A lifelong musician and songwriter, Ian S. has extensive experience teaching guitar and piano to students age 3 and up both as a private music instructor and as a staff music instructor at the Institute of Music for Children. With 28 years of experience on the guitar and 32 years on piano, Ian has studied and performed with several award-winning music artists, and has written, recorded, and produced over one hundred songs. He plays and teaches a variety of styles on both the guitar and the piano, from classical to jazz to rock. Ian is patient, friendly, and loves sharing the gift of music.

We just had our first lesson with Keith. Keith is a wonderful instructor. He is very patient to 6 years old daughter and he tailors the lesson to fit her. He challenges her without making her feel uncomfortable.

I have taught for 18 years, giving both private and group lessons. I am a professional musician, having played in numerous bands, recorded and played shows. I have taugh all ages, and all elvels, and all styles. I play a number of instruments including piano, guitar, bass, violin, banjo, mandolin, and harmonica, in addition to writing and singing. I took private lessons for over 10 years, and also studied music in both high school and college.
*** Lesson Details *** A student can expect to be treated with respect, and have a lesson tailored around their abilities, interests, and amount of practice time. After 3-6 months, the student will be playing songs, good ones, not just scales. They will also have learned basics, such as chords and scales, as well as sight reading.

*** Travel Equipment *** I provide all lesson materials, listening examples, and, on occassion, an instrument. I often use my laptop to play songs and tutorials for students (who don't buy records like we did in the old days.) Generally, students must provide instrument.
*** Specialties *** I tailor my lessons based on three factors: a student's interests, their ability, and their amount of practice time. I do not use a cookie cutter method of teaching because each student is different. I have studied, formally and informally, rock, pop, blues, jazz and classical. My specialties are rock and blues. On occasion, I will use method books, such as the Schirmer books for piano, but only if the student clearly seems to benefiting from them.
There are a million ways to write songs. I'm a librettist for a few composers and can help you find words and ways to feel and hear words. We can work in rhymed and open unrhymed song writing. You can write from your dreams, your rage, your unhappiness, your love and fulfillment, from nature. Idealism, Disappointments. It is all excellent source. We shake it up and keep at it. It's super fun.
I am in New York City and accepting new students as well as reconnecting with anyone who wants to return. I have two graduate degrees: one in Music and the other in Dance and Theater studies. My undergraduate degree is from The Juilliard School, in Dance.

To help a dance student make their own dances is very fulfilling. I also teach choreography or composition. One of the aspects of dance composition that has recently captivated me is the composing of sound and music for the dance that is also being made. Using software, we can explore electroacoustic as well as language and text collage as sound score for your dance. It is super fun!!!
For the Visual Arts I teach Abstract Painting as well as Installation and Performance Art. *** Studio Equipment *** I have supplies and space. Visual Art students need to contribute to materials by finding or purchasing whatever they like and adding to the mix. My students are welcome to use what I have here and I am always adding materials. Many people throw away materials that are perfectly good for art making so keep your eyes open and you'll find all kinds of good things. Visual Art students need to book a 2 hour minimum and I will lower the price if you just let me know you need it.
My fees: I start at a higher fee and after you've been a regular student we can lower the fee for you if you need.

*** Specialties *** In dance I teach classical ballet principles for beginners or those who are returning and want to work carefully and privately. I teach from the tradition of Alfredo Corvino's principles of relationship to organic forms and structures for sound development. I studied with Mr Corvino for years and continue to study with Ernesta Corvino. For acting I teach a combination of classical acting technique with American sense memory and relaxation skills. I am well versed in the teachings of Lee Strasberg and then spent time in London to 'fill in the cracks' of my training with analytical skills as well as the various european influences that the Royal National embrace. I teach creative discovery in combination with classical devices so the student can discover their own artistry while learning actual classical devices for accomplishing specific goals.
Since 2005 I have been composing music for a wide variety of ensembles and artistic platforms. Whether it be for a choreographed dance number, brass quintet/chamber music, or jazz orchestras, I've been able to hone my arranging and scoring capabilities to enable me to adapt any song, or write my own to suit any situation.
All songs have basic building blocks that make them songs. You will become familiar with these, and learn to wield them, in order to create your own. We'll look the music of many different genres, and extrapolate what you like from each; in this way your writing, no matter what style of music it's in, will reflect a depth and character that only the best musicians throughout time have been able to achieve.

