About Nicholas
Nick comes from a family of four generations of music in the GREEK/Balkan repertoire. He graduated from Columbia College of Chicago with a concentration in Music Composition in December of 2009. Currently teaching and performing professionally, Nick enjoys all styles of music, but has been declared as an "old soul" by many of his friends. He enjoys playing lots of Motown, funk, and jazz, but is proficient in Classical, Rock, and Blues as well. When not playing music (rarely), he is a Board member for the GivingBackPack Foundation which provides school supplies to underprivileged children. Nick's dedication to education is shown through his music and his personal volunteer hours, he feels his diverse background gives his students an advantage to a broader perspective of music and theory.

I hadn't played the trumpet in 30 years. My first lesson with Nicholas was like starting from scratch. He is very knowledgeable, polite, professional, and definitely patient. I feel that that homework Nicholas assigned was spot on. I'm playing better already after only two days. I would certainly recommend him to a friend.

Nicholas really tailored the lessons to what I needed. They weren't cookie-cutter lessons, and I appreciated that. He answered all the questions I had, and helped me understand some concepts that I never would have gotten just learning online. I definitely recommend him as a teacher.

Nicholas was very patient, took the time to write down information that was helpful (very helpful). Nicholas understood where I was in reference to me knowing nothing about the guitar and he is very knowledgeable with the music trade. He was very clear and kept things simple. My mission is to provide a positive musical experience for all students. For some this includes rigorous preparation for an audition of some kind, for others it may be an introduction to music fundamentals to foster better listening skills and greater artistic appreciation. All students will be challenged to improve their listening, timing, and technique. All students will learn to play songs that they love.

Recommendations for best results: make a three-month commitment to weekly lessons, and work up to 30 minutes of daily practice. This formula guarantees results. Bring your instrument, music books, and a binder with sheet protectors ☺

Jordan was born and raised in the El Centro, California where he began playing the alto sax in the elementary band program. At the age of 12, he began his study of guitar and drums, performing in several rock and ska bands around his home town and San Diego. At age 14, is where he found his love for brass instruments when he took up the trombone. While in high school he became a soloist with the Imperial Valley College Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of former Basie trumpeter Jimmy Cannon. That lead Jordan to accept the Constance Weldon Music Scholarship to attend the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL.

While performing in South Florida Jordan appeared with major acts including 10,000 Maniacs, and appeared on the Spanish television show "Calle Ocho." He also gained invaluable experience teaching in Miami public schools. His first teaching assignment was at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School where he directed 3 beginning bands, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and their highly decorated Jazz Band. Later Jordan moved into the elementary setting, teaching vocal and instrumental music for grades K-5 at Cypress Elementary.

In 2007, Jordan returned to California to pursue a music career in San Diego. He can be seen performing all over San Diego, Orange, and LA Counties in styles ranging from rock, jazz, funk, blues, hip-hop, Latin, and more. He performs primarily on trombone, piano, and guitar, but is known to pick up percussion, harmonica, and other wind instruments as well. Jordan, along with the rest of the aggressively funky cover band SuperMagnetic, were the grand prize winner of the 2010 Viejas Ultimate Music Challenge 4. In 2011, Tori Roze & The Hot Mess were nominated for a San Diego Music Award in the category of "Best Blues Artist" after the release of their first album "From The Hip." They released their second album "Turbulence" last December, and are heard regularly on local San Diego radio. This album has also been nominated for Best Pop album for the 2013 San Diego Music Awards. In 2013, Jordan completed his Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University.

On stage, Jordan is a talented and versatile performer. He is known for his trombone sound and improvisational ability, as well as his positive relationship with his fellow musicians. In lessons, Jordan is energetic and creative.

I enjoy teaching kids and adults of all ages. When you arrive for our first lesson, we'll start by getting to know your musical tastes and aspirations. Then we make a plan. Then we play!

Everybody's path is different, but we must start with a strong foundation in the fundamentals. After we start to establish some technique on your instrument we will explore music that suits you from a practical stand point in your development, and very importantly, stylistically. Together we will plan a curriculum that keeps you motivated toward your goals and that fits your life style.

My son is 8 and has been seeing Jordan for several weeks. Jordan started out by clapping out music, learning about pitch and timing etc instead of putting a guitar in my sons hand on day one and overwhelming him. My son left Jordan today and on the way home excitedly told me “I love seeing Jordan, my confidence grows every time I see him.” Those were his own words! Tomorrow we are purchasing him a real guitar and I see him being a great student because of Jordan’s patience and introduction to music the right way! Jordan began at the foundation and I feel has set the stage for great things for my son. Wonderful teacher!!

About Danilo
Danilo is a multi-instrumentalist originally from Long Island, New York and currently based in Rhode Island. He has maintained an active and successful performing career as a member of the groups David Wax Museum, Debo Band, The Superpowers, Rubblebucket, Full Tang and Watchout Kompa.

