I've been teaching banjo for 4 years helping students develop a love for the instrument and learn more about music along the way. My specialty is Scruggs style picking, but I'm also comfortable teaching clawhammer, reno, or melodic styles and enjoy working on hybrid and progressive styles, too. Within the first few lessons you'll have a solid base of picking and chord changes and even a few simple songs under your belt. Moving on from there I will craft lessons to move you toward a "goal song," making sure to cater your progress to your needs while keeping a focus on good technique. I enjoy working with students of all ages and experiences and I can't wait to meet you!

About Ryan

Ryan is a musician from Logan Square who plays a plethora of different instruments. He specializes in guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele, but also dabbles in accordion, piano, drums, harmonica and several others. I’ve only forgotten the pandemic when I’m playing the banjo with Jared. I crave clear criticism and he gives me the specifics so I can truly improve. Jared has all the qualities you want in an excellent music teacher, but what takes it to the next level for me as a student is his enthusiasm and gentle humor.

Highly recommend.

I knew nothing about the banjo when I started taking classes with Jared, and I learned so much in a short amount of time. He emphasized not just how to read sheet music, but also how to transcribe a song from a recording which helped me learn songs more quickly and play together with others in an ensemble. His passion and patience are a great combo for a teacher!
Ethan
I took lessons in clawhammer banjo with Jared, and learned quite a bit even though I started myself with clawhammer around 1958 or so. He was very thorough and a very pleasant person, and is very patient.
