About Rachelle
Hello! My name is Rachelle and I'm a professional singer, songwriter and pianist from Victoria, BC, Canada. My background in music is a blend of Pop, Rock, Jazz Classical, Blues and R&B. I was recently featured in Keyboard Magazine’s November 2012 Issue as one of the 6 Best Keyboard Heroes to watch out for.
Some of my performance highlights have been opening up for Nelly Furtado in 2001 in our hometown Victoria BC, and again on her "Loose" tour in 2007 at Roger's Arena in Vancouver, BC for an audience of 15,000. I've taught for six years helping foster my student’s talents and reach their musical goals. Past students have attained lead roles in high school musicals, toured in professional
bands locally and internationally.
When it comes to teaching music a “cookie cutter" approach is never used. I understand everyone has a unique l
earning style and I try my best to cater my lessons around each student's individual needs and goals. I was fortunate enough to grow up in an incredibly musical household. My dad toured with Bryan Adams as his guitarist and my mom’s worked with heavy weights such as David Foster as a professional vocalist. I was mentored by some of the best in the music business since childhood. I started learning piano at the age of four and started recording vocals for radio commercials at the age of six. The experience I've acquired over the years from recording in world class studios and touring internationally I believe has given me invaluable insight to impart with my students. I’m very passionate about teaching. Whether you want to learn how to play your favorite song on the piano or polish your vocal skills to sing professionally on a big stage in front of a large crowd, I’m your gal!

*** Lesson Details ***
I understand that starting lessons can feel a bit scary and outside of ones comfort zone. It takes courage to try something new! I take pride in creating a fun, stress free learning environment, as I know it's incredibly important. I like to encourage having the best of both worlds when it comes to learning voice and piano. That means introducing some sight-reading as well as how to play freestyle, or without sheet music. What to expect upon your first lesson would be an easygoing assessment as well as something to take home and practice. I want to find out what your music tastes and background are and your personal goals, what you would like to get out of lessons. I tailor lessons around each student and their personal learning style.
Piano students: The following is an example of what students can expect to learn, proper technique, sight reading, chords and popular song progressions, how to develop a piece of music, rhythmic training, ear training, how to play their favorite song(s). I use a combo of music books, Alfred Series, Bastien and Dozen a Day for technique and finger exercises as well write out music for students too on the song they would like to learn. I make a list of songs you would like to learn and also suggest some too that I think you would like and can also further develop your piano playing skills.

Voice Lessons: I’m a firm believer that we can learn a lot from hearing ourselves back on recordings. We are our own toughest critic. Recording ourselves singing helps us hear where our strengths and weaknesses are. It might seem a little uncomfortable at first listening back, I know! However, it offers fresh perspective for us to able to take our voices to the next level. I record using an app on my iPhone or iPad and encourage my students to record as well. If they do not have a recording device I email the recording to them to study along with the notes and exercises they are given to work on. This enables the students to witness their personal progress from lesson to lesson! It’s a great learning tool!
The following is an example of what voice students can expect to learn: proper breathing techniques, how improve tone and extend their range, how to develop agility, pop riffs, and dynamic control, how to prepare for auditions, live shows and studio recording and much more!

What I expect from my students: To come to lessons with an open mind, a readiness to learn, to try new things and to apply what they learn each lesson to continue making weekly steady progress ☺ We only get out of something what we put into it right?

I like to be as flexible as possible, I understand that often times students have many other things going on in their lives whether it be sports, school or work etc. We go at a pace you feel comfortable with but enough where you feel you are getting a bit of a challenge each week to be growing. Let’s make some beautiful music together!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Yamaha Mox8 (88 weighted keys). Acoustic Guitar, Sound System, Allen & Heath Mixing board, SM58 Mic, Mic Stand, Music Stand, Shecter Electric Guitar, Pro Tools 9, Duet Apogee

Rachelle is extremely personable, knowledgeble, and communicative in her technique training. She is really helping me to unlearn all the bad habits that have naturally developed over the years, and I'm already more cognitive of my vocal projection. She's at the top of her game. Would highly recommend her to ANYONE in search of the best instructor.

A fantastic teacher

In just my first few lessons with Rachelle, I learned more about the anatomical aspect of singing than I had in 10 years of choir/singing. She put great emphasis on the technique and skill aspects, while still balancing it with emotional connection. Perhaps my favorite thing about Rachelle is that instead of giving you songs to practice or telling you exactly what kind of songs you need to be doing, she allows you to bring in any music that you like and allows you to pick the focus of your lessons (whether you want to work more on breath support or volume or tone quality etc.). She maintains a flexible, laid-back and supportive attitude and has been a wonderful help for me.

