*** Lesson Details *** I encourage my students to pursue all types of music. I like to use “method books” to help with reading and music theory no matter which instrument they choose. I always use supplemental materials that follow the student’s interests and level. I often use technology in lessons to motivate and help students grow. For example, I use many apps for theory, note reading, and rhythm training.
A cancellation 24hrs in advance is always appreciated.
Matt taught me for a 3 month period and helped me drastically with learning how to improvise guitar solos. I can't thank Matt enough for his help in helping me with a rather unorthodox time to start getting lessons. Each week he told me to bring 3 songs with a guitar solo I would like to learn in different genres and each week we broke down the solos for me to practice and gather their techniques. Thank you so much Matt!

My 9 year old son had his first session yesterday, and he loved it. Matthew is great, responsive and especially patient! My son is looking forward to having more sessions!

Matt is an amazing instructor. I highly recommend him.
I approach drum set from a rudimental stand point. I like to start my students off just working on their hands and then over time I incorporate the drum set itself more and more. Usually after about two months of studying with me, the student is on the set for the majority of the lesson.
The styles I specialize in would include mostly rock with some jazz and latin styles as well.
Alex was born May 31, 1987. Since both of his parents were band directors, he grew up in a very musically inclined family. When he was 15 years old, during his freshman year of high school, he started studying percussion. A year later he began studying under Chad Kohler and continued to do so until 2009. During spring semester of 2009 he studied briefly under Richard Walker at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). In the fall of that year he then transferred to Butler University for an academic year and studied under Craig Hetrick and Jon Crabiel.
Beginning in 2011 Alex began studying attending University of Indianapolis and is currently studying under Paul Berns as well as Art Reiner. In addition to studying with them he has also went back to continue to study with his mentor Chad Kohler. In the time since Alex gr
aduated high school, he has been continuously presented with teaching opportunities. At the time, though, music was not looking like the best course of action for him. With the aid of Chad Kohler, Alex then began getting more involved with teaching percussion. Alex eventually went on to arranging his own parts for his students, as well as composing original percussion ensemble pieces. Alex is currently pursuing his Master's Degree in Music Technology at IUPUI.
In the time since he has been out of high school, he has taught at a number of schools including the Lynhurst 7th & 8th Grade Center, North Putnam Jr./Sr. High School, Broad Ripple Magnet School for the Arts & Humanities, and Lawrence Central. He has also taught at Arlington High School and Short Ridge High School.
When it comes to teaching music, what is known to be as the “Holy Trinity” comes to mind. While teaching I personally believe that it is important to challenge students just enough so that they are not discouraged and are still able to have fun.
The Holy Trinity plays a big role in this. What it consists of is embracing your students from all angles. This would be from ensembles and private lessons, which in turn then encourage them to practice. Ensemble, private lessons, and practicing are the three main categories that make up the “Holy Trinity.” And in using this, you can also be more involved with your students as well. It is always a good idea be friend your students as well and not just be the “teacher.” There is a great quote that goes like this, “They will never care about how much you know, until they know how much you care.” In which case has been proven to be very true time and time again.
It is important as a teacher to be able to inspire your students and to encourage them. Which is why I think it is important to be a good friend as well to your students. This way a kind of trust is formed and in turn can easily lead to the success of a music program. Also I do believe that it is important to expose students to as many forms of music as possible. This way they are not just stuck in one kind of mind set and if they choose to go into music for their career, then they have many different experiences they can pull and relate from. Plus they will also have some more knowledge of different cultures and music genres that can help not only create better music but also be more overall worldly in their personal life out side of music. Being able to learn about music is very important, and can easily impact a student’s life in many different ways that most subjects just do not have the capability to. This is what I believe about learning music and why I also love to teach it. I want my students to be able to have all the same great experiences I have had and more. Which is why I personally believe so heavily in a good music education.
*** Lesson Details *** Although the approach to teaching that I use comes across as being pretty laid back, I do expect what some might consider to be a lot out of my students. This is because I want to make sure that my students will be successful as musicians.
While a student is studying with me; they will learn about percussion from multiple angles. They will learn and be able to understand many basic music theory terms and principles. They will also learn how each percussion instrument is tied to one another in technique and how to easily transition from instrument to instrument.
Depending on the age of the student, after about three months of studying with me, the student will know a few major scales, most of the standard American rudiments, and some basic drum set concepts. After 6 months, the student will know all 12 major scales, be familiar with all 40 snare drum rudiments, and know a good portion of basic drum set.
Please keep in mind that results may vary depending on the age of the student and the amount of practicing they do on their own. Results also depend upon whether or not they are practicing correctly, which is something they will also learn how to do with me.
*** Studio Equipment *** In-studio lessons in basement with acoustic drum set. Street parking or drive way. Seating available for parents.
Lessons at the High School will be in the band room with their equipment.
*** Specialties *** I mostly specialize in marching percussion as well as 2 and 4 mallet percussion.
ALEX IS THE BEST! He’s actually become a friend of

