I teach:
TENOR BANJO - MANDOLIN - TENOR GUITAR - ACOUSTIC GUITAR
Please go to the instrument listing and it will explain about that particular Instrument.

Hello,
I first want to explain a little about the Mandolin (Italian Mandolino) means small Mandola
In Italy it is featured prominently in European Classical and Traditional music.
The mandolin is common used in Celtic, Irish, British, Brazilian and Bluegrass folk music.
It's suitable for classical, folk and popular music of all kinds.

It has 4 sets of double metal strings tuned in unison.

The A - Style Madolin teardrop shaped is commonly used amongst Folk/Celtic musicians
It's used primarily to play melody.
Irish Mandolin Tuning: G, D, A, E - Same as a Tenor Banjo and Violin.

The F - Style Mandolin is more common amongst Bluegrass musicians
It's used to play back up rhythm, mostly on the off beat & in playing solos during the break in a set where the musican plays melody.

I accommodate all students ...

Beginner to intermediate.
Mandolin is mostly known for bluegrass, but in the last few years it's become quite prominent in country, as well as other genres. It's a very fun instrument, once one gets used to the size.
Mandolin lessons mostly entail building a chord
vocabulary, and maybe learning a basic scale or two. After that students are ready to learn tons of songs.

My Teaching Philosophy

Left Hand-
Scales and arpeggios our the bedrock of music. They are the foundation of everything harmonically and melodically. We will begin with learning our major, minor and pentatonic scales and corresponding arpeggios. Once we have an understanding of those we will delve into our modes and more “exotic” scales.

Right Hand-
The right hand is our time machine. It gives us the ability to play in time and with groove and feel. We will work on rhythmic studies string crossings and practicing with a metronome. Remembering music is harmony, Melody and rhythm working as one.
For those who are new to playing music the hardest thing for some to master is rhythm/time keeping. It is the black and white right or wrong of the music world. Often times our want to progress quickly is hampered by skipping over the basic building blocks of rhythm and time keeping.
The first critical step is the concept of subdivision. Subdivision it the mind ...

I am in my mid-30s and picking up Mandolin for the first time without much background in music. Scott has been really great to learn from, teaching me not only the basics of scales and chords but he also has me working on songs and solos which I never thought I'd be able to do so early.
