Playing a brass instrument can be a fun and rewarding experience when approached in the correct way. I help all my students develop a good attitude toward playing music, as well as setting them up for success in developing a good sound and technique. I have helped students prepare for all situations, including auditions, adjudications, and yearly band concerts.

About Joel
Hello! I have played brass instruments in many different ensembles over the last 15 years, including concert bands, jazz ensembles, brass quintets, marching bands, drum and bugle corps, and more, and I would like to share these experiences with you as you build your own rewarding experiences with music.

I attended Hofstra University and The Hartt School, earning a B.S. in Music Education and an M.M. in Euphonium Performance, respectively. I am available for students of all ages and backgrounds, and will attend to the goals of each student separately and deliberately.

Take lessons with a experienced teacher that actively performs and teaches. What makes me a good teacher is the fact that I struggled during the first few years that I started playing. I had a work through those struggles in order to become the musician I am today, so I know how to break things down and to cater lessons to each individual student. There is no cookie cutter method for all, we each have our own issues to work on. Some naturally gifted teachers will just tell you to play something and make it work...but since I had to work hard to become successful, I can use what I learned to help you to achieve success. I will help you to build a strong fundamental base and to turn your weaknesses into strengths! Whether you are preparing for school band or ensemble, for honor band auditions, college auditions, or solo and ensemble festivals, I would be happy to help you to become the musician that you want to become.

About Christian
I've been playing brass for over 20 years, and have been teaching for about 20 years as well. I am married, have two young children and two cats. I'm so blessed to have had the opportunities to perform and travel as a musician, and I wouldn't have made it to this point with out the Lord's blessing and without people in my live teaching me, mentoring me, and supporting me. It took a lot of work to get to this point, and if you work hard you can get there too. We all start in the same place, which is, knowing nothing, and we go from there! I would be happy to help you to get there as well.

Currently, I perform as the principal euphonium with the 40th Infantry Division Band of the Army National Guard, the principal euphonium of the Southern California Brass Consortium, and the principal euphonium with the Salvation Army's Western Ter
ritory Staff Band. I also play with my church brass band at the Salvation Army!

I have experience performing as a soloist in San Diego, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Las Vegas, New Jersey, Atlanta, Seattle, Norway, United Kingdom and most recently Angola. I've also performed in Alaska, Arizona, Denver, New York, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Germany. I enjoy playing in almost any medium from Brass Band, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Big Band, and even Bavarian Octoberfest Bands. I've also been known to play a little valve trombone in contemporary worship bands, but don't tell any slide trombone players that because they tend to get jealous!

I have a passion for helping people grow and improve as musicians, whether you are 8 years old or 80 years old, or any age. We can all improve and grow!

Teaching the tuba is a particular passion of mine. I have enjoyed helping students with sound production, technique and developing their musicality. I believe in building a firm foundation with a good tone quality and proper technique. I enjoy helping students reach their potential!

About Laurie
I am a professional trombonist and pianist and have three degrees from the University of Michigan, including a D.M.A. in Trombone Performance. I have taught piano since I was 16 and have accompanied singers and instrumentalists in concerts. For many years, I was a trombonist in the Sarasota Orchestra and previously was Assistant Professor of Trombone at Miami University.

I have started many students on trombone and tuba, as well as piano.
Students will find me to be encouraging, yet demanding. I cater to different learning styles and strive to learn how each student learns best.

Learn how to master the art of tuba playing with a current Juilliard student. David Freeman, 21, has studied with Alan Baer of the New York Philharmonic for the past 4 years, and is expected to graduate from The Juilliard School in 2018. Originally from Los Angeles, David has had the pleasure of taking lessons with and working alongside many of LA's top tuba players, including Jim Self, Norm Pearson, Jeff Anderson, Scott Sutherland, and John van Houten. His lessons focus on preparing students of any level to take auditions, apply for schools/colleges, and play in bands/orchestras.

