About Rob
Rob (aka R.J.): Born in Detroit, Michigan, RJ studied r&b and jazz from Motown drummers and Funk Brothers Benny Benjamin and Uriel Jones. From the age of fifteen he played in rhythm & blues and jazz combos around Detroit. He then studied privately with Berklee School of Music drum maestro, Gene Stuart, mallet studies with Mark Johnson at Michigan State University and earned a Bachelors Degree from Michigan State. He moved to San Francisco where he studied North Indian percussion and tabla with Zakir Hussain, trap set with jazz recording artist George Marsh. He is a consummate producer, performer, recording artist and teacher. He plays and teaches all styles of rhythm including jazz, funk, blues, rock, latin, and world fusion. He teaches drumset, congas, djembe, tabla, cajon and hand percussion. In addition to teaching privately, RJ h
as directed special week-long drum and percussion focused ensemble productions at Drake High School and Marin Academy and was Music Director at Cascade Canyon (K-8) School for two years where he directed variety shows and produced scores for the drama department. In his teaching practice all ages are welcome and all levels including: beginners, intermediate students, advanced players, and professionals.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to drum lessons is simple. I want my students to be excited about every stage of the process. I want to be as productive as possible with each student and want the lessons to be fun and focused.
I want beginning students to learn the essentials of good posture, correct hand positions or grips (how to hold the sticks in matched and military grip), how to best use their hands and feet to get around the drumset and to then develop a solid foundation of applicable rudiments, rhythms and patterns. In fact,
I have master drumset rudiments that help facilitate fluid movement around the drums in all directions. My studio is equipped with a top level TAMA drumset with Zildjian cymbals, congas, timbales, hand percussion, piano, vibes, excellent recording and listening equipment and speakers.
I provide the necessary foundations of rudiments, rhythms, patterns and grooves. Then I show how to combine these essentials to the drumset. I combine these developments with essential reading studies so the student learns to read drum music and charts from the very beginning.
I find out what kind of music the student listens to and likes and then I will use some of the more familiar tracks by those artists to help the student apply each pattern stylistically into actual arrangements…like a guitar teacher would teach some scales and chords, then apply them to actual songs. That way the student will remember the different patterns and remained engaged in the process. It’s a “see, say and do” approach.
I have a saying that I use: “FREEDOM follows FUNCTION and function follows FORM.” First you learn the forms (rudiments, rhythms and patterns). Then, with practice, you become functional with the forms, rhythm patterns and combinations. Then you are free to use everything you learn as it relates to the music. Your are “free” to create and improvise both alone and with others.

Within six month my students will have a firm grasp of essential rudiments, rhythms, patterns, sticking, single and double bass drumset techniques and be reading charts for the drumset.
Later on, as part of the student’s development, I will introduce them to different styles of music including jazz, African, Afro-Cuban, Latin and Brazilian rhythms and patterns so that the student becomes a well-rounded player.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My Private Studio is on the first floor of my house: there is a six-piece professional series TAMA drumset and an assortment of K. and A. Zildjian cymbals, a piano, set of vibes, timbales, congas, bongos, djembe and a variety of hand percussion. There are additional chairs to sit on, Parents are welcome to sit in on lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Five and six piece drum sets, hard cases, three congas with cases, bongos in a hard case, timbales in a hard case, trap case for stands, cymbal case and stick bag.

*** Specialties ***
Trapset all styles, African djembe and shekere, Latin congas and timbales, Indian tablas.

I never expected to find a teacher as stellar as Rob Franco. It's one thing to be an accomplished drummer, but quite another to have the capacity to teach what you know. Rob's got both! He ably teaches theory, technique, and application. He has a wonderful warm personality that feeds a student's confidence without insincerity. It's obvious that Rob has been successfully teaching students how to drum for a good long time because he does it with such ease and good humor. Wanna learn how to drum? Read drum music? Understand how it all works? And have a really relaxed and fun time while you're learning? Rob Franco is your man.

I Got Lucky

A year and a half ago I decided to try to learn how to play an instrument, and chose drums. Learning how to also read and write music for drumming was high on my list. I also needed this to be a fun adventure with no real public performance goals for the first couple of years. It needed to be a stress reducer from the demands of the day job. Finding and working with RJ has been a total kick in the pants. I couldn't ask for a better coach. He hasn't let me get stuck in any one form, I'm learning all of them. It's hard! But I couldn't imagine not drumming now. It's very exciting, and I look forward to learning more over the coming years.

You won't find a better teacher than Rob. He obviously knows music, both theory and application. He is concerned about proper technique, but also enjoyment and variety, which means that you get it all. I'm learning tons more than I thought I would.

I try to cater to each student's specific interests and lifestyle. With a background in orchestra and marching band as well as years of touring and recording in different styles of bands, I am able to balance the technical and fun aspects of the drums.

About warren
Hello! I'm a drummer and drum teacher based in San Francisco.

I have 30+ years playing drums in and 15 years teaching experience under my belt and although my focus has been the drum set the past 25 years, my foundation was in orchestral percussion and the rudiment heavy discipline of marching band.

