Learn about rhythm, melody, harmony, and dynamics and how they affect your songwriting. Break down songs that you like to learn about the elements that make you like them and make them compelling to others.
*Disclaimer* I'm currently not taking beginner students on voice/singing, guitar, bass, drums, piano, and ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Melissa though. Please check out her profile:
I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.
Philosophy of Learning
Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. It's really important to know though that everyone makes their own experience. The process of learning music involves you learning as much about your own mind and body as it does any external concepts, so please keep in mind only you can move yourself forward.
I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.
I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!) Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.
Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype. (*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)
*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
My studio is equipped with:
*A P.A. System
*Vocal and instrument microphones
*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc
*Two guitar amps and a bass amp
*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set
*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set
*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ
*A MicroKorg Synthesizer
*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to
*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype
Jesse has given directions on how to successfully become a better musician. His approach and explanation on musical theories was much more understandable than what I was previously reading. Overall, I found the lessons to be very usefull.

Jesse is very friendly and a fun teacher to be around.
Travis grew up in a musical family in Santa Cruz, CA. His father was a professional guitarist and his grandfather was the head of the music program at Cabrillo College in Aptos, so naturally he grew up with an instrument in his hand. After years of toying with the guitar Travis began formal lesson at the age of 9, quickly developing into an exceptional musician. By the age of 13 Travis was in several rock bands and performing frequently. Once in high school, Travis had no doubt that being a professional musician was what we wanted to do with his life so he started studying jazz and classical piano at a college level, studying with jazz trumpeter/arranger Ray Brown and classically trained pianist Ivan Rosenblum. Travis excelled and quickly began playing in the top Jazz Combo at Cabrillo College and in the top Big Band as well as playi
ng professionally. In 2013 Travis received his BA in Music for Film from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and currently resides in Santa Cruz scoring commercials, television and film as well as producing albums and working on his own projects. Ever since Travis was 14 he has had an extreme passion to teach and pass on his musical knowledge. He started out teaching his friends and peers in high school for little or no money where he learned how to teach and gained valuable teaching experience. Eventually, he began teaching as a profession in the Santa Cruz area where he continued to hone the art of teaching.
*** Lesson Details *** Travis has been teaching for over 8 years and has acquired extensive knowledge on the most efficient and fun teaching methods. Travis' goal for each student is for them to have fun while learning the instrument, and to pass on his passion for the instrument. Curriculum is different for each student, as not all students learn in the same way or want to learn the same thing. Travis teaches most genres including: all areas of rock, jazz, blues, funk, metal and more. He will cover topics including technique, soloing, chords, theory, sight-reading, developing your ear as well as learning about the guitar and how to take care of it. He is a patient teacher and devotes himself to each student.
*** Travel Equipment *** I expect my students to have a guitar and if they are playing an electric, they need an amp at home.
*** Specialties *** I excel at rock, jazz and blues guitar and have in depth knowledge of jazz theory and harmony.
My son is really enjoying his lessons. Travis is a great teacher: patient, fun and very kind.
December 5, 2011
He was super. Patient, and a good teacher, all 4 of us liked him.
June 25, 2011
Travis is amazing. He's been teaching my son for about 8 weeks and he's well exceeded my expectations. Travis is very patient and an excellent teacher. He keeps the class pace moving from music theory to playing songs and somehow manages to keep my rambunctious 10 year old fully engaged for an hour""no easy task. I highly recommend him!
Weather you have written 100 songs or you want to write your first song, I can help. We will go over melody, singing technique, and work on making your song/songs the best they can be. I have worked with many songwriters of all genres to help their songwriting ability, including many bands who currently play out in the Phoenix area. If your a beginner and only have a melody in your head, I can help you put that melody down into your own music (playing piano or guitar is very helpful for you to know basics of songwriting). If you have any questions regarding songwriting lessons, please feel free to ask me by clicking the ask a teacher button at the top of my profile.
I am like a proud mama when it comes to my students. I have been teaching online and in person for 8 years now and I have seen all of my students grow and accomplish so many great things. Whether their goal has been to get a main role in a theater production in a theater troup or at school, to create their own songs from start to finish, to perform live with confidence, feel confident and prepared for auditions, winning competitions, or even to just learn how to sing or to play for their own enjoyment. I have seen students go on to win medals at state and world competitions, be on TV performing music or theater, become a national touring musician as a band, release their own music, and open up for famous artists. I've seen my students accomplish all of these things and more with the help of their lessons. I don't only consider myself a te
acher, but a mentor. I help to encourage and push my students to do more than they think they can. I not only teach them the skills they need to learn to accomplish their goals or parents goals, but I help students to develop great habits that they can apply to many other things in life such as practicing efficiently and effectively, and building confidence along the way.
About me: I've been singing since the age of 3 and performing on stage since the age of 6. I grew up around music, as my parents also played and instilled a love of music in me. At age 7, I began to perform with the Columbia School of Theatrical Arts. I choreographed my own dances, which was a part of the show, while also acting. I've always loved all aspects of performing, whether singing and playing or on stage in productions. As I grew older I began to gain more interest in writing my own music, so I formed a band where we created music and played in shows and festivals. I wanted to work on my craft even more, so I went to school to study music and education. I have performed in different cover bands playing at weddings and corporate events, church's, events, etc. Today, I continue to push myself to be the best teacher, musician, vocalist, songwriter and performer I can be and to help my students to be the best they can be and to shine in their talents and abilities. I am so proud of all that they have accomplished and I look forward to helping you, my future student, with your goals!

