So far, I have had only one lesson with Dr. M., the only singing lesson I've had in my entire 66 years of a lifetime. My only regret, is that I did not take them sooner. Dr M. is patient, an expert, and motivational. What more could you ask for when working with a teacher. He thinks he can make a singer out of me; I'll have to trust his judgement. It would be awesome, if he achieves our goal.

I enjoy keeping lessons fun and engaging, and putting a creative spin on each of the lessons I teach--anything that can encourage my students to put their own personality into our lessons as much as they express it on their instrument. I often incorporate games into lessons, and I tailor my approach according to how I get to know each student. I have over three years experience with teaching privately. I have worked with students of all ages and backgrounds; this includes children ages 7 and up, adults, senior citizens, and children with special needs. I am originally from Skokie, IL, I received my bachelor's degree in trombone performance from Indiana University-Bloomington, and will begin my master's degree in trombone performance at Boston University. Outside of playing music I enjoy reading Cormac McCarthy novels, running, and watching "Stranger Things".

I'm a very flexible teacher. Whatever you feel that you need to work on, we will work on. Currently, I am taking lessons from Steve Turre at Juilliard. He has performed with many jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and J.J. Johnson. If you're interested, I wouldn't mind teaching you some of the things I am learning here at Juilliard.

"Mr. Gary has been teaching our son trombone for a few months now and we have been delighted with his teaching.
Mr. Gary is very patient with our son, and has ignited a real love of the instrument and given our son confidence. He never gets short and is always calm and encouraging, even when our son is not into it at all.
He teaches the fundamentals of breath, playing musically and how to take care of the instrument.
Mr. Gary is always encouraging and positive, and that helps to encourage a love for the music and instrument. Our son has definitely taken to the trombone and a lot of that is due to Mr. Gary's great teaching."

"My skype lesson with Sam was one of the most insightful musical experiences I've had in regards to educating myself about the craft of trombone playing. Not only is his remarkable prowess at the instrument itself apparent but his knowledge of musical harmony and overall artistry allows all of his expert advice to come full circle and become even more impactful. His teaching style was incredibly supportive and effective and with clear and concise input I feel like I can very easily implement the information he gave me into my own playing. From the nuances of trombone technique to the intricacies of complex musical harmonies and progressions, Sam is more than capable of instructing students of all ages and skill levels. I would absolutely recommend Sam to anybody who wants to study music/trombone seriously or even is just getting started and wants to build a strong foundation. I can't wait until my next online lesson!"

"I played the trombone when I was a kid but lost interest back then. After not playing for about 15 years Billy helped me to get back to it. We covered reading notes, learning a little bit about music theory (keys etc) and of course playing. I wanted to practice with some songs I like and Billy was able to write the notes down for me. This was super helpful and really made me enjoy playing the trombone again! We practiced in a room in the New School, which was cool since I could play as loud as I wanted, compared to back at home where I usually use a mute. He was very patient and friendly and I can highly recommend him as a teacher."