About David
David Freeman, 21, currently attends The Juilliard School in New York City, pursuing a bachelor of music degree in tuba performance. His primary teacher is tubist Alan Baer, of the New York Philharmonic. Before his acceptance into Juilliard, David studied and worked with many professional musicians throughout Los Angeles, CA. He has had the privilege of taking lessons, attending master classes, and performing with some of the world’s best tubists including Jim Self, Roger Bobo, Norm Pearson, Jeff Anderson, and John Van Houten. He studied primarily with freelance trombonist Amy Bowers, of USC.

David's past teaching experiences include giving masterclasses, private lessons, and coaching small to large ensembles at a high school level. As a former drum major, David led/conducted his band frequently, preparing them for performances and com
petitions. He has a great amount of experience in audition preparation/success, as it is his most specialized subject. During his high school years between 2010-2014, David took over 15 live auditions on the tuba, earning himself a 100% success rate. He landed spots in ensembles all across California including Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, All-State Orchestra (both CODA and CBDA), All-State Winds, All-Southern Winds, and many more. During his summers, David attended Idyllwild Arts, where he landed the first chair spot two summers in a row by live audition, and won the orchestra spot by recorded audition during his final summer. Because of his dedication and strong preparation, David won a spot in every college he applied to including Juilliard, University of Southern California, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, University of Colorado Boulder, and California State University Long Beach.

Though he is a full time student and member of the Juilliard Orchestra, David also has had many performance opportunities outside of school. In 2014, he performed the Vaughan-Williams Tuba Concerto with the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, and since then, he has had the pleasure of performing with the Brooklyn Symphony, Mannes College, Weill-Cornell, Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, and the Altino Brothers at Carnegie Hall.

David's brass quintet, Apex Brass, regularly performs in prestigious venues all across New York, including Alice Tully Hall, New York Supreme Court, Morgan Library, and various museums. In the summer of 2017, the quintet took off to Japan, where they competed in the 9th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. Shortly after, Apex was invited to Tianjin, China, where they performed at the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Juilliard-Tianjin campus, and gave a recital at the Tianjin Conservatory.

David is a truly superb teacher! I was in a bit of a unique situation where I had to learn tuba for a specific performance. Never having played tuba before, (or any brass instrument, for that matter) I was a bit worried. I took some lessons from David, and within two weeks, I got my chops together. David's instruction gave me the confidence and abilities that I needed to perform in a rather high pressure setting. Highly recommended.

Successful teacher with 11 years teaching experience. My students have consistently gone on to become successful musicians at the state and collegiate levels earning scholarships to some of the best music schools in the nation. You will be challenged to be among the very best! I know what it takes to overcome obstacles and be a successful musician! My experience includes participation in award-winning ensembles, studying with world-class orchestral musicians, and performing with some of the most well-known names in the world of tuba.

About Brian
I am a band director of 11 years. I have taught and performed professionally in the Jackson, TN and Memphis, TN regions for 7 years and have been active as a director in Florida for 4 years.

I graduated from the University of Memphis in 2007 with a masters of music in performance. While at Memphis, I studied with Charles Schulz (principal tubist, Memphis Symphony Orchestra), John Mueller (euphonium), and David Spencer (trumpet). I also had the opportunity to perform with world class tubist Jens Bjorn-Larsen. I was also awarded the Clement Santi Memorial Brass Scholarship.

During my teaching tenure in west Tennessee, I had students earn the top chairs at All-State, win the concerto competitions, be accepted to numerous schools of music (including Northwestern University, University of Memphis, University of Tennessee, Belmont University
, University of Mississippi), and be awarded the highest scholarship for entering freshmen in the Rudi Scheidt School of Music (Memphis).

During my tenure in west Tennessee, I had the privilege of leading my ensembles to earning numerous awards including Superior and Excellent Ratings. I am in the process now of building a young band program to be equally successful.

I know what it means to fail. I know what it means to succeed. I know what it takes to bridge the gap between the two—dedication, hard work, and a desire to succeed.
