Hello! My name is Rachelle and I'm a professional singer, songwriter and pianist from Victoria, BC, Canada. My background in music is a blend of Pop, Rock, Jazz Classical, Blues and R&B. I was recently featured in Keyboard Magazine’s November 2012 Issue as one of the 6 Best Keyboard Heroes to watch out for.
Some of my performance highlights have been opening up for Nelly Furtado in 2001 in our hometown Victoria BC, and again on her "Loose" tour in 2007 at Roger's Arena in Vancouver, BC for an audience of 15,000. I've taught for six years helping foster my student’s talents and reach their musical goals. Past students have attained lead roles in high school musicals, toured in professional
bands locally and internationally.
When it comes to teaching music a “cookie cutter" approach is never used. I understand everyone has a unique l
earning style and I try my best to cater my lessons around each student's individual needs and goals. I was fortunate enough to grow up in an incredibly musical household. My dad toured with Bryan Adams as his guitarist and my mom’s worked with heavy weights such as David Foster as a professional vocalist. I was mentored by some of the best in the music business since childhood. I started learning piano at the age of four and started recording vocals for radio commercials at the age of six. The experience I've acquired over the years from recording in world class studios and touring internationally I believe has given me invaluable insight to impart with my students. I’m very passionate about teaching. *** Lesson Details ***
I understand that starting lessons can feel a bit scary and outside of ones comfort zone. It takes courage to try something new! I take pride in creating a fun, stress free learning environment, as I know it's incredibly important. I like to encourage having the best of both worlds when it comes to learning voice and piano. That means introducing some sight-reading as well as how to play freestyle, or without sheet music. What to expect upon your first lesson would be an easygoing assessment as well as something to take home and practice. I want to find out what your music tastes and background are and your personal goals, what you would like to get out of lessons. I tailor lessons around each student and their personal learning style.
Piano students: The following is an example of what students can expect to learn, proper technique, sight reading, chords and popular song progressions, how to develop a piece of music, rhythmic training, ear training, how to play their favorite song(s). I use a combo of music books, Alfred Series, Bastien and Dozen a Day for technique and finger exercises as well write out music for students too on the song they would like to learn. I make a list of songs you would like to learn and also suggest some too that I think you would like and can also further develop your piano playing skills.

Voice Lessons: I’m a firm believer that we can learn a lot from hearing ourselves back on recordings. We are our own toughest critic. Recording ourselves singing helps us hear where our strengths and weaknesses are. It might seem a little uncomfortable at first listening back, I know! However, it offers fresh perspective for us to able to take our voices to the next level. I record using an app on my iPhone or iPad and encourage my students to record as well. If they do not have a recording device I email the recording to them to study along with the notes and exercises they are given to work on. This enables the students to witness their personal progress from lesson to lesson! It’s a great learning tool!
The following is an example of what voice students can expect to learn: proper breathing techniques, how improve tone and extend their range, how to develop agility, pop riffs, and dynamic control, how to prepare for auditions, live shows and studio recording and much more!

What I expect from my students: To come to lessons with an open mind, a readiness to learn, to try new things and to apply what they learn each lesson to continue making weekly steady progress ☺ We only get out of something what we put into it right?

I like to be as flexible as possible, I understand that often times students have many other things going on in their lives whether it be sports, school or work etc. We go at a pace you feel comfortable with but enough where you feel you are getting a bit of a challenge each week to be growing. Let’s make some beautiful music together!

Rachelle is extremely personable, knowledgeble, and communicative in her technique training. She is really helping me to unlearn all the bad habits that have naturally developed over the years, and I'm already more cognitive of my vocal projection. She's at the top of her game. Would highly recommend her to ANYONE in search of the best instructor.

A fantastic teacher

In just my first few lessons with Rachelle, I learned more about the anatomical aspect of singing than I had in 10 years of choir/singing. She put great emphasis on the technique and skill aspects, while still balancing it with emotional connection. Perhaps my favorite thing about Rachelle is that instead of giving you songs to practice or telling you exactly what kind of songs you need to be doing, she allows you to bring in any music that you like and allows you to pick the focus of your lessons (whether you want to work more on breath support or volume or tone quality etc.). She maintains a flexible, laid-back and supportive attitude and has been a wonderful help for me.

