From strumming chords & holding a pick, to using thumb & finger picks, alternate tuning & capo strategies, I work to inspire & elevate technique, musicality & fluency in the bluegrass genre.
Hey, my name is Alex. I'm a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, Oud, bouzouki, keyboards, voice, drums, flute, etc.), composer, performer, recording artist, arranger/orchestrator/transcriber, recording engineer/producer & music educator.
I graduated from the University of St. Thomas "Cum Laude" in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Guitar Performance, with minors in Music Production & Composition. While attending St. Thomas I served as the Music Theory tutor, as well as the live sound/stage/light/recording technician for student & faculty recitals.
I have been playing professionally & teaching for over a decade. My passion for music is something that I love to share with anyone else who feels inclined to make music. My goal is to share the skills & knowledge I've acquired throughout my experiences with those willing to learn & dedic
ate themselves to the craft of making music.
I am a full-time member of Maiden Dixie (country/rock; guitar/vocals), Sumo Seven (Funk; bass/vocals), & Armadillo Tank (Prog rock; guitar/vocals). Along with my solo band, I perform for numerous pit orchestras, bands, tributes, & artists around the Twin Cities area.
In February 2019, I released my debut solo album, "Sonic Chef's Circus Absurdities".
*** Lesson Details *** I am an experienced gigging musician in most major genres of music: classical, jazz, blues, rock, funk, folk, metal, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, instrumental rock, "shred," pop, world music, electronica, etc. & feel comfortable conveying the techniques, approaches & idioms to a student by breaking them down into digestible components, while making these new ideas relatable to material they are already familiar with.
In the end, I want the student to learn what they're most interested in learning. I'm here to answer any questions they may have & with my experiences, I feel confident that I will be able to either answer these questions or point them in the right direction. Some topics covered:
Scales/modes Ear training Instrument-specific techniques (ie bending, tapping, sweep picking, etc.) Songwriting & Composition Arranging & Orchestrating Sight-reading Improvisation Chordal theory & how to read charts Practice routines & approaches Instrument maintenance Instrument-based gear (guitars, amplifiers, effects, picks, slides, capos, etc.)
The student will learn at the pace they set for themselves & can only get out of it the amount of effort they put forth. I expect my students to practice on a regular basis (however brief each session may be). Consistency is key for progress to be made, & if they hold up their end of the bargain, the payoffs will be quite substantial!
*** Studio Equipment *** Practice amplifier, tuner, music stand(s), guitar picks & cables.
*** Travel Equipment *** I can provide guitar neck paper. I expect the students to have their own instrument & any materials they may need to achieve the goals they've set for themselves (such as a weekly notebook).
*** Specialties *** Progressive rock, classic rock, blues, jazz, funk, disco, classical, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, flamenco guitar; music theory, sight-reading, composition, songwriting, film scoring, music production.

Robert has been teaching my 11-year old son electric guitar for the last few months and has done a brilliant job. My son loves his lessons and is inspired to practice and learn more. Robert works with my son's song choices and is amazingly patient and supportive. He is also an outstanding mentor for a young musician!

Robert is amazing! He is remarkably patient, encouraging, thoughtful, and generous. He is also quick to think of all kinds of fixes to advance your progress. He wears his encyclopedic knowledge lightly, and his lessons are always fun. I would recommend him with great enthusiasm for any stringed instrument!