Lynzi is amazing! She's patient and tailors each lesson to your individual need. She is very professional, but welcoming at the same time. We would highly recommend Lynzi.
June 27, 2019
Lynzi is very knowledgable with vocal training and an excellent singer as well. I explained issues with my voice and she gave great tips to help strengthen my singing. The main thing is that she listened to my needs and heard what was going on with me vocally. I already hear a difference with my singing after one lesson and doing what she told me to do. That’s what makes Lynzi a great instructor.
Self-expression and creativity are traits budding musicians often need some help developing. Coaching can consist of basic introduction to song structures and understanding popular songwriting techniques, while more advanced songwriters may need critiques from another pair of ears. What's the fun in only playing other people's music?
Extensive musical training, including thirteen years of jazz and classical guitar performance and theory, coupled with real-life experience as a studio and touring guitarist offers me a unique approach to music instruction focused on your individual goals and needs.
*** Lesson Details *** While I do have a general method for education, the priority is always on what the student wants to learn. If you have specific subject material you would like to explore, contact me, I'll certainly help you out in any way I can!
*** Studio Equipment ***
Depending on the situation, I can bring some of my recording and performance gear to lessons for demonstrations and exercises, including:

lins, acoustics, classicals, and folk instruments -Home studio equipped with Pro Tools 11 and Logic Pro X for recording
*** Travel Equipment *** I bring with me basic gear for teaching (not much more than sheet music and a guitar), but I can not leave gear with students. If a student had questions about specific types of gear I may have, including effects processors and amplifiers, and would like a hands-on learning approach, they can contact me in advance and I can demo the equipment for them.

Anthony starts from where you are with your skills and opens doors for your improvement.
May 9, 2017
I am to restarting an activity that I once enjoyed years ago. Anthony is the perfect instructor for this re-start: His style of teaching is positive and patient and his approach, with me at least, is focused on my stated desires of incorporating new runs, fingerings and a more melodic approach to my playing guitar: to rely more on the guitar and less on the voice. I look forward to practicing and to the sessions themselves since I started to see the improvement immediately.
Students can expect a relaxed atmosphere, but also making sure that there is a high level of professionalism and expectation of attentiveness from the student.
Of course, I also understand that this all depends on the age of the student, and as we meet and get to see what it is that you want to focus on and I will make sure to concentrate on that and help you reach your goals!
Hello Parents and Students,
I have been teaching and writing music professionally for ten years. My first introduction to music was just like some of you, starting in high school where I had a great teacher that encouraged me to play. This helped me so much, and I wouldn't be where I am at if it weren't for his help and positive encouragement. Now I try to encourage all of my students the same way.
After high school I went on and played percussion with various Orchestras such as the "Inland Valley Symphony Orchestra" and "Mt. San Jacinto Symphony Orchestra."
I have also been involved in the DCI (Drum Corps International) and Drumline community. I toured for four years and experienced performing with groups such as Yamato Drum and Bugle Corps 2002-2005, Black Knights 2006, and RCC marching and winter percussion under the direct
ion of Scott Johnson & Jeff Lee in 2002, and Sean Vega & Jim Wunderlich in 2003.
During my college years I started playing Jazz Vibraphone in my school's top big-band. This allowed me the opportunity to play Jazz Piano which I have performed and still study until this day. As a result, Jazz has now become one of my biggest passions.
As a Professional International Composer, I have had the privilege of writing and arranging for many marching bands, wind ensembles, and indoor percussion ensembles, including orchestrations, recordings and sequencing projects for media, and musical theatre in the United States and Japan.
I am also currently an adjudicator for the Southern California Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) and a member of the Vic-Firth Education Team.
I hope that this gives you a close and personal Idea of where I come from and hope that I can help you get the most out of your experience with music.
*** Lesson Details *** I believe that in order for you to get the most out of our lessons it takes both, the Teacher's and Student's understanding and attention from both ends. sometimes giving all of the information in the world won't help if one there is no engagement and two if me as a teacher don't make sure that you understand. So I like to make sure to explain things in more than one way to make sure the student understands the concepts and what to practice.
I like to keep a relaxed atmosphere, but also making sure that there is a high level of professionalism and expectation of attentiveness from the student.
Of course, I also understand that this all depends on the age of the student, and as we meet and get to see what it is that you want to focus on and I will make sure to concentrate on that and help you reach your goals!