About me: After moving to San Francisco in the fall of 1998, I quickly became part of a vibrant and diverse music community here and toured and recording with artists such as Citay, Crime In Choir, Tussle, Daevid Allen(of Gong), Carletta Sue Kay, Damo Suzuki(of CAN) and 3 Leafs to name a few. Since 2002 I have taught drum lessons privately, and for institutions such as The Paul Green School of Rock, Vibo Music, Alma Music Academy, Live Oak elementary school, Children's Day elementary school and The San Francisco Project and continue to p
erform around the Bay Area and beyond. I received the honor of Best Drummer from the SF Weekly in 2009.

As a teacher, I try to cater to the individual needs of each student while focusing and good technique and the fun, expressive qualities of the drums. Thanks for your consideration!

Whether you are a complete beginner or getting more advanced and need the keys to reach your next level, I love teaching and I am here to get you there.
I started playing drumset and snare drum when I was 12. After spending years in study, classically trained and playing in a professional Symphony Orchestra, while engaged as a gigging rock musician, I spent many years as a live performer and producer of live music, recorded music and theater. i've grown into this craft and feel strongly about conveying it's rudimentary and finer points to students who are interested in exploring and de-mystiifying the process and it's nature.
I teach students to read and write music, to play strong beats and fills, develop natural technique, relaxation and independence, and to think and grow musically. Eventually you will learn to use stylish transitions, interpret song structure, and achieve proficiency in a variety of styles. And most importantly, learn to play drums and percussion *musically*, ...

About John
I play a wide variety of musical styles on drums and percussion and have a long history of performance art in live bands, theater and orchestra. I teach drum set, symphonic and marching percussion, electronics in drumming (sampling, loops, midi etc), and general rhythm lessons for beginners. I also enjoy helping students prepare for auditions, studio recording sessions, and live performance opportunities. There's alot to know about what to do and what not to do in these situations, especially if you want to look like a pro and have a positive experience.

I studied percussion performance at Washington State University while developing my set playing and enjoying my employment with the Washington Idaho Symphony as a classical percussionist. I play in rock, funk, pop, metal, EDM, hip-hop, industrial, honky-tonk, and jazz outfits with mult
iple appearances at SXSW, Sundance Film Festival, TieCon, and various festivals throughout the US.

John is a fantastic teacher! I started with no experience at all and now after my fourth lesson I already feel comfortable with my grip, a metronome, sheet music, single stroke rolls, double stroke rolls, and several rock beats. Currently, I’m learning sixteenth note drum fills. He is patient, enthusiastic, fun, and extremely talented. I highly recommend him as a drum teacher (beginner or experienced). You will not regret it!

Beginning drum students will be taught the basics in a fun but productive way. I will teach a strong foundation so a student can move forward with confidence. Lessons would be individualized to focus on areas that need the most guidance.

Students will learn to feel rhythms from whole notes up to sixteenth notes and become fluent in simple, compound, and swing rhythm families. You will gain the skills for simple time keeping as well as playing simple songs.

About Melissa
I have been teaching since 2006 on a variety of topics. I graduated with an BA from the University of Wisconsin. My degree is in History with and emphasis on East Asian history.

I've taught all age groups from age 2 up to retirees. My teaching experience includes one-on-one and group classes in a variety of settings. I've taught corporate classes, private lessons, small groups, and traditional classroom lessons.

We have a student-centric philosophy of learning. Lessons are generally relaxed and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. Special focus on topics like music theory, self-accompaniment, composition, song writing, and home recording are available as well.

What are your personal goals? We'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but we prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible.

Music is a subject that anyone can relate to. Playing and performing music is a dream that many aspire. I have watched my students grow from complete beginners to taking stages in front of a large audience.

I am always thorough about teaching my students the basics: understanding proper technique, dynamics, and timing. I teach my students to play to a metronome, read music and rhythms, play songs, and play along with other live musicians. I specialize in many various genres of music including funk, rock, pop, hip-hop, prog, and metal. Over time, you will learn to play like the professionals that inspire you.

About Dennis
Hello, my name is Dennis Willoner.

Music and art have always been a huge part of my life. I have been playing drums for 15 years and have been teaching for 7. I grew up learning to play drums from a private instructor, and have been studying on my own ever since. I have played in many bands in my music career and have also tracked drums in studios for local artists. Today, I currently work at School of Rock in Palo Alto as a private and group instructor, and play in a professional band called Constructs.

I have been drawing ever since I can remember. I mostly draw realistically, but also like to get on the creative side. I enjoy drawing faces and people the most out of any subject. After learning so much about art, the world can be viewed in a complete other perspective.

