Drum Lessons in Orlando

By John O. -

Hello everyone. My name is John and I teach drum lessons here in beautiful Orlando, Florida. I teach at a professional music studio in Casselberry where I have a professional drum set for students. I have a stereo system that allows for playing along to music to learn how to play the different grooves and fills properly. For interested students who live in East Orlando, I will travel to your home for drum lessons.

I am very passionate about playing the drums and teaching drum lessons in Orlando. I specialize in working with beginners who do not even know how to hold the drumsticks properly and helping them to learn their very first drum beat. I teach using an exciting program that shows students how to play many different beats and fills, play with proper technique, and learn how to read drum music. My teaching program is structured but also flexible. I encourage all of my students to tell me who their favorite bands are so they can learn to play along to their favorite music.

I have been playing the drum set for over thirty years. I played in the symphonic band in junior high and high school. I have played in one rock band and am currently playing in my third Christian rock band. This real world experience of playing with different musicians in many different settings allows me to skillfully demonstrate what works well when playing live.

I employ multimedia as a valuable tool in the learning process. Using different DVD’s allows for students to have a well rounded, diverse curriculum that makes learning to play a fun and rewarding experience. I encourage full exploration on the drum kit. I tell my students that instead of thinking outside the box, with drumming there is no box.

Whether you have dreams of jamming with a rock band, playing jazz in clubs, or play in church, I can help you to achieve your musical goals. If you are considering drum lessons in Orlando, please contact me to learn how to “Groove With Passion.”

Most recently, my drumming can be heard on multi-platinum selling recording artist Mark Slaughter's solo CD, "Reflections in a Rear View Mirror" which was released in March of this year. In additional to acoustic drumming, I have extensive experience with:
- midi programming (Toontrack Superior Drummer)
- drum set recording (Pro Tools, Cubase, Reaper)

About Mark
Most recently, Mark's drumming can be heard on multi-platinum selling recording artist Mark Slaughter's solo CD, 'Reflections in a Rear View Mirror.'

In addition to being a full-time working drummer, Mark is guiding veteran and up & coming drummers with their musical careers both privately and at Nevada Music Academy (March 2014 to present).

Mark is currently accepting serious-minded adult students for in-home or online lessons. Drum set students are required to have access to a drum set; snare drum students are required to have a snare drum or practice pad.

*****BACKGROUND*****

With inspiration from a music-infused household, Mark began playing drums at the age of eight, shortly after relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada. Within a few short years he was performing with various school bands (stage, jazz, orchestra, marching) and o
riginal rock bands formed with musicians from the local music scene.

Mark studied classical and rudimental snare drum performance at the Murray Spivack School for Snare Drum and funk, jazz, rock and Latin drumming under the tutelage of Irv Kluger, Chuck Silverman and Richie “Gajate” Garcia.

Mark’s first big break came in 1986 when he toured with the legendary Hollywood based hard-rock band Masque, which included the famous circuit clubs in Los Angeles supporting such artists as Warrant and Poison. Shortly after, Mark spent two years performing and recording with MTV favorites D.R. Starr and the M.D.’s, securing his place as one of Los Angeles’ “go to” drummers.

Drum lessons with Mark are informative, results-driven and loud at times! “Together, you and I will develop an ‘Individualized Learning Program’ designed just for you,” says Mark. “We’ll work at your level and at your pace – and we’ll have fun doing it!” Mark has been working successfully with students as young as 5 years of age. Beginning students will be playing basic drum beats during their first lesson and playing along to songs within several lessons. Experienced students will further develop reading chops, grooves, fills and rudiments.

To date, Mark has recorded and performed with numerous rock acts and is active in the local music scene. In addition, Mark is a two-time Las Vegas Rock Hall of Fame inductee.

Mark rocks!

Mark’s incredible skill as a drummer is only matched by his abilities as a teacher. In just a short time with Mark’s instruction, I have made vast improvements in my drumming. At my first lesson with Mark, he determined my skill level and what I sought to achieve with my lessons. Almost immediately, the fundamentals Mark showed me were translating into my drumming with my band. Mark has opened doors in my playing that I didn’t know existed. Mark is incredibly patient and really cares about ensuring I receive significant benefit from my lessons. Mark really goes out of his way to make sure I fully grasp everything he shows me. I would highly recommend Mark for anyone who wants to learn from a true master at his craft and from a teacher who takes pride in his students and his teaching. Thank you Mark!!

