Specializing in teaching beginners. Can also help more advance students prepare for auditions, and work with advanced curriculum.

About Derrick
Derrick began playing the drums at the age of 8 in the elementary school concert band. He started out on just a snare drum but when he was 12, he got his first real drum set, and started a life of music.

Fast forward a few years and Derrick had experience playing in jazz bands, marching bands, concert bands, steel pan calypso band, along with his local garage band. After high school, Derrick moved to California to attend the Musicians Institutes in Hollywood California. There he studied under some of the greatest professionals in the business, and was exposed to a wide variety of music styles ranging from, Latin, R&B, Jazz, Funk, Rock, etc.

After graduating from school, Derrick moved back to Chicago where he has been playing weekly gigs, and touring around the country with his bands. Derrick is a young, energetic, but most importa
ntly, patient drummer, who loves to share his craft with the world.

*** Lesson Details ***
Derrick is laid back in his teaching style, but expects all of his students to practice and make weekly progression. He uses time tested and proven books and methods to teach his students the mechanics, theories, and techniques it takes to be a world class drummer. Reading and snare exercises are an important part of the curriculum, but not the main focus. He likes his students to enjoy what they are doing, so he brings other things to the lessons such as fun endurance and rhythm games. A brand new student that is dedicated to practicing could expect to be learning their favorite songs in 3 months time, and be playing in bands shortly afterward.

*** Studio Equipment ***
All pro gear! Ludwig, Dw, Pearl, Mapex, Zildjian, Sabian and more. Multiple drum kits set up in the studio, along with sound system, and mac book pro.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will bring lesson material (books, sheet music, etc.) and iPod with apps such as metronome and the ability to listen to music. Isolation headphones to listen to songs while playing along. Stick, brushes. Anything else I might need.

Students are expected to have drum sticks a music stand and at very minimum a practice pad, all though a drum set is preferable.

*** Specialties ***
Drum set is my specialty. I have experience with all major styles of music, and can teach any style. Other emphasis on playing in a band and percussion.

Great teacher!

Great with my daughter (age 7). She looks forward to her lesson every week, and is learning rapidly. He has great patience and has gotten to know my daughter and listens to her feedback while at the same time offering encouraging instruction.

Great Drum Teacher

My daughter had been taking private drum lesson for years before she started with Derrick. At the first lesson, Derrick told her how important it was to feel the music, other than just working on technique. That was exactly what she needed to work on. Derrick has a broad experience with playing different type of music. He likes to show her how to play, which helps her understand right away. He is very nice and patient. He is flexible and reliable in terms of lesson schedules. He uses lots of references, songs and exercises in his teaching. Now, my daughter enjoys her lessons and practices a lot more.

My child and I both share a love of drums. Unfortunately I wasn't very good at it, well at least til Mike came along. Now my son is in a band and I get to jam with them during practice. All thanks to you Mike. The take home DVD's as well really enhanced. This way we could go over what he just learned. Rock on buddy!!

About Will
I play, write, record and perform a variety of American popular music forms
including rock, folk, blues, funk, bluegrass, country, fingerstyle
guitar, and jazz.

I began my musical training learning drums as a 12 year old and a year later began private lessons on guitar as well. In the following years, while playing in rock bands and focusing primarily on guitar and continuing practice on drums, I became interested in learning other instruments: I took harmonica lessons and taught myself how to play bass guitar and keyboards. As a teenager I also began writing my own songs and teaching myself how to record music. I also play Spanish flamenco guitar and studied with master flamenco players while living in Madrid, Spain.

Today, I play guitar, harmonica, sing and write songs for my own group, while also working on a variety of othe
r recording projects that reflect my various musical personalities. I love everything about music, and there's nothing I enjoy more than sharing music with others, whether that be playing in a group, going to a concert with a friend, or talking about music with one of my students. One of my greatest joys is seeing others get involved in the world of music by learning to play an instrument, so I take great pride and responsibility in teaching my students and I hope to make that experience as positive and rewarding as it can be for everyone I work with.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am happy to work with students of any age regardless of prior experience or ability. Music is the universal language. Everyone is welcome.

