I started when I was 10. My first performance was on a single snare drum and a cymbal at the 5th grade talent show, we performed Get Back by The Beatles. From there I became influenced by other drummers and wanted to be the best that I can. I started teaching drum lessons quite a while ago (maybe 10 years?) and have loved it ever since.

Mr Piper is the best instructor ever!! Not only is he good at what he does, his passion for what he does sets him apart! I'm so glad that he teaches my 6 year old son on a level that he can relate to, AND that challenges him simultaneously. Looking forward to having him work with my daughter who is also a percussionist!

I first started playing drums on pots and pans when I was a wee lad. My parents thankfully fostered my musical inhibitions and purchased an electronic pad at the of 9. I have been playing ever since, mainly self-taught, with a variety of bands performing professionally across the Texas music scene. In addition to drum kit, I am a classically trained trombone player who studied under professor Charles Hurt at Texas State. I aim to bring my performance experience and classical music education to my students, in a way that’s easy to digest and most of all, fun!

I can teach a variety of styles including rock, pop, funk, jazz, blues and metal. The progression is focused on fundamentals, technique and theory to ensure that you can apply these concepts to whatever style of music you'd like to play throughout your music journey. I also do volunteer work teaching piano and drum kit lessons with Kids in a New Groove here in Austin.

If you'd like to hear more of the music I have been ...

"Our daughter has been taking lessons with Craig for a little over a year. We’ve heard a great deal of progress from her since she started. My daughter's feedback: Craig takes the time to correct small details and write out the counts. He won’t rush through lessons and keeps things fun. He adapts to the students interests. e.g. took the time to create specific lessons for cowbell and drum brushes. Overall we couldn’t be happier with Craig and we highly recommend him."

"Michael has been very patient and flexible with my inconsistent schedule as a working adult. He brings a positive energy with a lot of praise and positive reinforcement that makes me look forward to my weekly lesson. If learning how to play drums is on your new years resolution/bucket list, Michael makes that commitment a fun experience! I've tried a few drum teachers but I especially noticed a huge improvement in my drum skills since I started lessons with Michael. I've played songs that I wouldn't have imagined playing a year ago. He is of course very knowledgable with the drums, published his own drum lesson book, but he doesn't just go through rudiments or textbook material. He gives various resources that are useful in drumming and never makes the learning experience dull. Very professional and easy-to-approach guy, I would recommend him to anyone wanting to learn drums, especially if you're an adult wanting to try something new!"

How to Read Drum Sheet Music | How to Play Drums

Think drummers don't need to read music? Think again! Drum sheet music is a great way to learn your favorite beats and write things out so you will remember them later. Drum sheet music is written on the same five line staff as traditional music. At the beginning of the piece, you'll see the time signature. Written like a fraction (4/4 or 7/8, for example), the time signature lets you know how many beats to play in each measure and what the rhythm should be. You should also see the number of …
