Alex provides helpful and thorough instruction in a great teaching environment

My son Steve had started playing the drums in 5th grade as part of the school music program, but at age 11 he wanted to start taking them more seriously, so my wife and I bought him a shiny new drumset for Christmas. Lo and behold, it sat in our basement for a year without being touched. Finally, we insisted he take a few lessons and start practicing on his set; after much arm-twisting, we got him to agree to take lessons from Alex for three weeks before giving up on music entirely. After the first lesson, Steve came home, set up his drumset, and practiced for 3-4 hours every night that week. Alex provided him with ample practice materials to get started, and also exposed him to lots of different music to inspire him. Last week Steve was talking about Roy Haynes and Art Blakey, names I hadn't heard someone say since my father passed away (he was a HUGE jazz fan). In several months, my son has progressed to the point where he has to choose which friends to jam with on Saturdays--he simply doesn't have time for all of them! I've seen it affect his studies too--through elementary and middle school, Steve was an average student that did what he had to to get by, but this year he has really turned it around, finishing all his assignments the day they're assigned and going out of his way to complete extra credit opportunities in his classes. I am sure this motivation will seriously help him as he enters high school, as long as he keeps playing the drums and getting lessons from Alex. Although most of our lessons are in Alex's well-equipped studio, a couple times we needed him to come to our house and it wasn't a problem at all; he was on time and brought necessary materials with him. Alex's lessons have had a major impact on not only my son's musical development but his life, and I would strongly recommend him to any parent looking for a drum instructor.

About David
I am a 20 year musician with 11 years teaching experience. Born and raised in New York City, I attended Laguardia high school for music and art and afterward Queens College majoring in music. My main instruments are Clarinet, Drums, and Saxophone, but i also have a strong background in Piano, Trumpet, and Flute. I've taken private music lessons for the past 15 years with world class musicians, among them David Weber and Howard Hirsch. I've performed in every major concert hall in New York City, including Carnegie Hall when i was only 11 years old. I performed alongside many famous musicians, including the late Tito Puente.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching includes all aspects of music; Musical theory, sight singing, as well as Music History. My teaching style allows the child to have fun while they learn their instrument, but I emph
asize a strong practice regiment. Your child will understand that while learning music and an instrument can be fun, there will be some work involved if they want to become great. I usually use either the Alfred or Rubank method books to supplement a curriculum that I tailor make for each individual student. Any question or confusion a student has about anything during the lesson will be explained in detail and dealt with until he/she understands the concept. I've had many students pass all levels of the ABRSM and NYSSMA exams as well as receive academic scholarships for musical excellence.

I have been playing drum kit and percussion for over ten years and teaching for about seven. I've played a little bit of everything - pop, rock, punk, hip-hop, ska/reggae, blues, jazz, and even musical theater. In addition to drum kit, I can play and teach hand drums (djembe and conga) in contemporary or traditional African, Latin, American styles. I'm happy to share my skills and expertise with drummers of all ages and skill levels.

About Gio
I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums.

I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is what I'm passionate about and it's what I enjoy. I want to inspire that same passion into the hearts and minds of others.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrument takes a lot of work and dedication. One can't expect to learn very much if s/he only practices or thinks about the instrument during the lesson. If the student is willing to put some time into practicing, then I will help them go far!

*** Studi
o Equipment ***
I have several guitars, a drum kit, djembe, mandolin, clarinet and full-size keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
Guitar: Classical, jazz, American or Irish folk, rock and pop; lead or rhythm.
Drums & Percussion: All genres
Piano: Classical (includes sight reading)

Drum lessons are taught one-on-one and from a beginner level to an advanced level. Ages of students start at 6-years-old and up. I have many adult students as well. It's never too late to start a new instrument.

About Rob
I have over 18 years of professional teaching experience on drum set, snare drum and percussion (timpani, two- & four-mallets, accessory percussion and hand drums), guitar, piano, electric bass and ukulele. I have been playing music since the age of two.

Some of my most noteworthy performances have included Late Show with David Letterman (Justin Townes Earle and Allison Moorer), Tonight Show with Jay Leno (Allison Moorer), Levon Helm'™s Midnight Ramble (Allison Moorer), The Conan O'™Brien Show (Julia Nunes) and Budokan in Tokyo, Japan (Jim Campilongo Trio).

My Bachelor of Music is from Capital University where I studied with three great teachers:
Robert Breithaupt - Classical percussion and jazz drum set
Jim Ed Cobbs - Drum set, tabla and frame drums
Eric Paton - Taiko, samba, Afro-Cuban drums

I treat
each student individually, catering to specific goals and needs that we will decide upon and plan together. Some students want to seriously study a craft. Others want a hobby that will be fun and interesting. I have had success teaching to both, and will impart basic fundamentals and musicianship to all types of students.

I see my primary job as keeping the student inspired, intellectually fed and sprinting in the right direction. The student's job is to do the work. Daily practice is essential to move forward in any craft.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My Brooklyn studio is a dedicated music space with two drum sets, PA, amplifiers and recording capabilities.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide books, a drum pad, sticks or mallets, an iPod with two sets of headphones, and a metronome. Additionally, I can bring small hand drums, special instruments and percussion that might be needed for specialty lessons. I expect students to have some sort of pad or drum to practice on at home; a full drum set is not necessary.

