You've got to walk before you can run, so I focus on the basics. But, the basics can be a lot of fun! Especially once we start to apply them to your favorite songs, and being creative with them - that's kind of what it's all about!

About Mike

Learning to play an instrument is a mixture of a lot of fun, and a lot of hard work. My strength is finding what will inspire my students to WANT to put in those difficult hours of practice, and then showing them how to apply what they have learned in a creative way, so that they experience the fu

Amazing, patient really informative instructor and just a great guy. Highly recommend.

Mike was really the best instructor I could have asked for. Knowledgeable, patient, and best of all, chill when he needed to be. I was just picking up the drums for a high school band I was in at the time, and he was more than willing to help me learn whatever dumb song me or my band had decided sounded cool at the time. At the same time, he showed me a lot of really excellent practice techniques, directed me to some solid literature for different rhythms to work on, and would sit with me through a whole hour of my relentless mistakes like it was nothing. More than a good instructor, he's a really cool guy! He never missed a beat!

Jean Pierre has been an amazing teacher for my son, who is learning the drums. We have weekly lessons scheduled and Jean Pierre is always on time and ready to begin the lesson. He has vast knowledge of drums and other percussion instruments and is able to teach with patience and approachability when Xander has questions. We were first worried about having an online drum teacher (Jean Pierre lives in Malta). But it has been flawless as we have used the take lessons application to connect and set up a stand by the drum set so Jean Pierre can see Xander's drumming. We are very happy with Jean Pierre as Xander's teacher and would recommend him to other students.

This is the first lesson I got to listen to of my son working with Nathan. Usually I'm not home from work. I am really impressed with how much he was able to help my son improve so quickly. I wish we had started this much sooner.

Do you have two left arms and two left feet (or two rights of each if you're left-handed), and have no idea how to coordinate behind your drumset?

Do you want to be able to accurately listen to a song and "play it" on your steering wheel as you drive?

Do you constantly have trouble maintaining speed, slowing down or speeding up for no reason?

How about wanting to go all-out and learning those crazy double-bass parts and snare rolls popular in today's extreme metal?

I require a practice pad for lessons to learn rudiments and coordination techniques, even if it's just a mouse pad taped to a heavy book to start with. If you continue taking lessons, I can recommend the best practice pad for you.

I typically will teach and write drums using a combination of tablature and standard sheet music. Tablature a simple set of lines and X marks that are much easier to read, and once learned will instantly give you access to thousands of songs.

You'll learn how to keep time with ...

"Taking drum lessons with Henri has improved my sound incredibly. Henri does more then improve my chops technically, Henri has taught me how to play musically. Henri set me free on the drums, teaching me how to breathe while I play and to hit with confidence. My friends and family have been commenting on how great I sound on the drums lately. It is awesome. I highly recommend taking drum lessons with Henri."

"My son learned a tremendous amount from lessons with Steve

My son took lessons from Steve, in an Aurora music store, for almost four years before Steve left that establishment. Steve had my 8 year old playing on a drum kit within 3 months of beginning lessons (which may not be typical) but it furthered my son's drive to improve. My son was in a band by the age of 10, which produced their own CD and garnered many accolades at local competitions (winning just about every one they entered) and performed at local venues, including our town's summer festival for four years in a row (for which they were paid to perform). I believe that every successful band has a great drummer keeping time. As the rest of the band aged into college, my son continues to play the drum on snare line in marching band at his high school, a position which he earned as a Freshman (which is not typical), but which, we believe, the skill set he learned from lessons with Steve afforded him. He also entered high school in the Symphonic Band (mid level band) as a Freshman and was moved to the Wind Ensemble (top level band) as a Sophomore. Steve worked with him in several aspects of drumming, from rudiments, to school work (middle school jazz band) and pop music, on the drum kit. Steve is serious about teaching and expects students to practice and come prepared to their lessons. Practice is the only thing that makes them improve! If your child is (or you are) serious about learning to play the drums, Steve would be a great teacher to have."
