About Ronen
Hello to all, My name is Ronen and I am originally from Tel-Aviv, Israel.

I came to the United States to pursue my academic career in music and graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2007, majoring in Professional Music. My coursework included Music Theory, Music Technology, and Music Business as well as other related professional music courses. My practical experience included private lessons with internationally renowned drummers such as Dave Dicenso, Kenwood Denard, and Mike Mangini. Additionally, my hands-on classes included Rudimental Labs, Drum Labs, Fusion Labs, Studio Drumming Lab, Contemporary Applications for Percussion, and Afro-Cuban Drumming. Through this broad curriculum, I have expanded my cultural understanding of music.

With more than fifteen years of solid experience in the music world and teaching field, I am
a highly professional drum teacher and have been instructing students of all ages and levels informatively and creatively. Students under my teaching methods are engaged with numerous styles of music and cultures, and develop gradually while achieving excellent music and performance skills.

*** Lesson Details ***
In general, and depending on the student requirements, I teach drum rudiments, music notation, a range of styles, drum tuning and setup. As part of my method, I divide my class/lesson into four sections, which begins with warm ups and proceed with drum rudiments and coordination. I devote the second portion of the lesson to reading and playing orchestral snare drum pieces, and in the third section, students practice different types of rhythms. In these lessons, as well as in private classes, I use drum-method books such as Joel Rothman's Mini-Monster Book of Rock Drumming by Joel Rothman (Fort Lauderdale, Fla: J.R. Publications, 1981), Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer by Jim Chapin (New York: Jim Chapin, 1971), Ted Reed’s Progressive steps to syncopation for the modern drummer (Van Nuys, California: Alfred, 1996), as well as many music charts. In the last portion of the session, I engage students in an open discussion about their progress, improvements and goals.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Small studio: drum set, two drum thrones plus two drum pads, computer / mixing board and studio monitors , downstairs there is a living room or I can bring a chair if parents want to sit in on lesson

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide : Books, Music Charts , skills and my knowledge
The student need provide : Drum Set , Drum Sticks , Stave paper / Music paper / Note Book

*** Specialties ***
I teach students separately and collectively. During my lessons, I teach drum rudiments, how to read drums’ musical notation, various rhythm styles such as rock, funk, shuffle, and drum tuning and setup. I divide my classes into four sections beginning with warm ups, which included drum rudiments and coordination; the second portion of the class is devoted to reading and playing orchestral snare drum piece, and in the third section, students are practicing various rhythms, where I included books such as Mini-Monster Book Of Rock Drumming by Joel Rothman, Four way coordination by Jim Chapin as well as various music sheets. I have a 100% rate of getting my students into their school of choice as of yet. Although I don't guarantee it, I will work relentlessly to make sure you are well prepared though. I will also lend you PDFs of books to help you save a buck.

About Scott
*Brief Update: Both of my 8th grade students were accepted to LaGuardia High School and my 5th grade student was accepted into Mark Twain Middle School for the Gifted & Talented. He also passed his audition for Borough Wide Band. Next up is getting my Junior in high school into All State Orchestra!*

*Update again. My student made all state!

I have been playing drums and percussion since the ripe old age of 9, in 4th grade. Originally wanting to play the clarinet, my music teacher thought my sense of rhythm was too good to waste and placed me in the drum section. I was the only kid who didn't want to play drums. Twenty years later here I am, a professional freelancing percussionist and teacher. The journey to where I am was a long and winding one but I can't imagine it any other way. After learning basic drumming in elementary sch
ool, I continued through middle school. There I was placed on drum kit and thought I was the coolest. I didn't take it too seriously but serious enough to keep playing drum kit. When choosing high schools I wasn't interested in keeping with drums. I only took marching band because it meant no gym. After my first year I was placed in every band the next three years, having to learn timpani and marimba for concert band. I was also recommended to join a city wide concert band, InterSchool orchestras of New York, and haven't left since. I still coach the band and help tons of high school and middle school students hone their craft. Also that year, through ISO, I was given a chance to attend French woods performing arts camp on scholarship where I began my love of playing in musical pit orchestras. Through this time I studied with a couple of teachers and had plenty of coachings with professional percussionists. Upon graduating I have played well over 100 different musicals, played with over 25 different orchestras, and have taught over 100 students both privately and in coachings. I currently run a Drumline out of a private school, coach ISO band, freelance and have a studio of 8 students. That is a short sample of my journey and I hope it inspires you to study with me.