I perform and record as a featured musician with Festival of New Trumpet Music, having participated in two world premieres, and in ensembles led by highly acclaimed and/or Grammy-nominated/winning artists such as Steve Coleman, Henry Cole, Maria Schneider, Darcy James Argue, Orrin Evans, Josh Evans, Jimmy Greene, Tyshawn Sorey, Eric Bergen and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. I've performed at arenas, clubs, and concert halls alike, such as Carnegie Hall, The Putra World Tower, Symphony Space, the Barclay's Center, Dizzy's Club Coco-Cola, and Rockefeller Center to name only a few venues. As a leader, I've been performing original music all over NYC at known creative and jazz venues like Seeds, Cornelia St. Café, The Bar Next Door, Jazz at the Kitano, Shapeshifter Lab and Smalls Jazz Club, which Down Beat magazine considers to be two of the best jazz clubs in the world.
Besides professing a passion and skill-set for music within the ‘jazz’ idiom, my interest in and usage of sound draws from and many other forms of art. I've composed and arranged music for lyricists, improvised music for poetry readings at the Firehouse Space, and have provided musical accompaniment for dance classes, workshops, and performances presented by the Martha Graham Dance Academy and the Jeoffrey Ballet School. I've even co-choreographed short plays and have played for Marc Jacobs fashion runway shows.
My music also extends into the health and wellness community. I've served as a regular performer at the New Life Expo, and as a musical aid for art exhibitions (including a Syrian-post war realist art exhibition), Yoga classes at Jivamukti Jersey City, and meditation classes for WeWork, St. Peter's Church at the Citicorp Center, The Tibet House, Triskelion Arts the Firehouse Space, the Jewish Community Center, the New York Insight Meditation Center, and the NYU Skirball Theater.
As an educator, I have taught all-level/all-age group music playing and appreciation courses for several New York-based organizations: The Afro-Latin Jazz Academy, The Gramercy Brass Orchestra of New York, New York Ensemble Classes, the Lyceum Kennedy International School, Jubilee Enrichment Programs, Jazz Empowers and The New York Jazz Academy. I have also completed 6 semesters of service as a Graduate Part-Time Instructor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where I taught multiple playing ensembles as well as three semesters of a 100+ student History of Jazz lecture class for non-majors.
I teach out of a my home apartment studio on the upper east side, complete with weighted 88-key digital piano, Bose high quality speakers, recording equipment, as well as musical media, and tablature spanning many musical genres, cultures and time periods. I also am equipped with a spacious floor space for Yoga, Pilates, Weight Lifting, Meditation, and more.

Concetta is a NYC based violinist, strings specialist and composer. She writes original art songs inspired by natural science, folk tales, poetry and everyday objects and sounds. She released her first solo album entitled Falling in Time in February 2015 on Waterbug Records. She was a visiting composer in residence at TAKT gallery in Berlin both in 2014 and 2016. In 2018 she co-composed a dance composition for the Wendy Osserman Dance Company. Concetta is most known for her collaborative work with poet Cornelius Eady (Kattywompus Press), musical instrument builder Skip La Plante, photographer Vera Comploj and Latin music band Inti and the Moon (Intiluna Records).
Concetta is the musical director of a music education non-profit called "Teacup Music". She holds a masters degree in Music and Music Education at Columbia University and has
received grants from the Rauschenberg Foundation, Department of Cultural Affairs, Brooklyn Arts Council, the Charles Mayer Foundation as well as The Roothbert Fund.
She loves dogs, hiking, cooking and gardening! She tailors her private lessons to individual students goals and needs.

My name is Chris B. and I've been playing music for most of my life.
The best lesson that I've personally learned is that a musician is never done learning. Once you start believing that you know everything there is to know about your instrument then you've stopped growing musically. Personally, I've also learned that I enjoy sharing my knowledge of music with others and exposing students to new techniques and concepts.
I strongly believe that these traits are the most important aspects of teaching music to others. No matter how advanced my playing skills might progress, I’ll always be able to relate to any type of student because I’m still learning something new everyday!
