I start with the beginning skills on Essential Elements and then use fiddle methods
I am experienced (3 years) in home school tutoring. I mostly work with Florida Virtual School students. I overlook their tests and assignments, and help them with preparations for Discussion Based Assessmemts (DBA). I also help parents with required annual evaluations and how to sign up with home education department. For my tutoring sessions I use skills that include goal-directedness, I teach how to organize learning in small steps and how to set them up; I always strive to motivate and engage my students to make them interested in learning and have fun; I also use self-control skills to teach how to avoid distractions and I show how to use different focusing strategies. I use positive mind set skills to teach how to use failures as learning opportunities.

um and Education; and Masters in Arts (2012) in Teaching English to speakers of other languages, and Bachelors in Music Education (2010), both from Florida Atlantic University, as well as a degree in violin performance from Chicago. I studied piano in Chicago for 10 years & taught both piano & violin for over 20 years. I also teach flute & cello for the past 5 years, as I studied them during my Music Education program. I have taught music for over 24 years using the traditional and Suzuki methods. I am fan of the Essential Elements method and I Can Read Music book for string instruments, and the Alfred's Piano Library for piano. Alfred's piano library can be used for any age as they also have books especially made for adult learners. I also like their music flash cards. For teaching music theory I mostly used Fundamentals of Piano Theory (9 levels) combined with Master Theory (6 levels) books.
I personalize every lesson, and always set goals for my students. Most of my violin students are members of the Florida Youth Orchestra as well as the Gold Coast Youth Orchestra and my piano students participate in Pompano Beach Piano competition and the annual Piano Guild auditions. I teach any age and any level, and always stress that learning a new instrument is very similar to learning a new language, it needs a lot of patience, persistence and repetitions. My lessons are customized to my students needs, and are work in progress as they needs may change over time. I always remind my students that music can give them instant gratification when they learn to play favorite songs. I always encourage my students to tell me about their music preferences, so I can incorporate them in their music lessons.
*** Lesson Details *** All my tutoring sessions include reviews of previously learned material and if possible the use of technology. I use students books but often bring extra study materials if necessary. All my lessons include technique and reading music. I like to use the Finger Power for piano students and Essential Elements for my string students, and scales for both. Music theory: I use Master Theory and Fundamentals of Piano Theory books for younger ages, Alfred's music flash cards to support learning notes and musical terminology, and of course the fun part performance.
Besides Essential Elements for strings I also use String Tunes and I Can Read Music to add more fun to the lessons as well as support reading music during the lesson. For piano students I use Holiday Treats book, which comes in 2 different levels: Beginner & Intermediate, so my students have a new songs for a specific holiday.
*** Studio Equipment *** I always bring violin with me to be able to show what I teach.
*** Travel Equipment *** The students need to have their books and assigned material ready for tutoring. Instrumental students needs to have their music books, flashcards & instrument available as well as a pencil. I always stress with my students to be organized and prepared for their lesson, this way they will be able to focus better during the lesson. I always bring my violin with me. I also ask that the room where the lesson takes place be free of any distractions, such other siblings or any other noise. The quiet environment helps in faster learning.

I teach Irish, Scottish, Bluegrass and Old-time fiddle. I am a Scottish Fiddle Regional Champion and have performed at the Celtic Colours International Music Festival, as well as playing Bluegrass fiddle at the Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival.
With a PhD in Ethnomusicology and a Masters in Violin Performance, Kathleen teaches everything from Celtic fiddle tunes to classical concertos. Dr. Lavengood has performed with the Miami Symphony Orchestra, Indiana's Richmond Symphony Orchestra, the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, the Reno Chamber Orchestra and has served as concertmaster and soloist for the Chehalem Symphony Orchestra in Newberg, Oregon. I have been teaching Irish fiddle style for 15 years. I will usually start the student in either a basic fiddle book or Suzuki to learn how to do proper bowing, positioning and technique. The student will be able to read notes. If desired, I will also teach the more advanced about chord progression through the songs. I do know the appalachian style also but it is asked for less frequently.
I have been teaching private violin for over 20 years, and private viola/cello for about 10. I have taught in Charles and St. Mary's County Public schools. I am a member of American Strings Teacher's Association, National Association for Music Educators (Maryland Music Educators Association), and the Music Teachers National Association (Music Teachers Association of Charles County). As a teacher, I'm very student oriented. We move at your pace. The more you practice, the faster we move. I do encourage learning to read music, but I use multiple ways of teaching to reach my students. Everyone learns in a different way. My primary job is to see you achieve your goals in relation to your instrument. I also encourage that you take every opportunity to perform. There are many groups in the area that allow for different ages and styles of music
. I can help you understand what is going on behind the music and hopefully see what the composer was hoping to convey, if that is something you want to know. When I was a student I always wanted to know "why?". As a teacher, you will know why if I do.
*** Lesson Details *** I try to keep my lesson area as stress free as possible. It's OK to make mistakes in my studio. I would like you to bring a notebook to lessons as well as your music and instrument. I write as much as I can down because if you were like I was during lessons, I would forget everything I was supposed to be watching for after 3 days. Like I said above, we move at your pace. The more you practice, the faster we move. Questions are a good thing. It shows interest. But sometimes you just have to stop asking questions and just take the leap of faith. We start with note reading as well as proper form and the parts of the instrument. We also deal with general care. I will tune your instrument every time you come in for lessons until you learn how to tune it yourself. We will review the day before, I will check on what work you've done and then move onto the next song/ technique etc. After we learn how to pluck the first 8 notes, we start with scales and bowing.
After that we move through the "usual" routine. Scale, etude, song(s) or school test songs, audition requirements etc.
I try to keep the same routine because for some students it's easier for them to focus if they know the lesson is going to move in a familiar way. It's reassuring. After we become proficient in the basics, we move into whatever genre you would like to play, within reason. If you are in the school orchestra we will work towards you getting an A.
I would say I'm more laid back when you are not preparing for an audition. Auditions require a lot of work and I want you to do as close to perfect as possible. I become fairly demanding during that time.
In about 6 months, you can play almost any tune you can hear on the radio. Explaining where you could be gets fairly technical and I might as well be talking like Charlie Brown's teacher.

