoy teaching anyone who wants to learn.
Whatever your goals or abilities, I look forward to working with you!
*** Lesson Details *** Experience fun based lessons as my teaching approach is relaxed and inspirational. I enjoy working with all ages, adjusting my teaching methods to accommodate your learning style and abilities. Learn to play the music you love! You learn best when you enjoy what you are playing, I can help you play along with your favorites or even write your own songs. I always ask my students at the beginning of a lesson "What would you like to do today?" Then structure the lesson accordingly into a routine that the student can practice on their own. Generally the time is divided into warm ups, learning new material, then picking a fun song the student choses. Whether your interest is Classical, Jazz, Rock, Pop music, etc... I'm here help you reach your goals so let's make your dreams come true with music together!
*** Travel Equipment *** Books, Guitar, music stand, metronome, picks, tuner, page clips, capo, media player, laptop, Keyboard (on request), and recording equipment (on request)
*** Specialties *** With Voice I specialize in helping people prepare for auditions such as American Idol. I have students who simply want to be karaoke stars. I have several professional singers that hire me as a voice coach and producer for recording sessions. I have taught children as young as 2 and those that retired with a lifelong dream to sing. Though my training is classical, I can teach Jazz, Pop, Rock, Rap, R&B, etc...whatever is fun for the student. I highly recommend learning to read music but I do not push it unless parents want their child to.
With Piano I can teach traditionally from Alfred and Bastien Piano Courses depending if they are auditory or visual learners. For Kinesthetic learners I use Hanon scale exercises and Rothman Rhythm Exercises. For those that want to learn notation I introduce classical and Jazz composers unless there is a popular artist/band/movie theme etc...that they would like to learn. However I do not push students to read music unless their parents would prefer it. I tend to keep more students that want to learn to play by ear especially adults by using rhythm training and music theory exercises and then applying them to songs they love. For piano I haven't had much success with children younger than 3. I also have a lot experience working with special needs children.
For Guitar I teach Classical, Acoustic, and Electric all styles and genres. I encourage sight reading but don't mind using tabs. I use more exercises with these students, since the first month students have a hard time making a sound. I try to make the lessons fun by having students strum chords along with songs they chose. I teach lead and rhythm even songwriting and composition. Job satisfaction for me is seeing my students leave a lesson with a smile on their face so I make sure to be a fun based teacher that doesn't give the student a hard time about not practicing.
For Recording and Performance I use the knowledge I gained doing Pro Audio Sales for Guitar Center from 2000-2002 to help clients build their own home studio. I have lots of producers and engineers I work with on a regular basis to produce broadcast quality audio and video recordings and help my students use their lessons and pre-production for those opportunities. I can teach Garage Band or Pro Tools classes on navigating the software and utilizing all the commands. I can also teach room acoustics and using the right microphone and how to position them with the right equipment and the right acoustics to get the best possible tone that they are looking for. I can also teach editing, mixing, looping, sampling, midi, and mastering so that the student can eventually work on their own writing, performing, and recording their music.
Everything you ever wanted to know about the drums! Lesson plans are custom made for your individual goals!
Musically and personally, I strongly feel that diversity and openness are key in a person's development: when we move outside of our comfort zone and embrace the unknown, we are better able to grow as musicians (and human beings). As a performer, I feel that performing with musicians of different backgrounds is a constant source of inspiration and engaging music. As an educator, I emphasize the role of music as a form of expression and its parallel to verbal language. As children, we learn words and sentences so that we can accurately and gracefully express ourselves and, in this sense, music is no different. I encourage students to enjoy the music-making process and to view mechanics as a means to an end.
I have been dedicated to the drums since the age of 9 and since then I have been honing and applying those skills to musical groups
of all types, from rock and pop to big band to world music to orchestral to small combos and everything in between. In 2007, I embarked on a two and a half year gig with Princess Cruises as a show band drummer, and traveled the world on some of the world's most modern ships while performing on stage over 1000 times. From 2011 to 2013 I was the touring drummer for renowned Celtic/Gypsy/Americana band SCYTHIAN, a band which tours extensively and is known for their energetic live show. Other groups I have recently recorded and toured with include "Yall-ternative" fan favorites Mr. Fuzzy & The Barbarian and modern funk band The Royal Noise. In 2014 I relocated to College Park, MD and I love it!
*** Lesson Details *** When we work together we will split lessons between the necessary mechanical aspects of the instrument and the more creative and spontaneous elements. At the beginning, I emphasize a relaxed technique and an efficiency of motion. Once this is established, we will explore the instrument through improvisation and other creativity exercises. Although drumming can be very technical, I never lose sight of the importance of groove, expression, and having fun while playing.
*** Studio Equipment *** My studio is complete with 2 drums sets, practice pads, computers, hand percussion instruments, and other instruments for accompaniment.
*** Specialties *** I try to split lessons between the technical elements of drumming and the more creative aspects of the instrument. I feel that you can't have one without the other and teachers need to be mindful not to lean too much to one side. I also strive to give the students practical examples in their style of interest and encourage them to apply what they learn to actual musical situations as much as possible. I have had experience in pop/rock, jazz, show music, and many traditional world-music styles.
From the first lesson, Andrew has been a consummate professional. Each lesson he brings in something new, while making sure that everything we've covered in the past is still ingrained through repetition. Having Andrew as an instructor has opened my eyes to the many facets of drumming, and I have taken skills/techniques with me that will last forever. The feedback does not stop after each lesson, Andrew is available all the time for any questions I may have during the week if I am stumped while practicing. His schedule is flexible with mine, and he is willing to bring in music that I want to personally learn. The lessons are the right balance of fun and teaching, and his studio promotes a learning environment that is not intimidating to let loose if you're a beginner like me.
I'd recommend Andrew to anyone looking to expand their skill set, the lessons have been a great experience.

