I've played guitar since I was only eight years old (over 20 years!) in many different bands, styles, and genres. I played in a traditional Irish ensemble when I was in college and have since picked up banjo, mandolin, harmonica, and bodhran (an Irish hand drum). I love playing and teaching bluegrass music, it's a special challenge both for me and the students!

About Gio
I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums.

I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is what I'm passionate about and it's what I enjoy. I want to inspire that same passion into the hearts and minds of others.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrument takes a lot of work and dedication. One can't expect to learn very much if s/he only practices or thinks about the instrument during the lesson. If the student is willing to put some time into practicing, then I will help them go far!

*** Studi
o Equipment ***
I have several guitars, a drum kit, djembe, mandolin, clarinet and full-size keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
Guitar: Classical, jazz, American or Irish folk, rock and pop; lead or rhythm.
Drums & Percussion: All genres
Piano: Classical (includes sight reading)

I started playing acoustic guitar when I was seven years old. I have been playing and teaching mostly bluegrass, old time, Irish, blues, and swing jazz styles for many years. I have taught both privately and have also done various workshops at festivals. I have taught guitar multiple years for instance at the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival in PA.
My students learn to have fun with music. Students can work on rhythms, melodies, improvisation, song writing, getting into and/or hanging on in a jam session, etc.

About Tara
I have a Masters in Education as well as having spent many years performing, teaching in one on one and group settings both privately and at music camps and festivals. I play and teach bluegrass, old time, Irish, and swing jazz styles. I like my students to really enjoy playing music and their lessons as well as learning to become fluent in the language of music. It is not required that folks learn to read music necessarily, but it can be a part of the lessons if desired. I love to see my students able to continue learning and playing on their own, be able to hold their own at jams and on the stage is they so desire, or just enjoy making music for themselves. I have techniques that have proven effective to help get past jam phobia, that help folks learn to improvise who have not had any luck with doing so before, and help getting away fro
m sheet music addictions to be able to have fun and confidence out at jams. I also can give a good foundation in music theory as it applies to one's actual playing and have it be fun and make sense.

"Jonathan Kalb has been my guitar teacher now for a little over 2 year and I’m delighted to say, I am much more than pleased with my lessons.
I took lessons previously and was OK with them, but found myself wandering and lacking a sense of ‘commitment’ to the teacher and to my studies. Dry.
I’m not a kid anymore and was looking for a teacher who could work with my adult enthusiasm, excitement, and I didn't want to be rooted to teaching me the pentatonic scales in all keys before we could get to some playing and having some fun, too... I was hoping for a teacher who could personalize his teaching skills, and for me, Jonathan came through with flying colors. He’s so much more than a “One Size Fits All” teacher; he’s a real person – reachable, able to identify my needs, my strengths and weaknesses, and takes this into full consideration during our lessons. He’s an experienced, talented teacher. Simple.
He’s a person that really knows his stuff from musical theory to the many styles of playing, i.e., blues, jazz, folk, country and even rock; he can play and more importantly – he can teach um all! I’m an aspiring singer/songwriter and in addition to helping me define those strange chords I’m playing, he inspires me to ‘grow on.’
Oh, and one more thing: If your lesson is an hour long and there’s something important happening, he won’t cut you off - he’ll take the extra time needed to get you to the end of ‘the measure,’ comfortably." Feb 2017 Rachel I.

Jonathan Kalb is a professional blues artist, a multi instrumentalist, and a talented teacher. I have been taking harmonica lessons from Jonathan for over seven years and my playing has improved dramatically as a result of his instruction. He often accompanies me on either piano or guitar in order to help me master a difficult harmonica lick.
Whether you are looking for a teacher on guitar, piano, bass, harmonica or drums, I highly recommend Jonathan Kalb as your teacher.

Energetic, supportive & fun... my students will grow as players, musicians and songwriters. Learn new songs, skills, and/or how to play in a band. Together, we will advance you towards your goals.

"You are a great teacher and have helped me to grow in my skills as a musician and a person...I aspire to be a musician just like you.." HP, high school student in Elizabeth's guitar club

About Elizabeth
I love to teach. I have a few openings for students for whom I'm the right teacher. I say "yes" to your dreams of making music, acknowledge your passion and give you tools to improve your skills as a guitarist, songwriter, singer, basic keyboard theory and/or recording. We play in my studio in NYC or online.

"You are a great teacher and have helped me to grow in my skills as a musician and a person...I aspire to be a musician just like you.." HP, high school student in Elizabeth's guitar club

I wrote and performed "Relative Pitch," a one-woman musical comedy at NY's Cherry Lane Theatre, Off Broadway, toured with the Broadway cast of "Beatlemania." My songs have been heard on tv and in film. I've just composed a musical and am working on a ballet(!).

Whether she's enticing you with come-hither invitations or giving a dead
beat beau the boot, Elizabeth shows her depth and versatility as a wicked-smart contemporary singer/songwriter in Sleep Naked.

Elizabeth is a facile cross-genre writer, delivering an alluring, gospel-tinged lullaby in the album's title track, "Sleep Naked," while exhibiting her pluck in the strutting and self-assured send-off songs "I'm Too Beau'ful (for you)" and "One Last Look." Her talents even cover Western Swing with "Back Seat Driver," a good-time road trip replete with rapid-fire wordplay. Through it all, Elizabeth puts forth compelling turns of phrase and agile moments of melody, both as composer and singer.

Even when she's meting out stinging barbs, Elizabeth keeps her good humor, as evidenced by "Enlightenment" (with its erudite imputations) and "Oil" (an indictment of the fossil-fuel industry). But she turns on an emotional dime to render a heartfelt plea in the sultry, loping "Baby Please Come On Home" and serves up a haunting, evocative reverie in "Ferris Wheel."

