I am a Music EC-12 Certified Educator with a degree from The University of St. Thomas and a Masters of Music Education from Texas Christian University.

My previous career roles include being Children's Choir Director for All Saints Catholic School (2015-16), instructor at Cool Cats, General Music Educator for Stafford Elementary School in Stafford Municipal School District (2011-15), and my current General Music position in Irving ISD. My education experience covers many schools and programs in the Houston area, including various HISD schools as well as working for the University of St. Thomas Music Preparatory school as vocal, ukulele, bass guitar, music history/theory, and piano instructor.

My background in music is mostly vocal, working with choirs and ensembles my entire life. I have al

*** Lesson Details ***
The music lessons will consist of a concise and strong education of their instrument as well as essential theory and history. I develop individual lesson plans for each student and subject, working on formative goals and objectives to work towards for every lesson and throughout the year. I look forward to being able to help students accomplish and enjoy their instrument, utilizing their interests and genres with a variety of texts and literature at many levels, looking to always expand my own collection to meet the needs of the students. I am comfortable with providing digital and paper materials as well as providing recordings and video studying resources. I know in my heart and mind that I have something to offer to any student at any level in my studio, and, I am equally as passionate about providing an honest atmosphere for evaluation and positive criticism. With every lesson I always encourage brief reflection over the practice, study, and instruction, responding to every critical juncture that comes along the way. *** Studio and Resources ***
I have the necessary tools to operate in and out of my studio. Within my workplace I always have my electric keyboard, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, music library, printer/scanner, recording equipment, full sound system with mixer amp, guitar amp, microphone and stand, tuner, music stands, iPad stand, and comfortable space and seating. I also have expanded my studio capabilities that is an entirely digitized database and curriculum.
I expect for the students to provide their own instrument so that they are able to practice at home. I operate on MAC OS and IPad systems that maximize the technological uses of my in home studio.
Be prepared to learn more than you ever anticipated as I provide many resources. I also push for supplemental music instruction within the lessons, adding basic training and music learning skills needed for accompaniment instruments such as the acoustic guitar, ukulele, and piano which allow for students to have a stronger understanding of their music.

I asked my daughter to compare Robert to her old teacher on a scale of 1 to 5, she said 10, because she learned twice as much in one session than she did in 5 lessons with her old instructor!

I have been teaching this subject for over 16 years. There is no specific curriculum as each student will come to lessons with their own unique skills, needs, and goals. Lessons are tailored to those specifics. It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either notated or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study. Lessons are a minimum of 60 minutes once per week.

About Troy
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.

• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.

• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.

• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

So far, I look forward to each lesson! Troy is very kind, yet very helpful and has helped me target on my personal goals with opera while also learning more each time! I highly recommend him. It doesn't matter if you have no experience in voice or only experience in voice ( as my experience is theatre and musical theatre), he is patient in helping you achieve the goals set. I cannot wait to continue lessons with him!

*** Lesson Details ***
In a one hour lesson, we will spend twenty five minutes on vocal exercises designed to teach support and placement. Having performed leads on and Off Broadway, I know that without good technique you can't do eight shows a week, do back to back sets in a nightclub or cabaret or tour as a pop or rock singer. The second half of the lesson is spent on songs. As an acting as well as vocal coach, I focus on dramatics as well as musical interpretation. A singer must be connected to the words as well as the music. I hope to teach you to love singing as much as I do.

Mary is a lively, voluble person with enormous experience particularly in musical theater who enjoys working with students.
Initially and as the student moves along, Mary assesses talent and abilities and then continues to periodically reassess the learning in a manner that never ceases to amaze me. I have been working with Mary for six months and found her evaluations of my strengths and what I need to work on to be spot on every time.
What I esteem most is Mary's technical acumen, the techniques she learned from her teachers and mentors and her experience as a performer. Her keen ear and eye immediately pick out every nuance being sung that needs work. She answers questions about where "to go" in throat, mouth, tongue, torso, etc., demonstrating how to correctly produce the sounds, tones, and supported breathing in question. Voice teachers, of course, are supposed to do this. Mary does this superbly.
If you are seeking a teacher who knows her technique, especially in musical theater, I highly recommend Mary.

Hi Mary,
In my opinion, our session last night wasn't productive. My opinion is, you weren't really interested in teaching me. Out of the 60 minute session. I only did about 3 to 5 minutes of exercises. You spent 55 minutes talking about your past and present students, professional actors you know, show business, acting techniques and your accomplishments. You did talk about about the script that i would read and the emotion behind it, but that lead into more about your students and professional actors you know. it took you 30 minutes in your office to find that script, (which should have been done a head of time) then we went downstairs and another 25 minutes of talking before i could read it to you.