Mark Review

I have had many different types of music teachers through out my life and Mark is by far the best. He is very serious about helping his students do what they want to do. I had specific goals I wanted to accomplish. Mark took my goals seriously and did what he could to help me understand the techniques to be a good drummer. He broke things down in to little steps that helped me to practice on my own and figure specific drum patterns out, He gave me the tools to improve myself as a musician, Mark did not have to but he chose to put a lot of his own time in to teaching me what I wanted to learn He obviously cares about his students and takes them seriously. I highly recommend him to any future students

About Rene
Knowing at the age of 5 that music was my life, by being brought up surrounded by praise music and gospel, my early exposure to music helped me to find every Instrument and style just my thing! I wanted to play everything and learn all aspects of music. I started with singing in the children's choir and then developed into piano and music theory. At the age of 12 I began to learn classical guitar, and at 15 took on various styles like Flamenco, Jazz and Rock. I graduated from High School having played in the school band achieving recognition In national Institutions Like IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) and state band finals. I was also composing from a very early age, and at 18 released my first album (self-titled) which can still be heard and purchased today through various music outlets, since i have released over 15
albums with various ensembles and bands. In college I already knew from my previous experience that I wanted to teach and pass on the joy that music brought to my life. I studied Music Theory and Jazz and finished my degree in Music Education. I have been teaching all in all for about 14 yrs. And I have enjoyed every minute I have spent with my students learning as much from them, as them from me. I am looking forward to meeting new and eager students who really want to bring their inner music out to share with the rest of us music aficionados! and develop their skills to the peak of their abilities.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching method ranges depending on the student. I believe in my experience that everyone learns differently, therefore everyone develops at their own pace. I try to find key strengths in each student and expose this to their advantage, using their abilities to further develop their skills, this method has shown the most promising results and students usually find themselves playing and performing just a couple of months after their first lessons. Part of my method involves a lot of performance and recital opportunities to help break any fears and inhibitions a student may bring with them. Music is about sharing, so an early exposure to this method helps to strengthen and stabilize a core acceptance of a students style and path, giving them and those close to them a very clear picture of their development and achievements.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Has all instruments at both his home and college studio

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson material, song charts and a progression scale. I require student to have an Instrument and recommended technique literature.

*** Specialties ***
My classical training began in High School with Influences in Segovia, and Romero I studied classical for 4 yrs. and trained in Jazz and Improvisation with performances In Big Band and group ensemble. Also sang and played in the school gospel choir.

****Personal Statement*****

If you needed a reason

There is no question that music touches us instantly and activates images, emotions and memories that linger with us throughout our lives. As a casual listener or an obsessive music elitist, there are times in our lives when we get blown away by a sound so unique our entire body vibrates and resonates with the touch of something out of this world. I can honestly say when this happens to me I feel as close to a spiritual connection than anything I have experienced otherwise. I believe it is these exact events that have triggered my need to be completely involved in the making, performing and consuming of music. The creative process, to me, is the single obvious reason we exist in this world. We create and share, learn and interpret, build on previous ideas and inspire others to perfect upon this process. It is no doubt a very humbling experience to realize you are part of it all. During this process you come to realize how important you are as an Individual, how there is no other vessel like you in this world, nor has there ever been or ever will. You are here now and your voice, your talent, your gift is an instrument to the great choir of the human spirit. No one but you can relate this, a reason to be, to create, to give.

I can teach everything from how to hold the sticks and hit the drum using proper technique to reading drum charts and understanding notation, (and even some music theory if you like). I have experience playing multiple genres, including rock, jazz, and funk, and I have a wealth of drum books to draw from, from having taking lessons on and off from various teachers since age 10.

About Paul
I began taking drum lessons at a very early age and continued on and off with various teachers for the better part of twenty years. I will always be grateful to them for the knowledge and wisdom they imparted on me and for the positive influence they have had on my life, especially the ones with whom I really bonded and who were essentially mentors to me while I studied with them.

As a teacher, there is no better feeling than seeing a student make progress and knowing that you helped him or her along the way, while at the same time not taking the credit, as it is always the student who has the harder job, who must do the real work. I always feel tremendous satisfaction when a student masters a difficult rudimentary exercise for the first time, or is able to execute a challenging rhythm pattern on the drum set. The expression on their
faces often conveys pride over their achievement, and I can often sense a boost in their self-esteem. This is why I teach.

I began playing drums when I was around twelve years old, and played throughout grade school, high school and college, in school jazz bands and musical pit bands, as well as playing in many rock bands over the years. I began teaching drums shortly after graduating from college, eventually relocating to New York City, where I lived for 12 years and where I continued playing and teaching, as well as taking lessons on and off. I was very fortunate to study with Joe Morello - famous for his tenure with Dave Brubeck and especially on the classic recording "Take Five." I have also played on several recordings, toured throughout the Northeast and Midwest, and have performed at the South By Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, the Miami Music Festival, and have been overseas a few times for some European dates. Since moving to Orlando in late 2009, I played with a cover band, played drums and percussion in the orchestras for musical productions at community theaters, and currently play with a local Orlando rock band called the Cosmic Roots Collective.

