I teach beginner and intermediate students. We can work on the traditional clawhammer style or the Earl Scruggs three finger picking style that defined the sound of bluegrass music. My approach to teaching is to learn songs that the student likes and is interested in playing on the banjo. Some of my favorites to teach are "Rocky Top", "Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms", "The Ballad of Jed Clampet" (Beverly Hillbillies Theme), etc. I like for my students to have fun while they learn. My goal on the banjo is to get you jamming along with others!

About P.G.
I have been playing guitar, writing songs and studying music for over 20 years. I graduated from Boston College with a degree in Music composition and theory. I am also a recording engineer and write music for TV, film and advertising. I love to teach and work with students who want to learn. Basically, I like to make music and have fun!

*** Lesson Details ***
I start working with new students by setting goals. My philosophy is to have fun and make music. Ultimately, my goal is for the student to be able to "jam" with other musicians. I picked up the guitar at age thirteen because I was inspired by Nirvana. I was quickly turned on to Jimi Hendrix, which eventually led to me discovering jazz, classical music, songwriting and eventually bluegrass. Music is a vast world and I believe in teaching songs that the student wants to play. So
I start by working on songs that are of interest to each individual student.

*** Home Equipment ***
Lessons are taught in my home. Seating for parents available. No pets. Bass and electric guitar amplifiers are provided as well as cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a guitar tuner and learning materials (i.e. music sheets and learning material). I expect the student to have a guitar, bass, banjo or ukulele to play. I also advise an amplifier for electric guitar students. I am able to bring a small practice amplifier to lessons at student location.

*** Specialties ***
On Guitar: Acoustic & Electric guitar, Rock n' Roll, Blues, Jazz, Improvisation, Merle Travis chicken pickin', slide guitar and music theory. In the world of audio recording, I am well versed in Logic Pro X. I operate Logic in my personal studio to write and record music for TV, film and advertising.

I found Zach through 'take lessons' after my daughter had a few years with an intense classical pianist. I want my daughter to have fun and appreciate music and not feel the intense pressure she was feeling with our previous instructor. Zach was the perfect choice. My daughter loves her lessons. Zach does take time off for his professional endevors. Good for him. He has always let us know and connected with us when he returns.

I teach beginning to advanced students in Scruggs or 3 finger style, melodic style, Reno style and Minstrel or stroke style. Other areas covered are basic music theory, chord inversions, back up techniques, creating leads and many other valuable subjects.

About Mark
Mark B. has played and taught banjo and mandolin for over 30 years and has performed with the Circle B Cowboys, The Blue Bell Lodge Wranglers, The Smokey Hills Wranglers and has performed at venues at Disney World, the National Festival of the West, Medora Cowboy Poetry Gathering, The Journey Museum and many more. Mark currently teaches at the Itasca School of Folk Music, The Headwaters School of Music and Art and at Overbeek Music in Bemidji, MN. Classes are also taught through community education in a number of towns as well as online.

The internet is loaded with free video lessons for banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle and every kind of instrument under the sun. But even videos can be a static method of learning when compared to personal lessons taken in real time. Nothing can replace having a teacher to guide you step by step as yo
u learn to play your favorite instrument. Interactive online lessons will help you to avoid the stumbling blocks and hang ups that occur while using books and videos – nothing can replace live lessons with a caring teacher. Now, no matter where you live, you can take lessons in real time with a qualified instructor – it’s almost like taking lessons at the local music store.

Lessons are structured for each individual student to provide the personal attention needed for effective learning.

*** Lesson Details ***
Through my in person and online lessons, a music student will not only learn to play a stringed instrument he or she will also learn important elements of basic music theory. The student will be taught timing, notation, improvisation, chords, tablature, playing in group situations and more. With this knowledge, an aspiring musician will be prepared to enjoy a lifetime of playing music. Basic music theory can be taught using popular fretted stringed instruments like guitar, banjo, mandolin, and mountain dulcimer that can be played and enjoyed for an entire lifetime. Here is some of what will be covered in your online music lessons. The fundamentals of music covered are Note Values and Rhythm, Time Signatures, Sharps and Flats, Common Scales, Chord Structure, Chord Inversions and more of the elements of music. Mark has been wonderful! He has the knowledge of music theory and a lifetime of experience playing the banjo as a professional musician. He understands the importance of that feeling of accomplishment for a beginner, all while maintaining appropriate challenges for the student to aim for. He is easy to talk to and is always encouraging, which makes me feel comfortable to make mistakes as I learn more techniques at faster tempos. I would highly recommend Mark to anyone who is remotely interested in the banjo!

I've been teaching banjo for 4 years helping students develop a love for the instrument and learn more about music along the way. My specialty is Scruggs style picking, but I'm also comfortable teaching clawhammer, reno, or melodic styles and enjoy working on hybrid and progressive styles, too. Within the first few lessons you'll have a solid base of picking and chord changes and even a few simple songs under your belt. Moving on from there I will craft lessons to move you toward a "goal song," making sure to cater your progress to your needs while keeping a focus on good technique. I enjoy working with students of all ages and experiences and I can't wait to meet you!

About Ryan
Ryan is a musician from Jefferson Park who plays a plethora of different instruments. He specializes in guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele, but also dabbles in accordion, piano, drums, harmonica and several others. Learning to play instruments is one of the true pleasures in his life and he hopes he can make it one of yours, too.

As a teacher Ryan's goals are fairly simple. First and foremost he wants to make his lessons comfortable, interesting and fun. A close second is to build a strong foundation on the basics, so as we learn more advanced techniques we have a solid base of technique to build upon. And third, an understanding of the theory and history behind the music is a great way to engage in the music beyond just the rote learning of technique.

After a brief foray in physics, Ryan settle into a degree in music at the Univer
sity of Illinois, specializing in Ethnomusicology (the study of music of different cultures). This education gave him a strong background in music theory and history in the Western tradition, but also opened him up to a vast experience of a diverse cross section of music from around the world. His insatiable love for learning new instruments started here, where he studied music from West Africa to Bali.

Currently Ryan is a co-lead singer, songwriter and stringed instrument player for the local band Distant Brothers, a folk rock band based out of Chicago. They play venues throughout the Midwest, with some of the notable venues being House of Blues, Metro and Cubby Bear in Chicago. Another highlight of his time with the band has been a collaboration with Oistrakh Symphony Orchestra, where he not only was able to play in collaboration with the orchestra, but joined in the arranging and conceptualization of some of the pieces played.

Caleb has taught me so much in only five lessons! I now can play 4 songs that I love, and I'm getting a great refresher course on music theory. He's super patient and sets very realistic expectations. I really like that he cared to ask me what songs I liked and would like to learn instead of starting with generic songs like 'twinkle twinkle' because it gave me more motivation to practice and learn. I became interested in clawhammer banjo while teaching guitar at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago in the late nineties. It is a ton of fun to play and I soon got hooked. My background as a multi-instrumentalist gives me a unique perspective on clawhammer and I use this technique not only to play/teach Old Time, but other musical styles as well.
Please note that I ONLY teach clawhammer and not 3 finger (Scruggs) style. Available to ages 13 and up.

About Leanna
I have been in the performing arts since age 3 and teaching music for over 20 years. With a Bachelor of Arts in Music (voice, classical guitar, and pedagogy) from BYU, I am a multi-instrumentalist and comfortable in many different styles and genres. I love to learn and this love infuses every aspect of my teaching style. My diverse career has included a season in the ASO Chorus under Robert Shaw, playing drums with the indie band Silent Kids, composing the theme song to PBS's Georgia Outdoors and fronting the Americana group Georgia Fireflies!
