I have started scores of beginner students on trombone who have advanced to a high level of performance ability. I teach basic musicianship and music theory as well as trombone and cover classical and jazz styles. My students expand their ranges and take on higher difficulty as their lessons progress.

This is the first lesson I got to listen to of my son working with Nathan. Usually I'm not home from work. I am really impressed with how much he was able to help my son improve so quickly. I wish we had started this much sooner.

I have been playing trombone, and more specifically, bass trombone, for over 20 years. I have studied trombone at New Mexico State University with Dr. Allan Kaplan, and at CalArts with James Miller of the LA Philharmonic. I have played, performed and recorded professionally with choirs, theater productions, jazz bands, marching and concert bands, symphony orchestras, small ensembles, and brass bands all over the world.

I work to make my lessons enjoyable AND engaging. I will spend time with you on fundamentals such as key and scale studies, tuning, functional harmony, breathing studies, arpeggios, mouthpiece studies, rhythm and counting exercises all the way into more difficult materials such as extending your range, melodic and improvisation skills, single- and double-valve studies, and even into extended techniques, such as multiphonics, split tones, circular breathing, quarter tonal methods and more.

About Tyler

Hi, I'm Tyler! Born and raised in Roswell, New Mexico, I am the son of a band director. That being said, I have literally been involved in music since I was an infant! I played trombone, bass trombone, and bass guitar all the way through high school, and went to New Mexico State University where I

Tyler arrived early, spent lots of time with my unruly daughter, and kept her on track! He's a good combination of fun/playful but also has a natural authority so that my daughter actually listens to his instruction. Well done and thank you Tyler!

Great first lesson - looking forward to the next one.
Nicolas O.
I feel like I learned a lot in an hour and he really helped me find an anchor point that I can go back to if I am stuck on a note. I realized that he went over every proven method that I learned throughout my experiences from elementary school to highschool and then added on to them by explaining how these methods help. He even showed me methods usually taught to college musicians.

The reason I always believed in private lessons is because no matter how few or how many you take, the learning process gets expedited immensely.

I definitely would recommend this teacher for learning a brass instrument.

Luther stays where I’m at and then helps me go the next step. That is useful for consistent gradual progress without the frustrations of moving either too slow or too fast (I am a beginning tenor saxophone player). Nice interpersonal style, patient and easy going, while methodical.
Geoff K.
I think Luther is great. He works with my 10-year old son on piano, singing and even trumpet and violin as needed. My son has to work hard to progress, and Luther customizes the lesson plan for him and seems to understand him well. I'm really excited about them working together.

"David taught my daughter when she first decided to play the trombone in middle school band. It takes a special person to work with a moderately motivated, quiet 12 year old girl. He was patient, providing her with plenty of skills to achieve 1st chair without pushing too hard, or the wrong way. However, without his guidance, she would never have attempted to try out for mid-state. He urged her to play music she liked, but also made sure she was exposed to jazz, improv and other styles. He accommodated our ever changing schedule, and probably hid frustration well when she forgot her instrument or didn't practice. We couldn't have asked for a better teacher!"