Rachelle is a great teacher!

I took lessons with Rachelle for about 2 years and I'm so glad I did. I have improved so much vocally as well as performance-wise. It was a lot of fun to be able to work on my own favorite songs instead of purely classical. I would definitely recommend taking lessons with Rachelle!

Weslie is great!

Weslie has helped me tremendously with music theory. She is really good at listening and figuring out specific areas that I needed help with. She even took time on the side outside of our lessons to listen to music examples I sent her and analyzed them for me. Weslie is patient and makes learning fun. Her teaching environment is comfortable and she's flexible with her schedule. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a teacher!

Weslie is a great mentor and teacher

Weslie has been able to open my eyes to what my voice really sounds like into the "musical world" in terms of technicality. While also been able to make me a better singer already. We have been working on one of my favorite songs, and there's so much I've learned from her in terms of playing the guitar and understanding how the chords are built and interfere into the overall senses of the song. I would recommend Welsie to any person that has passion in music and is willing to take the classes seriously in terms of a good learning pace and content, because I believe that she is one of the best out there in LA.

I teach refining your songs until they are "perfect"

About Mike
I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Some of my students have received college scholarships and won cash prizes for music contests. All of them had fun while learning and improving on their instruments.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very enthusiastic and can teach students how to read. If they do not want to read music, they can learn to play by ear. I can also show them where to put their fingers. During piano lessons, I often accompany students on guitar and suggest a scale for improvisation, so they can play the blues. During drum lessons, I often play bass so they can learn to groove.

*** Travel Equipment ***
They should have their own instrument and a music stand.

*** Spec
ialties ***
I specialize in jazz improvisation on piano and guitar.
I also teach recreational guitar and piano for adults, including classical and blues styles.
I coach bass players and drummers in playing stylistically correct grooves for jazz, rock and latin music.

Most excellent first guitar lesson to where we actually played a song together. I'm blown away. What fun! I only hope I can remember the chords when I practice on my own, and I look forward to my next lesson with Mike. I can already tell I'll be signing up for more lessons. Great teacher, and I can say that because I tried to learn some years ago with another instructor, and he made me feel like I'd just never get it and may as well give up. Mike erased all that negativity for me in 30 minutes. Thanks, Mike!

You will learn the basic of songwriting structure to explore your own thoughts and tell your story!

About Michelle
Hi

My name is Michelle and I LOVE singing and helping others learn to sing and bring out their own special voice!

I studied classical music since I was 11 years old and then went on to study Opera in College. This gave me a solid foundation for music and music theory but it wasn't where my heart was. Since my decision to leave Opera studies I have experienced many different musical incarnations. In my professional career as a musician and artist I have performed, written and recorded in many genres such as folk, blues, pop, indie and americana.

I believe there are no limits to what one can do if there is passion and excitement behind it! I have been in music a long time now with many ups and downs and still love (almost) every minute of it :) I truly enjoy teaching and watching my students grow and surprise themselves. I had the
most incredible teachers growing up, they supported me and help shape me as a artist and musician, I strive to do the same with my students. I genuinely care about each individual student I teach and want to help them achieve their highest potential!

*** Lesson Details ***
I approach each lesson catered to the individual. We all have different ways of learning. I studied classically as a chlid and went on to study Opera in University but I professional years have been spent doing a range of pop, blues, indie, folk and Americana. I have had many years in the music business and use that experience to help my students discover what they want to do with their voice. Are you an Artist? Do you just want to sing for fun? Are you an actor preparing a particular song for an audition? etc..

In all lessons we will focus on the connection of your breath. Basic warm up techniques, pitch control and full connection to the words you are singing. All music is telling a story and in my opinion that is one of the most crucial elements to a good singer is being able to successfully convey the story. And enjoying the process... its FUN!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Guitars, keyboard, ukulele, latest protools, vocal booth

***Specialties ***
I primarily teach popular music styles. I do have a background in Opera but I most of my students have been children, artist and actors that want to learn the fundamentals of proper singing techniques.

Everybody can write a song, right? Well mainly, yes, with some musical background, a song can be written.
When you're pushing for a certain level though, it can really help to have some tools to analyze both your composition and performance to hone the piece, the style, and the arrangement.
I have written or produced dozens of songs, many of which have been featured in major motion pictures or released in their own right putting me in a perfect position to help you with your work and share all my secrets!!