If you’re looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable and patient strings teacher, you will love Mrs. Heins. Both of my sons have been taking lessons from Mrs. Heins for several years (one for viola and one for cello). They have learned so much under her instruction, such as earning All-County and All-State honors. They also practice their live performance skills twice a year during informal musical concerts. Mrs. Heins also offers participation in the Royal Conservatory Music Development program, which can earn your child credit for college. Had a wonderful time with my teacher she restrung my violin and I got a trade in for an adult si and adult size because I had purchased one for ciao but I got it at music store where she works and they gave me another one with the trade-in and I only had to pay $50 I had a nice time with Miss Hines I even was so excited to go into my lessons I get it two hours earlier and she excepted me so that was good she had time to string the restring the Valium and not show me a lot of things that I needed to do and I’ve also purchased the first book so I’m I’m really excited
I instruct in the Scottish style of fiddling, with a rounded approach, including introductions to the Cape Breton, Highland, Grand Northeast, and Shetland regional styles.
I am a traditional Scottish musician specializing in 18th century music. I have studied Highland bag piping since 2001 and Scottish Fiddling since 2002 (with a background in classical violin). I teach both Scottish Fiddle and Highland Bagpipes, as well as Scottish Small pipes and Border pipes.
I have supplemented these areas of knowledge by studying Gaelic since 2007 and Clàrsach (wire-strung harp) since 2012. I have performed with the Potomac Valley Scottish Fiddle Club and the City of Alexandria Pipes and Drums since 2004, for weddings and Scottish Country Dances since 2006, and founded the Scottish Folk-Acoustic band The Devil's Tailors in 2008, and lead the only DC-area open Scottish jam session. My approach to Scottish traditional music is holistic; I feel it's important to experience how song feeds into instrumental music, and how the instrumental traditions interact with one another, and impart that broader view to my students. My focus is mostly on the folk traditions, though for bagpipe students, I teach the current and formal pipe band technique and repertoire as a foundation.
I have twice qualified for the US National Scottish Fiddling Championship, and was 4th place overall in Grade 4 Senior out of almost 850 pipers in 2006, and have been taking an extended hiatus from competition.

Peter is very patient and exceptionally knowledgeable. He is very analytical in his teaching. I am a new student (only a few lessons) and I am confident he will be able to provide the critical but positive instruction and encouragement that I need. His enthusiasm and passion for music is contagious. In fact, he gives detailed oral histories and music theory explanations related to the topic of the lesson. Most teachers boot you out when time is up - not Peter - he always finishes on the right note. Plus he has an adorable cat assistant, Rory, as a side kick.

I began my violin studies at age 9, with my public school string program. I continued through high school and into college, playing and singing with auditioned district ensembles, school musicals, and chamber choirs, coming in as runner up in my high school's concerto competition, landing a full-tuition scholarship, and performing twice in Carnegie Hall. I studied opera, vocal pedagogy, and passed my piano proficiency exam from the advanced class.
In 2003, I earned my violin performance degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and soon after, joined the Kansas City-based Celtic folk group, Tullamore. I have enjoyed 13 seasons with this lauded regional group, playing countless esteemed Celtic festivals across the country and embarking on five international tours of Ireland and Scotland, as well as a Caribbean cruise hosted for our fans. Our sixth international tour is scheduled for 2019 in Scotland.
In 2014, I relocated to Hampton, Virginia, where I auditioned for the Hampton Roads Philharmonic, and currently play as a first violinist.
From 2015-2018, I had the joy of fiddling and singing with Brackish Water Jamboree, an award-winning Americana band, featured on NPR's Blue Plate Special and Out of the Box series with Paul Shugrue, and host of the NorFOLK Festival.
Throughout this time, I have enjoyed teaching a full and enriching music studio of students: hosting recitals, open mics, and ensemble rehearsals, and watching students achieve goals they didn't know were even possible. Is that a fiddle... or a violin? It's a common question, and one that baffles many beginner musicians.
So what's the answer?
When it comes to the actual instrument, there actually aren't any differences. What distinguishes a violin from a fiddle is what kind of music you're playing with it. A musician playing folk, bluegrass or country, for example, would most likely refer to their instrument as a fiddle; those who play other genres (jazz, classical, etc.) typically call theirs a violin.