I'm Ahmad a very enthusiastic musician. I started out teaching myself guitar at the age of 12. I moved to the U.S. in 2001 and studied music for 15 years receiving my B.M. and M.M in music and audio production at San Francisco State University. I then moved to Los Angeles then studied and trained with John Mayer, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, George Lynch and many others. I have performed hundreds of concerts in the U.S. as well in Europe and the Middle East with Artists such as Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Guns N Roses, Michael Angelo Batio, Ratt, Sammy Hagar, Dokken and many others. I ranked #1 in the Slash Guitar Center competition. I was in the "list of top 5 guitar players ever" according to The Examiner, also picked as one of the best guitarists of 2013 and 2014 consecutively in the Rockwell UnScene magazine, and ranked 3rd in the Steve Vai Sam Ash Best in Shred competition.

I find a student's strengths and weaknesses using various ways to encourage each student. I am very patient, kind, flexible, and enthusiastic and I love working with children as much as adults. I strongly support basic skills: sight-reading, pitch and tone.
I have 25 years experience teaching kids and adults guitar. Also performing live and in the studio.
*** Lesson Details *** My objectives: to help students powerfully communicate through the essence of music and aid the development of children and adults by finding their strengths and weaknesses and to develop their skills and show their musical talents. I emphasize basic skills, good sight-reading, guitar technique, and theory.
Lessons are held at either your home, or mine using composers from various time periods that speaks to the individual student. Also,I do prefer to work weekly with my students. A beginner lesson may be 10-15 min. for warm-ups and scales, 10-15 min. theory and rest playtime. In three to six months the student will be able to read sheet music and should be able to perform simple songs.
An intermediate lesson has more focus on music and technique from a specific genre. A specialty is preparation for guitar auditions or doing live or studio gigs.
I enjoy teaching children from age 5 up to adults.
*** Specialties *** I teach the basic skills very strongly, and also encourage students and challenge them, as well. I also have new techniques for teaching Electric, Acoustic & CLassical Guitar. I do prefer to teach a weekly lesson.
I started taking guitar lessons for the first time 10 months ago and am thankful I found such a great teacher in Ahmad. His positive attitude and love of music helps me stay engaged and lessons are productive and fun.
One of the great things about Ahmad is he listens to you and adjusts lesson content based on the feedback you provide. His ability to listen allows Ahmad to deliver a personalized lesson plan that incorporates your goals and gets you excited about what you are working on.
Ahmad also has taught me techniques to prevent and address minor aches that come up while learning to play. He takes this seriously and shows you how to prevent and resolve any issues that come up.
Overall, taking lessons from Ahmad has been a very positive experience. I look forward to continuing working with him to get better.

I have been taking guitar lessons with Ahmad Since 2011. Music has always been important to me and my lessons with Ahmad have been a continual source of inspiration and joy. I love Ahmad's musical philosophy and regardless of what I'm interested in he is always able to help me better myself. I continue to be very busy in my life but always find myself coming back to music. Through taking lessons with Ahmad I have been able to achieve many of my musical goals and know that if I keep practicing I will be able to achieve even more of my goals.
Ahmad is extremely talented, intelligent, and friendly and is always there to support me in whatever new musical concept I wish to learn next. He can help anyone looking to better themselves in a wide variety of areas regardless of the style of music you are interested in. I have been studying country and jazz with him primarily, as my goal is to be able to write my own music and put together a band some day. I have no intention of stopping music lessons with Ahmad as they continue to be something I look forward to every week. Anyone would be lucky to have such a great teacher.