Rachelle is a great teacher!

I took lessons with Rachelle for about 2 years and I'm so glad I did. I have improved so much vocally as well as performance-wise. It was a lot of fun to be able to work on my own favorite songs instead of purely classical. I would definitely recommend taking lessons with Rachelle!

I am currently the piano and guitar teacher at Oakwood Academy Schools of Long Beach. I have a BA in Music Education with an emphasis in voice. I've been teaching for 16 years in classroom and one-on-one settings. Other places where I have taught are: Calvary Chapel Downey School, Dexter Music Academy, the Youth Cultural Arts Foundation of Bellflower, and ABC Unified School District. I've been complimented on my ability to teach in a way that makes my students learn very quickly. I was trained in the classical and pop/rock genres. I've toured with choirs throughout China, and the United States (including Carnegie Hall), and I have also toured with rock bands in Spain, Mexico, Central America, Peru, and throughout the U.S.A.

I've worked with various vocal coaches including Maxayn Lewis (Who has worked with Celine Dion and Britney
Spears), and I am currently the lead singer (also playing guitar & piano) in the alternative rock band "Stripe Coats". In August of 2009, this band released a 5-song EP and after a month we landed a record deal with label Tate Music Group. In August 3rd of 2010, Stripe Coats released their 11-song album under the band name Kaden. This album features artists such as guitarist Michael Thompson (played for Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera), and drummer John Robinson (played for Quincy Jones, Elton John). The album also contains three songs that were recorded and produced by Producer Wyn Davis (producer of No Doubt, Sublime). Wyn Davis said, "Stripe Coats is one of the most promising new bands to come through Total Access [Studios] in a long time.  After doing records and watching young bands enter and exit the studio for over 30 years, it is STILL very exciting to work with a band that brings so much love, passion, and skill to what they do."

Stripe Coats™' songs are on rotation on Live 365 Internet Radio, and TMG Internet Radio. Our songs have also been featured on Alcoa Tennessee'™s Love 89.1 Radio and on hundreds of other radio stations, such as Refuge, CSN, and WCTL.

I divide my class into 4 parts: 1. Scales/Chords/Arpeggios/Warm-ups 2. Sight-Reading 3. Theory 4. Improvisation. Depending on the instrument of your choice, and also what your specific goals are, each of these parts are customized. You will learn quickly.

To me every student is unique and special, therefore I design the lesson around what they need and or want to learn. With the younger students, I strongly suggest we work out of a book as well as me giving them handouts to work on too. There are many and various books by Faber and Faber I love to use. Hal Leonard and Alfred Publishing have some great books depending on the students needs. With kids, it's important to keep it fun and interesting, and get them on a practice schedule. I believe one must have much patience with the younger students and the level of communication must be high, keeping them engaged and focused. With teens and adults, it depends on where they are at, and I always ask what they want to concentrate on. A well rounded piano lesson would work on reading, technique, theory, songs. Again, depending on the type of student, the lesson would incorporate more /and or less of these components.
I've been coined the "Chord Queen" by many students because of my fascination with how theory plays a subconscious role in songwriters who write by ear and if I'm teaching songwriting, we are looking at how the song is structured, the lyrics,the music, and of course the harmony and arrangement and I'm here to guide the student to be able to finish the song, and them be happy when it comes to fruition.

Robin really took the time to understand our daughter's strengths and weaknesses to determine how best to approach improving her piano playing. She didn't just teach out of a book, rather she worked on the fundamentals that are needed in order to build a firm foundation. Elise likes her as a teacher and was very attentive through the whole lesson.

Great Teacher

I played a little guitar throughout my life but was lacking an understanding of how the instrument works. I found myself strumming a few cords here and there but never with focus or improvement. After only three lessons with Paul, I'm now jamming to rock and the blues!Paul was quickly able to access my level of playing and I'm now understanding how the fretboard works and most importantly having lots of fun during lessons and practice. He teaches with passion and doesn't simply open a book but rather instills his lifelong experience and philosophy into lessons. Many can teach the mechanics of guitar but with Paul, you'll also understand the soul.