Rob was an awesome teacher and even better guy. The lesson environment was comfortable, but always focused and professional. He's clearly a hugely talented musician and has a ton to offer in the way of teaching; perhaps more importantly though, his love of music inspires the student to practice and learn. Very highly recommended.

I have 5+ years playing in many genres from singers-songwriter to various latin ensembles to eclectic rock bands on Cajon, Djembe, Conga, Bongo, and Frame Drum. Studied split-hand technique with world famous percussionist Jamey Haddad for 1 year on Frame Drum.

About Daniel
I'm a gigging musician and teacher who graduated from Oberlin College in May 2015 with a degree in Musical Studies and Physics. I was on the Division III tennis team there for two years as well. I pride myself on patience and empathy no matter what I teach, whether it feeling the pulse of a complicated drum groove or solving a challenging physics word problem. For music lessons, I strive to bring in a context of genre fluidity and history, so that a student knows where and what to explore on their own even when I am not in the room to show them. Overall, my teaching is all about inspiring students to do well and make their strengths work for them, rather than dryly coming up with the "right answer" or playing a tune the "right way" to get from point A to point B.

I teach all classical percussion instruments including snare drum, mallet keyboards (two and four mallets), drum set, orchestral accessories, timpani, and more! Percussion is a wide field and I will work with you to cover all of your bases while also helping you find which areas interest you most. Skills we will work on include fundamental techniques, sight-reading, music theory, memorization, improvisation, and listening exercises.

About Robby
Hi! My name is Robby and I am a drummer/percussionist based in Brooklyn. Since the age of fourteen, I have been teaching students in both recreational and career-focused contexts. Playing music is the most rewarding part of my life, and sharing that fulfillment with others is extremely important to me. I prioritize humor, empathy, and patience as crucial elements of music making.

As a teacher, I value the solidification of fundamentals as well as a strong focus on developing personal style and taste. Each person's relationship with music is unique, so I strive to help each student in developing techniques and routines that best suite their individual goals. My musical knowledge includes rock, pop, hip-hop, classical, jazz, electronic, and almost any other genre.

I am an active performer in the city and have a wealth of experience
to draw from. I am co-founder of an avant-dream band called Boio (with Finnegan Shanahan) and drummer of The Roofer’s Union. I also frequently play with projects like Alpenglow, Contemporaneous, Abbi Press, Goldfeather, and Echo Chamber, among other freelance gigs in the NY area. As a contemporary percussionist, I have worked with renowned artists like John Corigliano, Pascal Le Boeuf, Martin Creed, So Percussion, Jerek Bischoff, and more. Some of my performance highlights include appearances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, PASIC, The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, Park Avenue Armory, National Sawdust, Elsewhere (Hall), and EMPAC.

I can teach out of my studio in Downtown Brooklyn, online, or I am happy to meet you for lessons elsewhere if you have your own location with the instruments we need. I can teach drumset, classical & orchestral percussion, keyboard mallet instruments, early piano, and techniques in Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, and Garageband music softwares.

Whether you have no musical experience or have been practicing for a while, I am happy to work with you and figure out how to best reach your full musical potential. I look forward to meeting you!

I have been working with students of all ages and levels for over 26 years and have learned something meaningful from each and every one them. Nothing makes me happier when I see them getting into great schools and acquiring lucrative jobs that make them happy, My students walk away with tools to not just play a musical instrument but a skill set strong enough to tackle any task.
I am equally versed in performing on and teaching drum-set (Pop, Rock, Jazz, Latin etc...), all the percussion instruments of the orchestra (ask about my state of the art recording studio where all of these instruments live), and hand drums including congas, bongos, Djembe etc... Anything you can strike scrape or shake is available for study either online or at my studios.

As an instructor, David exudes the perfect balance of amiability and intimidation. He will inspire you to work your absolute hardest without scaring you away. Personality-wise, he is that happy medium somewhere between Mr. Rogers and J.K. Simmons in Whiplash. I studied with David during my college years and 7+ years later I still utilize his concepts in everyday practice. There are many specific stories, ideas and exercises of his that have always stuck with me and come up quite often when I am working on something new or teaching a lesson or class of my own. Whether we were learning orchestral excerpts, 4-way independence, Bach fugues or just playing quarter notes with the metronome, I always left our lessons feeling highly motivated and anxious to practice. It's also great to have a teacher that can blow your mind with his own playing. It might be difficult for some teachers to get students into something like the tambourine or triangle but when he picked one up and casually played some insane rhythms and advanced techniques I was immediately inspired to learn to do the same. Not to mention his drum work on Matt Herskowitz's "Forget Me Not" - some of the things he does on that record still keep me up at night. I'm very grateful for my time as a student of David's and glad I can still learn from him as a friend and colleague!

David is a world-class musician with the rare ability to communicate the most complex musical ideas clearly and simply to students of all ages. Within the first hour of the first lesson, David helped our son, then age 12, identify technical issues that were causing him problems and stripped away bad habits that were holding him back. With David's professional guidance in both drums and percussion, our son's progress has been remarkable. In our son's own words: “David is creative with a good sense of humor, which always makes lessons fun.” We cannot recommend him more highly.