Check out my new song samples for a taste of what I do. All instruments, vocals and production done by me at my home studio.

My approach:
I take a multi-disciplinary, multi-instrumental approach to teaching music. I feel that today's students are very interested in learning more than just one instrument, style or discipline. One of my greatest assets as a teacher is that I can play and teach guitar, bass, drums, harmonica, keyboards, songwriting, and audio production/engineering, or any combination thereof, to a student that is interested in becoming more than just a guitar player.

That being said, my musical experience centers primarily on the guitar, and that's where I prefer to start teaching my students. And if you only want to learn guitar, we'll just stick with guitar. However, if you want to learn other instruments too (guitar and drums; guitar, bass, and harmonica; guitar, keys and drums; etc.) we will work together to create a program that allows you to achieve all of your musical goals in time.

No matter what, the bottom line is this: you determine the direction of your musical education. The first time we meet, we will talk about your musical interests and goals, and from that conversation I will design a curriculum that fits your personality, needs and desires. I work with each of my students to determine and constantly refine his or her path, and as we follow your path I will work to give you all the tools needed to pursue your goals...and if I can't give them to you I'll help you find someone who can. I know my limits as a musician and teacher and I will always be honest with you about those things. For example, if you decide you want to be a jazz guitarist, I can get you started on that path, but once you advance beyond my limits (I love jazz, but it's not my forte), I will help you find a teacher who better fits your needs and goals.

Finally, I have always felt that music should be fun and there's no reason that learning to play an instrument can't be fun too. That doesn't mean it won't be hard work, because, like anything else in life, as you get deeper into music it will not only become more rewarding, but more challenging too. Still, it should always be fun. I understand that each student is unique and what "fun" means for one student may be different for another, and so we will work at your pace and according to your goals and desires to create a program that is ideal for you.

My Method:

I use a variety of teaching techniques and tools in my lessons and will cater those tools toward the needs of each student. You don't need to read music to learn how to play an instrument, but I do use a number of simple, easy-to-learn written methods in my teaching. More importantly, I encourage my students to learn how to "hear" music so that as they advance they can begin to teach themselves how to play the things that they hear. Therefore, much of my teaching method focuses on seeing, hearing and feeling the music...this is the way almost all popular music has been taught and learned since the beginning of time, and with the right supplement of written methods I think it still comprises the most effective way to become a complete musician.

I can also record every lesson for my students and make the recording available as a CD or mp3 via email so that you can listen to the lesson as you practice on your own at home.

Additionally, if you are interested in songwriting or audio recording, we can incorporate lessons on those subjects into your curriculum as well. Understanding both is an essential part of being a well-rounded musician in any genre these days and both fields can open up wide worlds of expression and artistry to those willing to delve into them. I am passionate and knowledgeable about both songwriting and recording.

About Steven
I have been studying and performing music for 20+ years. After majoring in music at College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn IL, I went to step up my level of study at the Percussion Institute of Technology (P.I.T.) at Musician's Institute in Hollywood, CA in 2001 attaining a Performance Certificate from my time studying there.

Moving back to Chicago after L.A. in 2002 proved to be the right move as this is when I began my teaching career. With 13+ years of private and group music instruction experience, I have worked with Hix Brothers Music, Naperville Music, Roselle Music, Streamwood Park District, Roselle Park District, Schaumburg Park District, After School Enrichment Solution's Guitar Stars, Band For Today, Guitar Fundamentals, Chicago Guitar Instruction, Schaumburg Music Academy, Music Makers of Western Springs, Clarendon Hills Music Ac
ademy, and also maintain a private clientele. Well into a thousand lessons taught, students have stayed with me for up to 7 years. You, the student, will gain all the experience I have gained from my 20 years of study, performance, and instruction.

Performing with various bands in the 2000's, I pinpointed my style and mastered my technique that gave me many performance opportunities regionally and nationally, noting most current act U2 tribute Vertigo USA.