Danilo studied classical trumpet performance at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (Peter Chapman, Steve Emery) as well as percussion and drums with other esteemed faculty members (Rakalam Bob Moses, Jamey Haddad). In addition to his conservatory training, Danilo has studied traditional West African drumming at the Dagbe Cultural Center in Kopeyia, Ghana.

Danilo has performed at many of the premier venues and festivals throughout North America including: Bonnaroo, New Orleans Jazz Festi
val, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Bumbershoot, Montreal Jazz Festival, Montana Folk Festival, Globalfest, SXSW and Luminato.

Education has long been a passion for Danilo and he has been teaching private music lessons as well as instruction in the Boston public schools for years. Danilo teaches all levels and ages. His students value his patience and ability to find an inspiring path to discovery for each individual. Danilo has also shown himself to be very effective in the classroom setting. He has been a general music teacher in the Boston Public School system as well as teaching master classes and clinics at music schools and universities around the country.

In January 2014, Danilo was invited as a guest artist and educator at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Kabul where he taught and performed for young afghan music students.

Danilo considers his success as a performer to be in a direct relationship with the success of his teaching and he aims to spread to the joy of music making and appreciation as wide as possible.

My teaching style is relaxed and supportive while always aiming to increase the knowledge of the student. My strong technical background combined with a deep sense for wide-ranging musical styles allows me to find what inspires a student initially, and use their interests and strengths to lead them to new discovery and technical efficiency.

Danilo is a really great drum teacher. Challenging, but also meets you at what ever level you're at. When limbs don't know how to rally together for a new thing, he's a very good cheerleader until it comes together or helps make it make sense to break through that wall. Enjoys good music too. Super recommend.

Dr. Spaeth is currently working with Palen Music Center. He is also teaching at the University of Tulsa as an adjunct faculty member during Spring 2018. Spaeth maintains an online music studio through TakeLessons, where he teaches several instruments privately and in group settings including saxophone, guitar, oboe, music theory, flute, clarinet, and piano.

Dr. Carl Spaeth taught at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical beginning August 2017. His duties included graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class.

Prior to working at OSU, Spaeth was Instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University from 2014-2017. His responsibilities included directing the annual SDSU/Brookings Optim
ist Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles I-II, Jazz Combo, Jazz Improvisation lessons, Jazz Pedagogy, online Jazz Appreciation, private saxophone lessons, saxophone quartets, private oboe lessons, and group guitar class.

Spaeth completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance at the University of Kansas in 2014, and his Master of Music Pedagogy and Performance from Oklahoma State University in 2011. He graduated from Harrah High School in 2002, earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2008, and was a 5th-12th grade Head Band Director at Fairview Public schools. He is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Jazz Education Network, Music Teachers National Association, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Spaeth was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Spaeth was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Spaeth has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Spaeth went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Spaeth was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Spaeth was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Spaeth's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen, Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Spaeth performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr., Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Spaeth's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. Spaeth's jazz directors have included Dan Gailey, Bob McCurdy, Dr. Jonathan Martin, Dr. Keith Talley, and Dr. Terry Segress.

​Spaeth enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. His compositions that have been performed include his big band arrangement of Cat Battles by Joshua Redman, September in the Refrain (alto saxophone and electronics), Funk-o-matic (jazz combo), Smooth (jazz combo), and The Deadline Arrives at Dawn (alto saxophone and electronics). As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Spaeth performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Spaeth directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

​Dr. Spaeth is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Spaeth performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Spaeth performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale. In April 2017, Spaeth performed solo tenor saxophone and orchestral clarinet in Ethan Bortnick's national PBS Special called "Generations of Music," which featured special guest, Peter Yarrow, from Peter, Paul and Mary.

I have been teaching for the last 17 yrs as either a elementary or middle school band director. I have lead many of my students to All City Honors, superior ratings at Solo and Ensemble and alike. I am a woodwind specialist who can teach brass performance. Rachel is a fantastic teacher and tutor. Her expansive knowledge of music theory and ear training contributes to her vast musical ability. Not only is she a great performer, but she is able to break down the music and explain it in a variety of ways in order to effectively teach students at any level. Most importantly, Rachel is an advocate for students expressing their own musical voice. She will not tell a student exactly how to play a given piece, but rather she will teach them the necessary tools for the student to play well, and allow them to explore their own musical interpretation from there.

Outside of music, Rachel is a genuine and kind-hearted person. She is understanding and empathetic, and this carries over into her teaching as well. That being said, Rachel holds herself and her students to high standards. Students will hear improvement in their tone, technique, and musicality as they work with Rachel. I give her my highest recommendation for all subjects.

About Nolan
I am a student studying Trombone performance at Ohio University through the Honors Tutorial College. I play in several ensembles across campus as well as performing in a low-brass trio semi-professionally.

Students can expect weekly practice assignments and a structured plan for improvement. My lessons focus primarily on the nuances of trombone playing, but will also cover setting goals, effective practice habits, maintaining motivation, related music theory, and the professional world of music. Students studying with me will not only gradually improve their instrument performance, but they will also be exposed to the successful musicians of our age and their teachings synthesized into a private lesson curriculum.