Alex is Very knowledgeable. He was great with my 13-year-old daughter. She learns a lot from him and really enjoys working with him. He is very good teacher and very patient. I like the fact that he gives her specific homework to work on. I look forward to working with him for a long time.
I have been teaching for 40 years and have had many students go on to professional careers in music, and many that didn't. My main philosophy is to impart the joy of music making to my students. I take a student through all phases of drumming and/or percussion performance. I can teach beginners or high school students preparing for college auditions. I tailor what I teach to each student on an individual basis after assessing their needs and what they want.
I am available for SKYPE lessons. I have been the Assistant Principal Timpanist and Percussionist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra since 1992. I have also been an Adjunct Professor of Percussion at Butler University since 1995, and have been a frequent Guest Lecturer at IU's Jacob's School of Music. Prior to the ISO I spent many years as a drum set player including playing for Matthew Morrison (Glee), Idina Menzel (Glee, Rent,etc..), Marvin Hamlisch, touring Europe with the American Youth Jazz Band, touring the US with Johnny Mathis, Perry Como, and Jimmy Dorsey. Also played for 4 years in the University of Delaware Jazz Band, Dominic Spera's Jazz Band at Indiana University, playing literally thousands of gigs with Al Cobine, Cathy Morris, Jim Farrelly, weddings, the Jazz Kitchen, Chatterbox, rock bands, etc I hold a Bachelors d
egree from the U of Delaware, a Masters from IU, and Performers Certificate from IU, all in percussion performance. Teaching is a passion of mine, and I want to teach more from my home rather than Butler or IU. I love teaching students of any age and level of playing!
Kevin J. has been writing, recording, and playing music for over 25 years. Music is meant to be fun and it is his goal to help others enjoy music. He has been a teacher for 11 years and has composed hundreds of songs. He is passionate about teaching his students the songs they want to learn, no matter the difficulty. He specialized in guitar, drums, and song writing.
Kevin has a great way of encouraging others to keep going no matter what challenge is in front of them.
I truly enjoy teaching. I've taught in the public school classroom for 11 years. Teaching music is so so much FUN! And it should be fun for the students to learn. When I'm teaching I tell all my students that if they don't enjoy and smile about something, then we need to change something.
Kevin is an enthusiastic and professional teacher! He has built up my son's confidence, and given him opportunities to perform and hone his percussion skills. I highly recommend Kevin!

I was out of town when my 15-year old son had his lesson with Kevin, so I sent a text to my son to find out how it went. "He is the best guitar teacher ever!!" my son replied. I think that says it all.
March 29, 2017
First lesson was great! On the drive home Ava said, " I'm so excited I feel like I could run a marathon!"
Haha Thank you Kevin!
You've got to walk before you can run, so I focus on the basics. But, the basics can be a lot of fun! Especially once we start to apply them to your favorite songs, and being creative with them - that's kind of what it's all about!
Learning to play an instrument is a mixture of a lot of fun, and a lot of hard work. My strength is finding what will inspire my students to WANT to put in those difficult hours of practice, and then showing them how to apply what they have learned in a creative way, so that they experience the fun that music is supposed to be.
I help my students set - and reach - achievable goals. Learning this skill teaches them self esteem and also helps them discover their own learning style - a valuable tool, even if they do not pursue a career in music! I am gentle, but honest when a student arrives for a lesson unprepared, and am equally honest and enthusiastic when they demonstrate that they have put forth the effort to succeed.
I am not accepting many students, so that I can keep my schedule very performance heavy. This makes me a bet
ter teacher, and means that I only retain students who really want to progress.
I have been a drummer/percussionist in the Indianapolis music scene for nearly forty years. I regularly perform with the top players in many different genres and have played and recorded in a wide variety of venues and musical situations. In addition to playing my first instrument: the drum set. I also perform on various instruments, including: steel pan, vibraphone, and congas. I have extensive experience as a teacher beginning 30 years ago teaching at IRC music and Carmel Music Center.
My music education followed the classic route of mentoring under a local expert while working professionally. I studied for 16 years with Charles Mastropaolo (drummer for the Ed Sullivan show, and local jazz great) and was trained by him in improvisation, rudimental drumming, score reading/interpretation, Latin drumming, vibraphone, and performing all styles on the drum set. I have also been a member of the vibraphone workshop online teaching community for nine years. As a member, I have been able to further my education on all mallet instruments by online lessons with some of the top vibraphone players in the world. I look forward to working with you!
Amazing, patient really informative instructor and just a great guy. Highly recommend.

