I've been teaching Drums since 2004 and recently started back January 2013. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play all rudiments and as time goes on you'll be able to play in bands and in JH and HS bands. I typically use the Haskell Harr, and now include Alfred's Drum Method book for Snare; Tommy Igo for drum-set. His posters from Vic Firth are great resources (which I send out to new students). I love working with students of all ages and experience levels; I can't wait to meet you!

Beginning to Intermediate Drum lessons and beats that are actually used in today's and yesteryear's "hit songs".

It's no secret, drums is the backbone or "foundation" to any hit song.

I break down drumming to its most basic rudiments so that you will grow by leaps and bounds instead of just crawling along.

You have to walk before you can run so getting it right initially is very important to moving forward and getting you playing your favorite songs quickly and accurately..

I strive above all else to inspire my students. Work ceases to be a burden when I am learning something that inspires me; it instead becomes a joy to engage in the process. Teachers are channels of inspiration between what is being learned and the person who is learning it. In my own teaching, I aim to inspire the same joy in my students that I discovered when I first began studying percussion.

About Willis

I studied drum set at Berklee College of Music, and graduated in 2018 with a double-major in Drum Set Performance and Music Business. My 5yo son began playing the drums during the pandemic with Willis as his instructor. It's been wonderful to see him learn how to read and play music in such a short time. Willis has both the passion and patience to make it work remotely. If you're thinking about it for your kids, I would encourage you to take the leap!

Will has an ability to very quickly adapt to the level of his student and tries (successfully) to find ways to make an immediate impact regardless of skill level. He has definitely done that with me. He very clearly has the depth of knowledge and experience necessary to teach both novice and experienced drummers alike. He also has a calm and patient demeanor that makes him very easy to be around. After just a few lessons (and some homework!) he has given me the confidence to continue pursuing my dream of being a drummer!

I took lessons from Willis for a year online via zoom. He was a wonderful teacher- supportive, knowledgeable, and very encouraging. I’m an adult beginner- 53 years old- and it’s a challenge to try something new and be willing to mess up in front of another person. But Willis made it easy. He knew when to push me to try a new skill, and when to go slow and remind me of all I’d already accomplished. He has a very positive and approachable teaching style. I highly recommend him to anyone as a drum teacher!

Mr. A. has a talent for teaching that makes it a privilege to be one of his students. Our son has been thoroughly enjoying the time under his tutelage, and continues to do so via video while in-house is not an option. "Great teacher for our 8 year old!

Matt has taught our 8 yr old for about 8 months and he has learned so much! Though our son is a bit shy, Matt has been very patient, positive, and makes his lessons fun. He lets him know it's ok to make mistakes too which is very comforting to him. He is now able to play with his older brother who plays guitar. Matt worked with them together to teach them a song for their school variety show and they are so excited! He is friendly, always on time, and very passionate about teaching. He explains things clearly and gives him a few beats to work on before the next lesson. He loves drumming now:) We highly recommend him."

"I took lessons from Ray for about 4 months because I wanted to take my drumming skills to the next level. Ray's teaching method is unique and effective. It's simple as that!. After 2 lessons my band mates started noticing better chops, more control on the drum set (as far as dynamics) and tasteful fills. My hand/foot coordination has improved radically thanks to those exercises customized and developed by Ray that target the weak areas. At my first lesson, Ray and I discussed my short but demanding list of concepts that I wanted to work. He was able to understand all my concerns in a heartbeat and put together a teaching plan that covered more than what I was expecting. Needless to say that Ray is a humble person and a great drummer ( I stole a of of licks from him!). The studio is very neat and organized. It has technology and equipment that as a student you can use for free. Another advantage is that Ray's studio has two drum sets so the theory and the actual practice happen in real time. Also, the studio location is very convenience. If you are a drummer looking for effective drum lessons, any style, any level don't hesitate to contact Ray. You won't regret it!. He is an A+ drum instructor."

"Bottom line: I enthusiastically recommend Mike for virtual drum lessons…esp. if you’re not convinced that virtual music lessons are effective /worth it – Mike’s style is perfect for online lessons.

Details

About me: adult student, drummed throughout high school (band and private instruction for a few years), but was always more interested in the kit than taking the time to really learn rudiments and develop my hands. Now, with limited space in my home and the pandemic making everything virtual, I thought it was a good time get back into it and give virtual music lessons a shot. I wanted to find a teacher comfortable with focusing on / teaching this discipline. After some research, I found Mike, whom I took ~ 20 lessons with. Though I was initially a bit skeptical of online music lessons (had taken in-person lessons as a kid, before online lessons were even possible), I quickly realized that learning and development was not only possible, but probable with Mike as my teacher (and my willingness to practice regularly).

Mike’s professionalism shows in multiple ways, including his drumming proficiency (of course) and knowledge, overall instruction and communication style, punctuality, and the professional setup / studio that he works out of. He also has a great attitude toward his students’ progression, and an impressive knowledge of drum education (especially), professional drummers, and music and recordings. We had a lot of very enjoyable and insightful conversations re: the techniques of different drummers. I realize that is something that may be harder with younger students, but it’s a nice bonus when you can (if you want) have an actual conversation with your instructor (vs. one way instructional-based communication). He also gave me a ton of recommendations for music and/or instructional resources to check out (which is important for musical growth). I was also able to “bounce” a number of equipment / brand related questions off of him.

Re: the actual instruction - over the course of several months, we reviewed a number of sticking / rudiment exercises that definitely helped to develop my hands, esp. my double stroke roll. To introduce these exercises, he shared them on his screen and reviewed them (including playing them). He’d then email them. He also gave me a rudimentary-based piece to work toward. That was cool because it brought all the lessons together.

To summarize, I learned quite a few things and definitely developed my hands (and can play some things now that I couldn’t play in high school). I had to stop b/c of some major schedule changes that are significantly restricting my free time, but I definitely plan on resuming once my schedule returns to normal.

Like anything, you’ll get the greatest reward (and value for your money) if you take the lessons seriously and practice regularly."