My son is severly dyslexic and Nolan has been amazing. We used a different takelessons instructor for 6 months before we found Nolan and the difference in my son amd his level of playing has been substantial. We have been with Nolan for about 7 months, he is kind, patient, and very knowledgeable.

I have spent the last 35 years teaching elementary and middle school band in a community known for its strong music program.
I love teaching music to students.. especially the art of playing trumpet. I try to incorporate fun and enthusiasm in each lesson while accomplishing some short term and long term goals. The student is my ultimate focus during the lesson time. Sometimes my students arrive and have a total different idea of concepts or literature in which they wish to make progress different from what I had planned. We are always able to accommodate these shifts in plans while reaching our lesson goals.
I enjoy working with students in the middle school ages. I find that this is when they make the greatest growth. There is nothing better that seeing a child's face as the bulbs go off concerning musical concepts. I believe that together we can reach great heights in your musical development. I invite you to try s lesson and make music meaningful in your life.

Dr. Mealey was the man who taught me my very first lesson on the tuba oh so many years ago. I have since had the privilege of performing professionally in over 40 states and 30 countries around the world as a soloist and as a member of Boston Brass. The years of private lessons I took with Dr. Mealey gave me the perfect musical foundation to eventually pursue my dreams.

I still remember how much he cared for every single kid in each of his bands. There are people who are put on this earth to teach and he is one of those. I can't imagine how my life would have turned out if it weren't for Dr. Mealey.

I can't recommend studying with him any more highly.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Mealey for fourteen years, first as a colleague and then as his supervisor. Bob is a very skilled musician and teacher. He has had many years of experience bringing his students' performance levels to new heights. He works hard and expects the same from his students. This winning combination has helped to create some very skilled musicians, with many of them going on to enjoy playing in ensembles for many years.

It was always a pleasure to watch Dr. Mealey and his students perform in concert. The looks of joy were always evident with everyone in the house - members of the ensemble, its director, and the audience.

You can't go wrong with Dr. Mealey.

Dr. Mealey had a tremendous impact on all of my children. He truly instilled in them a love of music and gave them an opportunity to really experiment and express themselves. Because of their solid foundation with Dr. Mealey, they played throughout high school and some even into the college level marching band! Dr. Mealey is a class act and knows how to connect with his students!

I have been teaching for over 10 years. I teach beginners, intermediate and advanced students. I gave classes at universities and private lessons to music performance students preparing for jazz college auditions I work with them particularly jazz, classical and others. I also teach them jazz harmony, theory and jazz styles.

About Bulut
Bulut Gulen was born on July 16th, 1980 in Eskisehir (Turkey). He began his musical education at the age of 10, in a children’s choir. Soon after, he started taking piano and trombone lessons. In 1994, he was accepted in Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory. During his education he took part in concerts in Germany, Belgium, Macedonia, Netherlands, Luxemburg. He studied with Bedii Durham and Aycan Teztel. In 2004 he graduated from Istanbul University State Conservatory. He began playing with Istanbul Superband and he had the opportunity to play with this band to Dianne Reeves and Kurt Elling.

He won the first prize in MIAM Chamber Music Competition with Istanbul Trombone Ensemble and second prize in Edirne Chamber Music Competition with Ankara Trombone Quartet. in 2007 he won the World Scholarship Tour audition and was accep
ted to Berklee College of Music with full scholarship. In 2008 he won the Albert A. Natale performance award. In 2009 he won the Arif Mardin award. In 2008 he played with McCoy Tyner with Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra in Montreal Jazz Festival. He had the opportunity to play with Benny Golson in 2008 and with Steve Smith in 2010 with the same orchestra. Same year he weas selected to a quintet formed for Jack Dejohnette and had the opportunity to play with him. He performed with Boston Beantown Bigband, Eguie Castirillo Bigband, Christian Scott, Christian Karam and Berklee Jazz Revolition band in Canada, Newyork, Miami and Boston. Considered one of the legends of trombone history Phil Wilson defined Gulen in a radio program as "the young Turkish trombone player who impressed me the most lately"

Gulen took part in many music festivals. Istanbul, İzmir Jazz Festival, Kosova, Ankara, Montreal, Alanya and Akbank Jazz Festival are among them.
Between 2012 and 2014 he gave lessons in Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory Jazz Department. Since 2014 he is giving trombone performance lessons in Bahçeşehir University Jazz Department. Besides the many projects and concerts he took part he also worked for his own project. In 2015 Gulen's first album "SU" was released by A.K. Music which consists of his own compositions. The musicians who took place in the album are Şenova Ülker on trumpet, Önder Focan on guitar, Can Çankaya on piano, Engin Recepoğulları on tenor saxophone, Ozan Musluoğlu on bass and Ferit Odman on drums. Currently he is a master student at New England Conservatory in Boston.