I am co-founder of the music licensing production company Blue Shade Music, co-writing with astute musicians in the Chicago area for music libraries in Florida and California currently.

With national and international touring experience, I was featured in an exclusive interview for Online Drummer in August of 2011 sharing my knowledge and experience of music and drums.

Thank you for reading, and I hope to have a fun and educational time with you!

Not only can I teach you how to play the drums, I can help you learn to understand them as well. That includes more than just reading music and playing beats; it's exploring rhythmic techniques together, learning the fundamentals of tuning, and helping you discover your sound. Furthermore, as lessons progress, I can help you challenge yourself by performing and recording alongside other instruments as well (per request and at absolutely no extra charge).

Please remember that everyone processes things differently, and there is no right or wrong way to learn.

Everybody operates differently, so we will work together to find the best way for you to achieve your goals. With every student, we will begin our introduction by creating a curriculum together, so we can always be on the same page with learning the things you both need AND want to, without missing any of the good stuff!

I took weekly lessons from Eric for over 4 years. I had very little experience playing the drums, but a lot of desire to learn. I couldn't have chosen a better instructor than Eric.
He taught me how to read music, and always wrote out practice drills which really helped me in learning the overall lessons. Eric is extremely perceptive, and can immediately recognize what his students do well and wrong. By isolating specific parts of the lesson that causes difficulty, Eric creates drills that make learning the new part easier and more fun.
He will also play the part for you to give you an idea of how it should sound.
Because of Eric, I have learned numerous styles of drumming and the principles behind them.
Eric is a cool guy with an easy going personality, but he will always challenge you to do your best.
I strongly recommend him to anyone interested in learning how to play the drums.

I started off taking drum set lessons with Eric a little less than a year ago with almost no experience with percussion besides a basic understanding of music theory and little bit of practice with rudiments. When I started off, I could barely keep a beat and now I'm learning some really awesome Jazz patterns hoping to get into Lane Tech's Jazz band next year. The lessons usually go with review and/or a show-of-progress with the prior weeks material and then we know whether or not we should keep practicing the material or move on. If I've got it down then well move on to some new groves which he will write out for me and then show me how they sound and give me some tips for practicing the grooves for the week. I honestly have to say that Eric has been really motivating and encouraged me to keep practicing and I know I've made a lot of progress.

First approach would be checking and working on technique," back to basics".
Technique presents an important element in process of learning and adjusting body itself to the instrument, in natural way.
The main thing through my work ethic with students is to make student capable to become adjustable drummer/musician and percussionist in various styles of music.
In my opinion, instructor's role is to help the student find his/her own way of getting through music and creativity. Also to show the beauty of playing this instrument.
I have been performing various styles on drumset,(some of them: Jazz, Funk, Rock, Latin, MiddleEastern) with different combos and ensembles and at the same time I have been performing as professional percussionist in orchestra setting and in Big Band setting.

About Igor
Hello,
My name is Igor Stojanovic, and I am a recent graduate of Northern Illinois University’s School of Music, where I graduated with a Master of Music (Jazz Studies, Drumset) in May 2017.
Also, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Benedict College in South Carolina. This education is anchored in a number of solid teaching and performance experiences.
I won two national prizes, 1. prize( 2007) and 2. (2009) at the National Percussion Competition of Serbia.
I performed in various group settings, jazz, funk, rock, Classical Orchestra and Big Band setting.
I played with Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Serbia, played for 3 years in South Carolina with outstanding jazz and funk musicians, I performed at Chicago Jazz festival with Big Band etc..
As one of my idols, Steve Gadd says:'' Adjustments never
stop" I have been trying to stay adjustable for various styles and along performing and teaching I am still learning myself.
I believe that the best learning occurs when a student reaches on that level that he/she start finding new things in music that are also new for us/educators as well. At this moment in music creativity, both, students and educators, start teaching one each other while they are enjoying the beauty of music.
The uncertainty becomes the essential focus in music sense, since neither professor nor student know what type of certain element will show up during next class of performing some tune, or some piece of music or during practicing simple exercise.