If you choose me as a teacher, I will shape you as an overall musician, not just a "Drummer". What this means is that you won't just learn beats from me, you will learn all the fundamentals of basic to intermediate music theory, from note reading and rhythm to chord changes and ..... You will start on a practice pad and quickly go to a drum kit. Lessons will be half and half, but more 75/25 drumkit, because everything you learn on a pad can translate to the kit! I would also teach you timpani and xylophone if you like so you can broaden your horizons and even get into the middle/high school or college you want. I have most of my books of pdf that I can give you to print or you can purchase your own copies. You would also need to purchase a practice pad and eventually a drum kit. If you don't want to purchase a drum kit then there is almost no reason to study it since you won't be able to practice between lessons. Practicing, let's talk about that. It is expected that you practice the material we learn in the lesson throughout the week. Now I know everyone is busy, but if you can put aside 25 minutes (a sitcom without commercials!!) a day then you will have a better understanding and better retention of the material. Doing this will let us just review the material a little bit and go on to learn new and exciting things.

The bottom line in choosing me? I am a professional musician in the trenches of the nyc music scene and know what it takes to make it.

My main instruments are Clarinet, Drums, and Saxophone, but i also have a strong background in Piano, Trumpet, and Flute. I've taken private music lessons for the past 15 years with world class musicians, among them David Weber and Howard Hirsch. I've performed in every major concert hall in New York City, including Carnegie Hall when i was only 11 years old. I performed alongside many famous musicians, including the late Tito Puente.

I usually use either the Alfred or Rubank method books to supplement a curriculum that I tailor make for each individual student. Any question or confusion a student has about anything during the lesson will be explained in detail and dealt with until he/she understands the concept. I've had many students pass all levels of the ABRSM and NYSSMA exams as well as receive academic scholarships for musical excellence.

About Asaf
I would not be the person I am today if music wasn't the focal point in my life as it is. Not only do I absolutely love performing and studying music myself, but I adore teaching as well. Part of the musical experience is taking what you hear and what you learn from others and building on it to create your own musical contributions. I take the gifts other teachers and musicians have given me very seriously and subsequently feel the great importance of imparting my knowledge unto others.

Whether you want to be a professional, or just be competent enough to enjoy yourself, we all practice, study technique and gain knowledge about music with really only one goal in mind: To have all the tools necessary to express ourselves adeptly through music. All the technique in the world will not make you a great musician. Similarly, you can be extre
mely creative and knowledgeable, but if you don't have the technique and vocabulary needed to express your ideas, you will find yourself very limited and suppressed musically.

My philosophy about teaching follows that I am here to provide you with those tools in a fun, exciting way. When I say "tools" I mean the whole toolbox. This includes giving you the technique, correcting bad habits, providing listening material, finding holes in your playing and much more. A good music teacher must be more than an instructor, but a mentor and an inspirational guide. My best teachers were the ones who could cultivate my playing not just through the physical aspects but ESPECIALLY through the cerebral. We ALL need encouragement and inspiration to get the best out of our natural talent. I love to encourage my students to do their best. To strive to not only complete exercises, but to execute them well. Every student is different, and therefore I will tailor their education with me on an individual basis. I expect a lot out of my students because I strongly believe in my teaching ability as well as their ability to learn and feel good about their progress.

My approach to providing all these things is modeled around my best experiences in learning and performing. I've studied under some of the absolute best players and teachers in the world. Here are just a couple:

World renowned drummer and educator

TOMMY IGOE from
The Lion King on Broadway
The Birdland Big Band
Numerous instructional books and DVDs.

Highly sought after percussionist

TOM KOLOR
Graduated from William Paterson as well as with a Masters from the Julliard School of Music
Professor of Music at the University at Buffalo.

