Learn the blues in any key. Learn how to improvise and show your friends those blues!

About Ian

I started playing guitar originally in 1991. I picked up bass and ukulele (and then gradually a plethora of other instruments) over the ensuing years. I started teaching in 2001 throughout the Chicagoland area. First in music stores, then schools, then people's homes (including mine) and then online (live via Zoom).

Besides teaching and performing, I also ran an all ages music venue and recording studio from 2006-2015.

Teaching is my biggest love and I love seeing students learn. There isn’t a style I will not teach. All music to me is fascinating

*** Lesson Details ***
All lessons start with the basics (assuming the student doesn’t already know them). This includes: reading music and chord diagrams, understanding rhythm, basic music theory, etc. Meanwhile, we will apply this knowledge to songs of the student’s choice- this wa

y they’re learning songs they like, and more about the instrument and music at the same time. As time goes on we’ll get into playing lead, advanced theory, songwriting and more.

Above is the plan, but I am always open to suggestions from the students as well. As long as they are learning, I am happy. In all reality, we can spend years on just one of the many paths you can go down with music- so I am always continually re-checking on the student’s current and up-to-date goals.

*** Specialties ***
Patience. I feel like it is necessary to be a good teacher. Other than that, I am very confident in my teaching skills. I love so many genres of music that its hard to say where my best talents lie. But no matter what the style, I will say one thing that I have always been strict about is proper technique and rhythm. I feel like timing is something that a lot of musicians take for granted and often have to learn the hard way later on. I try to incorporate it soon after a beginner's first lessons.

Ian is an incredible teacher. Very patient and professional. The way he teaches is very straight forward and easy to understand. I can’t wait to learn more & more... less than a week has passed since my lesson. I already feel so comfortable with my ukulele,
All the utube lessons were useless for me. I realized this after 1 lesson with Ian. The frustration factor on utube was a waste of time for me. I am so happy I chose ian & this company.
Thank you so much, jen

great teacher for popular acoustic guitar

Ian is a no nonsense well organized guy. He taught me using exercises he wrote out on paper mostly in tabulature form. He used a metronome from the first lesson and always introduced a music theory concept such as rhythm, pentatonic scales, and chord transposition. He will not move past any exercise until you can demonstrate proficiency so there is no choice but to draw your own conclusion that you need to practice more if you want to progress. He teaches out of his local all ages music venue, or will travel to your home.

Derek is a very knowledgable instructor, easy to talk to, and I found his teaching technique is very motivating. He set realistic practice goals for the next session, which will require me to do my part, but that's the reason we show up, to learn how to play a musical instrument.
I highly recommend him.

My goal is not so much teaching one how to play an instrument, but more broadly, to help one cultivate their own living musicality. My own areas of practice, study, and specialization are in free improvisation, sound art/Sonic sculpture, conceptual performance, and songwriting/composition. I've explored a vast number of different styles and genre. Jazz, classical, folk and bluegrass, spirituals, blues, punk rock, contemporary ghospel, electronic dance and ambient, to name a few... I love working with kids, I love teaching any age any skill level, I promise to listen, and fine tune our lesson to fit your specific personality and needs.

About Andrew

I've been practicing and studying music for nearly 12 years. Conceptual performance, free improvisation and Sonic sculpture for over 5. For me, music isn't just about playing an instrument. A musical practice is an opportunity for incredible self growth. Excercise for our minds and awareness.

I've worked with students ranging from age 3 to age 62 in the year or so I've been tutoring. I've taught piano mostly ,but am more technically proficient with guitar(electic/acoustic/classical).

I'm a songwriter and recording/performing artist, my style is very ecclectic and inspired by anything from classical, jazz, avant garde, to pop and folk music. I'm confident and versatile. Im comfortable playing or even performing with most instruments. It's taken alot of practice, reasearch, experimentation, and collaboration but over time musc has give

n my experience life and enriched my life and those around me.

I believe in the cultivation of a living musicality.

My approach emphasises the importance of process, exploration and discovery, as well as the study and analysis of traditional concepts. I propose, active listening to be the simplest form of composition. And as musicians an active ear is central, not only in practice, but generally, for creative evolution and innovation.

I've found the most effective methods effectively balance theory and practice.

I believe the biggest inhibitor to growth, musical or otherwise, is a lack of confidence. A lack that comes from too much pressure to produce idealized results-- fear of mistakes...

I embrace the developmental process,
I work with every student to make each lesson plan efficient, meaningful and inspiring.

"Andy was my guitar instructor for more than year. He is a master in theory and practice and is able to bring you to the highest levels. The breath of lear
ning opportunities he offers in terms of techniques, styles, rhythms, songs etc is huge and allows for training and development in the desired areas at every possible level. And he can back up the lessons by the underlying music theory as needed. In practice, Andy quickly spots where issues lie and provides useful hints to overcome technical problems. In addition he offers useful material which helps when practicing at home.

"Phil is a phenomenal teacher - right from the start, he will get you on track with exercises and practice routines that keep you focused on learning to pl
ay the guitar. He will cover the areas that you must know to become proficient on the guitar, including forms, modes, chords and progressing toward learning to read music.

After struggling to teach myself to play the guitar, I realized that I had hit a wall in my self-instructed learning and I needed to find a guitar teacher. I found Phil through word of mouth - and I have made great progress under his tutelage.

If you want to learn to play the guitar, Phil is the teacher you want - if you just want to learn to play songs, well, there’s YouTube."

"Very patient and informative. Allowed me to ask endless questions. Addressed all my concerns and removed any doubt about this arrangement working specific
ally for me and my schedule. His studio has a very nice setup and it's simplified. We did a breakdown of my experience and focused on setting realistic goals towards my learning process. More than a "Teacher" of music but a "Professor" of guitar methods! He focused in on getting me comfortable with the most basic of finger techniques, finger placement and familiarized with the sections of the solo lead guitar. After an hour's session my mind was put at ease about my ability to be patient with myself. I was never made to feel awkward or out of my league. This caused me to open up and to really focus. Mr.Cole has a great style and passion towards helping me to soak in as much content as possible. His location is within a community that's family orientated. I look forward to being tutored by Mr.Cole over the course of the next year without any complications."

"I've been taking guitar lessons across the country since 1975, and Mark is the best instructor I've ever had. His expertise on the instrument is only surp
assed by his ability to make something complicated appear simple for the student. I've had more fun taking lessons and practicing in the past 6 months as Mark's student than I have in the previous 40 years. I highly recommend him."

"I have been a student of Tim’s for a little over a year now. I started playing guitar at age 52 and when I started with Tim I was very close to giving up
or settling on just being able to strum a few chords. I have had many hand injuries in the past that have resulted in arthritis and lack of dexterity in my wrists and some of my fingers and I started doubting I would ever be able to progress in my ability to play. From the very first lesson where I told Tim about my hand issues and my frustrations, he told me he was sure we could work around any physical limitations I had, and he was right. Tim has been able to work with me on alternative ways to play the chords I was having trouble with and has shown me that these alternate techniques along with the bit of music theory he sprinkles into lessons can really expand my ability to play.

In the time I have been studying with Tim, I have done more than I thought I ever could. I went from a frustrated beginner guitar player to having enough confidence to play on stage with some of Tim’s other students and I am now looking forward to what I will be able to do on the guitar instead of being frustrated with what I can’t do.

Tim is a talented and passionate musician as well as a knowledgeable and very relatable instructor which is a rare combination and he's also a really great guy and any student of any age or ability will benefit from studying with him."

He has offered to take my lessons on-line while recover from surgery. This is really great because I get to keep my momentum up. If you want a great teacher for a reasonable price this is your guy."