To me, teaching drums is more than simply writing notes on a page of manuscript paper and having students practice and perform exercises. It is about connecting and showing them how expressing themselves musically can be one of the most fulfilling activities one can pursue. It is also about helping them really get in touch with their own sense of rhythm, the foundation of all music. When I take on new students, it is always my goal that I can help foster in them the same passion for and love of learning to play drums as the great teachers who taught me.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lesson plan will be based on the student's level and goals. If the student is a beginner, we will start off with basic hand technique, rudiments, reading, etc., before moving on to the drum set. Playing along with a metronome will also be a regular part of lessons and should be with practice as well.

At the drum set, I will give students exercises for developing coordination and independence. They will also learn to play basic beats for different music styles, e.g. rock, jazz, funk, latin, with a focus on execution, time and feel. I have a wide assortment of drum books spanning all levels from which we can work out of or use examples. I also ask my students what songs they want to learn to play on the drums so that together we can figure out the beats to them. I ultimately want them to be able to transcribe the beats to these songs themselves, as well as create their own beats.

I may also talk a little about the history of drumming and the pioneers of the instrument, and we may also listen to records and watch videos of some of the masters in action.

I also occasionally like to "jam" with my students. as I have a piano and a few guitars in my practice room and a modicum of ability on both instruments.

As far as expectations, I assume my students are taking lessons because they want to learn to play the drums. And, as with any learning endeavor, practicing is very important. That said, I won't demand they practice a certain number of hours per week, as they need to decide how much time they have or are willing to put into it, and I expect this will vary from student to student. I realize that everyone has his or her own aptitudes and situations, so we can work together to determine the appropriate pace and amount of material to cover per week. However, if it appears to me that the student has not practiced the lesson, or is not putting in the time necessary to make progress, I will politely point it out and ask how I can help.

I am laid back and very patient. I never want my students to feel pressured or anxious about coming to lessons; I always strive to create a comfortable and relaxed environment in which they can learn and have fun at the same time.

*** Studio Equipment ***
A designated music room with an electronic drum set (Roland V Drums), digital piano, and a couple of guitars and amplifiers

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring a practice pad or snare drum and sticks to the first lesson, if he or she is a beginner, although I prefer them to have these already if possible. After that, I expect the student to buy sticks, a pad and if necessary a stand to mount it, a metronome, music manuscript paper, and have a comfortable seat to sit on, if not a drum stool. If they are at the intermediate level and/or have already started on the drum set, then they need to have their own set in their home.

*** Specialties ***
Basic hand technique for beginners, eventually incorporating an extra limb, usually the bass drum first.

Rock and basic funk, jazz, and latin. Also basic musical notation. Ultimately, I would like the student to be able to transcribe the beats from some of their favorite songs, as well as write their own!

My name is Taylor and welcome to my teacher bio. I'm a passionate drummer/percussionist with a diverse teaching and performance background. I have a degree from The Cleveland Institute of Music in Timpani/Percussion where I studied mostly classical music. However, I have played and studied drum set for the last 15 years in addition to my classical studies. I'm always looking for new styles of music to immerse myself in!

As an educator, I have a diverse background. I have experience in the public school system teaching at The Cleveland School of the Arts, an alternative public school for artistically gifted students in the Cleveland, Ohio Metropolitan School District. Additionally, I am a drum/percussion instructor at Hunterdon Preparatory School, an alternative public School in Annandale, New Jersey. I have marching band

I'll get you playing the covers and musicians you LOVE! Even if you have no experience. If you like to dance, you'll LOVE to play drums. If you don't like to dance, well now you'll have something to do at parties ;)

Drumming is one of the most soulful, visceral forms of music. Parents, nowadays drumming doesn't have to make much of a ruckus or take up a whole room!

About Fred
I can help you find the joy in learning music! Gone are the days of the old, crusty, strict piano teacher with a ruler. I'm here to show you that the dream you have of playing piano, singing, drums, or producing is completely within your grasp. You just have to take a leap of faith.

I have spent my life living and breathing music. I began singing in middle school in choir and in college, have sung in Segerstrom Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Greek Theater all under the batons of well known maestros!

My father started teaching me piano as a kid, but I really dove into it in college, where I joined a band that is still together. We play reggae, and I can play almost any style, just ask!

I've always had a rhythm in my soul, but I started playing drums for my high school choir, after which I joined my school's
drum corps. My background in those hard corps basis (see what I did there?) has helped me develop a unique and tasteful style. I can show you the ropes and you'll be playing your favorite covers in no time!

Production is a very special skill to learn and I would recommend at least a little bit of it for ANY musician! Learning about song structure can help anyone appreciate music more and even make their own! A big part of modern producing is assembling previously created parts into your own creation. If you've ever been listening to the latest club beat and felt yourself hearing other ways the producer might have timed out the samples or rhythms... then you have the SPARK!

Music is the most important thing that makes us human and gives us our identity, confidence, and purpose. I hope you'll let me help you find that side of yourself!
