I like to watch a child's face light up when they learn something; I make it fun and bring incentives (stickers, snacks, treats, lil rewards for a job well done). I make sure to ask if they've practiced (I ask for 15+min a day). I always start with the hand position and strong posture, and then start with scales to warm fingers up. I like to work on 1-2 songs per week and then as the student progresses add more challenges. I also incorporate youtube or fun art history or interesting "stories behind the songs" too if possible. (For instance, for homework, ask your parent if you may go online and view a picture or a video of a full orchestra, or watch a waltz).

About Christiana

I started playing piano when I was about 9yo. I played for vocalists in college too. I play for churches and I love to teach beginners. I love my dogs and am active outside and in the gym. I am a foodie, I love movies and soundtracks, and am an eclectic musical lover.

Michelle is a great teacher. She is patient, kind, and enthusiastic about music. My child loves going to class and hates missing a class (only when she's sick). She makes learning music fun but it also firm if the child doesn't meet the expectation. It's been a year since we started lessons and we couldn't be more happier.

Michelle has been very good at keeping my 8 year old engaged and interested in learning to read music. We are looking forward to many more lessons.

Hear me out- The piano may be the easiest instrument to play physically and one of the hardest to play mentally.

Easy to play physically:
With the piano, just hit a key to make a sound come out. Thats it. No fighting with the reed on a saxophone, killin' your cheeks on a trumpet, or building calluses on the guitar.

Hard to play mentally:
Almost all other instruments require both hands to create sound. Strings require one hand to choose a note on a string while the other hand plucks or bows it and all wind instruments require both hands to pick a note while your breath plays it. We already know to play the piano you just hit a button... this means each hand can hit a button. You can now make two sounds at once, independently from each other. It's like playing two instruments at once.

This two instruments concept plays a HUGE role in classical piano. Lets expand that thought and realize each FINGER can play an individual note or phrase. If your piano were an orchestra ...

I approach private lessons with an open ear and an open mind, preferring to take cues from my students' own interests as a guide towards choosing repertoire and building a foundation in theory and technique that will best suit each individual student's needs and goals for their study with me. I teach all styles and genres; no one style is 'sacred' or above any other!

Mike adores teaching. He truly values his interactions with his students. He is patient and enthusiastic and his knowledge of music and vocal theory is astounding. I highly recommend him to anyone at any skill level looking to hone their skills.
Tom
The kids both loved taking lessons from Mike, as they could sing modern and show pieces, and they even did excerpts from Handel's Messiah. Highly recommend him.
Meret
Mike's experience as a composer and vocal coach as well as pianist enables him to tailor lessons to the student's interests. I hired him to do a workshop with a group of flute students and they loved it so much a few who were only registered for one day came back for a second day! The end result was also so fun - these kids weren't singers to begin with, but they totally bought into the mini-musical they created. He has a great rapport with students of all ages - they love him and more importantly they trust him. Whenever anyone asks me if I know a piano/voice teacher I recommend Mike without reservation!

"Due to the coronsvirus, I decided to restart the piano I had abandoned as a kid. I am very pleased so far with my lessons. Chloe takes the time to understand my goals and developed a lesson plan customized to my needs. She explains much more than my previous music teacher. She makes learning music much more interesting."

"The reason I came to Mr. Brian: I wasn't making any progress under my previous teacher at a local music school. I'd say I absolutely have made the right decision to study with him! At first, my parents thought Mr. Brian's piano lessons are a bit expensive, but they let me try out the first few lessons. Worth the price! I have stayed with him for almost 4 years. He is so passionate with piano and he always tries to push me to my fullest potential, even when certain pieces seem impossible for me to tackle. We are working on a 45 min college audition program; I have never imagined I could make it this far (I hated piano when I was a kid)."

"As a fellow teacher, pianist and choral director, I know a fine musician and teacher when I see one, and I am happy to recommend Tamari Witkin as an outstanding teacher of piano, voice and composition. As a highly versatile, knowledgeable, multi-faceted musician and coach, she motivates her students of all ages, from beginner to advanced levels, to keep reaching for ever-higher levels. Tamari's enthusiasm and creativity as an instructor make taking lessons from her both interesting and fun. She skillfully and thoughtfully communicates the language, meaning and joy of making music. Tamari is exceptional in encouraging and motivating her students. These qualities are what make up the keys to what it's all about; the bottom line: one would be hard-pressed to find a better balanced and effective teacher of music."