Paul Rocks !!

I just had my 2nd lesson with Paul and felt inspired to write a review. I have wanted to learn guitar for many, many years now. In the past, I have always gotten frustrated -or bored- and gave up before I ever even learned a chord. Our 1st lesson, Paul started me with some very basic mechanics. It was just the right amount of information to keep me interested and challenged but not so much that I was overwhelmed the 1st week. From just 15 -30 minutes a day of practicing, I have already gained some flexibility in my fingers and am beginning to have a "feel" for the instrument. I have seen more improvement and learned more from Paul and the exercises he has given me in just 2 lessons than I have collectively ever learned from any other teacher in the past or any book or online tutorial. His knowledge of the instrument, as well as music theory, is vast and he knows how to break it down into digestible bits for maximum benefit to the student. So I am not only learning to play guitar, I am also being introduced to music theory in a very easy to understand manner. He is very patient and creates a safe and supportive environment in which to learn comfortably. I am SO glad I found him!!! His way of teaching really works or me ~ I feel hopeful, inspired and motivated for the first time ever in attempting to learn this instrument. Thank you Paul and Thank You Take Lessons !!

Crystal brings a lifetime’s experience of professional musicianship to each of her lessons. Born into a family of musicians, she sang her first solo at age 2. Amazing singng instructor

Crystal has increased my daughter’s self-esteem and expressiveness through song. My daughter is now writing her own poetry and song lyrics, as well as being able to combat her once shyness quality. I started taking private guitar lessons as a teenager for several years and played in my high school jazz band along with original rock bands. While in high school, I was able to study with popular Chicago rock virtuoso guitarist Kevin M. Buck, where I first learned music theory and was inspired to be more studious with the guitar.

ds for 12 years as an electric guitarist and also for 4 years as a solo acoustic guitarist mixing Bossa Nova, Classical Guitar and original compositions into my performance repertoire.

I'm a patient teacher that's passionate about guitar and helping students reach their musical goals whether they are casual players or serious musicians. For beginners, I use Hal Leonard instructional guitar books along with paper handouts and sheet music. I believe it's important for everyone to learn the fundamentals of music to create a strong base of skills in order to continue playing and learning music throughout one's life. For more experienced players, I like to teach various modern rock/pop songs, classical guitar songs, picking patterns, finger picking patters, improvisation, scales and music theory. I teach nylon string acoustic, steel string acoustic guitar and electric guitar and bass
I believe the most basic goal for a guitar student is to be able to play a song in it's entirety, whether it's by themselves or with other musicians/music students. I believe that some of the most important music skills are learned while actually playing with other musicians. It is crucial when learning an instrument to be able to play in 'real time'; playing music with a steady sense of rhythm.

For about five years now, I have been actually completing playable music. The past couple years, my school's jazz combo has even taken a couple of my songs to compete with at local jazz festivals. I have studied primarily under the fantastic composer, guitarist and teacher, Tom Hynes the past couple years. Prior to my studies, I was self taught, as a way of expanding my improvisation. I write primarily for Chamber ensembles, Jazz small ensembles, and even some pop music. I use Handwritten, Finale and Logic pro for notation, so whichever is most convenient, I'll use. In lessons, I will ask students to bring in material they have written each week, which we will review together. I'll add some suggestions, but will not change the integrity of the music, just refine it. We shall look at composing in different styles, as well as expanding upon the styles in which the student is most interesting in pursuing.

I've been playing the saxophone for over ten years now, writing music for as long as I can remember, and singing since I was in elementary school. I play for a variety of groups in Los Angeles, and sometimes perform in L.A. and surrounding areas at venues such as the LightHouse, Saint Rocke, Avalon, and the Baked Potato.

I keep my lessons fun, efficient, and applicable. I give students assignments to work on, not only so they don't forget what we talk about, but also so they can also expand upon the concepts given in lessons, (which familiarizes them more with the information).
