Mike has done a great job teaching me. In a year and a half, I have gone from never playing a stringed instrument, to being able to jam with friends and family. I learned basic three-finger Scruggs style bluegrass banjo, and I making moves now to become an intermediate player. I really recommend Mike. He is kind and warm-hearted, and works with you to meet you where you are and improve your game. I now know about 10 songs that I can play lead on, and I can roll or vamp as back-up on any other bluegrass song. Mike has set me up now to work with intermediate techniques. Mike will help you learn!

I have been taking banjo lessons with Mike for two months. The instruction has been really useful for me. I debated for a long time about whether or not to take formal lessons. I am so glad that I did. Mike is a very good musician and instructor. I am progressing and enjoying the experience. I highly recommend him as an instructor.

First lesson was great. I was nervous, but Mike put me at ease and made me feel right at home. The lesson flew by, and I can't wait until we meet again.

I play and teach both clawhammer and fingerpicking banjo styles. As a performer, I mostly play traditional and contemporary classical music, though I also have performed and recorded quite a bit of folk music on banjo. I enjoy working with clawhammer students as they create their own arrangements of tunes.

About Mark

I am a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter working in a variety of genres. I regularly perform around the Washington, DC, area as a solo guitarist, as a singer/songwriter, and with numerous classical, folk, rock, and musical theater groups. My primary musical influences include folk and

Mark has been a great teacher for this adult beginner! I take lessons in clawhammer banjo and ukulele with him, and his easy-going nature and skill in identifying ways to improve make it a joyful experience! Highly recommend.

Mr. Sylvester is one of the greatest. He is not just an amazing guitarist, but he is also very kind. He treats people with so much respect. He speaks to me and my mom so nicely. He is very patient. He has a deep knowledge of music and knows how to get the most out of even the least talented people (like me!). He doesn't ever get mad if you make a mistake or forget to bring your music notes. We were so lucky to find Mr. Sylvester.

Mark is a talented musician who plays and teaches multiple stringed instruments. His lessons are always informative and supportive. They are driven by the student’s interest, so anything you want o learn— styles of music, how to do a particular technique, music theory— you can bring to class. And every now and then he organizes a recital— terrifying but great practice!

I highly reccommend Kenton! My 10 year old son has been taking lessons online for the past couple of months. My son is an absolute beginner, however, is progressing quickly through the curriculum. Kenton is a fantastic teacher, knowledgable, patient, and kind. He keeps the lessons fun, age appriopriate and challenging. Choosing Kenton as our Mountain Dulcimer instructor has been the best decision for us. Give Kenton a try; you won't regret it!

I first heard Nick play about 4 years ago and a friend of mine took lessons from him. When I decided to start lessons, I naturally decided to go to him. As I went to his place, I thought, "Oh wow! I forget to ask my friend whether he's a good teacher!" I need not have worried. He's superb. He focuses on musicality: listening, hearing, enjoying; and then pulls out the technical things you could improve at and delves deep. I leave every lesson feeling great, and (proof of the pudding) people I jam with comment on how much my playing has improved. I'm an "advanced intermediate" player, but Nick also teaches kids, beginners, etc. In the age of coronavirus, our lessons are on Skype, and they are great, too. He comes out of jazz and plays trad as well as modern, but he also has an Americana band, and he knows classical, and the student before me is learning Hendrix-style rock. So no matter what direction you want to go, Nick is your man!
Cris
I’ve been trying to teach myself guitar from online videos and just started taking lessons with Nick. It’s making a huge difference. He’s worked on my posture, left and right hand positions, started me on basic ear training, sight reading and understanding of rhythm. He’s given me exercises to help with chord changes I’ve been struggling with. Nick’s a great musician who loves to play but also loves to teach, so a beginner with no music training can gain from his knowledge. He’s a kind, patient teacher and an enjoyable person to spend time with. My guitar playing sounds better already.
Bob Tilton
This was my first lesson with Nick. He is a very nice guy. He created a calm, relaxed atmosphere in his studio, and he was clear when he gave me particular instructions. His knowledge of music theory in general, and of the five-string banjo in particular, was quite impressive. I would recommend him highly to both a beginner and to anyone (like myself) who is in need of a refresher course. I am very much looking forward to my next lesson.

"I am a 60+ guy that had gotten a banjo for Christmas. I had one many, many years ago and I wanted to start again with lessons. With Take a Lesson I met up with Ryan. Here is a Kool layed back kinda guy that is a musician and a real good instructor. He has taken me from zero to cords and rolls. He listens well and is flexible enough that you learn at your own speed. Get in line for this Guy. Thanks Ryan!"

Are Heavy Metal Banjos The Next Big Thing?

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
