Rocky began playing drums and taking private lessons at 12 years old. He started learning classic rock tunes from Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin. Drums were very easy for Rocky to learn, he was learning techniques and songs very quickly. He wanted to strengthen his musical education which he did at Santa Fe High School.

He took all the music courses, concert band, marching band (section leader), jazz band, and winter drum line. Rocky has jammed with great players such as Poncho Sanchez,Bo Diddley, Christy Hemme (WWE), Murv Douglas (Powerman 5000), etc. He has various musical styles from Jazz to Latin, and R&B to Rock. You can see him playing all over LA and Orange County music venues

I first started playing drums on pots and pans when I was a wee lad. My parents thankfully fostered my musical inhibitions and purchased an electronic pad at the of 9. I have been playing ever since, mainly self-taught, with a variety of bands performing professionally across the Texas music scene. In addition to drum kit, I am a classically trained trombone player who studied under professor Charles Hurt at Texas State. I aim to bring my performance experience and classical music education to my students, in a way that’s easy to digest and most of all, fun!

I can teach a variety of styles including rock, pop, funk, jazz, blues and metal. The progression is focused on fundamentals, technique and theory to ensure that you can apply these concepts to whatever style of music you'd like to play throughout your music journey. I also do volunteer work teaching piano and drum kit lessons with Kids in a New Groove here in Austin.

If you'd like to hear more of the music I have been ...

Great Drum Teacher

My daughter had been taking private drum lesson for years before she started with Derrick. At the first lesson, Derrick told her how important it was to feel the music, other than just working on technique. That was exactly what she needed to work on. Derrick has a broad experience with playing different type of music. He likes to show her how to play, which helps her understand right away. He is very nice and patient. He is flexible and reliable in terms of lesson schedules. He uses lots of references, songs and exercises in his teaching. Now, my daughter enjoys her lessons and practices a lot more.

Dave is able to work with me, a beginner, and provide me with enough challenge so that I keep learning and also keep interested in drums. He has a great sense of humor along with patience which is important with a teacher whom is teaching a beginner. At times he will also take out a guitar and play along which adds to the fun."

Drumming from Riverside

By Joan Q. - Riverside Drums Teacher

When a musician thinks about California, they think about Los Angeles, one of the top music scenes in the country. But when Riverside is mentioned, not that many musicians are familiar with the area. My name is Joan, and I teach percussion and drum lessons in Riverside. I’m here to discuss what it is like being a drummer and teacher from the Riverside music scene.

I have been performing and teaching for several years now and have been fortunate to find opportunities outside of Riverside. I studied music at California State University in Long Beach, which is not too far from Los Angeles. I have performed in Los Angeles, New York City, Las Vegas, and even France. The music scenes in each of these places are very different from one another in terms of competition and opportunities. Los Angeles is definitely competitive. The great thing about Riverside is that no matter what age you are and what level you are as a musician, there are tons of opportunities to perform. There are many cafes, restaurants, bars, and other venues that will hire live bands of any genre.

I currently play percussion at a local church, play drum set in a rock band based in Riverside, and play drum set for an all-female Latin band based in Los Angeles. Networking in different areas is very important to become successful as a musician because you never know who will notice you and give you a gig. In my experience though, there is definitely less pressure in Riverside than in Los Angeles. There are many drummers from Riverside, but because the area is so big the competition is not that steep and there is always somewhere to perform.

As a teacher from Riverside, I find that it is a great area for people who are starting out on drums. Because there is less pressure to be competitive, I find that my students taking drum lessons in Riverside want to learn just because they want to have fun and they love music. We are able to focus more on who they are as a drummer, rather than trying to be better than everyone else. When they feel ready to join the experienced and professional musicians, Los Angeles is not too far away.

I really enjoy being a drummer and teaching drum lessons in Riverside. It has given me a variety of people to work with, places to perform, and the more challenging city of Los Angeles is only a drive away. If you’re interested in Riverside drum lessons, just give us a call. And remember, music is all about having fun!

Our 8 Best Tips for Effective Drum Practice

What’s more important: the amount of drum practice you do, or the quality of the  practice? Although you might be tempted to lock yourself in your room for a week to goof around on the drums, studies have shown that the amount of practice isn’t always an indicator of outstanding drumming performance. Rather, drummers who employ long practice sessions of average quality will never perform at high level. And high-quality practice over short periods of time won’t help drummers achieve the re …
