Playing percussion is fun! As a performer and teacher, bringing out a passion for music from my students and audience is my number one objective. From the endless number of instruments we get to play, to being the rhythmic backbone of any group we play with, being a percussionist is an endless journey of growth and joy. I tailor my lesson-teaching to the musical interests of each individual student, while still covering the essential fundamentals of music that allows the student to conquer any genre that peaks their interest.

About Dylan

I am a professional drummer, orchestral percussionist, solo marimbist and composer. I have received a Masters Degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Music Performance and a Bachelors of Music Education from the Shenandoah Conservatory. Great first lesson! My son was very comfortable and excited to keep going.

Lydia was very welcoming and kind, and put me at ease during our first lesson. She knew I wanted to work on mallet percussion, and had a lesson plan ready for me on the marimba. She moved at a pace that worked for me, and I already feel as though I have learned some basics. I'm excited to continue my lessons with her!

I play and teach a variety of percussion instruments, including hand drums (congas, tubano, djembe, bongos), xylophone and other toned percussion, shaker-type instruments, tambourine, guiro, etc.
Percussion instruments are a great way to introduce very young children to playing music. In the past, I taught music classes to toddlers and preschoolers, with an emphasis on percussion. I have also taught percussion to teens and adults.

About Linda

I have been teaching music (guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, recorder, music theory, and classes for toddlers, preschoolers, school-aged children, and adults) for over 20 years. I am also a band/show director at the School of Rock! In addition to teaching music, I also tuto

Linda is awesome. After 3 lessons I'm getting pretty good at a couple of basic rolls and have a song to work on. She is patient and knowledgeable, and has helped me get basic technique going. So far so good.

I have formal training on congas (studied w/ Eguie Castrillo - Tito Puente's disciple, has performed with Jenifer Lopez, Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Sandoval Band, & many others)

Also extensively studied at Berklee as well as spent a month in Ghana, regarding traditional West African percussion, especially that of the Ewe people. But also Ga tradition - specifically, the kpanlogo drum.

Also extensively studied Brazilian percussion, was just down in Brazil a month ago.

I have experience also teaching bongos (used especially in bachata) and also djembe technique.

I can teach you a universe of rhythmic knowledge to create a deep architecture for you to excel in any percussion/rhythmic context.

My son enjoyed the lesson and wanted to practice right away.

Josh is always easy to be around and is able to form any lesson around what I wanted to do, as well as teach me loads of new ideas if I hadn’t planned anything. He has greatly helped improve my own production and give me insight into what professional producers do to set themselves apart. He’s great to work with and always in an uplifting mood.

I've got a drum set, a djembe, and a dumbek in my studio. Along with many shakers, a wooden fish, lots of sticks, tambourines.... We can start at the beginning of counting to four or work out of the the book Pure Rhythm by Adam Rudolph if you are really into advanced Polyrhythms.

About Peter Q

I'm a multi-instrumentalist from the Northwest with lots of love for teaching people to groove. I got my bachelor's degree in music from Whitman College with an emphasis in Jazz Performance. Peter is very easygoing and fun to work with. I was very pleasantly surprised and impressed how much we accomplished in our first 45 minute lesson. Look forward to continuing lessons with him!
Brenda N.
My first lesson was a lot of fun! Peter is great at helping you feel at ease and comfortable. I was extremely nervous and he was great with making me feel like I was right at home with a friend! I also appreciate that he is not rigid in his teaching techniques or format. He caters your lesson to what your learning desires are and is very good at recognizing your skill level (or lack of 😁). I also appreciate how encouraging he is. I’m super excited to continue on my Saxophone journey!
Owen
My child really enjoyed his first lesson with peter. Peter is a very talented musician and he made the lesson fun! My child seemed to learn a lot from just one lesson with peter and he enjoys practicing what he learned at home.

"My 9-year-old son, Luke, who is on the spectrum (PDD-NOS) studied with David for the better part of a year and the experience was terrific. In addition to being extremely communicative and reliable, David was kind and patient. David kept Luke focused and entertained while also inviting him to think about rhythm in ways that made sense to Luke's brain. We happily traveled from Inwood to "Downtown Brooklyn" for lessons because the level of instruction was that good and, I think, Luke's progress demonstrates that. Luke was bitten by the hockey bug, so we are taking a break from percussion right now, but I wouldn't hesitate to return to David's studio should time allow in the future."