Mike was really the best instructor I could have asked for. Knowledgeable, patient, and best of all, chill when he needed to be. I was just picking up the drums for a high school band I was in at the time, and he was more than willing to help me learn whatever dumb song me or my band had decided sounded cool at the time. At the same time, he showed me a lot of really excellent practice techniques, directed me to some solid literature for different rhythms to work on, and would sit with me through a whole hour of my relentless mistakes like it was nothing. More than a good instructor, he's a really cool guy! He never missed a beat!

In 2016, I was credited as Christian Bale’s drum coach for Paramount Pictures’ The Big Short. I taught Batman to play the drums and he taught me how to pull a punch—true story!
Our son has been taking drum lessons from Jesse for over a year now. We are amazed at his progress and so pleased that he has deve
loped another interest outside of sports that will provide him life balance. Jesse's teaching style keeps kids interested and motivated. The various things he is working on challenge our son weekly. He struggles with a new rhythm and then after practicing it is able to figure it out. I think that weekly feeling of accomplishing something through practice is such a good lesson for our kid! Each time we ask him if he wants to continue with lessons he says "Yes!" Thanks Jesse!"
Having no previous experience with drums and playing along with my favorite songs in few weeks is pretty amazing. Casey is easygoing and
has a great ability to teach in a fun way. I definitely enjoy learning from this skilled musician!"
"Great instructor, very knowledgeable and friendly."
"My great nephew has been taking drum lessons and he loves the lessons and is making really good progress. Andrew makes all the difference. He engages and
encourages Gage to continue and he is fun."
"Mike is one of the best drum instructors out there. I've been taking lessons with him from middle school, and he has helped me succeed to become the jazz
drummer and drum captain at Marina High School. Mike understands several different styles: rock, jazz, Latin, metal, and more. In addition, he teaches students the proper technique, rudiments and how to read sheet music. Most importantly, Mike stands out from other instructors because he spends time trying to understand his students' interests and incorporates them into his lessons. He is very outgoing and energetic, so his lessons are always fun and educational. Overall, I highly recommend him because he challenges and inspires his students to become better drummers."
"tom is a great teacher
tom is as good as a drummer as he is a teacher. i have only had a few lessons with tom and can now play to songs that i thought i
would never be able to play to. Tom has both inspired me, and put in the right direction, for this i recommend tom to any body."
"Michael has been teaching drums to my 6-year-old son for the past 5 months. He has been really great to work with. My son loves going to his lessons, wher
e he always has fun. Michael's demeanor is perfect for my son, keeping the lesson light and breezy in tone, but making sure he is always learning proper technique and advancing his skills.
Michael is very flexible, always working with us to adjust the schedule when needed. We rented drums at first (which we were able to do through Michael - I asked, he provided; no pressure sales), but when we were ready to purchase, he helped us find the right set. Michael even helped us get a reduced price through a local music store.
I can't say enough good things about our experience with Michael. The best testimony that I can give is that my son loves to practice his drums every day, without having to be asked!"
"Relaxed, novel lesson that has kept me thinking."
"Started my lessons with Mike having some previous experience, but still a beginner. He broadened my knowledge on styles and helped me get to the point to
where I was able to join a band and start gigging."
