Glynis has been reading music since before she knew how to read words. Her mother started teaching her piano lessons at age 3, and she started taking voice lessons at age 7. She learned from an early age to practice every day. She has taught all levels and ages of piano and voice for many years. Glynis specializes in jazz voice, but has a very strong classical and musical theatre background. She is an arranger, composer, educator, and singer. She received her AA in Professional Music from SWCC (school for music vocations), her BA in Jazz Studies: Vocal Performance at CSU Sacramento, and her Masters in Jazz Studies: Vocal Performance at the Bob Cole Conservatory at CSU Long Beach. She teaches college and high school vocal jazz ensembles as well as many private students in many areas of music.

My teaching philosoph
y is to have a safe, positive, fun, and effective learning environment for all of my students. I believe it is important to be a well rounded musician, therefore I love my students to have a solid understanding of what they are doing. I strongly encourage all of my students to learn theory along with piano or voice, so they understand what they are doing. Each student is unique, therefore each student has a different lesson plan. I do expect that my students will practice during the week in order to grow, since this helps them reach their goals. I do let students pick most their own repertoire, since it is very important for them to be motivated and enjoy their assignments during the week. I can teach from early Baroque music to modern day and everything in between. Music is expression, therefore I believe it is very important for my students to love what they are working on.

I can bring a keyboard, but it is necessary to have a piano or keyboard at home to pracitce on if you are a piano student.

Glynis is the best teacher! As an adult student, I have unhappy memories of childhood instructors with punishing demeanors, who would give you a hard time with every mistake. Glynis is the most supportive, encouraging teacher I've ever had. I especially appreciate her rigorous background (Master's Degrees in music, a lifetime of piano and music theory) and her familiarity with the pieces I'm interested in learning (Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, Bach, Chopin). She has introduced pieces to me that I hadn't heard before, that I now love to play. It's so nice to be able to sit at the piano and play something that actually sounds like an adult playing!

Glynis is very adept at tailoring her teaching methods to what I need on that particular day. Sometimes I haven't had a chance to practice as much as I'd like, and she is very patient, helping me based on where I am in that moment. When I do have the time to work more diligently on a piece, she listens thoughtfully, praising the good parts and offering gentle suggestions on how I could improve. She sometimes will paint visual pictures for me of how the music should sound ("make it sound like children running through a meadow"), which is silly but also useful! Glynis knows how to bring out the best in my playing, and shows genuine enthusiasm when I master something hard. My playing has dramatically improved over the past few months, and I've really enjoyed spending time with Glynis at the piano.

I'd recommend Glynis to any adult looking to improve their piano skills. She is absolutely fantastic.

About Azuri
Learning is one of my main pursuits. My name is Azuri and I have studied music for over a decade and have my degree in guitar performance from musicians institute. I've had the gift of studying many artistic crafts and spend my time today trying to further my own study, while sharing what I've learned with my students.

Art is one of the most important tools we have as a culture and contains in it a shared history, tradition and the keys to future ones. Whether it be through the primal qualities of music or the impulses of dance, the records of drawing or descriptions of writing, these are the tools for our expression. I have had the great fortune to study, in many different settings, a small piece of these traditions and sharing them is paramount in respect to receiving them. Teaching Philosophy -

My teaching philosophy is built on well rounded communication, explanation and examples. So, that a student can truly understand and learn a topic, surrounded in a very humorous, light and supportive environment.
Along with being provided good information, a student learns better and feels more motivated to learn when there is a balance of positive support and confidence building accompanied by constructive criticism and examples/information that can help a student assess what ever walls they may be meeting in their musical growth.

I understand that all students/artists have different goals they wish to achieve. So it is very important to me to accommodate each individuals needs and wants to help them grow in the fields they wish too; However, In that I have played music for a long time, I understand there are certain things that a student may not have been exposed to yet; It is important that while focusing on a students artistic goals they respect and are open to the suggestion and guidance of their teacher.

I truly believe music has an amazing influence on the world and has the ability to change peoples way of thinking. Therefore, I try and keep an open awareness to all music, so that I can understand all different musical languages utilized to communicate to people, and I don't believe I will ever know them all. I hold it to attention to influence my students somewhat similarly so that they can shape the landscape of how we communicate musically in the future.

I also try and be very patient with my students. Knowing that when I feel rushed, it makes information more difficult to comprehend, remember and allocate. I love watching the gears run in my students head, so I try and provide information that pushes a student but is within their abilities.

HUMOR is very important. I like to break people out of their shell by telling a joke and hopefully getting one back, so they feel more comfortable and free. One of a Artists worst enemies are nerves. Keeping things light-hearted and maybe even a little small talk can be very helpful to a students development and growth on a topic. After all, Art is meant to be fun and we should enjoy every moment of it, in fact we should enjoy every moment in life period.

I understand music requires focus and discipline and I have certain expectation of a student to understand that and practice. You can't buy chops, you can't buy music theory etc. you can get help but eventually your the one who must understand it and play it.