About Andrew
British born and Educated at London's prestigious Trinity College of Music and The Royal Academy of Music, my professional musical career has spanned over two decades to date. I have performed with world renowned acts such as Sia, Dave Stewart and Horace Andy, and have been a featured recording artist on many of the worlds most famous film scores while myself having authored or co-authored over 30 movie scores.
A Suzuki violin student since the age of 3, I added piano, guitar, singing and composition during my teenage years. The Suzuki method encourages advanced aural development from very early on and this has turned out to be my strongest suit. With my ear, I have impressed some of the most notable orchestrators, composers, directors and producers in London, Hollywood and the world over. In fact, it was these on the spot aural magic tr
icks that allowed me to impress the Hollywood composer that first invited me to Los Angeles to work on my first blockbuster. That opportunity led to many years of success in the industry and some notoriety.
I have always had a passion for teaching, sharing my knowledge with others and watching other people take immense pleasure in their own achievements. I have been told time and time again that I have a very special gift for teaching and I would very much like to share it with you, whether you want to learn an instrument, musicianship, ear training, composition, hone your vocal or mic skills or learn how to arrange an orchestral piece in just a few hours!
I look forward to talking to you about your specific needs and goals and having the opportunity to help you realize them in a fun friendly and authentic atmosphere.

Composition of tunes for any instrumentation, including vocals and lyrics.

About Zach
I have been teaching trumpet, music theory, jazz harmony, jazz piano, and music composition to students of all ages since late 2008. I work very well with young, beginning students as well, and can teach all levels.

I am a touring trumpet player currently working with SAINT MOTEL, and have experiences performing and touring all over the world. In addition to excellent musical education, I apply lessons I have learned from travel that I find truly help as an educational supplement.

Working at UCLA for my degree in music performance has taught me what it takes to be a good teacher, and I am patient, understanding, and believe there's no greater feeling than watching my students flourish. I like to take the time to get to know my students, and plan lessons around their individual needs, rather than plug them into a system set in ston
e. I have a routine I do, that I will start students with, but am very open to modification based on student needs/desires.

I perform jazz professionally in Los Angeles, and have spent time touring in playing in the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Macedonia, Canada, and have performed or led groups internationally at the Umbria Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Tuscia Jazz Festival, the Angel City Jazz Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival. You can hear my original compositions and playing on bandcamp or soundcloud.

My specialty is helping you write amazing melodies. I can coach lyrics too but that is not my biggest strength. I can help you learn how to put chords to your melodies and then how to convert your song into the style of your choice. I can then help guide you on making a demo of your song.

About Howard
I enjoy working with complete beginners as well as seasoned professionals. I teach classical and popular styles. I specialize in teaching learning how to learn, sight-reading, technique, improvisation, chord-reading, songwriting. One of my specialties is to help you break through your most stubborn blocks. These might be the strangest things that you think no one would ever understand -- fear of playing in public, feeling like your left hand is uncoordinated, practice procrastination, pain when playing, pain when reading notation, memory issues, musical dyslexia... ANYTHING. I can help you and I will never make you feel embarrassed.

*** All Levels, All Styles ***
-Classical
-Pop
-Country
-Gospel
-Blues
-R&B
-Rock
-Reggae
-Hip Hop
-Worship
-Church
-Hymns
-Techno
-50s
-Jazz
-New Age
-Folk
-Broadway
-Pop Ballad
-etc.

*** In Studio or Online ***
Of course it is more enjoyable if you can have lessons in person. But with modern technology, live online lessons come in a close second. I've been teaching for 40 years and I've been doing online lessons for about 7 years. I'm located in West Hills, which is a suburb of Los Angeles. If you are not local, using skype with a webcam works out surprisingly well. I have students in Sydney, London, Hong Kong and many cities throughout the US.

*** Use a Piano or a Keyboard for Practicing ***
I am not fussy if you use a keyboard but it needs to be a "weighted action" keyboard, so that it feels similar to a real piano. Ideally, you should also have a pedal and a stand if you are using an electronic keyboard.

*** Unconventional Approach ***
Each student is taught with a customized approach. You get to tell me what areas you want to focus on. Sometimes there may be a block or something that is a weakness that you need to bolster. Sometimes it is a narrow niche within music that you want to give your attention to. One way that I'm unconventional is that I actually have found that it is NOT better if you practice every day. I recommend that you build in about three days of rest per week. Just like people who work out at the gym learn that the off days are when the muscles regenerate, the same is true for your brain. This allows your subconscious mind to do its job and your progress will actually be faster, not slower. Another example of my unique approach is how I treat beginners. Even though you may not yet read music very well or at all, it doesn't mean that you can't start working concurrently on a more advanced piece. This is because READING notation is a comparatively slow process, but why should we restrict your ability to play something that you love to your rate of reading music? Usually, our FINGER TECHNIQUE develops much faster than our READING so I'm happy to guide you on one or two more difficult pieces and help spoon-feed it to you, bit by bit, "by rote."