Keith is great! My nearly 6 year old son has only been seeing Keith for a few weeks, but he’s already learned so much. Keith is everything you want in a teacher - he’s funny, patient and has a really great way of explaining drumming concepts is such a way that even a student as young as my son can grasp. Even my son has said Keith is a great teacher!

Keith is a great teacher! He gives excellent technical instruction and makes it a lot of fun. Our son loves his lessons with Keith!
Singing is my life! I trained classically from 4/1972 - 4/83, then continued concentrated self study for 5 years. I sang for Voice of America and National Geographic Explorer specials before becoming voice coach for the MD Renaissance Festival. I have sung professionally since '83 and have taught voice since '86. Traditional methods are not enough to keep you singing healthily and successfully into your old age! At 68, I still tour and can sing infinitely without amplification. I want that for every student!
We will develop solid time, technique, reading, and rudiments. To foster musicality we will focus on critical listening . We will focus on effective practicing to maximize our efforts. We will learn to apply rudiments and stickings around the drums for interesting and dynamic fills. We will play together to focus on listening and ensemble skills. We also have the ability to record our lessons for later review.
In a fun and engaging atmosphere we will develop the tools of musicality. I'm as comfortable with an absolute beginner as an advanced student.
I've been a professional drummer and keyboardist for 17 years. The last 13 of these have been touring with Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus. I've performed on cruise ships, in clubs and bars, and in concert halls.
As a drummer I'm well versed in Jazz, Rock, Latin, Funk, and Orchestral/Band Percussion. We will focus on solid time, technique, and musicality.
On the piano we develop solid fundamentals through reading and technical exercises, a grounding in theory, and an understanding of musical structure. You will learn to play from a fake book, play with a band, and improvise. I will also equip you with the tools to write your own music.
Happy to teach students both drums
and piano. We can do this as a split one hour lesson, or alternate weeks. We will also work on ensemble playing by playing together.

"David is a phenominal drum teacher for my 15y old daughter. She started with David's drum private lessons 4years ago from scratch and has made tremendous
progress since then. She was able to perform at Merkin Music hall with drum solo. David teaches not only the drum techniques, but also music appreciation, learning strategies. As a parent, I also benefit from his teaching philosophy. He is such a wonderful teach and we feel lucky we have him as my daughter's teacher."
"Keith John has gone above and beyond the call of duty for a drum teacher. Over several years of taking his lessons I have noticed an incredible change in
my playing. He encourages his students to follow their passion for music and tells amazing stories about his life as a professional musician. I highly recommend taking lessons from him: he is incredibly knowledgeable and his words of encouragement have everlasting worth."
"I owe Ben a lot. I spent about a month taking lessons with Ben to prep for an audition for a university jazz program (I had zero experience playing jazz b
efore this). Ben was one of the best music teachers I have ever had: he managed to get me prepared for my audition in just a few short weeks (I got into the program and had an incredible experience), and, perhaps more importantly, he taught me basic principles about jazz and jazz drumming that I think about constantly - not only when I am playing, but when I’m listening to jazz (which is most of the day, thanks to all the great recommendations from Ben). Ben is also an awesome dude, and has been described to me by random jazz dudes at FatCat as one of the “best drummers in New York right now.” If you’re looking for a drum teacher, Ben is without a doubt the best choice out there."
"Murray is great instructor implementing the lesson along with fun... Couldn't aak for a better learning situation, benefiting from a top shelf craft. Hi

"I was lucky to randomly sign-up for a drum course & meet Alexa!! She's been 1 of two favorite teaches in life & will forever remain a friend. She respect
s a student's musical interests while teaching from a place of support & serious devotion to her work. She encouraged my learning by letting me freely explore what I was musically curious about and had the depth of expertise to encourage my direction. From first lessons, through suggesting I find a band, attending my live performances, encouraging special summer workshops, and inviting me to her performances, Alexa is devotion supported me through years of maturing into a credible drummer. She's not only a supportive expert in her field, but a guide to what it means to become a drummer from encouraging action/performance as an integral part of learning this instrument. I am off to college in the fall, majoring in music, focused on drums and guitar. Thank you Alexa!!!"
"Casey is amazing! During our lessons, not only did he provide me with the fundamentals for being a skilled drummer but also perfectly balanced challenging
me while allowing me to express myself creatively. He is definitely the best!"
"Andy's got a gift. I've known him for years and we interact frequently due to my role as CEO of a small record company. There's something about him and hi
s music that's hard to describe; kind of a "lightning in a bottle" thing. But he shares the gift so well, and everyone who spends time with him seem to walk away happy."
