Beginner
I'm not currently taking beginner drum students. Please refer to my studio partner Melissa:
https://takelessons.com/profile/melissa-m62

Intermediate
Start to learn about polyrhythms as well as developing your ears and body to play songs more accurately. Start to spice up your playing with ways that are interesting, but not intrusive.

Advanced
Really push your polyrhythms and add asymmetrical meters to your repertoire to expand your grasp of complex rhythms. Also learn to use dynamics, cymbal work, and fills to effectively communicate and lead a band without words.

About Jesse
*Disclaimer*
I'm currently not taking beginner students on voice/singing, guitar, bass, drums, piano, and ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Melissa though. Please check out her profile:

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. It's really important to know though that everyone makes their own experience. The process of learning music involves you learning as much about your own mind and body as it does any external concepts, so please keep in mind only you can move yourself forward.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Music Stands

*A P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ

About Rob
Rob (aka R.J.): Born in Detroit, Michigan, RJ studied r&b and jazz from Motown drummers and Funk Brothers Benny Benjamin and Uriel Jones. From the age of fifteen he played in rhythm & blues and jazz combos around Detroit. He then studied privately with Berklee School of Music drum maestro, Gene Stuart, mallet studies with Mark Johnson at Michigan State University and earned a Bachelors Degree from Michigan State. He moved to San Francisco where he studied North Indian percussion and tabla with Zakir Hussain, trap set with jazz recording artist George Marsh. He is a consummate producer, performer, recording artist and teacher. He plays and teaches all styles of rhythm including jazz, funk, blues, rock, latin, and world fusion. He teaches drumset, congas, djembe, tabla, cajon and hand percussion. In addition to teaching privately, RJ h
as directed special week-long drum and percussion focused ensemble productions at Drake High School and Marin Academy and was Music Director at Cascade Canyon (K-8) School for two years where he directed variety shows and produced scores for the drama department. In his teaching practice all ages are welcome and all levels including: beginners, intermediate students, advanced players, and professionals.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to drum lessons is simple. I want my students to be excited about every stage of the process. I want to be as productive as possible with each student and want the lessons to be fun and focused.
I want beginning students to learn the essentials of good posture, correct hand positions or grips (how to hold the sticks in matched and military grip), how to best use their hands and feet to get around the drumset and to then develop a solid foundation of applicable rudiments, rhythms and patterns. In fact,
I have master drumset rudiments that help facilitate fluid movement around the drums in all directions. My studio is equipped with a top level TAMA drumset with Zildjian cymbals, congas, timbales, hand percussion, piano, vibes, excellent recording and listening equipment and speakers.
I provide the necessary foundations of rudiments, rhythms, patterns and grooves. Then I show how to combine these essentials to the drumset. I combine these developments with essential reading studies so the student learns to read drum music and charts from the very beginning.
I find out what kind of music the student listens to and likes and then I will use some of the more familiar tracks by those artists to help the student apply each pattern stylistically into actual arrangements…like a guitar teacher would teach some scales and chords, then apply them to actual songs. That way the student will remember the different patterns and remained engaged in the process. It’s a “see, say and do” approach.
I have a saying that I use: “FREEDOM follows FUNCTION and function follows FORM.” First you learn the forms (rudiments, rhythms and patterns). Then, with practice, you become functional with the forms, rhythm patterns and combinations. Then you are free to use everything you learn as it relates to the music. Your are “free” to create and improvise both alone and with others.

Within six month my students will have a firm grasp of essential rudiments, rhythms, patterns, sticking, single and double bass drumset techniques and be reading charts for the drumset.
Later on, as part of the student’s development, I will introduce them to different styles of music including jazz, African, Afro-Cuban, Latin and Brazilian rhythms and patterns so that the student becomes a well-rounded player.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My Private Studio is on the first floor of my house: there is a six-piece professional series TAMA drumset and an assortment of K. and A. Zildjian cymbals, a piano, set of vibes, timbales, congas, bongos, djembe and a variety of hand percussion. There are additional chairs to sit on, Parents are welcome to sit in on lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Five and six piece drum sets, hard cases, three congas with cases, bongos in a hard case, timbales in a hard case, trap case for stands, cymbal case and stick bag.

