This is a play-by-ear approach. Virtually all pop music bands, regardless of genre, have for the past 65 years used drumming that is played by ear. This means, without the use of written music. Few venues today require drumming to written "drum" music charts.
You will learn the basics of music structure, how to provide a rhythmic foundation and then to embellish from there. We will play along with live music (basic Rock-n-Roll) learning to hear and interpret what's going on in the music and how drums help create that sound. Stick control, posture, maneuvers and techniques along with hardware management and maintenance are all included with the focus on becoming a working and productive member of a band.
Student should have access to at least a basic drum set.

My 6 year old is well... a 6 year old but Dr. J is so patient with her and has already taught her so many new skills in just a few short lessons. He keeps the lessons fun but is able to refocus her on her lessons. Dr. J is an overall amazing musician that is very skilled in a variety of musical techniques. He is also very professional and extremely reliable (even in inclement weather). I would recommend Dr. J to any family that is wanting their child to learn how to play music.

I want to make sure my students have a good time learning drums but I also want to make sure they learn a lot..! I always make sure to ask my students what they want to learn and what their favorite music is... after that, I figure out what type of lessons to plan out.

Start to learn about polyrhythms as well as developing your ears and body to play songs more accurately. Start to spice up your playing with ways that are interesting, but not intrusive.
Advanced
Really push your polyrhythms and add asymmetrical meters to your repertoire to expand your grasp of complex rhythms. Also learn to use dynamics, cymbal work, and fills to effectively communicate and lead a band without words.

Over the past 12 years, we've given over 3,000,000 lessons to happy customers around the world.

We originally chose Jesse because we found out he could teach just about any instrument and my 7-year-old son wasn't sure about what he wanted to play. On the first class he tried the drums, and he never wanted to let it go. My son is a particularly challenging student because he is highly distractible, and Jesse was extremely patient and very organized/methodic with him, and therefore able to keep him on track. My husband plays in a band, and we both think Jesse is a super talented teacher who offers lessons with a great balance between fun and actual learning of good musical habits. In less that a month my son was feeling confident enough to play in front of the camera and send family members video samples of his new drummer self! We couldn't be happier."

A really good guy as well.
Thank you for the experience."

She has a lot of positivity and good naturedness, easy to relate to. She also was able to come up with some good ideas for how to improve some of my playing.
I look forward to my next lesson!"

A few weeks ago we discussed how to prepare for a gig, but what if you're stuck on the very first step of getting through the audition? Check out this expert advice from DC-area drum teacher Andrew T., who has experience working as a musician for Princess Cruises: As musicians, most of our gigs stem from informal auditions, which are typically very loose and relaxed. But what happens when you are asked to audition formally for a gig with a large corporation? From 2007 to 2009 I worked …