Towards the end when i finally spoke up about so much time being passed and nothing being done. You said you needed to see my personality so you can know where to start with me. That made no sense to me, how are you seeing my personality if you are the one mostly talking about your accomplishments and who you know and what you've done?
Why not pick a point and start there and see what my weak and strong points are? You also asked me the same questions you asked me on the phone, have you ever taken lessons before, why do you want to act, what do you do for work which to me just consumed more time.

What i found surprising and discouraging was when you asked me why would I take acting classes up here when there are some of the best acting schools in the world just an hour away in New York City? I wish you had said that to me over the phone before our meeting, I would reconsider taking lessons from you and just spend the extra money and go down to the city. If i were an instructor i would be grateful for anyone who sacrificed their time and money to come see me, and never ask why they chose me when there is better not that far away. With that said I have decided to cancel my remaining lessons with you please do not bill me any further.

I went into banjo lessons not knowing if I could master the instrument or not, being nearly 70 years old. While by no means a master (and never going to be), I have learned so much from Sam and he has shown such patience with me. I often leave my lessons wondering how he ever puts up with me - but he does. His encourgement, laid-back style, expertise and knowledge of music (plus theory) and the banjo is impressive. His good nature makes my lessons so much more pleasant. I would say Sam is a a great teacher for both a beginner or an accomplished musician or in between. He likes to talk and demonstrate (nice and slowly if requested) so I would recommend hour-long lessons at first.

Emphasis on basic music theory knowledge and heavy emphasis on transcribing and learning songs.

The absolute best way to become a competent songwriter is by listening to and learning other artist's music. By listening, you discover what elements you want in your own music and by learning (with a basic understanding of music theory), you discover how to put those elements into your own music.

Some topics I like to go over in a given songwriting lesson are as follows:

-Chord progressions and use of "color" chords
-Note choice and how to decide what note to sing/play
-Dynamics (basically intensity of the sections)
-Instrumentation (what instruments are playing what)
-Melodic phrasing (how you string notes together to make your musical "sentence")

About Christian
My name is Christian L. and I am a 28 year old guitar/music instructor in the Orlando area. My interest in guitar began when I was 12 years old and blossomed into a full time obsession about 3 years later when I started playing small gigs as a solo guitarist playing simple jazz and classical pieces for small art clubs and events. Alongside gigging, I also began teaching guitar, ear training, and music theory when I turned 18 and have been teaching full time ever since. During that time I also spent 4 years in music school for classical guitar. Currently I spend my time teaching, recording, and performing various styles including rock, jazz, pop, hip-hop, musical theater, metal, and country.

Throughout the 8 years I have been an instructor I believe I have refined my teaching style to be as versatile as possible to accommodate any learn
ing style a student may have. I am capable of teaching all styles of guitar at any skill level with an emphasis on ear training and general knowledge of guitar techniques.

Slight disclaimer in regards to lesson length, price, and student interest:

Over the past year or so I have tried a new teaching structure that I find to be quite rewarding for myself and the students I have had. My lessons do not have a maximum time limit, meaning a lesson could go for 2 hours, if that is what the student wanted, for the same price as a 45 min lesson.

This may sound strange in that I would be losing out on a large amount of potential money but the simple answer is this: I love music and guitar as well as teaching music and guitar. If we are in the middle of a great topic that you, the student, is really interested in, there is no way that I am simply going to stop talking about it when the "timer" stops and there is no way I am going to charge you more for getting into a topic you want to learn.

I find that students who spend more time in the lessons tend to become more interested in guitar and thus, better at playing. I do have to instill a minimum time limit of 45 mins however, any less is honestly just not enough time to get anything worth while accomplished.

One last thing, music and guitar have made up the majority of my daily routine for the past 10 or so years and have literally paid for everything that I currently own as I have never had any other type of job. What this means is that I take the craft very seriously and I project that in the lessons. Basically, if you are genuinely interested in learning guitar and music at any skill level, I will show you everything I possibly can to let you meet your goals. However, if you do not take it seriously, as in you don't pick up or even think about the guitar except for lesson days, the lessons may quickly feel pointless.

Develop skills and healthy habits to feed your song life. Writing songs is sort of like breathing and eating to me. I am more than happy to help a student on their journey towards authentic self-expression! Sessions are tailored to the student's individual goals and may include instrument instruction if needed (Guitar, Bass, Ukulele, Accordion and/or Voice).

About Brittany
My name is Britt. I am a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist. I love music with all my heart, and I want you to love it too! I have been playing and writing for seventeen years and have lots of experience performing solo and with bands as a singer, guitarist and writer. I want my students to have fun with music, express themselves, pursue their individual goals and become competent musicians.

I have completed extensive coursework in music theory, history and performance and also have a dual bachelor's degree in studio art and cultural anthropology. I am a life long learner, currently studying guitar theory and guitarmaking. I sing in a women's a cappella quartet. In my own music making, I do not shy away from melting expressive platforms together.