*** Specialties ***
Trapset all styles, African djembe and shekere, Latin congas and timbales, Indian tablas.

I never expected to find a teacher as stellar as Rob Franco. It's one thing to be an accomplished drummer, but quite another to have the capacity to teach what you know. Rob's got both! He ably teaches theory, technique, and application. He has a wonderful warm personality that feeds a student's confidence without insincerity. It's obvious that Rob has been successfully teaching students how to drum for a good long time because he does it with such ease and good humor. Wanna learn how to drum? Read drum music? Understand how it all works? And have a really relaxed and fun time while you're learning? Rob Franco is your man.

I Got Lucky

A year and a half ago I decided to try to learn how to play an instrument, and chose drums. Learning how to also read and write music for drumming was high on my list. I also needed this to be a fun adventure with no real public performance goals for the first couple of years. It needed to be a stress reducer from the demands of the day job. Finding and working with RJ has been a total kick in the pants. I couldn't ask for a better coach. He hasn't let me get stuck in any one form, I'm learning all of them. It's hard! But I couldn't imagine not drumming now. It's very exciting, and I look forward to learning more over the coming years.

Students can expect a relaxed atmosphere, but also making sure that there is a high level of professionalism and expectation of attentiveness from the student.

Of course, I also understand that this all depends on the age of the student, and as we meet and get to see what it is that you want to focus on and I will make sure to concentrate on that and help you reach your goals!

About Erasmo
Hello Parents and Students,

I have been teaching and writing music professionally for ten years. My first introduction to music was just like some of you, starting in high school where I had a great teacher that encouraged me to play. This helped me so much, and I wouldn't be where I am at if it weren't for his help and positive encouragement. Now I try to encourage all of my students the same way.

After high school I went on and played percussion with various Orchestras such as the "œInland Valley Symphony Orchestra" and "Mt. San Jacinto Symphony Orchestra."

I have also been involved in the DCI (Drum Corps International) and Drumline community. I toured for four years and experienced performing with groups such as Yamato Drum and Bugle Corps 2002-2005, Black Knights 2006, and RCC marching and winter percussion under the direct
ion of Scott Johnson & Jeff Lee in 2002, and Sean Vega & Jim Wunderlich in 2003.

During my college years I started playing Jazz Vibraphone in my school'™s top big-band. This allowed me the opportunity to play Jazz Piano which I have performed and still study until this day. As a result, Jazz has now become one of my biggest passions.

As a Professional International Composer, I have had the privilege of writing and arranging for many marching bands, wind ensembles, and indoor percussion ensembles, including orchestrations, recordings and sequencing projects for media, and musical theatre in the United States and Japan.

I am also currently an adjudicator for the Southern California Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) and a member of the Vic-Firth Education Team.

I hope that this gives you a close and personal Idea of where I come from and hope that I can help you get the most out of your experience with music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that in order for you to get the most out of our lessons it takes both, the Teacher'™s and Student'™s understanding and attention from both ends. sometimes giving all of the information in the world won't help if one there is no engagement and two if me as a teacher don't make sure that you understand. So I like to make sure to explain things in more than one way to make sure the student understands the concepts and what to practice.

I like to keep a relaxed atmosphere, but also making sure that there is a high level of professionalism and expectation of attentiveness from the student.

Of course, I also understand that this all depends on the age of the student, and as we meet and get to see what it is that you want to focus on and I will make sure to concentrate on that and help you reach your goals!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Mallets, Concert and Marching Sticks, Metronome, Practice pad, and Literature.
(Acoustic and Electric Piano are available depending on the time we arrange our lessons at the studio)
(Electric Drumset Available soon)

*** Travel Equipment ***
Mallets, Concert and Marching Sticks, Metronome, Practice pad, and Literature.
(I sometimes bring additional implements, such as hand drums, like a djembe and other accessories, depending on the focus of our lessons.)
I may be able to bring a Keyboard upon request

*** Specialties ***
I have been performing with Drum and bugle corps since 2002, (DCI)

Marching Rudimental, and Concert Percussion styles. All Percussion.
Orchestral, Marimba, Vibraphone, and Marching Percussion.

I specialize in the Jazz genre, and have performed Jazz piano.. which includes sight-reading and chord recognition in the Jazz idiom.

I started when I was 10. My first performance was on a single snare drum and a cymbal at the 5th grade talent show, we performed Get Back by The Beatles. From there I became influenced by other drummers and wanted to be the best that I can. I started teaching drum lessons quite a while ago (maybe 10 years?) and have loved it ever since.