Lessons are based around each individual student's music goals. Simple practical methods for understanding and developing the fundamental skills needed to play songs you love and want to perform are the focus of each lesson. Teaching and performing music are what I'm passionate about. I have over twenty years of teaching experience with beginners and advanced students and have developed a curriculum that really works for all levels and styles while keeping things fun!
I'm an experienced teacher with a background as a full time performing musician. Music was a big part of my life from an early age and I've stuck with it pursuing it as a career path. I graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Studio Music and Jazz Performance and since have been teaching and performing. The focus of my music career has always been playing original music with bands but teaching has always been something I've loved too.
I've formally studied both classical and jazz while playing in rock bands and learned to see the similarities in all forms of music. My favorite thing to teach people is songs they love and how to use the fundamentals of music to make playing their songs fun. Writing practical simple charts that show how songs work opens music up for people in ways they didn't think possible. Playing an
d singing together for the first time or finally having the light bulb moment when reading music makes sense is something magical. It's an amazing feeling and helping people learn how to makes me happy.
I've been teaching music for over twenty years and look forward to sharing my experience and knowledge with new students.
I've been working with Brian for four months now and have made excellent progress on guitar. Brian quickly adjusted to my experience level and has done an outstanding job of removing long-standing bad habits and reinforcing the good ones. He has a fresh approach which ensures students don't get bored and, best of all, instills confidence and a good stage presence. I'm on my way to being a better guitar player but more importantly, a better musician. I recommend Brian without reservation.

Brian has been great , he patiently provides simple tangible explanations for both guitar play and music theory. He is building a solid foundation for my musical growth and more importantly supporting and enhancing my love of music. I give Brian my highest recommendation, he's a natural teacher

Acoustic or electric, guitar or bass, beginner and beyond! I am a full-time singer-songwriter who has been playing guitar since 2002.
The best part that my students love is that I am left-handed- when I am showing them something on the guitar, it is like a mirror image for a right handed student, making it very easy to follow along with the exercise!
My lessons are custom tailored to my students according to what they are interested in working on. These lessons are done online, so no travel is involved.

Joe is both knowledgeable and patient with me as his student. His lessons have been valuable in improving my guitar playing and technique. Joe's focus is goal-oriented, which helps me to keep my eyes on the prize. Highly recommend
Guitar requires foundation to be able to play the fun stuff. In teaching guitar, I assign classical pieces along with pieces that bring joy to the player. I specialize in improvisation and love to see players playing things not written on the staff while still able to play their Carcassi studies.
I am currently pursuing a Jazz Performance degree at Florida State University. However trombone is not how I fell in love with music. I started taking classical guitar lessons at age seven and successfully continued through high school, becoming part of the all state guitar ensembles. I started on trombone at age 11. Through jazz, funk, blues and improvisation I fell in love with the sound and techniques I could implement on a brass horn. I continued playing both instruments in a funk band and still gig regularly on both.

My teaching philosophy is simple; I want to help my students achieve the goals they have with music. Whether that is learning a few simple Taylor Swift songs or passing a entrance audition into a university, I want to see my students succeed. I have worked on a curriculum that teaches skills and concepts that every musician must know. The combination of having a good curriculum in combination with teaching the students the music they love, creates good musicians and inspired students that are excited to come to guitar lessons each week. I structure my lessons into four categories; lines, chords, technique, and repertoire. Lines can include melodies, scales, and for more advanced students soloing. Technique is an important area of focus for guitarists. Many older guitarists I know have injuries due to bad technique. Its very important to
instill proper technique in younger students so they won’t develop bad habits and have injuries later in life. I love teaching guitar. It has been the most rewarding thing in my life. Seeing students gain confidence in their playing and also in themselves is an incredible experience. As a life long student of music myself I believe it is crucial to create musicians and music lovers out of our students.

the neck in many different ways. I am a intermediate guitar player and within a few lessons with Lucian I was given tools to work on and practice for months to improve my skills and technique/ approach to playing. I would recommend his lessons to ANYONE looking to improve!"
"Max was a great teacher. I walked in wanting to learn better soloing techniques for my bluegrass guitar. With Max's help, I got over several humps in my p

Starting bluegrass guitar lessons is fun and exciting, and odds are you'll have a lot to learn! Guitar teacher Samuel B. shares a few things you'll want to do before you get started...
Bluegrass is as much a piece of American musical culture as jazz, blues, country, gospel and early rock and roll. All of these styles (save for jazz) are based on the same three chords: C, F and G7th. Three of these styles (blues, country and gospel) are based on a slow rhythm that allows the guitarist room to …