I am here to help you. Based on what I know and what I have extensively studied, I will do all that I can to help you achieve your musical goals. I am here to answer your questions and help you grow. I love teaching because I love sharing knowledge; As long as your seek it, it is here for you. Otherwise, I'd still love to hear some jokes.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm very disciplined but am also very light hearted. It's important for me to assess things seriously, so that one can understand a topic or piece of information.

I generate my lessons based on the individuals needs and therefore draw from various curriculums, sources and examples, such as : MI curriculum for ear training, Theory, Single string Technique, Reading, Rhythm guitar, Ted Greenes Chord Chemistry, Berklee Guitar Method, as well as The Real Book, other artist books(Eric Clapton, etc.) The Guitar Players Hand Book, Bach pieces and self developed curriculums, relative to the topic at hand and students personal goals, amongst many others.

-Beginning students within three months of consistent lessons should have the ability to solo and playing chords to songs that they are interested in and songs provided in the lesson along with a basic understanding of the major scale and its relationship to all of the diatonic music.

-intermediate students should have an elevated understanding of scale and chord patters along with the theory that explains modal relationships and use of these concepts.

-Advanced students should learn all of diatonic scale shapes and modes assuming they don't already know them in which case their specifically situation will be assessed

-Professional students I expect to have specific questions therefore where they grow should be largely subjective.

Overall, in a short amount of time on a scale of 1 - 10 I expect to in three months at-least elevate a students musical abilities one full point if not more.

To me every student is unique and special, therefore I design the lesson around what they need and or want to learn. With the younger students, I strongly suggest we work out of a book as well as me giving them handouts to work on too. There are many and various books by Faber and Faber I love to use. Hal Leonard and Alfred Publishing have some great books depending on the students needs. With kids, it's important to keep it fun and interesting, and get them on a practice schedule. I believe one must have much patience with the younger students and the level of communication must be high, keeping them engaged and focused. With teens and adults, it depends on where they are at, and I always ask what they want to concentrate on. A well rounded piano lesson would work on reading, technique, theory, songs. Again, depending on the type of student, the lesson would incorporate more /and or less of these components.
I've been coined the "Chord Queen" by many students because of my fascination with how theory plays a subconscious role in songwriters who write by ear and if I'm teaching songwriting, we are looking at how the song is structured, the lyrics,the music, and of course the harmony and arrangement and I'm here to guide the student to be able to finish the song, and them be happy when it comes to fruition.

Robin really took the time to understand our daughter's strengths and weaknesses to determine how best to approach improving her piano playing. She didn't just teach out of a book, rather she worked on the fundamentals that are needed in order to build a firm foundation. Elise likes her as a teacher and was very attentive through the whole lesson.

Nothing is quite as rewarding as writing your own material, however, it's easy to feel stuck with an idea if you don't know how to fully develop it. I will help you take that one lick/chord change/vocal melody you've been working on and turn it into a fully fleshed out song. We'll take the time to learn the individual roles and functions of certain song sections, and pretty soon you'll be writing your best material with much more focus and confidence!

If you're going to hire a guitar teacher, your lessons should be something you look forward to every week. The majority of instructors use a one-size-fits-all approach, and as a result, their students can quickly become frustrated and lose interest. I've always found this unfortunate because playing the guitar can be such an incredibly enjoyable and rewarding experience.

With each one of my students, I take into account how much time they are willing to practice, what playing styles interest them, and what teaching approach works best. I then come up with a lesson plan that is specifically catered to their needs.

Music has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old, when my father would record my brother and I singing. I always loved singing and learned many of my favorite songs as a child.

I started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade, which has led me all the way to receiving my degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education! I was lucky enough to attend one of the nation's top music schools, The Peabody Institute, and I now work toward my Master's degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have enjoyed performing in everything from big-band-lead to principal trumpet in the orchestra, leading brass quintets and brass ensembles, and much more! The trumpet has been a huge passion for as long as I can remember now!

While I was learning songs as a child, I decided I wanted to join a band! Now here we are 10 years later and
I've have the fortune of performing as a lead singer in bands across the country, and let me tell you there is no bigger thrill than getting in-front of a crowd full of cheering fans, performing music you love.

I've also been playing the guitar for just under 10 years. Playing the guitar has been both a complete joy, but also a fantastic learning experience. I have been learning songs of my favorite artists and even written my own material,and having the opportunity to immerse myself in my favorite music and create music of my own has taught me so much more about music and being a musician. I hope to impart this experience onto all of my students.

Whether it's trumpet, voice, or guitar, I love all things music and my #1 objective is to for my students to learn how it feels to experience what music REALLY has to offer, so to you reading this, let's make some noise!

I've been taking lessons with Matt for about 2 months now. Right away it was a very comfortable environment and vibe, which is important, especially as a beginning, aspiring singer. Takes the lessons slow and easy going at first, then jumps into exercises and focuses on directly what style the student is interested in. Very awesome dude, would definitely recommend! Thanks Matt!