About Anthony
I am a graduate of Humboldt State University. I majored in Percussion which is what I love to do. I excelled quickly and performed a senior recital earlier than most students. On it I performed various pieces for differing instruments. My favorite, and most interesting, was a Bach Fugue in G minor for Violin, but I adapted and played it for the Marimba. I also played pieces on Solo Snare Drum, a multiple percussive set up, Timpani, and Guitar. I enjoy teaching and would love to share the knowledge I have gained by my teacher. While up there I enjoyed other activities including West African Ensemble, Calypso Band, and the World Percussion Group, specifically enjoying the Brazillian Samba portion.

Beginning drum students will be taught the basics in a fun but productive way. I will teach a strong foundation so a student can move forward with confidence. Lessons would be individualized to focus on areas that need the most guidance.

Students will learn to feel rhythms from whole notes up to sixteenth notes and become fluent in simple, compound, and swing rhythm families. You will gain the skills for simple time keeping as well as playing simple songs.

About Melissa
I have been teaching since 2006 on a variety of topics. I graduated with an BA from the University of Wisconsin. My degree is in History with and emphasis on East Asian history.

I've taught all age groups from age 2 up to retirees. My teaching experience includes one-on-one and group classes in a variety of settings. I've taught corporate classes, private lessons, small groups, and traditional classroom lessons.

We have a student-centric philosophy of learning. Lessons are generally relaxed and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. Special focus on topics like music theory, self-accompaniment, composition, song writing, and home recording are available as well.

What are your personal goals? We'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but we prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible.

I love sharing my enthusiasm for music with my students! For the last ten years, I've guided hundreds of students to improve their drumming and percussion performance, their composing, and their musicality. As a drummer and a composer myself, I am able to combine concepts from both disciplines into my lessons, which are specially designed for every students' unique needs. It doesn't matter what your experience level is— beginner, intermediate, or advanced— I can help you improve your skills. All ages accepted. Let's get started!

About Jeremy
I'm a drummer, composer, and music theory instructor from Long Island, NY. I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees in music composition from SUNY Purchase College, and am currently working on my PhD in music composition at UC Berkeley.

As a drummer, I love playing and teaching all styles of music, with a particular affinity for rock, funk, jazz, alternative, electronic music, improvisation, and marching percussion. In 2013, I toured the country with NY-based folk band Elijah & the Moon, performing gigs in 10 US states including the Mountain Jam music festival. I always emphasize the importance of rudiments, fundamentals, and good technique in all my lessons— no doubt these are values instilled in me from my long background in marching and classical percussion studies. I've performed in jazz ensembles, rock bands, metal bands, cove
r bands, improvisation collectives, orchestras, and contemporary classical music ensembles.

As a composer, my pieces have so far been performed in New York, California, Tennessee, Virginia, Ukraine, Italy, and in 2019, Spain. I'm highly trained in orchestration, score and parts preparation, music theory, and solfege. Not only can I help students learn the drum parts to their favorite songs, but I can also help develop the skills needed to analyze the melodies, chord progressions, and structures. I'm currently teaching music theory for undergraduate students in the UC Berkeley Department of Music.

I use Sibelius notation software, Ableton, iZotope, Tama drums, Meinl cymbals, and Vic Firth sticks.

Along with hand drums such as doumbek, I can teach you to transfer rhythms & techniques to other percussion instruments. At first I thought I couldn't learn middle Eastern instruments or gongs, but discovered I could. Learn to hold a steady beat to support the music, or someone soloing and eventually learn to solo yourself. My lessons build on the lessons before to develop a wide vocabulary. We'll explore and play other percussion instruments, too, if desired. Drum and be merry, come one, come all!

About Evelie
I am a singer-songwriter, arranger, guitarist, band/chorus/ensemble director, music teacher and consultant with over 50 years experience in the music business. With my university chorus, I sang at the Kennedy Ctr Washington DC & the Lincoln Ctr, NY. I have 3 sold out albums and new material for a triple album that I'm currently in the process of producing. My ensembles play for conventions, conferences, fairs, festivals, school assemblies, and special events. I also bring my music to assisted living, elder & memory care facilities, nursing homes & rehab centers, even prisons.

My style of teaching is holistic, multi-disciplinary, patient, inclusive & fun. I teach singing, guitar, hand drums (and small percussion instruments), ukulele. The practicum comes with theory.

Singing in 34 languages covers a variety of genres. Name it, we'll exp
lore it.

All ages are welcome. Even old dogs can learn new tricks. :-) Shall we debunk this saying?