IAN FROMAN
Professor of Drums at Berklee School of Music
Professional, world renowned Drummer

I've also graduated Cum Laude from the University at Buffalo with a degree in Music Performance, Dean's List and Honor Roll awards.

Some of my experience includes being featured in Tommy Igoe's "Great Hands For a Lifetime" DVD which received 5 stars from Modern Drummer magazine in 2010. I've also played great venues like Gramercy Theatre and Central Park in NYC among others. I've played in Big Bands, Symphony Orchestras, Klesmer and Percussion ensembles, and more.

I really could go on forever talking about music, what it means to me, how I approach teaching, etc. When you love music and teaching as much as I do, you really can't help it. It's ingrained in you. Precisely as ingrained as I like to think being a fun, caring, disciplined, attentive teacher is in me. Whether it be for you or your child, I can easily promise that I will deliver the same success-bound mentoring that I have to my students for over 10 years running.

Can't wait to hear from you!

-Asaf

*** Lesson Details ***
-I am here for you.

I would not teach if I wasn't very interested in the progress of my students. I want you to be the biggest, baddest, awe-inspiring drummer/percussionist possible. I want to ultimately end up at your shows and concerts and be able to say "That's MY student." You can always be guaranteed that when studying with me everything I assign has precisely that goal in mind.

-Strict or Laid Back?

Many people might ask if I'm strict, or laid back. My response is that I am excited and driven to help you reach success. I will never scold you because that sort of practice has no place in teaching. I also understand that learning isn't just a straight upwards incline of progression. We're all humans. Sometimes we progress astronomically in a short period of time and sometimes we have to fight hard to nail something. Sometimes we have a lot of time to practice, and sometimes we simply don't. My job is to make the most out of every situation and help you learn no matter what. That being said, I will still hound you to practice as much as healthily possible!

-What do you want out of music?

Probably the most important question I will undoubtedly ask you upon meeting you is why you are taking lessons. There is no way to formulate a tailored lesson plan if I don't know what it is you're working towards.

-Expected Material

Like I said, I can't tell you very specifically what your lesson plan will be, but I CAN give you examples of what I almost always assign. Individually written out exercises, exercises from books, assigned reading/listening, song covers, chart writing/reading, improvisational exercises, rudiment study, warm-up routines, among others.

-Don't be Afraid to Make Mistakes

Mistakes are part of the learning process! If you aren't making mistakes then I'm doing something wrong. Never be afraid to make mistakes.

-You Get What You Give

I promise I'll be there for you. I'll be there to give you the material and show you the path, but you're going to have to be there for yourself as well. The more prepared you are for our lessons, the more you will grow from the time we spend together.

Mastering an instrument takes time and effort both by student and teacher. The sooner we get started the sooner you get on that path. I'm ready whenever you are.

*** Studio Equipment ***
detached studio 3 professional drum sets seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
Numerous practice pads and snare stands. I expect my students to only provide their own Drum Sticks and books.

*** Specialties ***
I pride myself on being as versatile as I possibly can be. I can aptly teach most styles including Jazz, Rock, Funk, Latin, Hip Hop\R&B, Classical, and more.

Flexible teaching methods!

Asaf is just brilliant. During the first session, my son was very distracted by the other things in the music room ie lights, instruments etc but Asaf managed to engage him by being extremely flexible in his teaching ie he is not wedded to any order and has a lesson plan in mind but goes with the flow and the interest of the child - this ensures that all that was intended on being covered is, and as a result of the flexibility, my son just loves these drum lesson and Asaf. Asaf makes him focus and has built a great teacher/student relationship in only 3 session. I would highly recommend Asaf.

See description for 'drum lessons'. I teach classical percussion and mallet percussion when the student has access to an instrument at home to practice on, and this is often in tandem with drum set lessons.

About Kate
Originally from Buffalo, drummer/composer/improviser Kate Gentile has played and recorded with a panoply of renowned musicians since moving to NYC in 2011.

Kate has played with Anthony Braxton, Dustin Carlson, Andrew D'Angelo, Kris Davis, Marty Ehrlich, Michael Formanek, Ben Gerstein, Jon Irabagon, Chris Lightcap, Terry McManus, Matt Mitchell, Helado Negro, Ted Reichman, Chris Speed, and the Asphalt Orchestra, and has recorded with Jasmine Lovell-Smith's Towering Poppies and David Aaron's Flip City.