My first opportunity to teach songwriting came while I was in charge of the music program at Santa Monica Montessori school. The kids there all new that I was a songwriter and played in a band, so they would freely come to me with their ideas. I decided to make a songwriting unit of study that culminated in a final showing of their creations. Some chose to use the school mac laptop computers running garage band to flesh out their ideas and create a sound recording, while some elected a more traditional approach of pencil and paper and an instrument or voice as they crafted their songs.
I am largely self taught through experience collaborating with other writers and producers in bands I have worked with. But even early on I saw that I needed professional help, so I first turned to books on the craft, then to professional workshops and seminars, and eventually to joining associations of songwriters such as SongsAlive, and Performing rights organizations like BMI where you can not ...

I am a firm believer in the power of music to heal, entertain, and teach. It is our first and most vital universal human language and as such, I believe we all have the ability to learn how to communicate beautifully with music to express our deepest feelings. As a teacher it is my privilege and pleasure to help you develop.

From classical violin to jazz piano my early musical education not only spanned genres and instruments but also geographically from Austin Texas to Madison Wisconsin and finally brought me to Los Angeles where I currently reside and produce and teach music professionally.

He has released three CDs, had songs featured in compilations and in feature length film, toured North America, and taught guitar, piano, and voice both privately and in an all ages Montessori school in Santa Monica. He consistently played in a variety of bands while earning an A.A. in music from SMC and later a B.A. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA, where he earned distinction as an excellent student both academically and in musical performance. He brought passion to his performances with legends, Fransisco Aguabellas Afro Cuban ensemble, Brazilian Batucada ensemble, African-American gospel choir, music and dance of Ghana, and the Balinese Gamelan ensemble. As a member of several original LA bands, (Las Manchas, Samson Simpson, Toussaint, Mentone, Cloth and Spicy Fernandez) he has performed at world famous venues and toured North America. He co-wrote and co-produced the first EP records by Samson Simson with Ronen Navah, and also co-produced Mentone's first full-length record, "Empire" with Ronen Navah and Aki Ehara" Currently he is developing his new band, Spicy Fernandez, which has released a few singles on the internet and is getting a good buzz from Industry heavy weights.

I believe in custom tailoring a curriculum to fit the students needs, while still providing them with the same basic tools all musicians need to develop in order to play well (both with themselves and with others). Obviously, some students require more structure and discipline, while others have a stronger work ethic. Some may even need a teacher that is more laid back to balance them out, but more so my job is to facilitate learning and guide. A student studying with me can expect to receive a general assessment of their skill level in musicianship, theory, and on their instrument within the first couple of lessons (or once I feel that I have experienced enough of their abilities). Based on that assessment, I will work with the student to develop a plan of small goals to work toward. Progress will be monitored weekly and larger goals will unfold naturally in accord with the students own dreams and musical ambitions. Within 3 to 6 months of study with me students will learn to play a range of simple songs, basic scales, exercises, finger positions, and have a solid foundation for listening to, and playing to rhythm.

I excel at popular music genres such as pop, blues, R&B, rock, and jazz. I am also trained classically and enjoy the challenges of standard repertoire from Bach to Chopin.
I began studying music as a student of the Suzuki method. However, today I find that my own practice resembles most closely, the Kodály, Dalcroze, and Orff-Schulwerk methodologies in philosophy and application.

Paul is very talented and, a very good and patient teacher. He is prepared for the class even before you arrive at his place, and communicates his thoughts very clearly. He is ready for a challenge if you give him a random song which you wanted to practice, and he begins to play the song on the guitar without any tabs or notes, instead just by listening to it a couple of times.

He's great to work with, and I'd choose him as my guitar teacher again if I ever live in the surrounding area.

Have learned so much and more to learn

Paul is very passionate about music and teaching in general. He does a fantastic job when it comes to instructing and I'm excited to see future progress within my skills. I Definitely recommend him for great music taste and for creating a good atmosphere with his students.

I'm a trumpet and piano playing songwriter that received his bachelors of music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music where I studied with Michael Sachs (principal trumpet/Cleveland Orchestra). Afterwards I attended the University of Southern California masters of music program where I studied with Boyde Hood (utility trumpet/Los Angeles Philharmonic). Prior teachers have included James Darling, Raymond Mase, Steven Ravaglioli, and the late Leon Russell.
I am a founding member of the Ilium Brass Quintet. The IBQ were the brass quintet fellows under the direction of the American Brass Quintet at the Aspen Music Festival as well as finalists in the Coleman and Fischoff chamber music competitions.
I am also a founding member of Brass Pacifica, a brass quintet that has dedicated itself to teaching at schools all over Southern Califor
nia. Brass Pacifica is on the teaching artist roster of The Los Angeles Music Center and the Orange County Performing Arts Center and has performed at hundreds of schools for thousands of students.