I have been wanting to learn drawing since I was a kid. Had a few years of drawing when I was a kid and then haven't touched in a long time. When I rekindled my interest to learn, I came across Dennis.
Honestly, the reason why I chose Dennis was because he provided at-home classes and that would avoid the hassle of me having to travel. The first few classes were more of me and him warming up to each other, as I am sure he also found me different.
He comes with all the necessary equipment and spends a few minutes giving you some basics of the stuff we are going to do that day. Then he leaves you to draw while he also draws the same. He glances once in a while at your sheet and gives you very subtle feedback. If you have missed something, he will just try to nudge you in the right direction with minor comments like "Don't you think, these are of the same darkness?, There may be more highlights in this area or the mid tones here and here are of the same darkness. etc.". He never touches your paper, but only guides you.
Sometimes when some focus is needed (for example on the eyes), he will tell you the technique involved in depth and we did one full class just doing eyes, one full class on hair.
It was a little frustrating initially for me as I was not used to the teaching technique, and now I see the point. The first drawing itself turned out be much much better than I had anticipated it to be and he hasn't touched my paper till now - so this drawing is fully mine.
You can also continue drawing and send work via text message to him. You almos t always get detailed instant feedback. The only thing is, I haven't been very diligent in doing drawings due to lack of free time. So once a week for an hour is what I do.
He also spends extra time sometimes so that he can take the drawing to a logical point, sometimes even beyond 1.5 hrs though my session is for an hour each. That shows the commitment he has to his students.
I believe my work will improve as this course continues. We have had about 6 classes and I am already seeing the difference. A long way to go, but the first steps have been right - most of it due to Dennis and his method of teaching. I would say more than teaching, it is a method of mentoring where the hand holding is done in a unique way.

I was fortunate enough to have inspiring teachers who taught me, not just about drum set and percussion, but also about how to tap into our creative spirit and become a part of the music happening around us. They also taught me the importance of passing these lessons on. I have over 15 years of experience in private instruction for drum set and 20 years of experience in performance. Each lesson I offer is catered to the individual student. I enjoy teaching/learning songs to play along to, but also value time spent on the practice pad, working on rudiments and reading. Having a foundation of technique is essential to knowing your instrument and understanding where you can take it in the future. This is something I strive to offer each student, regardless of age or experience level. I have experience playing various styles with musicians all over the world. I love shredding licks, playing afro-cuban, jazz, blues, reggae, funk, rock, dance, R&B, soul, and just playing in the pocket! ...

Everyone enjoys air drumming but I can show you how to take it to the next level!

Drums don't have to be hard given you have the right teacher by your side.
Lessons with me are great for beginners who are looking to feel confident quickly. You will learn some basic skills that will get you drumming on your own kit in no time. Feel free to let me know who your music inspirations are so that we can begin to curate your lessons into learning that specific music style.

I'm a fan of teaching on both the acoustic and electronic drums, as I use both quite often in my personal life.

Can't wait to rock out with you!

About Micah
Hi I'm Micah!

Before learning drums in my Junior year of high school I can remember using chopsticks to bang on the kitchen table. Needless to say my family wasn't having it! Fast forward to now and I'm successfully converting pen tappers and air drummers into actual musicians.

I cater all of my lessons depending on your interest of why you want to learn drums. I've taught people who were in it to start a band and others who simply wanted to learn a new skill. Regardless of why you choose drums, we will always tailor our lessons to play along with your favorite music! In our first few lessons you will learn drum basics like how to properly hold sticks, strike the drum, and keep time --- essentials for any beginning drummer.

I've personally played in bands that are rock/alternative, blues, funk, reggae, soca, pop covers and dubstep/el
ectronic music. No matter the genre, it seems like I always find a way to connect with the music because of my passion for the drums, something I hope to pass onto my fellow students.

What are we waiting for? Let's jam!

I love sharing my enthusiasm for music with my students! For the last ten years, I've guided hundreds of students to improve their drumming and percussion performance, their composing, and their musicality. As a drummer and a composer myself, I am able to combine concepts from both disciplines into my lessons, which are specially designed for every students' unique needs. It doesn't matter what your experience level is— beginner, intermediate, or advanced— I can help you improve your skills. All ages accepted. Let's get started!

About Jeremy
I'm a drummer, composer, and music theory instructor from Long Island, NY. I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees in music composition from SUNY Purchase College, and am currently working on my PhD in music composition at UC Berkeley.

As a drummer, I love playing and teaching all styles of music, with a particular affinity for rock, funk, jazz, alternative, electronic music, improvisation, and marching percussion. In 2013, I toured the country with NY-based folk band Elijah & the Moon, performing gigs in 10 US states including the Mountain Jam music festival. I always emphasize the importance of rudiments, fundamentals, and good technique in all my lessons— no doubt these are values instilled in me from my long background in marching and classical percussion studies. I've performed in jazz ensembles, rock bands, metal bands, cove
r bands, improvisation collectives, orchestras, and contemporary classical music ensembles.

As a composer, my pieces have so far been performed in New York, California, Tennessee, Virginia, Ukraine, Italy, and in 2019, Spain. I'm highly trained in orchestration, score and parts preparation, music theory, and solfege. Not only can I help students learn the drum parts to their favorite songs, but I can also help develop the skills needed to analyze the melodies, chord progressions, and structures. I'm currently teaching music theory for undergraduate students in the UC Berkeley Department of Music.

I use Sibelius notation software, Ableton, iZotope, Tama drums, Meinl cymbals, and Vic Firth sticks.