As if singing, writing, and leading the band weren't enough, Elizabeth lays down some serious guitarwork on Sleep Naked. On acoustic, she is equally deft comping jazz-chord passages ("Enlightenment") as she is fingerpicking Piedmont-style blues ("Leave Me Alone"). When she dons an electric, Elizabeth coaxes slinky, lyrical lines from her Tele for "Sleep Naked" and punctuates the simple acoustic-bass texture of "Baby Please Come On Home" with tasty slide fills.

A few blocks from the ocean Simon keeps busy teaching and performing, often with his longest-running band, Simon and the Bar Sinisters, a stalwart of New York bars since 1991. Mr. Chardiet’s style runs from surf guitar to blues to rockabilly, not to mention punk and bebop.

Mr. Chardiet said he began playing in bars at age 14 and fell in with the Lower East Side punk and rock scene, often working as a bike messenger to scrape by.

“I did everything on the street level,” he said in his apartment as his cat — a stray that Mr. Chardiet adopted and named Dee Dee, after the Ramones’ bassist, Dee Dee Ramone — strolled through. Mr. Chardiet recalled jamming with Mr. Ramone, as well as with many other prominent rockers.

Mr. Chardiet has lived all over this town, from the Lower East Side to Williamsburg to Bushwick, always trying to keep a step ahead of the gentrification, he said.

He began surfing as a youngster after finding a board in the trash on Long Island. He would often surf in the ...

I have a degree in music performance (Bachelor of Fine Arts, Northern Illinois University, 2007). At NIU, I was grateful to study under acclaimed jazz, classical and world-music guitarist Fareed Haque. Since then, I've toured the US, Europe, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kenya and Uganda with the bluegrass group "Henhouse Prowlers", performed in countless rock bands, jazz combos, folk groups, classical ensembles and even worked as a jingle writer and producer.

My favorite things about working with students:
For my youngest students, I enjoy seeing the smiles that music brings and I love watching the "light bulb" turn on when a student gets a concept or nails a piece for the first time.

For my adult students, I love seeing their desire to continue learning at every stage of life. Their thirst for knowledge and openness to new ideas is a constant inspiration to me!

About Aaron
From absolute beginners to guitarists with years of experience, I'm absolutely thrilled to work with students of all ages, backgrounds and ability levels. As an educator, my biggest joy comes from watching a new concept, skill or song just "click" with a student and my job is to help that process happen easily and organically and to make the whole process fun.

A little about me: I spent the last three years touring internationally with the Chicago-based bluegrass band "Henhouse Prowlers". I had the unique opportunity to perform all over Europe, and in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kenya, Uganda, Russia, Pakistan, and Kyrgyzstan. I've played in countless venues across the US in a wide variety of styles. I have a degree in jazz guitar performance from Northern Illinois University where I studied with acclaimed classical and jazz virtuoso Faree
d Haque.

Personally, the most rewarding experiences of my career in music have always come, not from my performance opportunities, but rather making connections with students; I love to encourage and facilitate discovery and growth and share the joy of music with others.

I am a multi-instrumentalist performing singer-songwriter with 20 years of teaching experience. I surround the lesson with a musical context that enriches the simplest of beginner melodies with fun, dynamic accompaniment - and I can
delve into far more advanced material in multiple styles: jazz, classical, improvisational, pop, rock, blues etc. I teach multiple instruments and also
compose with students - a creative process that engages them instrumentally and even lyrically.

These days, for younger students, I even invite parents to sit in on drums
- even if they are inexperienced. The results are fun and often very musical and encourage the family to make music together. My new open mic series brings the music into the community and provides performance opportunities in a relaxed setting at a local all-ages venue.

About Jim
Hello and thanks for considering lessons with me! I have been teaching all ages for over 20 years in Connecticut and I am also a performing singer-songwriter. I teach piano, guitar, voice, mandolin, bass, violin, saxophone, harmonica, songwriting, and more, including coaching students on a variety of instruments such as cello, banjo, accordion, etc.
From my website here is my music bio.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New England singer-songwriter Jim Allyn is known for his freewheeling improvisations on mandolin, guitar, piano and harmonica. β€œHe plays a lot of good bluegrass too,” according to the legendary Bill Monroe.*

With a musical compass forged in roots, rock, country, blues, and gospel Allyn writes songs that cut a path straight to the heart and keep moving
.

This summer marks the release of his first full length album Backyards of the Brave, featuring all original works: true stories from train yards, backroads, battlefields and coal mines (see review below). Recent years have included multiple tour dates with folk legend Jonathan Edwards as a member of Edwards' band. Allyn has also performed extensively with Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, and Mary) and at venues and festivals over the years including onstage jamming with Bela Fleck, Livingston Taylor, Dar Williams, Tom Chapin, Guy Davis, Christine Lavin, Vaneese Thomas, Chris Hillman of the Byrds, Newgrass Revival, Vassar Clements, legendary fiddler Kenny Baker, and many others. Allyn's multi-instrumental work and vocals are also heard on recordings by numerous regional artists.

As Music Director and co-creator of the Flagpole Radio Cafe in Connecticut (2008-2014) Jim and the house band/ensemble garnered rave reviews: a "hit" show, according to the New York Times. The band, featuring Francine Wheeler, continues to do concerts each year and the show itself is likely to resume this year.

Pianist Tom Snow offered this recent praise for Backyards of the Brave:

"This album is a treasure. The amount of sonic and compositional variety is really quite incredible. One of the many wonderful attributes of this creation is that it stands up to multiple listenings. There is so much richness on many levels that I find myself hearing new things on successive listenings. Priority Gal and Lindytown and This Old Guitar and Jazzbo are real stand-outs for me. I love the compositional subtleties that inform the songs, especially chord choices! "