I've had the pleasure of taking lessons from Ahmad for a couple of years. He is a very knowledgeable and patient instructor with the ability to find minor technical flaws in my playing and easily correct them. I really enjoy his philosophy and musical understanding with a really high ability to dissect and explain elements of a song and relate it to music theory that's easily understandable. On top of that he is a super nice guy that exudes nothing but a positive attitude and gives one the impression that anything is possible in one's musical effort that is really infectious. Don't hesitate to give Ahmad a try.

Tutoring: I have been teaching for over 17 years. I hold a BS in Cellular Biology for UGA: a MSM from Troy University, and PhD from the University of Alabama @ Birmingham. I look forward to helping you with all your tutoring needs.
Music: Piano, Voice, Songwriting, Music Theory: As the owner of Louise Catherine Music Studio (LCMS), my company's motto is, “unlocking the keys to exceptional music.” I strive to help each student person achieve musical excellence by teaching you to love music as much as I do. I have been in the arts for over 35 years with the majority of that in music. My musical background includes clarinet, self-taught flute, piano, vocals, guitar, and songwriting. I have performed in choruses, solo performances and in bands. I have been teaching for over 16 years. Let’s start a new wonderful musical journey t
Jocelyn is an excellent teacher. She was always responsive and flexible. She made learning fun every time we met. She was always in a chipper mood and made me feel like my priority was to be a better teacher
June 6, 2019
I was unsure if I wanted to go back to school. I was unsatisfied at my job and I didn't know what to do next. Jocelyn was great in that she listened to me but allowed me to make up my own mind. She had a lot of experience as a student and as an educator. She helped me to pick the right program, school, and prepare me for the GRE. i'm now enrolled in a program I love and I look forward to graduating and going into my new career.
"My writing was sub-par, to say the least. Margo helped me to paint a vivid picture with my words, and also create melodies to best express them. Now, I co
nsult her every time I have a song or poem to write!"
"The songwriting classes with Kenneth have been very beneficial. In just a short period of time, I have learned so much about songwriting techniques. Kenne
th has demonstrated to me the step by step lyric writing process. I have been able to make lyrics I wrote come alive once music was added to my song. I highly recommend Kenneth to anyone needing guidance with learning more about songwriting techniques."
"I tried other teachers for my songwriting craft and vocal career. I felt like I was going nowhere fast and became frustrated. Then I tried Fawn. Game chan

"Jan is very professional."
"Melaena is an amazing teacher! She is patient, encouraging, and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. I really enjoyed sitting through her songwrit

"Henri understands my goal of wanting to learn to cover songs and eventually write my own. It's exactly what I'm looking for."
"I've been learning songwriting and music theory from David and it couldn't be any better. He's very professional and personable, and he makes sure to wor
k with you, not above you. He shows a genuine enthusiasm for his students' musical interests and formulates instruction around them. David encourages questions, which creates a comfortable and effective teacher-student interaction. Between my weekly lessons, I find myself impatiently counting down the days until my next scheduled lesson. While the genre of songwriting that I've been working on with David's guidance has been contemporary Christian, I'm sure that he would be an effective teacher in any genre, whether the student were writing songs or playing them."
"Stephen has definitely provided me an insightful way of analyzing songs and for writing my own music myself. He is really helpful and gives you many eye o
pening advices and tools that encourage you to develop your artistry. Furthermore, he provides a friendly and non judegemental atmosphere, which is essential for a student. I totally recommend him."
"Totally Amazing. She teaches me Music theory to improve my songs, she gives tips on lyrics. And she's really cute!"
When you're learning how to write a song, looking at how other songs are structured can be a great place to start. Like looking at a map before you go on a roadtrip, checking out the basic elements of songs you love gives you a sense of how they were written and what you need to do to write a song of your own.
If analyzing all your favorite songs sounds like a daunting task (it is), you're in luck. The Billboard Experiment wanted to know if there was a formula that could determine which songs …