"...[G.'s] inventive drumming...eads the listener into a gentle place." -Step Tempest

"[G.'s] drum work on this [Fortune Songs] is exquisite." -“Bird Is The Worm

In addition to being a frequently used sideman and collaborator, Kate also leads bands exploring her own music, which often tend towards dense, long-form compositions with
unconventional rhythms and harmony. Her music has been described as "...hyper-detailed...designed to spur multi-faceted improvisation". Her most recently formed trio with pianist Matt Mitchell deals with a new book of compositions containing varied forms and harmonic and rhythmic structures that demand a spectrum of improvisational creativity.

Kate holds a dual degree in Jazz Performance and Music Education from the Eastman School of Music. Kate has also studied independently with a host of great drummers, improvisers, and composers, including Dan Weiss, Tim Berne, Tony Malaby, Marc Ducret, Miles Okazaki, and John Riley.

Kate has enjoyed teaching drum lessons independently for 10 years and has taught at the NYSMF summer jazz program and several schools.

I teach intermediate level classical percussion, including mallet percussion, snare and tympani performance technique.

About Mike
Hello, my name is Mike and I am excited to teach you. I have studied the drums for most of my life, and can't wait to show you what I have learned.

I have been fortunate enough to have worked with some amazing teachers and musicians from all over the globe. I am more than willing to pass on what I have discovered.

I have taught beginners how to hold the sticks and play simple grooves, as well as shown seasoned veterans how to strengthen their foundation and overcome roadblocks to mastery.

I encourage my students to develop a solid foundation of technical skills (grip, body mechanics, reading, time, rudiments, styles/grooves) while finding their own voice on the instrument. Musical performance is a deeply personal experience, and I hope to guide you towards whatever goals you have in mind.

I love playing music with Mike. I asked him to accompany me and/or create parts for my original songs and the experience was fantastic. I only wish I lived closer to him now! He is a great, sensitive and creative drummer, adding depth and excitement to the music he plays. He's also passionate about his art; always working on new and exciting projects and creating musical community. I should also mention that he's a funny, caring, relaxed and upbeat guy to be around- I have no doubt that his motivation and ethic as a musician carry over into his teaching. Highly recommended!

As the drummer in my funk band, Middle Blue, Mike provides both an airtight rhythmic foundation and a sense of adventure. In other words, the beat is always concrete, but never *too* straight. He's always doing something interesting or mysterious with it. Also, he's full of surprises. Just the other day, he threw a rhythmic idea at me that I hadn't heard from him, and we've been playing together for over a year. If I were a drummer, I'd be excited to take lessons with Mike.

I have 5 years of professional teaching experience, and have designed individual lesson plans for students of various ages and experience levels. I will help you build a solid foundation on the art of drumming as we navigate through technique, groove, creativity, and musicianship, all while catering to your own goals and tastes. Your enjoyment and improvement are central to my work! Let's get to it!

About Daniel
I am a drummer, composer and improviser from New York City. I graduated from Oberlin Conservatory with a Bachelors in Music, with a focus on jazz drumset, where I also studied various styles of world music and percussion.

I have been drumming for over 12 years, and understand the difficulties of figuring out where to start, what to practice, and how to improve. My versatility and formal training has helped me to provide students with a solid foundation on the technical aspects of drumming (reading music, hand technique, rudiments, coordination etc.) along with helping them find their own voice. You can expect me to design personalized lesson plans that are catered to your personality, taste and improvement.

To facilitate my students' learning, I provide various written materials, from method books to my own exercises. I typical
ly start lessons on a practice pad before moving to the drum kit. I also work closely with the student to develop concise and organized practice routines, so that they understand what to work on during their own time. In my experience, I have found that this foundation in routine and gradual improvement is central to great musicianship, and with time, will open up a world of possibilities for creativity and expression.

I am very familiar and comfortable working with beginners, but can teach students of all ages and experience levels. Whether you want your child to turn their banging into music, or are looking to take your chops to the next level, I'm your guy!