Kelley, Dick Gautier, Michelle Pfeiffer, Pray Harper, Peter Horton, Michael Goodrich, Brianna Haynes, Starr Parodi, Briana Evigan, Stuart Ross, Roger Burnley, Chris Hardin, Stu Simone and Ben Bram.

*** Howard's Teachers Go Back To Beethoven ***
I feel grateful that my own training included top teachers of both the “German School” and “Russian School” of piano technique. Generally, the German School teaches how to play with close-to-the-key hand placement preparation and fingering efficiency, and is known for great speed and accuracy. The Russian School teaches how to play with gravity and relaxation and is known for beautiful tone production. Each approach has its strengths and weaknesses. In my own playing and teaching, I have incorporated the good aspects of each and have discarded the bad. The result is a blueprint for biomechanical efficiency and beautiful sound, making it the best of both worlds. Please see the photo of the "piano lineage chart."

Howard's approach is patient while at the same time he actually leads my son forward - not just listening to what he practiced that week. Howard does not make the weekly lesson a "test" but rather a session to work together and my son enjoys the lessons instead of worrying if he prepared enough.

We moved from Los Angeles so we chose to transition from lessons in Howard's house to weekly lessons online - it continues to work beautifully.

Howard can accommodate any style of student - I know because I took lessons from Howard myself until my work built up too much to continue.

I recommend Howard without any reservation.

Folks, I'm excited to write this review for a true master in piano pedagogy and so many other skills! Howard is worthy of the title! In all my years that I have taken lessons from teacher at universities and privately, I've never come across someone with the genius and in-depth philosophy that Howard has. You may think this may be some fluff to help a guy out but my words will still not be enough to quantify the abilities of this man! I went from having severe arthritis in my wrists from playing with terrible technique to never having problems again and experiencing a huge leap in my playing abilities!

If you want to experience a paradigm shift in your playing, get ready to open yourself to a new way of thinking and playing that will lift you up! If your attitude to learn matches Howard's abilities to teach you will not believe the progress you will make. Its true what they say, when you are ready the master will come! I hope you are ready because Howard is the real deal!!!

Enjoy your paradigm shift!!!

Russ is a truly exceptional individual and very knowledgeable in all aspects of music theory, production and the industry. Not only is he an great at what he does, but he can also relate and impart that knowledge onto others - a skill that is surprisingly rare among high-caliber performers. The price per lesson seems higher than average at first glance, but I feel that the speed and amount of knowledge you acquire per dollar is actually lower than that of other instructors. Really.

He is also active in the industry, so the skills he teaches are current.

I take lessons with Russ online through Skype for EDM production in FL Studio. He is always punctual and promptly communicates if anything comes up. His teaching style carefully balances the need to provide guidance, while allowing freedom for individual artistic development. Every week, I start a composition or track analysis project that applies what I've learned in previous lessons, and I will submit it to Russ to discuss things that went well and things to work on in the future. In this way, you are not just being lectured, but you are actually learning to collaborate with an exceptional musician. I've personally experienced how constant application and feedback facilitates rapid learning.

He certainly is a serious musician, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a fun personality. He is engaging and inspirational.

I would, without reservation nor hesitation, highly recommend Russ to anyone who is interested in professional music production.

I really enjoy learning from Russ. He is good at relating things back to a way I can understand and improve. He is so versatile in his music knowledge that I can litterally throw anything his way that I'm curious about and he points me in the right direction. I've taken guitar, bass, vocal, and even production lessons from Russ. By far the most value I have ever got from an instructor. At first I was a little hesitant because of the higher price than others, but when you start noticing that you are learning stuff other teachers had no idea about, it makes sense to pay a little more for the quality you get out of his lessons. Thanks Russ for all the lessons over the last few years! Wouldn't be where I am today without ya!

About Scott
Originally hailing from the frozen wastelands of Anchorage, Alaska where I made my living teaching music to interested polar bears, I moved south in search of warmer climates over 6 years ago. Utilizing a diverse musical background and a deep knowledge of theory I strive to provide my students with a unique and tailored lesson plan to help them realize their wildest musical dreams.

As a songwriter and performer for over 20 years I have worked with punk bands, jazz bands, traditional Irish folk bands, psychedelic jazz punk, and as a solo classical performer including performing with the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, and for the world famous Romero family during their Anchorage masterclass.

My students can expect to learn classical technique and composition, but applied to the music that motivates and stimulates them. I want my studen
ts to love playing more than I want them to pass recitals.
